shi ing shadows. He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, so we might be a kind of first-fruits of all that He created.

Dear Friends, Throughout November, most of us will be making plans for Thanksgiving. It’s a beau ful me of year which requires a lot of energy, effort, and resources to make it work as a perfect family feast. I admire Americans for giving to the world a table of gra tude. “GIVING TO HIS GLORY” I came across this quote the other day that I felt was relevant to the future of our wee church. “Some changes look nega ve on the surface but you will soon realize that space is being created in your life for something new to emerge.” A er reading these words, I immediately thought back to the ini al discussions we had about expanding our church facili es. I can only imagine there were some who viewed those “changes” as a nega ve, while others saw it as an opportunity. By now, I hope we all realize that God has been working hard...crea ng space in our church for something new to emerge!

Something New Emerging in Stewardship - What to Expect

As convener over the Stewardship Commi ee, I am truly excited to announce our STEWARDSHIP SEASON theme -

Therefore, over a six-week period beginning Nov 11 ending Dec 23 the congrega on will have an opportunity to hear from each ministry team about what they hope to accomplish for the Lord through their ministry. We will provide materials throughout the stewardship season via bulle n flyers, foyer posters, and in the December newsle er.

Calendar Highlights Nov 11 Veterans Day - Property Ministry Vision Vision Presenta on to Congrega on Nov 18 Thanksgiving - Fellowship Ministry Vision Nov 25 Thanksgiving - Outreach Ministry Vision Dec 2 Advent 1 - Discipleship Ministry Vision December Newsle er/Stewardship Season Status Update Dec 9 Advent 2 - Crea ve Expressions Vision Dec 16 Advent 3 - Stewardship Vision Dec 23 Advent 4 - Final Presenta on of our FY13 “Giving to HIS

SUNDAY NOV 11 IS VETERAN’S DAY For the first me in a while, Veteran’s Day actually falls on a Sunday, so we’ll be thanking God

for our Veterans and commemora ng those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom in the worship hour. It would be nice to have past and present photographs of our families and friends in their uniforms displayed in the narthex that Sunday morning, so if you can please bring along one and place it on the center table.

TUESDAY NOV 13 – PRESBYTERY IS COMING!

For the very first me, we will be hos ng an all day Presbytery mee ng at Erin. This is a great occasion for us and a wonderful opportunity to show our ‘connec onalism’ to the wider body of East Tennessean Presbyterians. We need all sorts of volunteers, so if you are able to give of your me in the morning or a ernoon, then please contact the church office as soon as possible. If this mee ng is successful, we hope to do this on a regular basis.

Presbytery, by the way, hold several of their team mee ngs throughout each month at Erin. We are a host church for Presbytery’s video-conferencing, as well as a regular mee ng place for Presbytery staff.

This month in Pioneer Club. . . Japan

“Land of the Rising Sun” Young Pioneers will explore the island na on of Japan, learn to write their name in Japanese, prac ce the ancient

art of origami, and learn about the sakura tree – the Cherry Blossom. We welcome guest “traveler” Heather Ritchie, who spent me abroad living in Japan.

Beginning Wednesday, November 28th, our Young Pioneers will begin a 3-part series on “Christmas Around the World.” Pioneer Club meets each Wednesday, 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm, in the Family Life Center. Contact Joy Bornhoe for more informa on.

Origami: from ori meaning “folding” and kami meaning “paper”

NOVEMBER CIRCLE MEETINGS Day Circle: will meet on MONDAY, Nov. 12th, 10 am in the church parlor

Evening Circle: will meet on Monday, Nov. 12th, 7 pm at the home of Mary Scarbrough For this month only, the Day Circle meets on Monday, not Tuesday, due to the Presbytery Mee ng at

Erin on Tuesday, November 13th. Once again, Erin PW is collec ng dona ons for the “Children’s Christmas Shop” at Sunset Gap, a shop where kids

can buy gi s for their family for 25 cents. All types of dona ons are needed: for moms - soaps/lo ons, photo frames, and jewelry; for dads - coffee mugs,

photo frames, gloves and scarves; for children - small toys, puzzles, cra supplies, and books. New or “good as new” items are accepted. A collec on box will be available in the Narthex November 11, 18, and 25.

