Energy Efficient Buildings:Program 1: Commercial Buildings

Task 1 - Energy Efficient Renovation Demonstration“CERT will work with one hotel and one restaurant to establish the baseline

energy use for these buildings”.*We conducted an interview with the National Weather Channel. The interview was part of a video presentation about the hotel which aired during the last week of October. Our part of the presentation was not aired because of the expanded coverage of the blizzard in New England. *Chancellor Battle was invited to speak at the LEED award ceremony. A&T faculty and students were invited to participate in the ceremony. We added State Senator Katie Dorsett to the list of special guests. Chancellor Battle acknowledged CERT’s grant from the Legislature.*We continue to monitor utility bills and the energy consumed by the chiller.**We conducted a two-week study of ventilation in the hotel.*We conducted a two-week study of energy consumption on the guest room floors.

“CERT will work with the local restaurant association to identify eight other establishments to receive an energy audit”.

*Through our work with the Proximity Hotel and Printworks Restaurant we are also able to audit the O’Henry Hotel and the Green Valley Inn. *We have contacted a Marriott Courtyard Hotel that is Energy Star rated and identified another. Our intent is to conduct audits of these facilities to make a total of eight establishments. These audits would identify building systems that are energy efficient or have the opportunity to gain efficiency. We would also identify similar operating practices. Our plan is to hire staff to conduct these audits under Dr. Rojeski’s guidance. *These audits will be conducted during the month of January. This will allow time to plan a workshop in association with the NC Restaurant and Lodging Association in the spring.*Began collecting and analyzing utility data for the O’ Henry Hotel/Green Valley Grille*Made initial contact with the only two Energy Star Hotels in NC (Marriott Hotels in Charlotte and Durham.)*Reviewed the retrofit lighting plan for the Broyhill Inn and the I.G. Greer classroom building.*Toured the Broyhill Inn and Greer Building*Installed electric sub-meters in both buildings to collect “before” data.

Program 2: Institutional BuildingsTask 1: Guilford County School energy Management Demonstration

*CERT has worked with the Guilford County Schools to establish the baseline energy use of all schools. Guilford County Schools has contracted with a consulting company (School Dude) to establish and maintain a computerized energy use database. The energy use and other bill information are being loaded onto the database. *CERT will have access to this web-based information for our use and analysis. We will begin testing the database in November.*CERT will work with the Guilford County School staff to select 5 schools to receive an energy audit. The Guilford County Schools is reluctant to implement measures that may bring publicity to this work until the new superintendent is able to announce the energy management program along with other measures as part of his new administration. We expect this to happen by January. The school staff has already committed to doing audits on all the schools after the first five are completed as a demonstration project.

Program 6: Assistance to the City of Greensboro Energy Efficiency Programs

“CERT will estimate the carbon dioxide production associated with the day-to-day activities in Greensboro”.

Page 21: November 10, 2008 Ms. Starlette Brown Program Manager State Energy Office 1830A Tillery Place Raleigh, NC 27604 Subject: Monthly Report from June 1, 2008

*CERT met with the Energy Manager for Winston-Salem to review how he completed the greenhouse gas estimate for that city. We have identified where to obtain the data to complete this estimate and have ordered the software needed to convert energy use to greenhouse gas emissions. *At this meeting which is one of the tasks for this project, representatives of the organizations in Greensboro that are doing work to promote sustainable development will present what they are doing to each other and generate a beginning list of the actions for the city government and community to adopt to increase energy efficiency, use waste resources more effectively and use renewable resources to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. *The meeting will be held November 13. The CSC will use this information to prepare a plan and recommendations for consideration by the Greensboro City Council.*The City plans to apply for funding under EPA’s Sustainable Skyline program. EPA has published a Request for Proposals that are due December 17. The planning and project work in this proposal will align with this project and we will want to use this program as match.

*CERT presented the six workshops for homebuilders on the components of the NAHB Green Building Program. These sessions have been attended by an average of 50 homebuilders, realtors, and product distributors. *We are now planning a day long workshop for builders.*CERT will document 2 homes that are being built as part of this program in order to publicize the benefits of these houses to the builder and the homebuyer.
