prESidENT’S pad

It is with great pleasure I take on the role as President of TSOA (Vic) Inc. It is an honour and privilege to be involved in an organization with such a long and proud history in the Australian motoring community.Thank you to the outgoing members of the TSOA general committee being Keith Atherton, Stuart Price and Ursula Weidenmuller for all your efforts over a long period ensuring our great club has continued to prosper and grow.

I’d also like to thank and welcome the new members of our committee being Keith Ondarchie, Lindsay Coleman and Cate Forbes for putting your hand up. In addition, thanks to Vince Perillo for moving into the role of secretary. I know Vince is already hard at work with his many new responsibilities. Thanks also to Phill Gibbs, Jim Cain, Roger Jeary and Mark Campbell for staying on for another year.

Having just returned from another exciting weekend up at Winton involved in our pursuit of glory I have spent the last few days with much to smile about, a few things to ponder and very little to ‘cry’ about. We should all be proud of our club, our conduct, our competitive spirit, our sense of fair play and most of all our people. I received a lot of feedback from many people up and down pit lane over the course of the weekend on how well respected we as a club are.

I have learnt much from our outgoing El’ Pres’ and look to continue his good work as we move forward. Like Keith, I look forward to your feedback, suggestions and assistance to ensure our club remains relevant to you, our members.

As a committee we will continue to offer a vibrant magazine, a variety of activities and a monthly general meeting all designed to meet your needs. All we ask in return is your consideration of our activities, participation and feedback on what works well and suggestions of things we can, as a club, improve on.

We have a busy year ahead with our annual Concour d’Elegance early next year, the Macedon Ranges tour where Triumph is the featured marque, our hosting of the National Rally and participation in the 2 major 6 hour events at Phillip Island and Winton. In addition to these major events there is also many smaller, more informal activities such as the monthly coffee mornings which continue to grow in popularity and the various EMR’s. Can I ask all members to please consider these events as they review the calendar in TRaction and look to attend where you

can as it provides a great opportunity to get to know each other and most of all have some fun.

Finally, I must thank Peta for her support and encouragement to take on this and other roles within TSOA. I just need to find a suitable TR for Peta to call her own.

I’m excited about the year ahead and look forward to working with the new committee and the broader TSOA community to continue to build our club.

WOW what big shoes’ I have to fill!!! Following on from Vince does seem a bit of a big task but I am very thankful that we have a great committee and the offer of help form the outgoing Committee members. My willingness to fulfil this vacancy to in support of the great job the current committee has done over the last three years and my passion and commitment for TSOA.The next 12 months will be challenging with the upcoming TSOA Nationals to be included with our regular major events.

I would like to encourage members as much as possible to participate or visit our 2011 Winton 6 Hour Relay team (see following pages). One of the events I would like to promote is the MACEDON

GRAND TOUR 2012. Triumph is the featured marque for the 2012 Tour and we would love to see as many of our members there as possible. Please put 31 March 2012 in you diary. There will be more information in the coming editions of Traction and in the meantime you can visit the web site: www.macedonrangesgrandtour.com.au

We are getting ready for our first major event for 2012! TSOA Concours. Our committee is preparing the event with a small sub- committee established, unfortunately as yet we do not have a Concours Director – but I am using my best persuasive talents and I hope to announce the new director soon. (I do feel a bit like the St Kilda football club trying to convince Mick Malthouse to join the party).

There are some suggestions and one that is being floated is that maybe the event should be in March rather than

February. What do you think?

We still have plenty of stock in Regalia We will in future issues of Traction advertise the stocks and hopeful have photos of the items. We may need some attractive models, any volunteers?

The support for social activities in increasing and the Mid-week morning coffee is providing and (i think should be a) great opportunity to share lots of old stories with your TSOA friends. These are regularly held on the last Wednesday of the month: - check out the Activities list.

I am keen to have any comments or suggestion to take to the Committee. Please email me at

TappET NOiSE – SEpTEmBEr Social activities from Roger and Jim

A new year and we are back at the workface looking at our social requirements for the next twelve months. Do not believe there will be much difference but Fish and Chips on the Beach will return courtesy of Jan Shaw, looking at returning the bare foot lawn bowls night and the Trivia NightThis year will be our turn at running the National Rally and our hard working National Rally committee under the guidance of Max Hayes will be looking for our support during the year in attending fund raising activities. Also we are urging members to attend the Rally and if you cannot do the whole program speak to the committee to attend over a short period say the weekend.

