Meet Carol Barnes

Carol Barnes has been a resident of Mesquite for 27 years. She has 4 children and 8 grandchildren. She was married to Robert Barnes until 1997

when she became a widow. Robert had worked for the City of Mesquite in the water department.

All four of her children, Steve, Bryan, Christina, and Angela attended Shands Elementary, Vanston Middle School, and then North Mesquite High School.

Carol has served on an elementary school PTA board for MISD, as a team mom for Mesquite Pee Wee Drill and Football Association and as a team manager for Mesquite Soccer Association. She also led a support group for families impacted by attention defi cit disorder (ADDA-SR) in Mesquite for 7 years.

Carol was self-employed for 20 years. She had a Registered Family Day Care in her home for 7 years and has been a medical typist for 13 years. She is currently employed as the offi ce manager at Sharing Life Community Outreach where she had previously served as a volunteer. Carol is a member of Lake Pointe church primarily attending the Town East Campus.

She absolutely loves living in Mesquite and urges people to become involved as a volunteer in this wonderful community. She particularly enjoys events at the Arts Center and Christmas in the Park at Westlake, which has become a treasured family tradition.

She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009, which was particularly stressful since having been self-employed she found herself dealing with a life-threatening illness as an uninsured person. She found much support through her church, family, friends, and especialaly through The Bridge Breast Network, and The Doris Daniely Outreach. As a breast cancer survivor, Carol strongly encourages all women to get recommended mammograms, even though they may not have insurance. She is living testimony that there are programs out there that will provide assistance and that there is hope and healing after a breast cancer diagnosis.
