AzerbaijanBaku

Once a booming oil town in a former Soviet republic, Baku is an intriguing blend of historic structures, modern glass towers and Soviet-era apartment blocks. A city of contrasts, black cabs imported from London traverse streets lined with designer boutiques adjacent to 15th-century architecture.

A maze of narrow streets and ancient buildings, tour Baku’s Walled City, which dates back to the sixth century B.C. and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. See Shirvanshah’s Palace, the magnificently carved stone complex that was the last residence of the rulers of the powerful Shirvan State. Take in stunning views of the pathways and minarets from the top of the iconic Maiden Tower, built in the 12th century and the focus of much folklore. Opt for a day trip to the Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape, also known as Gobustan National Park. Another UNESCO World Heritage site, this area of plateaus and rocky boulders is home to more than 6,000 rock engravings spanning 40,000 years of rock art, ancient cave settlements and burial grounds.

AccommodationsOn the waterfront promenade, Four Seasons Hotel Baku features spacious rooms with balconies that open to views of the Caspian Sea or the Walled City. Guests can unwind at the penthouse spa or with a swim in the indoor pool set in a sky-lit, two-story atrium.

UzbekistanSamarkand

An outpost of the fabled Silk Road and considered the “crossroads of world cultures,” the city of Samarkand prospered in the 14th and 15th centuries under the rule of Timur, who oversaw the city’s most significant development.

Stroll through Registan Square and its assembly of buildings with exquisitely decorated mosques, madrassas and minarets in vibrant blue tiles. Step inside the sparkling Gur-Emir mausoleum, the tomb of Timur, crowned with an azure-tiled dome. Explore the sacred Shakhi-Zinda complex and see the turquoise domes of the majestic Bibi-Khanym Mosque, once one of the Islamic world’s largest. Among the fluted domes and giant monuments to Timur, browse the city’s lively bazaars filled with stalls of dried fruits and nuts, colorful fabrics and freshly baked bread. The round, distinctly decorated bread, called obi non, is baked in clay furnaces.

AccommodationsConveniently located in the city center, Registan Plaza Hotel Samarkand is adjacent to the business district and historical Old Town. All rooms are comfortably furnished and equipped with modern amenities.

NepalKathmandu

Spend two nights in Kathmandu, the once forbidden city tucked in a Himalayan valley that melds Buddhist and Hindu influences. See Nepal’s largest stupa and one of the most important holy sites for Buddhists in the country, Bodnath, with its immense white dome and five Buddhas, representing the five elements of earth, water, fire, air and ether, at its main points. Visit Swayambhunath, a remarkable stupa encircled by dozens of smaller stupas, shrines and fluttering prayer flags. Explore medieval Bhaktapur to find extraordinary Nepali architecture and art, including the ornate Golden Gate, a centuries-old masterpiece of metalworking.

Alternate: Instead of staying in Kathmandu, opt to enjoy a rejuvenating visit to Dwarika’s Resort Dhulikhel, a holistic lifestyle retreat drawing on ancient Himalayan knowledge. Here you can pamper yourself at the spa, participate in one of the many daily yoga sessions with a master instructor, enjoy a cooking class, or take a gentle hike and explore the beauty of the Himalayan foothills. Meals are prepared with fresh seasonal and local produce from the resort’s organic farm and the area’s farmers.

AccommodationsTaking its inspiration from the Kathmandu Valley’s rich cultural heritage, the centrally located Dwarika’s Hotel Kathmandu is architecturally modeled after the palaces of the Newar Kings.

Alternate: Relax and recharge at Dwarika’s Resort Dhulikhel, set on over 20 acres of hillside overlooking the Himalayan range. One of the resort’s key features is the Pancha Kosha Himalayan Spa situated halfway up the hill in a lush forest setting.

TibetLhasa

This morning we take a charter flight to the Sacred Buddhist city of Lhasa, Tibet’s capital located on one of the world’s highest plateaus. Visit the lavishly ornamented Potala Palace, once the winter residence of the Dalai Lama that also served as the seat of the Tibetan government. Witness the monks as they go about their daily rituals at the nearly 600-year-old Sera Monastery. Take in Jokhang Temple, the region’s oldest and most revered temple.

Alternate: Instead of traveling to Lhasa, choose to travel by local air to Nepal’s Chitwan National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and one of the last remaining havens for the elusive Bengal tiger. Ride Asian elephants through the jungle in search of one-horned rhinos, gray langurs and sloth bears.

