abouT The guildAs we approach our 40th anniversary year, the Theatre Guild of Simsbury can be equally proud of its rich past and its potential for the future. We’ve added to the breadth of our reach over the years, and for the first time, this year we participated in Simsbury’s Septemberfest, performed a new play written just for us at the historic Meeting House, and will take part in Simsbury Celebrates on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. You’ll also find TGS on the board of the Simsbury Land Trust’s Simsburyopoly game. The Theatre Guild of Simsbury is enjoying a new vitality as we have welcomed many new members, veterans and neophytes alike, both on and offstage, drawn by the irresistible pull of working in live theater.

Next year we’ll celebrate 40 years of making magic onstage. And what a celebration year we have planned, as you you’ll see in our ad later in the program. We remain as committed as ever to bringing top quality theater productions to the community. This continues to be our mission—anyone who has even the slightest desire to try theater should join us, grow with us, and make new friends along the way. We welcome anyone who wants to give theater a try—onstage or backstage. And did we mention, it’s fun?

For more information, check our website, www.theatreguildsimsbury.org, or call us at 860-658-0666 to let us know you’re interested.

So, enjoy the Connecticut community theater premiere of Curtains. And stay tuned for next year—it’s going to be awesome!

We are often asked “where does this orchestra come from?” Friends, colleagues or acquaintances of the music director, the orchestra members are all local citizens who, when asked to play, enthusiastically say yes. They play for the love of music and theater and, in so doing, add a professional touch to our productions. An integral part of our Community Theater troupe, this year’s TGS Orchestra includes: an Insurance Company Safety Engineer, a Machinist, an IT Systems Engineer, a Sales Employment Consultant, a School Bus Driver, a Musician/Entrepreneur/Baker, a Nephrologist & Internist, a Piano playing Suzie Homemaker/Chicken Farmer, a Network Design & Implementation Engineer, a Music Librarian, an Engineering Manager for CNC Airframe and Jet Engine Manufacture, and several retirees (former Music and Fine Arts Teachers and Administrators, a former Software Developer, a former Security Services Sales and Distribution Representative, and a former Pension Plan Manager). Now that is a true Community! More importantly, that is a fine Orchestra!

Who’s Who in The casTLESLIE AUER-ANDERSON (Ensemble) This is Leslie’s 4th play with TGS. She played a Boylan Sister in Annie, a Muzzy Boy in Thoroughly Modern Millie and a Bianca Girl in Kiss Me, Kate. Leslie took on the challenge (the singing is the best part) of TGS after a long stretch after high school while raising a family. Leslie lives with her talented and handsome husband Rick (Oscar) in Simsbury. A big thanks to the Greater Hartford Arts Council for all of their support!

RICK ANDERSON (Oscar Shapiro) Rick is nearing his 50th play (his goal is to be in as many plays as his age – it may be elusive to catch up!). He has had the great satisfaction in TGS of playing in ensemble, named parts, and lead roles. Most recently, he played the very nasty Owen Musser in The Foreigner. In last year’s TGS musical, Kiss Me Kate, he was seen as General Harrison Howell. But his favorite role with TGS was in Annie as Daddy Warbucks (for which he shaved his head – something that would be even easier now!).  Other favorites in his resume are Jerry in Zoo Story, Teddy Roosevelt in Arsenic and Old Lace. Thanjona Kerhar in Orphans of Eternity, Jorgy in Other People’s Money, Col. Puckerup in Victoria Falls and Richard III in the Last Trial of Richard III.  He has also played Capt. von Trapp in Sound of Music and Harold Hill in the Music Man.  In Curtains, Rick gets to be Oscar Shapiro, where he happily gets to sing and act, but is gratefully spared the dancing (just check out what the rest of the cast has to do!). By day he is an IT Enterprise Architect.  Rick is very happy that his dancing partner in life, Leslie, is also in this show!

