You make knownto me the path oflife; in your pres-ence there is full-ness of joy...-Psalm16:11

When you hearthe name Jesus, what picture do youthink of ? Googleimages of Jesus-go ahead, Ill wait...Now, let me guess:there were probablymore images of agloomy, menacingman with a sternface than of a grin-ning, laughing, cheerful personenjoying life, right? My mind immedi-ately goes to the pic-ture that hung inour familys livingroom when I was akid of a very seri-ous Jesus wholooked like his face

This week, letsmake an effort tofind a picture of aChrist who smiles,it just might changeyour approach to arelationship withhim. Look up TheAccess YouthCenter onFacebook; our pro-file pictures for thenext month mighthelp you in yourquest.

The Access YouthCenter, 74 W. CanalSt., Wabash, 260-563-2070, ChristCentered, YouthDriven, CommunityMinded.

LOL-God would crack if hesmiled. Two questions

this week: Why?and What if ? Whyare the most com-mon images ofJesus (the very onewho set the examplefor us in living ajoy-filled life) sointimidating? Andwhat if we were tochange the image inour mind to a pic-ture of Christlaughing? The Bibleteaches us thatJesus experiencedlife while on thisearth - the good andthe bad, sorrow andlaughter, lonelinessand friendship.

When yourfriends picture yourface what do youwant them to see?Do you think Jesusfeels the same aboutour image of him?

Parents of children with special needs encouraged to attend Dec. 6 eventby Danielle Smith

[email protected] Dec. 6, local sup-

and Gordon Homes, afinancial planner whospecializes in depend-ents with specialneeds, will gather atWabash Middle

School, 150 ColerainSt., Wabash, to pro-vide resources andinsight for parents ofchildren with specialneeds.

This event is gearedtoward parents ofchildren that willsoon be transitioningto adult programs, butJoyce Lee, Wabash-Miami Area Programdirector, stresses thatparents cannot beginplanning too early.

Even parents ofelementary age stu-dents with disabilitiesshould attends, Leesaid. You just cantstart early enough.

    At 6 p.m., parentswill have opportuni-ties to speak with fivesupport agencies,V o c a t i o n a lR e h a b i l i t a t i o n ,Bureau ofD e v e l o p m e n t a lDisabilities, CareyServices, Arc ofWabash County andPathfinders.

V o c a t i o n a lRehabilitation per-forms services suchas evaluations andthey provide assis-tance for young adultsto pursue education, job training or jobcoaching. The Bureauof DevelopmentalDisabilities is similar, but geared towardmore severely dis-abled individuals.

    Carey Services, Arcand Pathfinders are

all programs that helpdisabled individualsremain productivethrough workshops, volunteer work andother day programs.

Once the kidsleave high school theyneed to do somethingproductive in theirday and parents aretypically working,Lee explained.

During the timefrom 6 to 6:30 p.m.,parents will have theopportunity to speakwith these agencies, collect informationand meet people.

Were hoping thatwe can reach peopleto come and get thisinformation becausetypically they wouldhave to go from hereto there to get infor-mation and werebringing it all togeth-er in one night, Leesaid.

Also during thathalf-hour, parents willhave the opportunityto purchase gifts cre-ated by the We Canclass at HeartlandCareer Center. This isa workshop-style classfor disabled studentsin which they creategifts throughout theyear. Near Christmastime, their products

are taken into ourlocal elementaryschools, and the stu-dents there are givena chance to purchaseChristmas gifts.Revenue from thesales is used to sus-tain the We Can pro-gram.

Were featuringthat here becausewere going to have alot of parents of kidwith disabilities, some of whom haveparticipated in thisprogram and havemade the productsthat were going to bedisplaying and sell-ing, Lee said. Thereare so many thingsthat these kids can do the products theycan make it is unbe-lievable. They reallyhave a lot of skills.

At 6:30 p.m., parentswill move to thelibrary to listen to theguest speaker.

Gorodn Homes is afinancial planner outof Indianapolis whodoes this all over thestate, Lee explained. He has a particularinterest in financialplanning for parentsof children with dis-abilities because hehas a child with a dis-ability himself, so he

    has walked himselfthrough the process.

