Though the cliché repeated for millennia states that all roads lead to Rome, it's not uncommon for travelers to come to the outdoor museum not knowing where to head when faced with so many possible itineraries. The original Rome tour, which features the Colosseum and monuments in honor of political leaders? Or the Christian Rome tour, with the Vatican and its churches? Or perhaps the Rome of the arts, beautified by da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael and Bernini?
Take it from us: start at the beginning. In the middle of the capital of 21st century Italy, preserved remains underground or on the surface hark back to the foundation of Ancient Rome, in 753 B.C., and retell the story of the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 A.D. In four days, you can go back in time and experience these 12 centuries, when Rome commanded the world with its ferocious gladiators, pharaonic construction projects, battles and megalomaniacal emperors.

WhERE ThE nAVEl Of ThE WORlD CAME AlIVE • Between the Palatine and Capitoline hills, now home to the Capitoline Museums, is a plethora of architectural rel-ics: the Roman forum, the political, religious and commer-cial center of Rome. Julius Caesar and other emperors paraded down the Via Sacra — starting with Augustus (66 B.C. – 14 A.D.), Caesar's adopted heir who ruled for 44 years. The homes of Augustus and livia, his third wife, can be visited at Palatine hill, though the frescoes from livia's residence are now housed in the Palazzo Massimo Alle Terme Museum.
In commemoration of the 2,000th anniversary of the first emperor, up until the 18th of this month, a spectacle recounts his trajectory and provides virtual reproductions of ancient buildings every night at the forum of Augustus. In addition, other structures made by the leader are scattered throughout the city: the Ara Pacis, an altar dating from 9 B.C.; the ruins of the beautiful Theatre of Marcellus, built in 11 B.C.; and the Pantheon (in the side photo), which dates from 27 B.C.
It was during Augustus's rule that Jesus Christ was born and his followers were persecuted by subsequent emperors, includ-ing the infamous nero (37 – 68 A.D.). Though the fire that laid waste to Rome in 64 A.D. is often attributed to him, re-cent studies shed doubt on this theory. nero did however order the execution of Christians accused of setting the fire. In a mad fury, he killed his mother and committed suicide.
fechadura do Priorato dei Cavalieri di Malta
In addition to its lovely overlook, the Aventine Hill holds a secret that can be discovered at night: its amazing view of the dome of st. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican through the keyhole at Priorato
dei Cavalieri di Malta
No entorno do Panteão há duas paradas saborosas: a Gelateria Giolitti, com filas para tomar o sorvete italiano, e a Enoteca il Goccetto, onde se degustam vinhos e petiscosIn the Pantheon's surroundings are two tasty locales: Gelateria Giolitti, where people stand in line to try some Italian ice cream, and enoteca il Goccetto, where you can sample wines and snacks
ThE CRADlE Of ThE SOnS Of ThE WOlf • In this trip back in time, we first embark for the Pal-atine hill, one of the seven hills in the region and the locale that Rome is believed to have been found-ed in 753 B.C. by an individual named Romulus. The legend told by the guides who work at the ruins there (located in front of the Colosseum), the tour-isty heart of the city, states that Romulus and his twin brother Remus were raised by a wolf. Still, the guides clarify that the latin word for wolf also used to mean prostitute. no matter if they were saved by an animal or a woman, the original story will for-ever be stained by the fact that, before founding the city, Romulus killed Remus.
Seven centuries went by between Romulus's leadership, the Etruscan kingdoms and the rise of Rome in the time of Julius Caesar — the dictator responsible for Rome's transition from a republic to an empire, who was stabbed to death by senators in 44 B.C. Of the earliest structures from its founda-tion in the 8th century B.C., Palatine hill is home to some original walls, the cabin where Remus and Romulus were raised and, at the foot of the hill, the grotto where the twins were said to have been nursed by the mysterious wolf.
Between the Palatine hill and the Aventine hill is another pre-imperial vestige: the Circus Maximus. Opened in the 7th century B.C., it was an arena where 250,000 spectators watched chariot races, one of the many influences of the Greeks, who dic-tated fashion and cultural trends in that era.