At the last “Christmas in July” the club took a substantial financial loss due to the

arrangement undertaken with the venue in that we had to advise the numbers we were booking for and pay for those numbers as they had made certain commitments to cater for those numbers. A number of people who booked to attend did not, in some instances for good reason, but we the club had to pay for all non attendance. We have decided that in future where such a circumstance again is used we will seek payment in full prior to the event.

The last morning Coffee at Karinga was very well attended and the “gone north caravan mob “ are back and made their presence felt which was great. Deliberations are being made whether to continue the Coffee meet as it fell on the last Wednesday of the month and we had planned for it to have a holiday during daylight saving time replaced with an evening drive with a meal at the conclusion on the 4th Wednesday of the

month. Will keep you informed.

The annual end of year BBQ is with us, again at Chequered Flag Stables, Mentone , with the kind support of Rob Splatt. This meet will also be our awards night , it is always a great informal night. Ladies please bring your usual salads and sweets the meat is provided.

We have just returned from the AROCA 6 hour and as usual a great socialising weekend, can just remember a late night ( early morning ) drink . The backroom crew supporting the drivers are now quite surgical in their work in support of the drivers, and if you have not yet participated please do.

First Twilight Run Wednesday 26th October and the last MSCA event is at Calder on a Saturday 5th November and the last EMR for the year is Sunday 30th October. Hope to see you all at one of these events . Details are in Traction.

8 TRaction November 2011

COmpETiTiON rEpOrTWell, here goes. I must write an article to keep you informed about whats happening in the TSOA Competition world.

T

THENIt is a long time since I’ve looked at this job from this side of the bench. Not that I’ve been here before, my son was,but then my family was in one position or the other on Committee, and there was a lot of mingling.

This was not only in my Family, this was the way of TSOA,Be it competition Social or whatever. It took about 12 to 16 people to put Traction together, for instance.

So I will start in the past and proceed on to today. The TSOA Calander consisted of Motorkhanas,Hillclimbs and Sprints (with MSCA).There was Occaisioanal treasure hunts or economy runs.

We also started the path to Concours, although that concept was frowned upon back then.

The Comp Sect was very busy.

Organising events and venues.

This was a time when Triumph was competing in Prod Sports. And one or two TR’s in Historic Racing. But support for Racing from TSOA was not very obvious.TSOA still owned the 6 Hour Relay, but this was meeting a lot of anti feeling and so it was dropped as a club activity. Support for State Racing was very strong and TSOA supplied many officials and support for the MSCA rounds of that series.

NOWNow we Jump forward to find the scene very different. Indeed over the last couple of years a huge shift has occurred.,meaning the trend is not complete.

A list of Competition activities would be the best thing.

(No particular order)

SPRINTS (Actually they are Supersprints) Run with MSCA. This is a good place to Drive your TRIUMPH fast & safely

HILLCLIMBS

Run with MSCA

Another opportunity & a good starting place.

REguLARITY

Run with MSCA Designed by TSOA for Triumphs. A very controlled form of Sprints

This is the traditional events to use for the Pointscore.

CONCOuRS

Now I know I’m going to gett flack. This is now a very important part of TSOA & it is a competition.

6 HOuR RELAY

Now a Major CLUB effort. TSOA still helps with Officials,to run this event.

We have been a recent winner, and could be again. The expertise is fantastic. Many members attend to help the TSOA team effort. or just to watch.

THE NEXT STEP

You will remember me saying that in the past support, particularly for Historic Racing was a very low priority. Well times change.

HISTORIC RACINg

After a few years of having a display at the Phillip Island Historic meeting an increased interest in this form of Racing has occurred. All Triumph models are now elegible for this status. Many members have become converted supporters and a lot of Triumphs driven by members are regularly competing

STATE RACE SERIES

An invite to compete in ALL British has seen TRIUMPH showing very well. Many TSOA members have become regular spectators.

