As we turn the page to the final two months of 2016, I find myself re-flecting on the wide-ranging events of the year. It's been a wild ride!

Most significantly this included resolu-tion of our access request to Kirtland AFB. Colonel Froehlich, USAF Com-mander KAFB, 377 ABC/CC finalized his decision regarding our request for the sponsorship of the Coronado Thunderbirds. And our members now have access to all Moral, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) resources.

Finalizing this decision was nearly coincident when one member, Rich-ard Beegle, reached out during a Sun-day Mountain View Club brunch to the newly arriving Colonel Michael Harner, Commander, 377th Mission Support Group, who is the Military lead for MWR on KAFB.

The Mountain View Club where we meet is just one example of base access that we know about. I've been stopping by some of the MWR locations to become better informed on what this means. I expect that more will be understood as we move for-ward.

************************************************

On another positive topic, our club continues to grow in mem-bership and drives the energy that accelerates thanks to our Board members and to each individual member's hard work and dedication to increase our enjoyment and shared satisfac-tion.

One recent example occurred when we were granted the op-portunity for an information booth just outside the entrance to the 2016 Retiree Social sponsored by Sandia National Laborato-ries, held on August 23rd, at the Albuquerque Convention Cen-ter.

At the Social we observed wide interest of the retirees that vis-ited our booth to become better informed about our club. Membership Board Pete Havey, as of current news, is now helping new members to join our club and to start sharing in the fun of our activities! Another positive example for our members was the recent October presentation of “Restoration of AT&SF Engine 2926” by John Taylor, mem-ber of New Mexico Steam Locomotive & Railroad His-torical Society. In his presen-tation John reviewed "the ongoing 20+ year pirouette moving Engine 2926 from Coronado Park to the World Headquarters of the Society

and fully restoring it." The following day our members had the opportunity to tour the downtown site of the steam locomotive restoration. The steam engine is HUGE! Thank you to all who continue to make the Coronado Thunder-birds one of the finest retirees associations . . . anywhere! We always have room to improve, but . . . as the year comes to a close, we can pause to celebrate our many advances. Stay tuned for the winter schedule of events.

Until the next newsletter . . . . John P. Anthes, 2016 President

During the celebration of the 69th anniversary of the Air Force, held at MVC, Dick Beegle, Connie DeFoe, and John Anthes were joined by Col. Mike Harner

VP/Programs

George Oltman

[email protected] NOVEMBER 8th PROGRAM: "EXPLOSIVES RE-SEARCH at SANDIA NATIONAL LABORATORIES" presented by Jerry Stofleth. Jerry's presentation will focus on two activities of particular importance in current events. Have we ever wondered how the Department of Homeland Security and the Transportation Security Administration set the (rather inconvenient) 3.4 oz liquids limit for passengers boarding airplanes? The first part will focus on the 3-1-1 rule for airline travel – the secrets behind it, and the New Mexico connection. The second part will outline Sandia’s work in developing a chemical weapons destruction system for unsafe-to-handle, recovered US chemical munitions. These aging and largely forgotten weapons are a significant legacy in the US govern-ment stockpile. Also of significance are the frequently con-flicting, complicated laws regarding transportation in the indi-vidual states. Are there important international implications? Both of these activities resulted in quick response by Jerry, as well as others at Sandia Labs to provide an “overnight” solu-tion to immediate and emerging national safety concerns. It's noteworthy to recognize that both activities ultimately led to longer-term-research at Sandia National Laboratories. These development activities seek better technical solutions to emerging terrorist threats and from time-to-time serendipi-tous "lucky discovery" and mitigation of threats in our own back yard. Jerry Stofleth is a Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff at Sandia National Labs and has been working as an ex-plosives engineer there for over 30 years. He also teaches explosives engineering as an adjunct professor at New Mexi-co Institute of Mining and Technology (New Mexico Tech) in

Socorro. And just for fun in his spare time, he is a National lev-el, club volleyball coach for mid-school and high-school girls. ** There is a persistent rumor that Jerry will co-host visitor and well known explosives researcher Paul Cooper during our monthly meeting (Anthes note)

Ed. Note: Thank you, George, for great programs this year!
