Dry Gas System• 3rd Dry Gas System built for NOvA.– Leaving out a lot of the R&D/Analysis info:

Permeation models The “Rainforest” Test Material selection

NOvA APS Drier System

17

How do you know it will work?• We have done extensive FEA and CFD modeling,

calculations, research, and testing with a prototype system at NDOS and Far Detector have been running +1 year.

Dry Gas APD Routes:• Flow 0.5 SCFH through 3 rows of 32 APDs in series. – 32 per row *3 rows = 96 APDs in a row

– Flowing through 128 APDs at Far Detector with:– Inlet Dewpoint: -70oC and Outlet -48oC to -33oC– Inlet Pressure: 2 psi and Outlet 1.0 to 1.9 psi– Original dryness spec was -25oC at outlet, APDs are -15oC

Rocking Piston Compressors

• 1/3 HP• Quiet Operation• 100% Oil Free

Erik Voirin

NOvA Near Water and Dryer System 25

Air Dryers

• Pnudri Midas DAS2• Self regenerating desiccant dryers• 5 SCFM Capacity @ -40oC

• We should be able to achieve -70C dew point since we are flowing far less than 5 SCFM, and recirculating the dry air.

Erik Voirin

Gas buffer Tank and Reservoir

• Buffer Tank– 2 gal 316SS ASME pressure vessel

• Dry Air Reservoir– 30 gal 316SS ASME pressure vessel– ~5 hours of backup dry air

Erik Voirin

NOvA Near Water and Dryer System 27

Backup Nitrogen

• Airgas 5.0 Ultra High Purity Nitrogen• 99.999% pure: $75 per cylinder.• Send sample to Atlantic Analytic for analysis.

• 4 Type K Cylinders– 100-200 hours of backup time.

Carbon and Particulate Filters

• MotorGuard M-100– Removes:

• Hydrocarbon Oil Vapor • Silicone Vapor • Organic Vapor – off all types• Desiccant Dust • Volatile Organic Compounds (V.O.C.’s)

• MotorGuard M-30– 0.01 Micron Removal Rating

Control System

• Beckhoff PLC• Touchscreen on PLC enclosure (also remote control)• Readout rack protection system instruments• Readout environmental sensors• Communication with DCS system for alarms• Capability to shut off detectors LV and HV racks in

error states.• All normal auto-dialer notifications and alarms.

Safety Documentation

• Water System Piping Note:– Not needed per FESHM 5031.1: Class-D water system.

• Drier System Piping Note:– Completed and reviewed.

• Two ASME Pressure Vessel notes (Air Tanks)– Completed, need to be reviewed

• Electrical Note– To be completed after specification installation of power.
