STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT

Jesus points out to his disciples the poor widow who has just dropped two simple copper coins into the temple treasury. He then delivers a teaching on stewardship. Despite her poverty, the poor widow in today’s Gospel does not refuse God her generosity. Out of her desper-ately impoverished life she contributes to an earthly in-s tu on to give God glory and praise. It is not the mone-tary value of the gi that was important, but the love, trust and gra tude expressed through the gi . The Gos-pel asks us similarly compelling stewardship ques ons: What do we value? In what or whom do we place our trust? How do our own contribu ons to our community of faith reflect our generosity toward God? MILITARY MINISTRY

Mission San Luis Rey Par-ish welcomes members of the military and their fami-lies. We thank you for your service to our country. The vision of the Military Ministry Team is to provide re-sources and referrals to support our military families. For more informa on, please call the parish office at (760) 757-3250 x200. Please leave your name, telephone number, best me to reach you and a short message on how we can be of service to you. Your call will be re-turned within 24 hours.

LITURGICAL COLORS

Why do the Priests wear different colors at Mass throughout the year?

The different colors signify what liturgi-cal season the church is in. There are five main colors that are symbolic of the season.

VIOLET/PURPLE symbolizes penance, prepara on and sacrifice. It is used during Advent and Lent. ROSE symbolizes an cipa on and joy. It is worn on the third Sunday of Advent (Gaudete Sunday) and fourth Sunday of Lent (Laetare Sunday) as we rejoice at the half-way point of the prepara on, and an cipate the coming joy, of Christmas or Easter. WHITE symbolizes purity, joy, light and glory. It is used during the seasons of Christmas and Easter as well as for feasts of our Lord (except those pertaining to His pas-sion), the Blessed Mother, the angels, the saints who were not martyrs and a few other feasts and solemni es. White is also used for weddings and funerals and for days special to a given parish. GOLD OR SILVER may be used in place of white. GREEN symbolizes hope and life. It is used for Ordinary Time which is the liturgical season that focuses on the 3-year period of our Lord’s public ministry, His teachings and miracles. It is a reminder that the mission of the church is to share the hope and life of Christ with the world. Green symbolizes this hope and life just as the hint of green on trees in early spring brings the hope of new life. RED is symbolic of blood, fire and passion. It is used on Palm Sunday, Good Friday and any other commemora-

on of the Precious blood. It is also worn on the feasts of martyrs and apostles (except St. John), Pentecost, and Confirma on Masses.

A QUOTE FROM POPE FRANCIS

Even if the life of a person has been a disaster, even if it is destroyed by vices, drugs, or anything else—God is in this person’s life. You can, you must try to seek God in every human life. Although the life of a person is a land full of thorns and weeds, there is always a space in which the good seed can grow. You have to trust God.― A Big Heart Open to God: A Conversa on with Pope Francis

THANK YOU! September was Stewardship Month. If you were at Mass you know we asked everyone to help out with the costs of pu ng on Mass and the other services the Parish provides by looking into their heart, re-flec ng on all the gi s God has given them and con-sidering increasing their weekly dona on to the Par-ish. As something to ponder, we suggested a weekly dona on of each individuals first hour of wages each week. We also asked that, if you weren’t already do-ing so, you consider ge ng involved in a ministry.

YOU LISTENED!YOU LISTENED!YOU LISTENED! As a result of your generosity, our combined Sep-tember & October collec ons increased by $24,000. That’s double what they increased last year!!! As you can see though, October collec ons are showing a decline from the great response we received in September. It is important we each do what we can keep the bar raised all year, especially as we go into the months ahead when our costs rise due to great-er usage during the holidays. Another wonderful re-sult is that 150 people volunteered for ministries at our Welcome Sunday ministry fair! Thanks again for all the support.

¡GRACIAS!
