With 2013 rapidly winding to a close, our November Mint Issue brings a conclusion to a year full of great moments for the Royal Australian Mint. These moments include the celebration of one of our most innovative coins – the Southern Sky – Crux Coin – which recently won us the 2013 Canberra Engineering Excellence Award. A number of you would have been very fortunate to get your hands on this piece of excellence and if you haven’t snapped up the Pavo coin yet, you better add it to your Christmas list!
Another moment that we are excited to highlight is the 2013 Exporting Government Solutions Award at the ACT Chief Minister’s Export Awards. We have been sharing with you the story for a number of years now of the growing relationships we’ve formed to bring you coins from around the world and it is great to have the hard work recognised.
Our Colourful Change celebration for the release of the 2013 60th anniversary of the Queen’s Coronation $2 coloured circulating coin recently closed with a bang. The hugely popular coin swap in Brisbane attracted people from across the country to visit Queensland’s capital for this once in a lifetime opportunity. I would like to thank these loyal collectors as well as the new collectors that have come along with us on the journey of releasing Australia’s first purple-striped circulating $2 coin. Our Colourful Change video competition also recently wrapped-up, with Catherine Pitt winning a trip to the UK.
The inaugural year for our Legends program has been extremely successful, with over 9000 people signed up to get first access to Mint news and product release announcements. I am pleased to report that the program will be continuing in 2014, and encourage
you to sign up so you too can benefit from this great endeavour. If you would like further information about the Mint Legends Program, including what rewards are on offer, please visit our website for further information www.ramint.gov.au/faq or contact our Call Centre on 1300 652 020.
This Mint Issue rounds out our product calendar for 2013, and introduces the much anticipated yearly releases for 2014. The selectively gold plated and colour printed $1 coins, highlights in the 2014 year sets, grace the front cover. This highlight is a fitting way to kick off the celebrations for the thirtieth anniversary of the Australian $1 coin however, stay tuned for more information about our plans for this anniversary later in 2014. The Hawthorn Football Club’s success of taking the AFL Premiership is also celebrated within the pages of this Issue. Handy Christmas gift ideas for the seasoned collector or budding numismatist are included toward the end of this Issue. Make sure you circle any products that take your fancy so your loved ones know what to get you!
Thank you once again for your support and we look forward to bringing you more exciting new products and programs over the coming year.
Season’s greetings and happy holidays.
Happy collecting!

off the presses2014 has arrivedThe Royal Australian Mint would like to thank all collectors who visited us at the Melbourne International Coin and Banknote Show in October. We were able to take this opportunity to launch our 2014 product range in the company of some lucky collectors and coin dealers. Brad Blaze, 2011 Australian Entertainer of the Year, was on hand to lend his incredible talents to our launch. Visit the Mint’s YouTube channel www.youtube.com/australianmint for more.
Be the last – then the firstAs we have done in previous years, the Royal Australian Mint is giving collectors the opportunity to press the final coin of 2013 – and the first coin of 2014. Those wishing to press the final coin of 2013 will need to be at the Mint by 2.30 pm on New Year’s Eve to go into the ballot. Doors open at 10 am on 1 January 2014 for the first strike of 2014. The first 100 people to strike a coin will receive a special certificate to mark the moment.
For up-to-date information on these events, please visit our Facebook page – www.facebook.com/RoyalAustralianMint or follow us on Twitter @royalaustmint
Terra Australis – the Journey continuesEach year the Royal Australian Mint seeks to introduce a unique, eye-catching, and engaging theme as a figurehead for its gallery press and mintmark collection. The Mint has selected the 1814 publication of Matthew Finders’ historic journal, A Voyage to Terra Australis, as the inspiration for this suite of coins in 2014. This coin design will be available on the Mint visitors press from 1 January 2014, and at selected shows throughout the year.
Mint Issue set to turn 100As you will see by the front cover, the November 2013 Mint Issue is the 99th edition – meaning our very own centenary is approaching fast!
For years, Mint Issue has served as a channel of information between you, our valued collectors, and the Mint.
February 2014 will see our 100th edition of Mint Issue hitting mailboxes around the country – and we have some big plans to help celebrate!
Keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter pages for developments between now and February.

