Rules-Examples-Recommendations
What is the impact for the user?
November 2009 INIS Training Seminar 2
IndexingObjective and Purpose
The objective of indexing is to identify the content of an item by representing its concepts
The purpose of indexing is to assist in the retrieval of this item
Indexing simplifies the search process and facilitates the user’s finding of relevant information
November 2009 INIS Training Seminar 3
Indexing Rules
Completeness-index all important concepts
Specificity-index on the most specific level
Correctness-check the usage of the selected descriptor
Avoid underindexing and overindexing! Avoid indexing on several hierarchical
levels for one and the same concept
November 2009 INIS Training Seminar 4
Completeness
index all important concepts of a document by assigning 5 to 20 descriptors
A document with less than 3 descriptors cannot enter the data base!
Underindexing will result in incomplete search results!
Overindexing will result in non-relevant search results!

Thereagent reacts with iron in the pH range 6.0#approx#7.5 to form a yellow colored1:2 chelate which is very stable in methanol solution. Beer's law is obeyed in theconcentration range 0.05#approx#2.0 #mu#gmL"-"1 iron and separation procedure usinga short column filled with Amberlite XAD-7 nonionic chelating resin is proposed forthe spectrophotometric determination of traces of iron. The influence of severalions as interference was discussed. The separation of Fe(III) ion from the mixturesolution were carried out with the buffer solution (pH 5.0) and 0.25M HCl aseluents.

Specificity Specificity-index on the most specific
level Assign NTs instead of BTs
Info: all BTs of an indexer assigned descriptor will be added automatically during production (“upposting”)
Avoid indexing on several hierarchical levels for one and the same concept
Avoid indexing BTs; will result in incomplete or inaccurate search results
November 2009 INIS Training Seminar 8
Select the most specific descriptor: NT
November 2009 INIS Training Seminar 9
Index on the most specific level!(e.g.: MIXED NITRIDE FUELS)
MIXED NITRIDE FUELSUranium nitride mixed with plutonium nitride or
other nitrides. Index other nitrides if important.
BT1 nuclear fuelsBT2 fuelsRT ceramicsRT plutonium nitridesRT uranium nitrides
November 2009 INIS Training Seminar 10
Correctness
Correctness-check the usage of the selected descriptor
Consult the thesaurus and check the wordblock (scope note, BTs) of the selected descriptor to make sure that it is the appropriate one
Incorrect descriptors result in wrong search results!

Recommendation
… check the descriptor’s wordblock to decide if the descriptor is the correct and most specific one to represent a certain concept and if there are others to complete indexing Scope Note and BTs: Correctness NTs: Specificity Related terms: Completeness
Consult the thesaurus!