OPEN HILLCLIMBS

TSOA members regulary compete at various Hillclimbs. Historic ,Open or

interclub. The RobRoy interclub is very popular with members,as drivers or spectators.

NATIONAL MEETINgS

A Competition event is part of every National Meeting. Members can compete or watch and get the feel of a Triumph at full speed.

ALL TRIuMPH RACE

Not given much coverage ,this event occurs midyear at Wakefield Park ACT. Victorian Drivers have scored very well in this MultiState event. Some members only drive at this event.

What NOW I will try and tie all these various facets together. Well at least to report them to the Members.

I hope to increase your interest in all forms of Motorsport and encourage you to try your car ot on a track somewhere. It was built for Sport try it you will both love it.

Marque Sports Car Association (MSCA) REPORTMSCA is Now planning events for 2012.

The last event for this year sees a return to CALDER. Come out for a while and have a look.

r epresenting TSOA Vic were Phil Nicholson in the thundering green V8, Nigel Montgomery in

the howling silver Bimmer, Ed Ferguson in the orange Hot Wire Special, Rod Jellett in the Canary Corty and your author in the Gorgeous Sex-Bomb TR-6. Of course, there were the usual rabble of Clubmen, Nissans, specials, a West, a Lotus and even a white Ferrari complete with pit crew.

The sprinters kept themselves busy chasing each other around the track with Phil having some fairly lively dices with David Langmead in his Corvette and Ben Allen in a Lotus Esprit. Ultimately Phil was outgunned but put up a good fight.

Nigel was as tidy and fast as ever in the CSL and Ed, once he learnt how to bypass the steering lock and get his car started, was right on the money and getting his eye in for the 6-Hour with lots of laps. It’s amazing what people will do when faced with the prospect of a long drive home after travelling to the track without their TR7 keys. I think it must have been the sight of Lindsay Coleman approaching the car with a rather sizable hammer and chisel-like implement that spurred Ed on to find a way to get the car going.

Of course there was also the main event of the day, Regularity, with Rod and myself fighting for the championship and the glory. Rod was pleased with his progress (see photo) and the Cortina

The September round of the MSCA championship was held at Winton on the 25th with fine weather and a promise of lots of run time due to numbers appearing to be marginally down on previous and recent rounds.

seemed happy as it burbled around the track, cutting some pretty regular times, however, he seemed to be having a bit more trouble than usual in matching his target times with regularity, but despite this, he still scored well.

The 6 was looking resplendent on its new wheels and was clearly the best looking car in the group so it must have scored bonus points, but alas, its pilot had obviously not had his All-Bran for breakfast and was much too slow in the first run, meaning quite a few lost points, a little too slow in the second (a few more points lost) and then blindingly, tyre meltingly too fast in the last (SO many points lost). There must have been something in the ginger (red?) cordial that Jan made for me.

All in all another fantastic day supported by Roger, Jim, Lindsay, George Stephen and the MSCA crew. Thanks also to Phil’s mate, Greg Howard for some of the photos used in this article.

I just need to remember to be more regular.

in Australia, any new Morgan despite its price tag, will sell as quickly as Morgan Cars Australia can get one

on the high seas ; now that a technical problem with the Australian Design Rules which temporarily curtailed deliveries during the early 2000’s has been overcome. It is no secret that Sir John Black, as the head of the Standard Motor Company had tried to acquire the family owned Morgan Motor Company, mainly because Sir John had wanted his own traditional sports car in his range of vehicles, primarily to compete against his arch business rival William Lyons from Jaguar.Jaguar had after the Second World War developed the stream-lined Jaguar XK 120 roadster to compete for the fast developing sports car market in America.

Standards around that time, were supplying the Morgan Company with the sturdy Standard - Vanguard 68 b.h.p., four cylinder engine for their Morgan Plus Four roadster. Again, it seems almost unbelievable that the dictatorial Sir John Black failed in his bid to secure the Morgan company, but then he

quietly moved on to develop his highly successful and popular Triumph TR series. However, Sir John never saw the TR succeed because whilst recuperating from injuries suffered in a motoring accident outside Standards, Banner Lane factory, he was forced to resign and hand-over his position to the much younger Alick Dick, who was to over-see the TR 2 / TR 3 success ; before a recession hit hard the British motor industry and as a result Standard - Triumph went into financial disarray and Leyland took over the company ownership.

