Candlelight Remembrance Service Set for November 20
Families and friends of those whose loved one has died in the past year are invited to join Hos-pice of Queen Anne’s staff and volunteers for the annual Candlelight Remembrance Service on Sunday, November 20, 5 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Parish in Centreville. This special non-denominational service allows families of hospice patients and community members to remember and celebrate the life of their loved one who has died. During the service, candles will be lit in memory of loved ones and the al-tar will be decorated with cards, each with the name of the individual being remembered. This year’s remembrance ornament features a white clay bisque angel holding a heart. Orna-ments may be purchased at the service for $16 each or two for $30. Pre-ordering ornaments is recommended as the supply may be limited. To RSVP for the service or pre-order an ornament, call Rhonda Knotts at 443-262-4109 or e-mail [email protected].

Event Planning Tip of the Week – Gift for the Party Host
get inspired
410-739-6943 • www.InspiredEventsllc.com
Brought to you by
When you attend parties this holiday season, it’s always nice to take a little something for the host. The gift doesn’t have to be expensive; it’s the thought that counts. A unique idea is to take an empty wine bottle, drill a hole through the bottom, and feed white twinkle lights in through the hole. Decorate the bottle with a custom label that’s perfect for your host and a festive ribbon to complete the look. This gift can be used as a decoration in their home all season long. For more advice, go to www.InspiredEventsllc.com or nd us on facebook.

THE GRASONVILLE SENIOR CENTER…WHERE UNIQUE OBJECTS ARE MADE (AND SO MUCH MORE)
By Ron Stafford
When you drive by the Gra-sonville Senior Center, you may think that it’s a sub-dued place where seniors sit around, sleep or watch television all day. Not so! Located in the heart of Gra-sonville, the senior center bustles with activity. Led by Senior Center Manager Ann Martin and her team consist-ing of Site Council Manager Bonnie Walter, Site Council Vice President Sandy Morse, and Treasurer (and a willing volunteer) Becky Barbee, the members of the center are in-volved in activities ranging from taking day trips, working out in the tness area, and helping with fundraising activities, including making a very unique cheese server. The cheese server started in a ceramics class where participants were learn-ing how to paint on glass bottles. From painting on bottles, the class morphed to creat-ing a unique cheese server from wine bottles that could be sold to the general public to raise funds for the Center. The wine bottles are saved from various restaurants in the area such as the Jetty and Adam’s Ribs, washed very thoroughly and then placed in a kiln after which they are molded and shaped into a great nished product. Bread and butter knives are sometimes added as a nishing touch. How much for these grand creations? Ann says, “The servers sell for $15 to $25 depending on the size.” The bread and butter knives sell for an additional $5. Ann also added, “We have sold $1100 worth of cheese servers so far, and we hope to sell $1000 more between now and Christmas.” They have become so popular in the community, that Bonnie at times was selling the servers out of the trunk of her car. She adds, “They are a hot item.” Sandy chimed in, “I hope other local restaurants will help us out in this cause. We commend the community for supporting us in this effort.” The cheese servers have become one of the most popular fundraisers at the Center, second only to the spaghetti dinners and the various trips that are offered. Ann hopes that the unique cheese servers sell out by Christmas. She and the rest of her team hope to expand the effort next year. The Grasonville Senior Center is operated by the Queen Anne’s County De-partment of Aging, and is a very busy operation. As Bonnie noted, “It’s not a nursing home…it’s a very progressive center for every level of senior.” Membership is free; those who participate in the activities must be independent and at least 60 years of age. The fundraisers support various activities including trips to such destinations as Italy, Ireland and New York City. The Center also has a computer lab and holds an annual variety show and dinner. Meetings held by the Site Council are a venue for members to share their ideas. Sandy added, “The Senior Center is a very active place. We serve approximately 50 to 100 people on a daily basis. Seniors do not have to belong to just one center. They are welcome to participate at the center on Kent Island and at the new center just built in Sudlersville. In the future, Ann and her team would like to see more seniors participat-ing in the activities. “We would like to see more people take advantage of what we can offer them,” added Bonnie. For more information on how you can get involved and how to purchase the cheese servers, visit Ann and her team at the Center located at 4082 Main Street in Grasonville. Feel free to call them at 410-827-6010 or you can email Ann directly at [email protected].

Regen Linn, professional jeweler with Kent Is-land Jewelry located in Chester, enjoys deco-rating their Christmas tree with her daughter, Jayce, who just turned 3. She truly looks for-ward to the connection made between mother and daughter during this very special time of the year. Regen and the great staff of Kent Island Jewelry thank their customers for their support recently during their Grand Re-Open-ing. Regen has been with the business for the past 18 months, but has been in the industry for the past 10 years.
Pictured here are Jeff Brozene, assistant man-ager at the Kentmorr Restaurant, and Dawn Eber, Kentmorr’s front of the house manager. Dawn says that her favorite holiday tradition is getting together and spending time with people she doesn’t see throughout the year. Jeff added that his favorite tradition during this time of the year is getting together with his family in Reading, PA the week before Christ-mas. Dawn has been with the restaurant for the past 15 years. Jeff has been with the business for the past eight years, where he started when just 16. Dave and Tammy Harper and the entire staff at the Kentmorr Restaurant look forward to a wonderful Christmas season with many more to come.

Dan Watson, general manager of 4 Sea-sons Bistro located in Chester, enjoys his tradition of getting together with family and friends. They live close by, so it’s easy to coordinate schedules, etc., to make sure that the holidays are time spent with those he loves and cherishes.

