Welcome to the inaugural publi-cation of Beautiful You, a spe-cial supplement of the News

Bulletin aimed at helping women lookand feel their very best.

With the Christmas season approach-ing, and the day-to-day demands on the time of mothers, professionals, students and all women, it’s importantto take time to relax and rejuvenate to keep your energy and your spirits up.

In the past, spending the day at the spa was reserved only for the wealthi-est women in society. But now those relaxation and beauty services areavailable to all on almost any budget.Niomi Pearson talks to the peoplebehind Tru Spa to reduce the mystery around spa treatments and preparenewcomers for an exciting experience.

Niomi also delves into the increas-ingly popular world of yoga and all itsforms. The ancient physical and spiri-tual practice found new fans in North America and a wide variety of yoga disciplines exist in Nanaimo to suit any mobility needs.

With so much focus on the economyand household budgets, it’s no wonder that women are opting for simple, easy to care for styles when it comes totheir hair. But simple does not mean scruffy – Jenn McGarrigle talks to styl-ists about how to stay fashionable on a budget.

And speaking of fashion ... CatwalkFashions and KC’s Boutique let Jenn inon fall’s hottest looks, many of which are inspired by the popularity of the1950s housewife (thanks Mad Men).

Our physical appearance can only do so much for our well-being – nutrition is paramount to good health. Rachel Stern looks into the popular raw fooddiet to see what it is, why people areopting for it and what qualified nutri-tionists think about this new food craze.

Spa helps rejuvenate body and soul

These days, a day at the spa can mean so much more than just a girls’ day out.

With health and wellness ben-efits seeping out of every pore, today’s spa services not only rejuvenate the soul, but the body as well.

“The spa is for everyone thesedays; it’s more catered to the person’s needs,” says KarenMurphy, owner of Pure Spa inNanaimo. “A spa isn’t just forfluff, it’s also a place to come and get well.”

The spa offers a wide variety

of treatments to the first-timeand experienced spa-goer –everything from manicures, topedicures, facials, body mas-sage, body wraps, steam treat-ments and aesthetician serviceslike waxing.

“This industry is not aboutpampering yourself as muchas it used to be, it’s becoming aneed because everybody’s livesare so busy,” said Yolanda Dela-franier, community relationsand admissions for Nanaimo’sTru Spa Institute.

◆ From /4There is no set dress code for

most spas, however you will wantto arrive at least 10 minutes early to allow time to settle in.

“That gives them a chance to get in, have a glass a water, take offtheir coat, fill out the form and forus to get to know them before we start the service,” Murphy said.

Pedicure clients will want to wear open-

toed shoes

and pants with enough give to rollup for massaging purposes.

“We want to make sure your feetare taken care of because they hold you up all day long,” Murphy said.

As an aesthetics school and spa rolled into one, Tru Spa Institute offers its clients a unique experi-ence like no other.

By providing services in a workenvironment, the students are ableto make the transition to the work-place that much easier, Delafranier said.

She added that the students spend extensive time practicing onfriends, and other classmates, andare capable of providing equal, ifnot better service than other indus-try professionals

“We want to make sure the stu-dents are giving a wonderful, relax-

ing, pampering opportunity to each client that comes in while learning, while understanding that their touch, their energy will go into the client,” Delafranier said.

Places like Tru Spa Institute and Pure Spa, located in the Coast Bas-tion hotel, are offering residents a relaxing ambient spa experience atcompetitive prices.

“They can still get the treatment of a spa, but it’s not going to hurt their pocket book,” Murphy said. “It’s something you wouldn’t do on a regular basis, you might do it once in a while to spoil yourself.”

The brilliant autumn colours in Nanaimo signal the start to the sweater and scarf season.

But this year, it also means tall boots, tights, tunics and ’50s-era dresses, said Robin Tomlinson, owner of Catwalk Fashions downtown.

“The thing that’s really big is that ’50shousewife look and I think it’s Mad Men that’s really brought that on,” she said. “It’s great on every woman.”

Dresses are now down to the knee thisyear instead of the mini skirts of thepast few years and cut to make the most of a woman’s curves, said Tomlinson.

“We’re moving into a more dress-upkind of thing,” she said. “Nanaimowomen are definitely more casual. I’malways trying to push them a little bit – why not look good every day? Why notlook your best?”

Orange, mustard yellow and turquoise are showing up in her store and so are

animal printsof all

kinds, she said.Following the ’50s theme, the waist

line of jeans is creeping back up to awoman’s belly button, skinny jeans aregetting slightly wider and vintage-stylehair pieces are also in big demand.

Tomlinson said leggings like people wore in the ’80s are still popular, but now women pair them with a tunic and highboots – a statement that’s definitely aunique product of the current era.

As for the 40-plus crowd, Karen Griffin, co-owner of KC’s Boutique in LongwoodStation, said in Nanaimo, this age groupalso goes for casual wear: a common lookis a nice pair of jeans worn with bootsand a fancy top.

“If they’re going to dress up at all here, they would wear a fancy top or a novelty top,” she said. “They would pair thatwith a basic pair of slacks or jeans with bling on them.”

Griffin is seeing a lot of chocolate browns, teals, reds and other earth tonesin her store this fall.

Capes, as well as tunics, are in stylethis year, and novelty jackets that look good over jeans.

“The fabrics now for fall – everything has stretch,” said Griffin. “It is all aboutcomfort and versatility. People want style but comfort.”

If there is truth to the saying ‘you’re only as young as you feel’,then yoga could be your key to the fountain of youth.

“Yoga is a way of understand-ing who we are, what our nature is, why we’re here, and how to stay in balance and stay healthy,” said Kavita Maharaj, owner ofRed Door Yoga on Aulds Road. “It slows down your mind, and therefore slows down the aging process.”