On reflection, the success of the Triumph TR sports revolved around the development and modifications of the robust Standard- Vanguard wet-liner four cylinder engine, used in the TR2 through to the TR4A model ; which was capable of a genuine 100 m.p.h. During the late 1950’s, the Triumph TR was regarded as the world’s most successful rally car.

It was in 1954, that the Triumph TR2 engine was first used in the Morgan Plus Four roadster and the Standard-Triumph Motor Company continued to supply the legendary wet sleeved, four cylinder TR engine until 1968. As everyone knows 1967 was the year when the bullet-proof TR (4A) engine was replaced by the new six cylinder, fuel injected engine in the TR5 ; so the Morgan Company had to find an alternative supplier for engines for their hand-built roadsters. History clearly shows that Morgan’s have never built their own engines or gear boxes

preferring to source them from other suppliers - Ford, Rover, Triumph etc. .

Here in Victoria, Bryson Industries had been the long–time Morgan distributors but let the franchise lapse, circa 1954 - 1955, despite possibly eight, TR powered Morgan’s, with the headlights sunk into the front mudguards and a new-look curved radiator grille, (plus the first-time ever front bumper bar), being sold Australia-wide during 1954.

Morgan’s have always been quite rare in number in Australia, but fewer examples were imported new after Bryson’s withdrew and specialised in Jaguar Cars. (Not-withstanding, the odd pre-owned Morgan were privately imported by Morgan fanatics returning from stays in Europe and the United Kingdom ).

In 1961, the Australian Morgan distribution rights were again sought and obtained by the Ward Brothers ( Barrie and Ken Ward ) in Sydney, to market brand new TR3A powered Morgan Plus Four roadsters. Whilst it was thought that the Wards may be rushed with orders for the Plus Four, out-put from the Malvern Link Morgan factory was, as in the past, very limited ( less than 500 cars per year) so waiting lists had many hard-core enthusiasts world-wide hanging in there for three -to - four years or more awaiting for delivery.

Ken Ward was one of the founding members of the Morgan Owners Club (MOCA) in New South Wales in 1958. Like car clubs at that time, activities

revolved around sporting and social activities and some keener members competed in N.S.W. open events. Leading driver David McKay made history in a Morgan, when he won the first race ever run on the new Warwick Farm circuit, and TSOA’s Ray Cook would have memories of competing against Ron Coulston’s red, Morgan Plus Four at Warwick Farm in Production Sports car events .

It was only a matter of time, when a branch of the Morgan Owners Club of Australia was created in Melbourne circa 1967, and the branch affiliated with CAMS and also became a member club of MSCA when first established in 1971.

Circa 1979, Peter Morgan the then head of the Morgan Company, visited Australia to open the new Victorian showroom for Vic Kaye’s Museum Motors, the then Morgan distributors, situated just near Gisborne at the Calder Highway and Mount Macedon road intersection. The weather was foul, but it did not dampen the Moggie car club members and enthusiasts who drove from all over Australia to see and hear Peter Morgan. Over 40 shiny Morgan’s created an impressive sight on Museum Motors apron despite the bleak conditions. ( The Morgan and TVR distributors showroom outside of Gisborne was demolished when the four lane Calder Freeway to Bendigo was constructed sometime during the 1990’s ? ).

Not surprisingly, at our spectacular 1989 TSOA concours, conducted at the Nunawading Civic Centre , well known Morgan owner Peter Fench, along with four or five members of the Morgan Owners Club of Australia, Victorian Branch shared the spotlight when they proudly displayed their TR engine Morgan roadsters and created a lot of interest in doing so.

While not common-place, the classic TR powered Morgan Plus Four is the kind of British sports car which still has a loyal and enthusiastic following .

a hiSTOrY OF ThE Tr3 in 1952 the Type 20TS (often referred

to as the TR1) is introduced at Earl’s Court Motor Show. Built on a prewar

Standard chassis and sporting a dual-carb version of the Standard Vanguard engine, this show car looked much like the TR2s and TR3s that later followed, although rear body styling was quite different, with a more rounded, traditional look featuring exposed spare tire.