OLIVIA BENSON (Dancer/Ensemble) This is Olivia’s first show with TGS. She has appeared in other local productions as a dancer including: Beauty and the Beast and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat – (Thomaston Opera House ) and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the Warner Theatre. Olivia lives in Harwinton and is a senior at Lewis S. Mills High School going through the stressful process of applying for colleges. However, most of her time out of school is spent at Dance Arts Centre either taking class or student teaching. This is Olivia’s 14th year there and she absolutely loves to dance! Special thanks to Olivia’s parents and friends for their constant support, and to Mr. Mark for introducing Olivia to such an amazing group of people as TGS; it’s been a great experience getting to work with you outside of the studio!

NANCY BROWNSTEIN (Joany) Nancy is back for her second show with the TGS. Last year she appeared as the Wardrobe Lady and was in the ensemble in Kiss Me, Kate. Nancy’s day job is Senior Counsel for Travelers Environmental Litigation Group. She is also a member of the Travelers Chorale and the Farmington Valley Jewish Congregation-Emek Shalom Choir. Nancy lives in Avon with her three kids, Nina, Sam and Will, her boyfriend Bill and her dog, Mac. Nancy is thrilled once again to be working with her “techie” daughter, Nina, who makes us all sound terrific.  She would also like to say a special thank you to her family for being so encouraging and understanding!

KIM CAMPAGNA (Dancer/Ensemble) Kim is thrilled to be in her third show with TGS. Previously Kim appeared as a dancer and ensemble member in Kiss Me, Kate and a tap-dancing stenographer and ensemble member in Thoroughly Modern Millie. She is CFO and co-owner of Novare Electronics, LLC; a residential and commercial electronics business in Avon. Kim would like to thank her wonderful husband, Bill, and kids, Cassie, Max and Olivia for all of their love and support.

DANA CULLIGAN (Georgia Hendricks) Dana has appeared in many TGS productions through the years, most recently as a Too Darn Hot dancer in last year’s Kiss Me, Kate and as Alice in Thoroughly Modern Millie. She is thrilled to play the role of Georgia, this time around. When not carrying on with her theater pals, Dana loves being a fashion advisor for Lia Sophia jewelry. She also enjoys helping people organize their photos, and makes custom photo albums for clients as a Personal Photo Organizer. A big thank you goes out to my family, for their patience and support: Caitlin, my fellow boa-babe; Ryan, my singing inspiration…and to my wonderful husband Mark, without whose love and support none of this would be possible. A special thank you to Kim for always being there, and lastly but not leastly, “Bzzzzzzzz!” (You know who you are.)

Darlene has been an integral part of the TGS Board since 1994 in various capacities, including past President, as well as costume designing for TGS and other community and equity theaters for the past 18 years. Darlene is the owner of “Your Best Move” an organizing, staging and downsizing business and has her own antique and collectibles business, Davis Collectibles, where she sells at several antique shops and on-line and conducts estate sales for clients.

KATHY DAYTON (Bambi Bernet) This is Kathy’s fourth show with TGS. Kathy appeared as a featured dancer in “Steam Heat” in The Pajama Game, a tap-dancing stenographer in Thoroughly Modern Millie, and Kiss Me, Kate. When first out of college, Kathy traveled internationally with “Up With People.” Kathy works at Hall High School and lives in Bristol with husband Ken, and her two darling boys, Harrison and Parker. A special thanks to my wonderful family and for their endless love and support. I love you more than you know!

LAURA GARGER (Dancer/Ensemble) Laura is appearing in her seventh musical with TGS. Hard to believe it has been almost eight years since she left sunny Arizona for the harsh winters of CT. Still she is happy to have found her peeps at TGS. Laura recently appeared with TGS in the world premiere of Betsy Maguire’s Murder at 3 Corner Pond staged at the Simsbury Meeting House. Other favorite roles and shows include: Working (Kate), Godspell (Robin, Peggy and Sonya), All Night Strut, The Secret Garden (co-producer, AriZoni award for best production), Jesus Christ Superstar and Taking Steps. A heartfelt thank you to my wonderful family, Greg, Caroline, and Katherine, who support me in so many ways, I love you! Enjoy the show, and see if you can figure out whodunit!

