The Monthly Newsletter of Pilgrim
Lutheran Church 3901 First Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55409 (612) 825-5375
From the Desk of Pastor Pete Thankful
Philippians 4:6 is a Bible passage beloved by many Christians: ―Do not be anxious about
anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to
God.‖
The words teach the beautiful truth that we can take all of our worries and anxieties to the Lord.
Instead of ―spinning our wheels‖ with worry over the things that cause stress, we can pour out
our hearts to God. He hears and has compassion on us.
There are a couple of important words to think about in that Bible verse. ―By prayer and
petition,‖ it reads. What’s the difference between a prayer and a petition? Prayer is a general
term for talking to God—in a prayer we might thank God, or praise his name, or confess to him
a sin that troubles our consciences. ―Petition‖ is more specific and refers to asking God for help.
I believe there’s a valuable truth for us in the way that this verse uses two words to speak about
prayer. We usually think of prayer as asking for things, but as Paul writes these words he wants
to teach us that prayer isn’t just about asking. In all situations and seasons, we Christians have
reason to come before God in thanksgiving.

The reason is Jesus. Because of him our sins are forgiven, our relationship with God is restored and our
prayers are heard. We pray in the name of Jesus because he’s the one who brings us into the family of
God.
Another important word in the verse: ―thanksgiving.‖ Whatever we’re praying about we want to do it
with an attitude of thanksgiving. Even the hard things, the things that seem to have no solution and
problems that seem to have no end, we bring to God with thanksgiving. Could we even be so bold in
our faith as to thank God for the hard times? That might seem like a ridiculous idea, but if we think
back on our lives of faith we often find that it was the hard times that brought us closer to God and
more aware of his power in our lives.
This Thanksgiving holiday some of us are in hard times. Some of us are in good times. Most of us
would say that life is a mixture of both. In all times, we have reason to thank God. Jesus is the reason.

Stewardship Verse of the Month for November
This month we will look back to St. Paul, this time his second letter to the Corinthians,
Chapter 9 verse 7;
―Each man should give what he had decided to give in his heart to give, not reluctantly,
or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. "
Here St. Paul reminds us of what our attitude should be. "Cheerful givers" delight our Lord!! Whether
we give time, talent, or treasure, or all three, we are to do it gladly. We should feel no pressure to give
except from the love of Christ as we discussed in July. This giving should be done quietly, humbly
and with a genuine smile on our face. Notice that Paul says "give what each has decided in his heart.''
Love is in the heart, and as Christ's love touches our heart, how can we respond any other way but
cheerfully? Cheerful givers.... that's
us here at Pilgrim!!!