Ken Richardson was soon hired by Standard-Triumph to oversee development of the car into what became the TR2. The car eventually gained its own purpose-built chassis frame, which incorporated front suspension originally developed for the Mayflower. The Vanguard engine

(2088cc) was further developed into a reliable 90hp, under 2-liter (1991cc) engine. The rear of the body was redone to provide a trunk and an enclosed space for the spare.

A prototype TR2 was run on a closed stretch Jabbeke highway by Ken Richardson in spring 1953, achieving close to 125mph in “speed” trim and around 105mph in “street” trim.

The first “off-tools” TR2s were produced in summer 1953. Various continual developments, changes and improvements to both body and mechanical specifications led to the TR3 model for 1956 and the TR3A

version around 1958. Production of the TR3 largely ended by 1961, replaced by the mechanically similar (but with much more modern styling and comfort features) TR4. A small number (3,331?) of TR3Bs were built for the North American market in 1962, largely to TR3A specification, although most of these had the larger 2138cc engine and all had the all-synchro TR4 transmission.

Total TR2-3B production was something under 80,000 cars. Also, several other cars shared basic TR2-3 running gear, such as the Swallow Doretti, Peerless, Warwick, and the (Vignale) Italia. TR engines also powered versions of the Morgan sports car.

When did you join TSOA?I joined TSOA around 1996.

What attracted you to TSOA?Bruce was a member before me and we shared his interest in TR’s.

What interests do you have within the Club (Competition, Social, Concours, Rally’s,)?I currently am not actively participating in the club apart from the 6hr at Winton. The family up till this year ran the communications and various other duties.

What interests do you have outside the Club?I am heavily involved in the administration of lawn bowling and am currently President of our new Sandbelt Region which has 41 clubs to administer to. I am also a bowls Umpire and Coach.

I am on the Board of Management of PAST. An organization which assists disabled people organise their lives.

I have nearly completed a course to become a Marriage and Funeral Celebrant.

Our family is very close and I am heavily involved in my children and 7 grandchildren’s lives.

What roles have you had in TSOA?I was Director of the Concours for a couple of years and on the committee of same for another couple.

I was Director of the Committee that organized the Victorian National Rallye and a couple of trips away.

I assisted Bruce to compile Traction, spending many hours cutting and pasting pictures and articles.

I organized a disabled and cystic fibrosis children groups to attend a day at the Grand Priz circuit in St. Kilda and one at the Lord Somers Camp in Somers. The children were driven in our cars and we had a stretch limo for the parents to have a ride in. We were able to give them show bags that had been donated and finished the day off with bbq’s. They were great events.

We organized Fish and Chips on the Beach which was held on Australia day whilst living in Hampton and I held it this year at my new apartment in Carrum.

We also ran bowling nights at the Moorabbin Bowling Club.

Bruce and I along with our family ran Trivia nights to raise money for the 6hr event.

I was also involved in the racing side of TSOA in various capacities and at one time raced a Spitfire, not very well I must admit.

Changes have you seen? Most of the changes are that we have all got greyer, but all the same events are being run. I think the racing side of the club has grown.

What does being a life member mean to you?I feel humbled to have a Life Membership. Bruce and I loved everything we did and enjoyed organizing the events. We got as much out of them as the participants.

How do you see you have contributed to TSOA?My contribution is only what I wanted to do. It was enjoyed.

What have been the highlights of your time in TSOA?The highlights were all of it, I miss the friendships we made and the enjoyment we shared, but my life has changed forever.

What do you see for the future of TSOA?

I hope that the TSOA continues as it is. The cars will age and the memberships will change but it has survived this long, I think only the faces will change.

What cars have you owned?I personally owned 3 Stags, and one spitfire. Bruce and I owned a TR2, TR6, GT6, plus had financial interest in Wayne’s 2500.

What you own nowI only own Bruce’s TR2, which unfortunately is up for sale. It will be going to Shannons next auction. I hope it will be loved as much as Bruce loved it. It is now, the oldest one in Australia which makes it pretty special. Bruce hoped, and I would like to see it retained somewhere in the TSOA but if that is not to be, I will accept that. I drive a C200 Mercedes Benz.