Mike Rash, a delivery driver with Carini’s Pizza, says that his favorite holiday tradi-tion is celebrating the end of another year and welcoming in a new one. Mike enjoys the new changes and possibilities that come with making a fresh start in a fresh new year. He has been with Carini’s for the past eight months, and looks forward to serving many more customers for the remainder of 2011 and into 2012.
Mary Ann Hebert, an employee with Estate Treasures in Chester, says that her favorite holi-day tradition is the celebration of Epiphany on January 6. Mary Ann grew up Italian, and cel-ebrated the journey of the Wise men to see the Christ child, commonly known as Epiphany. She has passed this celebration down to her own two boys, now grown. She has been with Estate Trea-sures for the past 10 years, and the business has been going strong for the last 20-1/2 years.

I hope you’ve taken note by now that our big push at the Shore Update is BUY LOCAL. SHOP LOCAL. GIVE LOCAL. It’s part of everything we do around here... advertising, articles, events... it permeates our every page. Aft er all, we have been a LOCAL paper for over 24 years now. When you SHOP LOCAL, remember you are supporting the busi-nesses that support you. Th ese are the businesses that give to local charities, employ your neighbors, coach Little League teams and call our commu-nity home. Next time you enter a local business, take a look around, you’re bound to see plaques from area charities, sports teams and community or-ganizations. Shopping locally not only supports our community, it is actually a pleasure:-For instance, when I stop by Centreville Liquors, not only am I greeted with a smile, but they actually remember me and what I like. -When phones were acting peculiar on a recent Tuesday when I had to place our school pizza order, Jeff , with our locally owned Dominos, saw I had tried to call and couldn’t get through. He actually called me back to fi nd out if I wanted my regular order and same delivery time. -A trip into Centreville Shipping always results in a warm greeting from owner Bill and resident bull dog Cody. No matter what I need, I always hear, “Not a problem. We’ll get it right to you.” And they do. My local shopping experiences struck me as I was reading about Small Business Saturday (SM). Small Business Saturday, the day aft er Black Friday, is a national movement to support and drive people to the local businesses that create jobs, boost the economy and preserve neighbor-hoods around the country. We knew we had to get on board with this and help area businesses promote Small Business Saturday. Watch next issue as we feature area businesses and special promotions for Small Business Saturday. Walking into a small business just feels like home. Until next time, Cheri Hoff man, Shore Update owner and team member

It’s Your Business It’s Your Business By Ron Staff ord
ADOPT-A-BEAR…DELIVERING THE MAGIC OF CHRISTMAS TO CHILDREN
During this holiday season many families are making shopping lists of what to buy their children for Christmas. Many other families nd they do not have the resources to buy gifts for their chil-
dren. Adopt-A-Bear helps to ll that void. Led this year by Jesse Parks with Stevensville-based KRM Development Corporation and Heather Tinelli, owner of Shore Accountants in Chester, the program is looking for volunteers and for donations to bring smiles to these children on Christmas morning. Adopt-A-Bear is a program that provides Christmas gifts to children in the local community. Started in 1991 when it served only 30 children, the program has grown to serve over one thousand children in Queen Anne’s and neighboring counties. Adopt-A-Bear works closely with schools, family support centers, and other organi-zations to identify children who are truly in need. In 2010, the program was in danger of collapsing due to lack of contribu-tions and lack of volunteer support. Jesse and Heather, members of the Queen Anne’s County Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals, knew that something had to be done. Both were born and raised on the Eastern Shore. Jesse has a background in commercial real estate development and Heather’s background is in accounting. The two had to make some tough decisions in order to keep the Adopt-A-Bear program alive. Heather offered, “We were challenged with the number of children in need. In order not to jeopardize the entire program, we decided to serve only Queen Anne’s County.” The Adopt-A-Bear process starts with local schools and the Head Start program refer-ring children who are in need. Information is gathered about clothing sizes and special requests and stored in a database. Volunteers then place Christmas trees decorated with Bear Tag ornaments in various businesses and organizations around the county. On the back of each ornament is the child’s name, clothing size and any special re-quests. Anyone interested can take a bear tag and then return the gift items to the original location. Jesse and Heather ask that gifts not be wrapped so the inventory can be updated. The gifts are then wrapped and delivered to agencies for nal distribu-tion. Heather says, “It’s an invisible pipeline; everything is con dential. We have no overhead, so all monies collected are used to purchase gifts and all donated gifts go directly to the child.” Adopt-A-Bear currently has 5 to 10 volunteers, but many more are needed. Who can help with this program? Heather answers, “Anyone can help, especially high school students. It’s fun for them, and it’s something that directly affects both them and those they are helping. We can use help in distributing tags and trees, col-lecting and wrapping gift packages, and nally delivering to the appropriate loca-tion.” Everyone including businesses and individuals can encourage friends, family and co-workers to Adopt-A-Bear or to make donations to help ll a child’s Christmas dream. There is something that everyone can do. Jesse says, “There are different areas
that help is needed ranging from marketing, database entry, and others.” Heather adds, “This is a great way that you help out during this holiday season.” The bear tree distribution is already un-derway. The deadline to return gifts to the tag site is December 2. Inventory is taken through December 12, at which time the gifts are wrapped and then delivered to the agencies for distribution. For more infor-mation on how you can get involved with Adopt-A-Bear, contact Jesse Parks at 410-604-2622 or Heather Tinelli at 410-604-0004. You also can visit their website at www.adopt-a-bear.net or send an email to Heather at [email protected].
Jesse Parks with Stevensville-based KRM Development Corporation and Heather Tinelli, owner of Shore Ac-countants in Chester, are spearheading Adopt-A-Bear this season.
