When... Remember
Remember playing Red Light, Green Light in the yard for hours. Playing “Ring around the Rosie”, “London Bridge” and
“Red Rover-Red Rover”. Parents stood on the porch to call their kids home for supper- we didn't have cell phones
We kept the windows open to keep cool at night - no one had air conditioners to stay cool
Running through a sprinkler, drinking cold water from a hose Watching “Tom and Jerry” on Saturday morning car-toons,” It’s Howdy Doodie time”, “Cisco Kid”, “Sky King”,
“Beenie and Cecil”, and “Timmy and Lassie” Laughing so hard your stomach hurt or you wet your pants. Giving a friend a ride on the handle bars of your bike.
Class field trips with a soggy sandwich for lunch. Making a decision by saying “Eeny-meeny, miney mo”. A foot of snow was a dream come true. Burma shave signs - Fire escape tubes - Gum wrapper
chains - 15 cent hamburgers - 5 cent pack baseball cards - Catching fire flies would fill an entire evening of fun - Moms were home when we got home from school - KEEP GOD IN YOUR LIFE- - - We did!

Area WWII veterans, Gordon Smedley and Pat Devlin recently
toured the WWII Memorial in Washington D.C. as a part of a
group of 35 WWII veterans from Illinois. The veterans were
flown, free of charge thanks to the Lincoln Land Honor Flights,
Inc., a national organization dedicated to getting WWII veter-
ans to the WWII Memorial.
The veterans were
greeted at the me-
morial by Senator
Bob Dole, Con-
gressman John
Shimkus, and Con-
gressman Aaron
Schock. The veter-
ans also toured the
Korean War Memo-
rial, the Vietnam
Wall, and a bus
tour of the Wash-
ington D.C. area.
During the travels
in Washington D.C . Area, the veterans were often greeted
with standing ovations and cheers from citizens at the airports
and at the memorials. On the plane ride home the veterans
received a “mail call” that consisted of letters from family
members thanking them for their dedicated service to their
country. “It was an emotional experience”, according to Gary
Leming, an Ashland resident who served as a volunteer
guardian for the two area veterans. Bill Quinley, a former Ash-
land resident, who now resides in Springfield,, and Dick
Dickerson of Ashland, also made the tour.