What would you like to ownI would like to own another STAG (as long as it was not going to break down and someone or something would put the roof up and down for me.)

Most joyous time in your TRThe most joyous time in our TR was the Victorian National Rally we organised.

Most frustrating time in your TRThe most frustrating time was the trivia nights, when the people who we were raising money for, did not make the effort to attend.

Describe yourself in three words

Enjoy being busy.

Your favourite restaurants

I love Italian and seafood restaurants.

Who gives you inspirationBruce was my inspiration. He still lives in my head and many decisions come from there.

Who would you like to meet?I would like to meet Ita Buttrose.

motorsport of course requires great teamwork . No driver who is racing toward the chequered

flag gets there by himself. It is always the result of the considerable work and effort of his team. His support team. In nearly all forms of motor racing it is usually one driver vs the rest, including the other drivers in his team. There are some interesting exceptions (eg Irvine and Schumacher) of course, but the principle generally holds true.

That’s what makes the Six Hour Relay Race such an interesting event. In this event, no driver is competing against a team mate, simply because it is a relay, with only one member of the team on the track at one time. The performance of the team depends on the performance of every driver in the team and of course on the quality of the team management and support. It is an ideal concept for Club motorsport.

The Official Program of the Six Hour Relay Race promoted and organised by the Marque Sports Car Association (MSCA) contains an interesting history of this event, which I thought would be of interest to all members, so I have reproduced it below.

“The idea of a 6 Hour Relay Race belongs to long time Austin 7 devotee John Whitehouse who saw this type of event in England and brought the concept back to Australia. The first 6 Hour was organised by the Austin 7 Club and held at Fishermens Bend.

In 1962 the race moved to the Calder Circuit and stayed at the popular one mile circuit until 1966. The 1964 race held a total of 17 entries and included the Triumph Owners Association, The Gippsland Car Club, The Victorian Amateurs Drivers Club with 3 teams, The Australian Motor Sports Club (which listed AROCA member Rod Stephens among its lineup), the Victorian Sporting Car Club, The Austin 7 Club with two teams, MG Car Club with 3 teams, Car Club RMIT with 3 entries and the MG Car Club of SA.

1967 saw yet another move, this time to Winton, with the Austin 7 Club still in the organising seat. The 1968 race, which attracted 25 teams, was also televised by Channel 0 (now 10). It also rained for all but 30 minutes of the race time too!

A look at the 1970 race program saw 25 teams listed with the race once again attracting a huge variety of cars ranging from TR 3’s and 4’s, Sprites, MG’s of varying shapes and models, Morgans, a variety of specials, to Bolwells, Austin 7, Ford Escorts, Lotus Elan, Morris Cooper, Peugeot, Vanguard, VW, Fiat,

Honda, Spitfire, Holden, Toyota Corolla, Elfin, Citroen, Ballot Oldsmobile, Riley Brooklands, Datsun and an Alfa Romeo driven by one John Jones who was a member of the Benalla Auto Club Team which had Mick Ronke as Team Manager (Mick is now managing Winton Raceway).

By the way, the outright track record at Winton back in those days was held by Neil Allen in the awesome Elfin Traco Chev sports car at 1 minute 5.2 seconds. Norm Beechey held the touring car record of 1 minute 15.9 seconds which he set in his Chev Nova back in March 1967. Peter Brock held the sports sedan record of 1 minute 14.2 seconds which he set in his Holden 179 powered Austin A30 a year earlier.

The 1971 race attracted 25 teams for the 10.30 am start and by the end of the day the CC RMIT Team No. 1 greeted the chequered flag as winner with 264 laps completed, finishing one lap ahead of the Ford Four Club’s No. 2 Team with the Bolwell Car Club Team a further 2 laps back.

For 1972 a full field of 25 teams lined up with the usual array of car clubs which seems to be the norm for the 6 hour. The smallest capacity car was the Whitmor 750 and the largest a 100/6 Austin Healey. In quite a contrast to the 6 Hour Races of more recent times the Porsche Club of NSW started the day on a handicap of 13 laps with their line up of 356A coupes and one 356B cabriolet. The Vintage Sports Car Club took the lead early in the race and were able to fend off all challenges to finish ahead of the Sprite Car Club’s No. 1 and No. 2 Teams.

