Novelon is a combined oral contraceptive, more well known as a ‘birth control pill’ . Novelon is used to prevent pregnancy. Novelon contains Desogestrel which may be of some benefit in androgen-related acne and skin conditions.Women taking Novelon over the long term may also experience other benefits reduction of the risk of developing cancer of the ovaries and womb.

The active pharmaceutical ingredients contained in Novelon Tablets are 0.15 mg of Desogestrel and 0.03 mg of Ethinyl Estradiol .

One tablet is to be taken daily. The tablets must be taken at about the same time every day, with some liquid as needed. Tablet taking should be continuous. One tablet of Novelon is to be taken daily for 21 consecutive days. Withdrawal bleeding should usually occur on day 2 to 3 after the last tablet is taken. Each subsequent pack is started after a 7 day tablet free interval.How to start Novelon Tablets:Taking Yasmin birth control pill has to start on day 1 of the woman's natural cycle (i.e. the first day of her menstrual bleeding).

Missed Dose:Missed One Pill:If you forget to take your tablet at the usual time, you must take it as soon as you remember. Take the next pill at your regular time. This means you may take two pills in one day. Missed Two Pills in a Row in Week One or Week Two of Your Pack: Take two pills on the day you remember and two pills the next day. Then take one pill a day until you finish the pack. You must use another birth control method for 7 days after you restart your pills.

Missed Dose:If You Miss 2 Pills In A Row In Week 3 Or Week 4 Of Your Pack: Throw out the rest of the pill pack and start a new pack that same day.

ContraindicationsNovelon Tablets are contraindicated in patients with the following conditions:

➔Hypersensitivity to Desogestrel and/or Ethinyl Estradiol, or any inactive component of this medication.➔History of or current thrombophlebitis or venous thromboembolic disorders➔Active or recent (within 1 yr) arterial thromboembolic disease e.g. stroke, MI; cerebral vascular disease, coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease with complications.

Contraindications➔Have severe hypertension ➔Diabetes Mellitus with vascular disease.➔Have headaches with focal neurological symptoms.➔Undiagnosed abnormal genital bleeding➔Known or suspected breast carcinoma, endometrial cancer, oestrogen-dependent neoplasms.➔Hepatic dysfunction or tumor➔Cholestatic jaundice of pregnancy, jaundice with prior combined hormonal contraceptive use.➔Known or suspected Pregnancy

Side Effects of Novelon Pills The possible side effects of Novelon birth control pill are given below:

Intermenstrual bleeding, post-medication amenorrhoea, changes in cervical secretion, increase in size of uterine fibromyomata, aggravation of endometriosis and certain vaginal infections. Breast tenderness, pain, enlargement or secretion.

Nausea, vomiting, cholelithiasis, cholestatic jaundice. Headache, Hypertension, migraine, mood changes, depression. Fluid retention, change in body weight, reduced glucose tolerance.

Warnings And Precautions

➔Novelon may increase risk of breast cancer, glucose intolerance and thromboembolism.➔May affect serum levels of triglyceride and lipoprotein. ➔Women who currently have or have had breast cancer should not use Novelon because breast cancer is a hormonally-sensitive tumor.➔Increased cardiovascular risk in smoking women specially those more than 35 yr.

Warnings And Precautions

➔Discontinue Novelon tablets if jaundice develops. Steroid hormones may be poorly metabolized in patients with impaired liver function. ➔Women with severe hypertension should not be started on hormonal contraceptives. An increase in blood pressure has been reported in women taking oral contraceptives➔The onset or exacerbation of migraine or development of headache with a new pattern which is recurrent, persistent, or severe requires discontinuation of oral contraceptives and evaluation of the cause.

Warnings And Precautions

➔Discontinue treatment if papilledema or retinal vascular lesions are observed on eye examination. ➔An increased risk of thromboembolic and thrombotic disease associated with the use of oral contraceptives is well established.

Overdose Symptoms

There have been no reports of serious ill effects from Novelon contraceptive pill overdose. Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, and withdrawal bleeding may occur in females.
