Salt for the Week

“Lo, the day is coming, blazing like an

oven…” The message of the prophet

Malachi in the first reading should get

our attention. Are we ready for the day

of the Lord?

In a few short weeks we will again start the

season of Advent. Advent is time of preparation,

not just for Christmas, but a place in our hearts

and lives for Jesus. With that in mind, our theme

for the season will be “Ready?, READY!”

Lest the next month and a half be reduced to

cards and gifts and parties and concerts, we

focus instead on the general direction of our life.

Where do I spend the most of my time? Which

events take the most of my imagination and

energy? On what do I spend the most of my

resources? We would hope that the answers to

these questions are worthy of the call we have

received from Christ.

The end of the liturgical year is fast approaching

with the feast of Christ the King. We look into

our lives to see if Jesus really IS Lord of my life?

Am I ready?

Peace and a safe harvest—

MASS ANNOUNCEMENTS… We are making a

sincere effort to reduce the duplication of

announcements at weekend Mass. As a rule, we

only announce parish-sponsored events. The main

sources of information are posted on our website

www.vibrantcatholic.com , and in the weekly

bulletin. Please get into the habit of reading the

entire bulletin—either hard copy or online, and

please do not assume you can catch me before

Mass to get an “OK” for a “quick announcement.”

Thank you! PARISH LITURGY Coordinators for Music and Art and Environment—Please check with your parish for the Advent packet prepared by Father John. It will have great info and suggestions as you prepare your parish for the Advent season.

Our Sympathy and Prayers to~ Richard Hermsen, on the death of his

brother-in-law of Virgil Gaul, who passed away November 2, in Dubuque. Diane Keppler, Jill and Joe Weber, Cindy

and Daron Bockenstedt, Nicole and Scott Bahls, Daniel and Nancy Keppler, Mark and Betty Keppler, and Mary and Tom Weber on the death of Diane’s husband, Jill, Nicole, and Cindy’s father, and Daniel, Mark, and Mary’s brother, Robert Keppler, who passed away on November 11 in Strawberry Point.

FACT: Immigrants Pay Taxes, Immigrants contribute more in taxes than they consume in public benefits. Specifically, undocumented immigrants

contribute between $7-8 billion in social security funds annually. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) estimates that undocumented immigrants pay between $9-11 billion in withheld payroll taxes annually (Bipartisan Policy Center, 2018). Undocumented immigrants keep the Social Security system more solvent because they pay into the system but are NOT eligible to collect benefits upon retiring. By legalizing the undocumented workforce, we will bring these workers out of the shadow underground economy and increase social security and federal tax revenue. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimated that if the 2007 immigration reform bill had passed, legalizing 12 million undocumented immigrants, it would have generated $48 billion in new federal revenue through 2008-2017. The Power of Mass by Bert Ghezzi Reflections of Daily Attendees

“Mass helps me to know who I am and why I am. I feel centered. Communion fortifies and sustains me for whatever is coming in the day ahead. I have more confidence, more patience, and more concern for the people that I encounter when I go to daily Mass.” ~Mike M.~

All Emmaus Pastorate Catechists—If you were not able to make the Advent workshop Wednesday evening, November 6, make sure you get the packet of Advent materials prepared by Father John. Check with your local coordinator or call the office!

Toddler Time

St. Mark Parish Center

November 20; 9:00 a.m.

Come make a fun turkey ring

for Thanksgiving!

Are You A Snowbird? Do you leave Iowa for warmer winter weather? Contact your parish before you go— leave your forwarding address with the office; check into ACH debit to keep supporting your parish while you’re gone! Your parish will be glad to help you. You won’t have to think about your weekly donation while you are gone. Thank you for your continued support of your parish, have a safe trip, and God bless you!

Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families Parents—Use this opportunity to engage your

children with the Mass and deepen

their appreciation for the richness

of their faith life.

As the liturgical year wanes, our

readings at Mass focus on the end times. This

week, we hear Jesus predict the destruction of

the Temple of Jerusalem, an unfathomable

prospect to his listeners. Jesus warns them (and

us) that even in the face of much destruction and

evil, they should not give in to terror. We must

remain strong and steadfast, hoping in God and

working for good. Though life may seem terrible

and hopeless at times, God’s morning light will

overtake the darkness of night.

Discussion Questions

1. Have you ever been terrified? How did you

overcome the terror?

2. What does it mean to hope in God? Why is

this hope so important? Talk about how faith

helps us to respond to worries, fears, and

crises.

Pastorate Survey—Did you receive your Pastorate survey? Have you returned it yet? It’s due this Tuesday, November 19. Your feedback is important to us! Thank you!

Our goal is to help individuals in our community, and, thanks to your generous contributions, we are able to do that in a variety of ways.