In 1973 the Triumph Sports Owners Association had taken over the mantle as

The conduct of the Six Hour Relay held on October 18 and 19, 1997 at Winton Motor Raceway marked the re-establishment of this event after an absence of two years. It is a unique event, because it calls for a team approach . You may well say, “What’s new?”

event organisers and the race returned to Calder with 22 teams lining up. Of the 22, six comprised one make cars. As was the long standing practice of years gone by the field had an array of cars ranging from open wheelers to racing cars to street cars, sports sedans and rally cross cars. Light car Club identity and Sandown racetrack Clerk of Course, Ken Nancarrow was Clerk of Course for the event. The Jaguar Team moved into the lead as the race headed into its final hour, holding a 4 lap lead over the Austin Healey Owners Team No.1 entry. One hour later as the race drew to a

close the Jaguars still led the way with the Scottune Team in 2nd place and four teams shared third place.

The Torana Club took the honours in 1974 with the Austin Healey Sprite Drivers Club and the Huntingdale Auto Club filling the minor placings.

The race continued to run successfully through the eighties with the Sportscar Owners Club of Victoria winning the 84, 85 and 86 events to make a hat-trick that still has not been beaten. The next year saw more teams competing and the event became very competitive.

The last 6 Hour was run by the AROCA in 1994 and due to a downturn in the economy saw the event cancelled in 1995 and 1996. But with the enthusiasm and support of the Marque Sports Car Association we have been able to return this great event to the 1997 calendar.”

Judging by the success of the event at the week end, I am sure the meeting if properly promoted to interested clubs will remain on the calendar and prosper for many years to come. It provides a unique way for Clubs and interested members to gain an introduction to competitive motor sport.

The History of the Six Hour Relay Race continued…

ONE mEThOd FOr iNSTaLLiNG ThE aCCELEraTOr ShaFT BUShES iNTO ThE FirE WaLL OF a Tr6.After trying to install the accelerator shaft bush into my TR6 and totally destroying the bush I went onto the internet to find out how it is done. No one seems to know! There are various designs of brass bushes because people have given up trying to insert the original bush or modifying the original bush by cutting the thin lip off and gluing it in. The factory got them in so there must be a method, this is the method that I came up with.

You will probably need two people to do this, I did it by myself but there was no windscreen on the car. Using your second person to keep the bush in place and keep upward pressure on the bush pull both ends of the twine together from the engine bay side to draw the thin lip of the bush through the hole. This is not easy and it will take some time so be patient and the bush will eventually pop into place. Soapy water may help. This is the same method as inserting the windscreen.

1 From the engine bay pass a loop of very strong twine through the accelerator shaft bush hole as in the diagram below. This diagram is looking from inside the car.

2 Now from inside the car place the loop of twine around the bottom of the bush and insert the top of the bush into the hole in the firewall as in the diagram below keeping tension on the twine.

There was a preponderance of Triumph Stags in the carpark and they seem to be holding their

value well among collectors in the U.K. I also went to the Ace Cafe in London

on the first Tuesday of the month when a cavalcade of collectors’ cars arrive and depart after their owners have displayed them and then eaten a meal. I was offered a glorious Triumph TR8 4.0 litre Grinnall for 5000 pounds and I have the owner’s phone number if anyone is interested. This meeting of enthusiasts is a ritual which has gone on for years and I have included a picture of a Triumph Stag for TRaction with me standing outside the Ace Cafe.

Also on my trip, I went to Jabbeke in Belgium, where they drove the E-Type Jag to 150 mph in 1961 and Reims in France, where apart from drinking Champagne,

I saw the old Grand Prix circuit where the long straight is now a public road. The car museum in Reims was fascinating, with many prototype French cars. I have attached a photo of a lone Triumph Spitfire that was on display there.

Keep up the good work, regards Bruce Webster.

I recently attended the Goodwood Revival and had a most wonderful two days just looking at the world’s most collectible and perfectly tuned cars. In one race alone, won by Kenny Brack in a 1964 AC Cobra Daytona, from Martin Brundle in a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, the grid consisted of 300 million pounds worth of cars.