AccommodationsThe St. Regis Lhasa Resort in Tibet offers excellent service and serenity after a day of exploration with such amenities as its sparkling Golden Energy Pool, Iridium Spa and Meditation Garden. The spacious guest rooms feature custom-designed furnishings and beautiful views of Lhasa.

Alternate: Located on the border of Chitwan National Park, Kasara Jungle Resort is a tranquil respite that blends the surrounding nature with simple luxury. Modern guest rooms feature water garden courtyards and hotel amenities include a pool, spa and restaurant serving locally sourced Nepali cuisine.

LaosLuang Prabang

Surrounded by jungle-covered mountains where the Mekong and Nam Khan Rivers meet, life in Laos unfolds at an unhurried pace. Temples sit next to elegant French colonial architecture in the old town. With more than 30 temples, it is no wonder that UNESCO deemed this ancient city a World Heritage site.

To better understand Laotian culture, opt for a sunrise excursion to see the morning almsgiving, a sacred ceremony where locals offer sticky rice to monks. Delve deeper into regal history at the Royal Palace where the lavish Throne Room plays second fiddle to the sacred Pha Bang, the golden Buddha less than three feet tall, a gift to the city that is recognized as the official introduction of Buddhism to Laos for which the city derives its name. Opt to meet local craftswomen at the Living Crafts Centre Ock Pop Tok, a social enterprise dedicated to preserving fine textiles, handicrafts and ethnic design. Or float down the Mekong River on motorized long boats and view daily life along the shore.

AccommodationsIn Luang Prabang, we split between the following hotels:

Central to the Luang Prabang peninsula, Amantaka provides easy access to many historic sights, including the former Royal Palace. In addition to its comfortably furnished rooms and suites, this large garden estate features a spa, pool and art gallery displaying works from local artists.

La Résidence Phou Vao sits atop seven acres of lush gardens. Guest rooms include large windows that open to stunning views and first-class amenities. The resort also features a UNESCO heritage garden and infinity plunge pool.

MyanmarBagan, Inle Lake and YangonOnce the historic overland trade route between India and China, Myanmar (formerly known as Burma) is emerging from decades of political and economic isolation. This land of ancient Buddhist temples remains largely unspoiled by the modern world.

On arrival in Yangon, take a local charter flight to the ancient city of Bagan. Home to more than 2,000 temples scattered over 26 square miles, Bagan was once a thriving capital and the heart of Buddhism in the region. The collective scope of the temples makes it one of the top archaeological treasures in Asia rivaling Angkor Wat. The next day board a local charter flight to Inle Lake where daily life unfolds among stilted houses and floating markets set over tranquil waters. Watch skilled locals guide rowboats with a single leg on the oar as they tend the lake’s floating gardens. We return to Yangon for our final night and visit the over 300-foot-tall Shwedagon Pagoda, the shimmering golden temple that dominates the capital’s skyline.

AccommodationsSet within the Bagan Archaeological Preservation Zone among the ancient temples of the Kingdom of Bagan, the Aureum Palace Bagan is a spacious 27-acre resort that features villas and rooms furnished with unique crafts.

Aureum Palace Inle is on the edge of tranquil Inle Lake, a series of expansive waterways. Uniquely designed rooms line the shore and feature lounge areas and lotus ponds.

Sule Shangri-La, Yangon is a contemporary property known for traditional hospitality. Rooms include views of the Yangon River and nearby pagodas.

IndiaTaj Mahal and Udaipur

No visit to India is complete without seeing the Taj Mahal, the white marble mausoleum that took over 22 years, 20,000 people and 1,000 elephants to construct. Witness the interplay of light and shadow on the walls and surrounding reflecting pools, and observe its intricate mosaics created with precious stones.

After our day stop, we reboard our private jet to Rajasthan, a region of opulence that is known as the “land of kings.” Perhaps no place better exemplifies this title as Udaipur, a city rich in royal rivalry, set on the banks of Lake Pichola and home to revered temples and marble palaces. Discover the City Palace, a complex comprised of 11 smaller structures filled with courtyards and hanging gardens. Visit the Fateh Prakash Palace, a luxury hotel that houses the Crystal Gallery. Venture into the Rajasthani countryside to Ranakpur Temple, one of the five holiest Jain sites in the world. Or choose a horseback ride through the Aravalli Range, exploring small villages and ending with a lakeside alfresco lunch.

AccommodationsBuilt to emulate a traditional Indian palace, the Oberoi Udaivilas is grandeur at its finest. Rajasthan’s rich heritage and style is present in the hotel’s courtyards, fountains and gardens.