Although said to be approxi-mately 5,000 years old, the roots of yoga are derived from Ayruvedicmedicine and go back approxi-mately 10,000 years to the Induscivilization, said Maharaj.

In its holistic form, yoga takes

the entire energetic system andthe mind into account, rather thanthe physically-based system wesee in North America.

“Yoga is a much larger system than what you see in North Amer-ica,” Maharaj said.

According to Ayruvedic medi-cine, the universe is made up of five elements; air, ether (space),fire, water and earth. Each indi-vidual possesses different combi-nations of these elements which make up their dosha. For example, air and ether create Vata, fire andwater create Vitta, and water and earth create Kapha. Understand-ing these makeups can help usdetermine and correct imbalances in the body.

“The further away you move from that makeup, the more dis-eased you become,” Maharaj said.

There are plenty of differenttypes of yoga, such as classical Hatha, Vinyasa, Iyengar, Yin, and Kripalu yoga. Then there are yoga styles such as Bikram and Mok-sha, which may not be for every-one, Maharaj said.

“They’re like McDonald’s.Wherever you go you get the samething,” she said. “All yogas, ideally, should be based on the student in front of you, not a generalized‘let’s put some poses together’, because not all sequences and pos-tures are appropriate for all doshamake-ups and doshic imbalances.”

When it comes to hair, Nanaimowomen are opting for a vari-ety of styles and shades that

reflect the new season.Easy maintenance hair is the theme

right now, said Megan Nuñez-Delgado, owner/stylist at Serenity Salon onBowen Road.

Women are going for colour jobs that don’t need to be touched up every fourweeks, she said.

For example, one hair colouring technique that is popular right now is balayage, where colour is painted on rather than using foils to give people a sun-kissed, natural look. Another look is colouring the ends of the hair butnot the roots to create a two-toned look, called ombre.

Women are asking for long layers that don’t require a lot of product orthat don’t need to be styled every day, said Nuñez-Delgado, and the focus is on working with, rather than trying tochange, a person’s natural texture.

Warm tones are always popular in the fall, such as copper, red and mahoganyand these warmer colours serve to shine up hair dried out from a summer

in the sun, shesaid.

More and more people are alsorequesting more natural hair colouring products, such as ammonia-free prod-ucts, she added.

As for accessories, feathers that are clamped around a section of hair arebig sellers, as well as hair chalk – non-permanent colour that a person canapply themselves to get a new look for anight out – and extensions, both clip-inand bonded to the natural hair.

“Extensions are always big,” saidNuñez-Delgado.

Full-bodied hair is also popular – people are using texture products suchas surf sprays to give their hair volume without too much work – and incor-porating braids into hairstyles, sheadded.

Local celebrity hairstylist Bryan Dubinsky said his clients are going for longer, simpler hair that is easy to maintain as well.

“A lot of hair trends are dictated onwhere the economy is at,” he said.“Simple seems to be the norm.”

The look is longer and simpler withbluntly cut ends – rather than feath-ered – that grow out gracefully so that people don’t have to go to the hair-dresser as often, said Dubinsky.

Colours are also going more natural, with perhaps the odd flash of bright colour, he added.

For a bit of volume, women are going for soft curls, waves and subtle back-combing and clip-in extensions alsoadd to this look, said Dubinsky.

More people are turning to raw diets to avoid preservatives andpackaged foods.

Diana Marchand, a personal trainer and raw food chef at Rawmbas, saidmany processed foods available are full of fillers and don’t offer the nutrients and minerals that people need. Sheadded the further a person can get awayfrom packaged food the healthier their diet can get.

“When you eat food that has no nutri-ents in it your body is actually starving,”she said.

Marchand turned to a raw food dietto recover from health problems and asa cleanse for her body. Prior to eating raw food she said her diet lacked manyessential minerals and vitamins. Shewas only on a raw diet for a short time

because she wasn’t able to get all her dietary requirements by strictly sticking to a raw diet.

“For me I couldn’t get enough calo-ries,” said Marchand. “When you cookfood you can have more of it.”

Patricia Chuey, a dietitian and spokes-woman for the Dietitians of Canada, said in the long-term she doesn’t feel eating a purely raw food diet is the answer, and people shouldn’t eat raw meat, butthat for short periods of time it could be helpful for people. Variety, moderation and balance are good approaches whenchoosing what to eat, said Chuey.

“I’m a huge proponent of eating foods as close to a raw state as possible,” saidChuey.

She said that some raw foods, depend-ing where a person lives, could be harder to find or are more expensive. Somepeople also may have digestive problems and it may be difficult for them to break

down raw foods, especially as they age,and may have to slightly cook or steam them, she added.

Many raw foodies cook vegetables andfruits in a dehydrator, keeping the tem-perature low. Marchand said she cookssome foods in a dehydrator or in a mini oven because they don’t lose as manynutrients. The longer you cook food themore essential nutritional components you lose, she said.

Marchand said people don’t have to eata purely raw food to be considered a raw foodie. She said her diet is about 75 per cent raw food and probably only aboutone per cent of people are 100 per cent, and usually they are vegan as well.

Many people Marchand speaks to are turning to raw food diets because theyhave been told by their doctor or natur-opath that they have food allergies tothings such as wheat and dairy.

“I think people are getting sick and

having digestive problems,” she said.Chuey said people who want more

information about healthy eating can contact the provincial HealthLink B.C.hotline and as to speak to a registereddietitian. People can reach the hotline by dialing 8-1-1 or 1-800-667-3438. The hotline is available Monday to Thursdayfrom 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. or 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. onFridays.
