Discussion
Discuss Proverbs 3:5. “Trust in the Lord w
ith all your heart and lean not on your ow
n understanding.”
Your heart is not a trustworthy m
oral compass. Read the follow
ing verses and sum
marize w
hat we learn about the heart.

Matthew
15:19 ________________________________________
Your heart does not need to be followed but led. Jesus said in Luke
12:34, “For where your treasure is, there your heart w
ill be also.” How
do w
e keep the heart from becom
ing a compass, instead of seeing
the heart as it is - a thermom
eter? What does this verse tell us about
using the heart for a guide?
Read the following verses and sum
marize how
the heart is to be led.

Discuss how
Paul was able to have a clean conscience w
hile persecuting the church? (A
cts 22-23) What does that tell us about letting the
heart/conscience be our guide?
If we are not to “go w
ith your gut” as the saying goes, is there a time to
“listen to your conscience?” If so, when?
Can you think of a tim
e when you w
ish you had not followed your
heart? Or a tim
e when you look back w
ith thanksgiving that you didn’t? Is it som
ething you can share with your group?
How
would you counsel a friend w
ho asked for advice about a decision? Th
ey want to follow
their heart, but it seems obvious to
everyone else that is the wrong decision/direction.
If you were follow
ing your heart instead of following Jesus, how
would
you want your good friend to tell you?
Explain in your own w
ords what it m
eans to follow Jesus w
ith all your heart?