WILSON KEITHLINE (Ensemble) Wilson found us at Septemberfest and we are so glad that he did! Wilson has his own law practice in Simsbury. His last acting experience was as a shepherd in his kindergarten Christmas pageant. But now, “It’s an honor and a joy to be in show business.”

BOB KNIGHT (Harv/Ensemble) This is Bob’s third turn with TGS after performing in recent productions of Kiss Me, Kate and Thoroughly Modern Millie. Bob is now retired, lives in Simsbury, and enjoys life doing things like performing in the theater, being with his grandchildren and traveling.

JENNA LEVITT (Carmen Bernstein) This is Jenna’s first production with TGS and hopes it will not be her last! She is thrilled to be part of this wonderfully warm and talented group of people. No stranger to the stage, favorite roles include Aldonza in Man of La Mancha, Mrs. Meers in Thoroughly Modern Millie, and Gertrude McFuzz in Seussical. For the past 11 years, Jenna has been teaching with New Britain Public Schools. A huge thanks to the directors, cast and crew- and to Phil, for his never-ending encouragement and support.

JIM METzLER (Harv/Dancer) Since joining TGS for the June Cabaret, “Best Musical: A Night at the Tonys,” Jim has been busy with a couple repeat performances: As Husband, in The Marriage of Metzler (a role he’s held for 25 years) and most recently as Dr. Everett Scott and Preacher in The Rocky Horror Show — third time’s the charm. Friends and family may recall some other roles from Jim’s past, including Beast in Beauty and the Beast, Bungee in A New Brain, Bishop in Anything Goes, Baker in Showboat, Boris Blastimov in The Spy Who Killed Me, Beadle Bamford in Sweeney Todd, and Bert Berry in 42nd Street. TGS is very grateful to Jim for jumping in at the last minute to pinch hit for injured cast member Bob Knight.

WILLARD MINTON (Sasha Iljinsky) See biography in Production listing.

NICOLE OADES (Dancer/Ensemble) Nicole feels lucky to be dancing with so many great friends in this show and for such an amazing choreographer. Nicole has danced in a variety of musicals and dance performance productions in CT, NY and NJ. Favorites include Miss Saigon, Thoroughly Modern Millie, My Favorite Year and In-(E)motion. Alex has performed in the Connecticut All State and Northern Regional Music Festivals and is in multiple singing groups, including Chorus Angelicus, Gaudeamus, The B-sharps, and the Canton High School Chamber Singers. He would like to thank his parents and Mrs. Cohn for giving him this opportunity.

Other roles in TGS productions include Captain Von Trapp in The Sound of Music, Ken in Rumors, Sergeant Trotter in The Mousetrap, the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz, Bert Healy in Annie, Trevor Graydon in Thoroughly Modern Millie, and Nunzio in Over the River and Through the Woods. Steve has worked in several capacities for TGS, including producer, board member, and backstage crew member. Steve has performed in a number of productions including Harvey, A Streetcar Named Desire, Barefoot in the Park, All My Sons, and The Music Man. He teaches fifth grade and has a rock band that plays throughout the area. Steve dedicates his performance to his beautiful wife, Kathryn-Ann, and his two wonderful sons, Liam and Rory.

LEN OREMLAND (Sidney Bernstein) Len is very excited to once again join the talented players of TGS in the CT community theater debut of Curtains. He last took the TGS stage in 2009’s production of Thoroughly Modern Millie (Bun Foo), and previously appeared in the Guild’s Fall ‘08 Caberet (as the Phantom and Alfred Doolittle).  He is currently co-producing (and has a small role) in the indie film Brilliant Mistakes (http://www.salisburyfilms.com), and from the “life imitating art” side of things, is an investor/producer in several Broadway/off-Broadway productions, including Memphis (2010 Tony Award, Best Musical), Berenstain Bears, LIVE (the Musical), Virtually Me, and the upcoming 2012 Broadway revival of Annie.  Len also sings, and plays guitar with the TGS house band, “Vinyl Tap”.  By day, Len works on Wall Street.  He deeply thanks the Producers & Directors, cast and crew for including him in the show, and for their hard work towards it success!  He also thanks his family for their patience and support (still waiting to actually perform with Rachel)! Love you guys!