JordanLost City of Petra and Wadi RumHalf-built, half-carved into rose-red cliffs by the mysterious Nabataean people more than 2,000 years ago, Petra was once a rich, sprawling metropolis of lush gardens, fountains and villas. Imagine this long-forgotten era as you walk through the Siq, a narrow chasm in the bedrock, and emerge before the elaborate Treasury. Explore the intricate buildings and tombs, and observe up close the superb blending of Eastern traditions with Hellenistic architecture.

Alternate: Or opt to see the ancient site of Jerash and the Dead Sea. Known as the “Pompeii of the East” because it was preserved under blankets of desert sands, explore Jerash’s theaters, temples and stone roads once traveled by chariots. Then go to the lowest spot on the face of the earth, the Dead Sea, and float in this mineral-rich body of water.

AccommodationsWith its close proximity to the sights, the Mövenpick Petra smoothly blends Middle Eastern craftsmanship with modern conveniences.

Alternate: Kempinski Hotel Ishtar Dead Sea is situated on the edge of the Dead Sea amid gardens dotted with lagoons, waterfalls and nine amazing swimming pools boasting views of the sea.

Neither TCS, nor the Sponsor, nor any of its respective owners, directors, employees, contractors, officers or agents (collectively, the “Released Parties”) shall be held liable for (A) any damage to, or loss of, property or injury to, or death of, persons occasioned directly or indirectly by an act or omission of any other provider, including but not limited to any defect in any aircraft, watercraft, or vehicle operated or provided by such other provider, (B) any loss or damage due to delay, cancellation, or disruption in any manner caused by the laws, regulations, acts or failures to act, demands, orders, or interpositions of any government or

any subdivision or agent thereof, or by acts of God, strikes, fire, flood, war, rebellion, terrorism, insurrection, sickness, quarantine, epidemics, theft, or any other cause(s) beyond their control, and (C) any and all claims, actions, or losses for bodily injury, property damage, wrongful death, loss of services, lost profits, consequential, exemplary, indirect or punitive damages or otherwise that may arise out of or occur during your travel in connection with the Tour. The Participant waives any claim against any of the Released Parties for any such loss, damage, injury, or death, including any right to seek consequential, punitive or exemplary damages against any of the Released Parties for any reason whatsoever. None of the Released Parties shall be liable for any air carrier’s cancellation penalty incurred by the purchase of a nonrefundable ticket.

Acknowledgment of Risk: You understand and acknowledge that your travel in connection with and participation in the Tour or any activities which may take place during the Tour, may involve risk and potential exposure to injury or fatal injury and that risk and dangers may arise or be caused by the negligence or participation of other Participants, contractors and/or subcontractors for the Tour or from other foreseeable and unforeseeable causes, including weather and other acts of nature. Express Assumption of Risk & Responsibility: In recognition of the inherent risk of the travels and related activities in which you are intending to engage, you confirm that you are physically and mentally capable of participating in the Tour and that you willingly and voluntarily assume full responsibility for any injury, loss, or damage suffered by you or caused by you. By registering for the Tour, you certify that you do not have any mental, physical or other condition or disability that would create a hazard for yourself or other Participants. TCS or the Sponsor reserves the right in their sole discretion to accept, decline to accept or remove any Participant on the Tour and reserves the right, subject to the terms and conditions contained herein, to withdraw any part or all of the Tour and to make such changes as may be necessary.

Arbitration: Any controversy or claim arising out of or relating to this Agreement or the performance there under, including without limitation any claim related to bodily injury, property damage or death, shall be settled by binding arbitration in Seattle, Washington, U.S.A., in accordance with the rules of the American Arbitration Association then existing, and judgment on the arbitration award may be entered in any court having jurisdiction over the subject matter of the controversy. Such proceedings will be governed by substantive Washington law. This agreement to arbitrate does not waive or modify the liability release contained in this document.

Exclusive Governing Law & Jurisdiction: This Agreement shall be governed by the laws of the State of Washington, without regard to conflicts of laws principles. If the right to seek arbitration is for any reason waived by both parties, or if judicial review of any arbitration is sought, any action or legal proceeding arising out of this Agreement shall be brought exclusively in the courts of the State of Washington, or, if it has or can acquire jurisdiction, in the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington or the appropriate appellate courts, and the parties hereby waive any objection to venue or jurisdiction in connection therewith. In connection with any action or legal proceeding arising out of this Agreement, the parties hereby specifically and knowingly waive any rights that either party might have to demand a jury trial.
