ROME – Vincent Arong of St. Francis de Sales Parish of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston was among 30 American seminarians ordained to the Order of Deacon on Oct. 8 at the Altar of the Chair in the Papal Basilica of St. Peter in the Vatican by the laying on of hands of Archbishop of St. Louis, the Most Reverend Robert J. Carlson. Originally from Cebu City, Philippines, Vincent’s parents and his 2 younger siblings moved to Hawaii, California and finally Texas in 1985. After his graduation from University of Texas, majoring in Asian Studies, Vincent taught in Japan for a year before returning to Houston to study at the University of St. Thomas. He fell in love with theology and philosophy. In 2005, Vincent entered Holy Trinity Seminary; and in the fall of 2006 he was sent to Rome for Theology Study at the Pontifical North American College. Upon his ordination to the diaconate, Deacon Vincent was

commissioned by the Church to preach the Word of God, minister at the altar and assist the bishops and priests in the pastoral care of the community. He will serve in various parishes in Rome during the weekends while finishing his seminary formation and theology study. He is scheduled to be ordained to the priesthood back in the Archdiocese this coming summer.

Andrew, 15, had an idea. The project involved the planting of (15) trees at Sacred Heart in Richmond, Texas. He solicited various tools to be donated for the work and he also received the donation of the trees from a company called Landscape Direct. Once the donations were complete, he then had a work day in which over 100 man hours were used to plant the trees and mulch various beds at the church. After the trees were planted, he sold the trees by waiting outside of the church after several masses. These trees were sold as "memorials" and he raised over $3500. Andrew wanted to do something more than plant the trees and wanted to help the church. He came up with the idea of selling the trees and raising the money that would help the

vocations office to continue their ministry of inviting young men and women to consider priesthood or religious life.

Diaconate Ordination of Vincent Arong

During my sophomore year at the University of Texas at Austin, I had an encounter with Christ that enabled me to see that the God who is Love loved me more than I could ever know. As my personal relationship with God deepened, I began to be aware of His invitation to serve Christ and the Church as a priest. This awareness grew during my years of studying and teaching in Japan, working in sales in the Philippines and in the United States, taking philosophy classes at the University of St. Tho-mas and volunteering in Bible Study and RCIA classes at St. Francis de Sales Church. Finally, after almost a decade of “thinking about it”, the events of Pope John Paul II’s passing and the election of Pope Benedict XVI gave me the courage to enter the seminary.

Everyone at the Office of Vocations would like to extend some warm

congratulations and many blessings to Deacon Vincent Arong

for his ordination to the Diaconate.

SEMINARIAN CONVOCATION Every year all the Seminarians of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston gather for a week of prayer, retreat, social, bonding, poster pictures, etc. They come from the four different seminaries where they are currently studying such as Holy Trinity Seminary in Dallas, St. Joseph Seminary in Louisiana, North American Pontifical College in Rome, Italy and St. Mary’s Seminary in Houston. During this week the new seminarians who enter for the first time get to share and bond with the old and current seminarians. One important event is when they get to meet with the Cardinal and he shares with them his gratitude for answering God’s call to serve Him and his Church.