GuARDIAnS Of ThE unDERGROunD • A Roman postcard image par excellence, the Colosseum was christened in reference to the Colossus of Nero, a giant bronze statue, over 98 feet [30 m] tall, which nero ordered built in his own honor. It was part of the Domus Aurea, his gigantic golden house (whose interior is closed for renovations). In an at-tempt to erase the remnants of his predecessor's megalomania, Emperor Vespasian (9 – 79 A.D.) decided to build an am-phitheater for 50,000 people there. This venue for stage shows, animal sacrifices and gladiator fights was inaugurated in 80 A.D. by Titus (39 – 81 A.D.), his son and successor (the Arch of Titus, in the Roman forum, was built in his honor). Over a period of 100 days and 100 nights, 5,000 animals were slaughtered.
A favorite stop for tourists, the Colosseum is even more exciting now, ever since the hypogeum, an underground section of the arena, was opened to guided visits in 2010. There, fighters and beasts awaited slaughter. It is added to other fantastic experiences that explorers of Ancient Rome can have some 50 feet [15 m] below the ground — or deeper. near the Colosseum, you can journey below to the pagan temple in the basement of the Basilica di San Cle-mente or walk through the corridors of the Case Romane del Celio, with rooms dating from between the 2nd and 4th centuries A.D. under the Basilica Santi Giovanni e Paolo.
But no tour of the nether regions of the city by the banks of the Tiber River is more surprising than the Palazzo Valentini. Inaugurated in 2010, prescheduled multimedia excursions, which last 90 minutes, take place beneath the glass ceiling which protects ancient mansions and frescoes.

sob a superfície escondem-se templos pagãos, casas milenares e mansões com mosaicos Pagan temples, ancient houses and mansions with mosaics are hidden underground

relíquias do auge do império
RElICS fROM ThE EMPIRE'S hEyDAy • Commander of the Ro-man Empire during its golden age, Emperor Trajan (53 – 117 A.D.) set the record for attractions in the Colosseum: one of his events lasted 117 days and involved 9,000 gladiators and 10,000 ani-mals. Still, Trajan's grandeur went even further. he was the one to conquer the East and expand the limits of the empire the farthest, which during his rule stretched from modern-day England to Syr-ia, from the netherlands to north Africa. he also hired the greatest architect of the day to modernize the city.
Three of his structures remain: the forum of Trajan, inaugurated in 113 A.D.; Trajan's Column, with designs sculpted in marble which stand 100 feet [30 m] tall (where his ashes were later installed); and Trajan's Market, an enormous semicircular brick structure which was home to stores and taverns, headquarters of the Museum of Imperial forums. The task of erecting walls to shield the empire from attacks from barbar-ians — as all those who lived beyond the borders of Rome were called — fell to hadrian (76 – 138 A.D.), his adopted nephew and successor.
Today, hadrian's mark in the capital remains in the design of the Pantheon, reconstructed after being struck by lightning and a fire; in the Castel Sant'Angelo (formerly home to a mausoleum), which has a lovely view at sunset; and the Ponte Sant'Angelo, erected in 136 A.D. to cross the Tiber River. But it is in Tivoli, 18 miles [30 km] outside the city center, where his greatest work stands: the grandi-ose mansion of hadrian's Villa — where a special exhibition on the emperor is being held until november.
Para uma boa comida, faça como Michelle Obama e vá ao Ristorante San MicheleLike the castle, located on the other side of the Tiber River (or Tevere in Italian) is the Trastevere neighborhood, the region for Rome's nightlife. For some good local food, do like Michelle obama and head for Ristorante san Michele
Coube a Adriano (76 d.C.

BAThS, BIkInG AnD CATACOMBS • you need to venture out of the city center to see other wonders of the Roman Era. near the Roma Termini train station are the remains of the Baths of Diocletian, dated from 306 A.D. The biggest public bathhouse of Ancient Rome, they had a capacity for as many as 3,000 people. now transformed into part of the national Roman Museum, they were named in honor of Emperor Diocletian
(244 – 311 A.D.), who divided the Roman Empire into West and East in 285 A.D. On the side across from the Rome of the 21st century stand some even better-preserved
baths, the Baths of Caracalla, erected in 216 A.D. They're found on the way to the Via Appia Antica, the road where the catacombs of St. Sebastian and Callixtus are located.
One of the most pleasant activities in contemporary Rome is a bike ride on the charming Via Appia Antica: you'll get there in a half-hour of biking from the Arch of Constantine, in front of the Colosseum. Emperor Constantine (272 – 337 A.D.), incidentally, wraps up our journey. known for having decreed the cult of Christi-anity legal in 313 A.D., he settled in the capital of the Roman Empire in the East. While the Western Empire, headquartered in Rome, fell to barbarian invaders in 476 A.D., the Eastern — or Byzantine Empire — survived for another 1,000 years, until 1453. But this is a different chapter of history.