In any given year the Royal Australian Mint produces hundreds of thousands of circulating and numismatic coins. Few people know exactly who is responsible for designing, minting, and releasing a particular coin, however.
So, with that in mind, we have peeled back the veil in order to introduce you to people who are instrumental in producing some of the finest coins on the planet.
They call themselves “Minties”.
Anthony OhResearch and Development Automation Manager
Like many other manufacturers across the globe, the Royal Australian Mint is constantly looking at ways to produce innovative products in an efficient and timely manner. The limits to what we can achieve are largely determined by the latest available technologies.
As the Research and Development Automation Manager, Anthony Oh is responsible for looking at new ways to help build the manufacturing capabilities of the Mint. This, in part, involves the implementation of packing robots –
fondly referred to as “Roxie” and “Rocky” – and a new coloured coin process development.
“It excites me to have the opportunity to apply the latest technologies to improve our production processes. I also enjoy leading our team of engineers who are creating new innovative ideas to solve complex challenges,” said Anthony.
Indeed, without the work of the Research and Development team, some of the Mint’s more celebrated releases of late would not have been possible.
“I enjoyed being part of the 2012 $2 Remembrance Day Poppy Colour Coin production as well as the production for the 2013 Queen’s Coronation $2 Colour Circulating Coin – both show how all sections of the Mint work well together,” said Anthony.

To commemorate over a century of nail-biting contests – and in anticipation of those yet to come – the Royal Australian Mint has partnered with Cricket Australia to produce this striking, official Ashes coin.
When an Australian cricket team first won on English soil in 1882, a British newspaper, The Sporting Times, famously published a satirical obituary stating that English cricket had died, the body had been cremated and the ashes had been taken to Australia. The subsequent 1882-1883 English tour of Australia was dubbed “the quest to regain The Ashes”…
Now, one hundred and thirty years later, the English Cricket Team arrive on our shores under different circumstances – as rightful holders of the now legendary terracotta urn, the symbol of one of the most celebrated and hotly contested rivalries in international sport. Australians will be hoping their team’s fortunes change over the summer.

Celebrated 19th century zoological illustrator Henry Constantine Richter was born into a family of renowned artists and sculptors around 1821. It is little wonder then that Richter, a man of amazing natural talent, was commissioned by famed wildlife author John Gould in 1844.
These beautifully designed coins capture the essence of Richter’s artistic talent – as well as the intrigue, intricacy, and creative expression that went into documenting what was then an almost unseen species in Europe.

The Korean War began on 25 June 1950, when North Korean forces invaded South Korea. Attrition warfare, reminiscent of the Western Front years before, ensued. Fierce fighting continued right up until the last day of the conflict, which was signaled by the signing of an armistice on 27 July 1953.
These striking coins produced by the Royal Australian Mint, commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean War. The depiction of a dove in flight and the word ‘peace’ in Korean is a reminder of the ultimate goal on the still-troubled peninsula.

With Remembrance Day serving as a reminder of those who have – and continue to – serve our nation valiantly, the Australia Remembers series has been created to recognise the people who have made history beyond the battlefields.
This year’s release pays tribute to those members of the clergy who have stood beside our soldiers and offered spiritual, moral, and ethical guidance in times of need.
Now in its 100th year of service, the Royal Australian Army Chaplains Department provides pastoral care to Australian soldiers and their loved ones through times of conflict and peace.

The Atlantic Puffin’s waddling gait and often peculiar behaviour have led it to be known fondly as the 'clown of the sea' and 'sea parrot'. This ‘colourful’ character rounds out the Mint’s 2013 Polar Animal series in eye-catching fashion.

Mottled-coated Weddell Seals can weigh as much as 600 kg – and a good thing too! These ‘smiling’ Antarctic locals are considered to have the southern-most distribution of any mammal on the planet, with only a thick layer of fatty blubber to protect them from the elements.

Coins and ChristmasImagine being that lucky person who wakes on Christmas morning to find a proof coin from the Royal Australian Mint. Or takes their new metal detector out for the first time on Boxing Day and discovers a 1930 penny buried in the backyard. There are a multitude of different ways that coins could help you to have a happy Christmas – but none of them are as steeped in English tradition as serving them in a Christmas pudding.
The tradition of hiding coins made Christmas puddings began during the Medieval era in England. Those family members who found a silver coin in their portion were said to have been granted luck and wealth for the year ahead. In Australia, we most often used threepence and sixpence coins as the sought-after prizes.
From 1910 to 1936, coins featured either Edward VII or George V and, the reverse of the threepence pictured the Australian Coat of Arms. George VI and Elizabeth II crowned the obverse from 1938 to 1964, and the reverse design featured three stalks of wheat. Many of these threepence coins were made at the Denver and San Francisco mints during World War II and bear special mintmarks, making them highly collectible amongst coin collectors who would love to find these coins in their Christmas stocking rather than a pudding!
Decimal currency sadly saw the end of this custom, since the cupro nickel combination in our silver-coloured coins can react with the pudding ingredients. Flip to page 28 to check out the Royal Australian Mint’s special Christmas Pudding Coin Pack, ready to inject some historical flavour to this year’s Yuletide festivities.
