The True Spirit of Thanksgiving

Historically, Thanksgiving Day began as a harvest festival to give thanks to God for providing a bountiful harvest, and also to show appreciation for fam-ily and close friends. For me the true spirit of this great American holiday is all about being thankful for all the wonderful people we have in our lives. But today our fast paced society has turned this well meaning holiday into more of a commercial event. Our stores now carry a wide array of Thanks-giving decorations so they can capital-ize on a holiday which should be about being thankful for the people that are special to us. This holiday is not about décor, it’s about surrounding yourself with the people you love and great food.

What does Thanksgiving mean to you? Is it all about the food? Or is it about getting together with the family and friends that you hold dear but may not see on a regular basis? Thanksgiving Day is an opportunity to bring together all the special people in your life whether you see them on a daily basis or not. For me, it is all about family and friends. It seems we as a society forget how impor-tant our relationships with the ones clos-est to us are, our fast paced lives leave us lacking for quality time with them. So take this opportunity to give thanks

to your loved ones, keep the true spirit of this holiday in mind this year when you sit down to Thanksgiving dinner. In my own life I have learned about the importance of Thanksgiving and the true spirit of the holiday the hard way, by loss. I have already out lived all the family I grew up with. They have all been gone for several years now, the Thanksgivings I remember as a child are just memories now. I no longer have my grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles who I grew up celebrating this

great holiday with. So for me I now truly appreciate every person in my life. I have the true spirit of Thanksgiving in my heart when I sit down to dinner with the people I care most about in my life.Don’t take your personal relation-ships with family and friends for granted. One day they will not be there and trust me, you will have re-grets if you don’t express your thank-fulness for having them in your life. With the economy being what it is these days it’s hard enough for some families to afford the traditional and expected Thanksgiving feast. Don’t fall into the commercialized version of this great holiday, make this special day about the important people you surround yourself with. Make sure they know how thank-ful you are for having them in your life. It doesn’t matter what type of food you and your family put on the table this Thanksgiving Day, it doesn’t matter what decorations you hang on your door or decorate your holiday tables with. What matters are the people with whom you choose to spend your holiday with. Make this year’s Thanksgiving Day special keep the true spirit of the holiday in your heart. Enjoy ev-ery moment because the memories of holiday gatherings last a lifetime.