Homes will addressissues such as govern-ment benefit eligibili-ty, guardianship andconservatorship/guardian ad litem andfinancial security andfunding options.

Parents with kidswith disabilities haveto work through agen-cies to get support, and he knows theinroads who youmeet with and whenyou meet with them,Lee said.

March of Dimesrecently announceda three-yearimprovement inIndianas grade onthe annual prema-ture birth reportcard to a C gradefor 2011, which is upfrom a D in 2010and 2009, and an Fin 2008. This is good

progress, saysMarch of DimesIndiana StateDirector TanyaHand. It shows thatMarch of Dimes pub-lic health cam-paigns, programsfunded at our part-ners like MarionCounty PublicHealth Department, and volunteer out-reach is working.Smoking is linked

to both prematurebirth and low birth

weight in babies.Scheduling non-med-ically necessaryinductions and C-sections also puts ababys life and healthat risk.We are working to

help babies by fund-ing smoking cessa-tion programs forwomen, implement-ing public healtheducation cam-paigns encouragingevery woman to giveher baby 39 weeksand working withhealth care profes-sionals to help fami-lies have healthybabies. Together weare making stridesin the fight forstronger, healthierbabies.Since 2006,

Indianas pretermbirth rate hasdropped to 11.9 per-

cent from its high of13.2 percent. Alsodropping was therate of women smok-ing to 23.3 percentfrom 26.6 percent lastyear. The only back-ward motion was inthe number ofwomen uninsured inIndiana, up from2010 to 19.3 percentin 2011. Our states

preterm birth ratehas improved thisyear. Were proud ofthis achievementand what we accom-plished by workingtogether with ourpartners forstronger, healthierbabies, says MinjooMorlan, state direc-tor of program serv-ices and publicaffairs for March ofDimes. We aredetermined to con-

tinue to find andimplement solutionsto improve thehealth of babies, such as improvingaccess to health carecoverage, helpingwomen quit smok-ing, and preventingunnecessary early c-sections and induc-tions, so more babiescan get a healthystart in life. The United States

received a C on theMarch of DimesReport Card. Gradesare based on compar-ing the states andthe nations 2009 pre-liminary pretermbirth rates with thenew March of Dimes2020 goal of 9.6 per-cent of all livebirths. The U.S.preterm birth rate is12.2 percent downnearly 5 percent

from the peak of 12.8percent in 2006. The Report Card

information for theU.S. and states isavailable online at:marchofdimes.com/prematurity.Preterm birth,

birth before 37 weekscompleted gestation,is a serious healthproblem that coststhe United Statesmore than $26 billionannually, accordingto the Institute ofMedicine. It is theleading cause ofnewborn death, andbabies who survivean early birth oftenface the risk of life-time health chal-lenges, such asbreathing problems, cerebral palsy, intel-lectual disabilitiesand others. Even

babies born just afew weeks early havehigher rates of hos-pitalization and ill-ness than full-terminfants. At least 39weeks of pregnancyare critical to ababys healthbecause manyimportant organs, including the brainand lungs, are notcompletely devel-oped until then. The March of

Dimes says its 2020preterm birth goalcan be achieved by acombination ofactivities: giving allwomen of childbear-ing age access tohealth care coverage, fully implementingproven interventionsto reduce the risk ofan early birth, suchas not smoking dur-

ing pregnancy, get-ting preconceptionand early prenatalcare, progesteronetreatments forwomen who are med-ically eligible, avoid-ing multiples fromfertility treatments, avoiding medicallyunnecessary c-sec-tions and inductionsbefore 39 weeks ofpregnancy, and byfunding newresearch on preven-tion of pretermbirth.Nov. 17 is World

    P r e m a t u r i t yAwareness Day withactivities plannedacross Indiana, thenation and theworld. For moreinformation go tomarchofdimes.com.

Hospice carehelps patients andfamilies focus onliving life to itsfullest. This is themessage thatS o u t h e r n C a r eHospice is sharingwith the communi-ty during NationalHospice andPalliative CareMonth.November is a

Weve been asked.......What happens if I prefund my funeral and prices go up?Just like anything else, funeral prices will increase over time.

However, one of the most compelling reasons to prearrange with our firmis that we offer advance funeral planning options that grow over time to cover inflation.

Thats the kind of assurance you can count on from-