ERIN STORIES OF FAITH The theme for the 2012-2013 Discipleship year is "Tell Your Story". We want to collect stories of faith and God's

impact on lives from members as part of the larger story of what God is doing in this me and place. Stories will be collected and published in print and, for those who consent, online.

There are many ways to tell your story of a faith experience. If you are a writer, you may write it out and drop it off in the office or submit it by email ([email protected]). If you prefer talking to wri ng, you can record your story at one of our recording sessions or fire up your web cam or home video camera and tell your story in video form. However you choose to tell it, we want to hear it.

Audio recording sessions will be held at Erin on the third Sunday of November and December beginning November 18 for those who would like to avail themselves of this service. Sign up for a 15-min me slot on the display board in the Narthex. If you are able to record audio on your own, you may also submit MP3 or WAV files to [email protected]. We will transcribe audio recordings for use in the final printed book.

Wondering what you might relate? Tell about a me when you were facing difficulty and God was there to help you through it, or a me when you felt His presence. Or you could tell how He guided you in making a hard decision. Stories like these make our faith real, and sharing them will help others strengthen their belief in a God we can depend on.

In addi on to crea ng a printed book in the summer of 2013, we will also make stories available on the Erin web site for those who give their permission. While it is likely that online readers, viewers and listeners will be other Erinites, these stories will s ll be available to all Internet users. Submission Guidelines • Printed stories should not exceed 2 pages (8.5x11). Email a achments should be plain text or Microso Word. • Audio stories should be 5-10 min long. Digital submissions in MP3 or WAV format • Video stories should not exceed 5 min. Digital submissions in MP4, MPG or MOV format.

The Nomina ng Commi ee is discerning God's call for the members who will become the Elder Class of 2015! Here you will find informa on on how the nomina on process works. The congrega on elects elders for three year terms.

Please consider nomina ng a candidate (even yourself) for elder using the nomina on form below.

All power in heaven and earth is given to Jesus Christ by Almighty God, who raised Christ from the dead and set Him above all rule and authority, all power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come. God has put all things under the Lordship of Jesus Christ and has made Christ head of the Church, which is His body.

To those called to exercise special func ons in the church — deacons, elders, and ministers of the Word and Sacrament — God gives suitable gi s for their various du es. In addi on to possessing the necessary gi s and abili es, natural and acquired, those who undertake par cular ministries should be persons of strong faith, dedicated discipleship, and love of Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. Their manner of life should be a demonstra on of the Chris an gospel in the church and in the world. They must have the approval of God’s people and the concurring judgment of a governing body of the church.

Presbyterian Book of Order

For some, the journey of a life me begins with a shoebox. Since 1993, Opera on Christmas Child has distributed over 94 million shoebox gi s to children in over 130

countries. This year, with God’s help, OCC hopes to surpass 100 million shoebox gi s! A cornerstone of the Samaritan’s Purse organiza on, Opera on Christmas Child exemplifies what it means to be a

Good Samaritan. Each year, thousands of volunteers in 11 different na ons donate gi s, wrap and pack boxes, and volunteer at distribu on centers. From start to finish, OCC partners with local churches in the U. S. and oversees to collect, ship, and handout shoebox gi s – all for the sake of the gospel.

Shoebox gi s contain basic supplies, such as soap, a washcloth, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and combs. Boxes also contain school supplies- like pens, pencils, paper, crayons, and coloring books- small toys, stuffed animals, and hard candy. For most of us, these items are readily available and inexpensive. For a child who receives a shoebox, these items are a precious gi . But, the gi of a life me is hearing the message of God’s love and salva on!

With each shoebox, children receive a color-illustrated storybook featuring Bible stories and scripture from crea on to Jesus’ birth and resurrec on. In some countries, OCC partners with local churches to offer a 12-lesson discipleship program, The Greatest Journey. This program introduces children to Jesus, shows them how to receive and follow Him, and equips them to share their faith with family and friends. Children who complete the study receive a personalized cer ficate and a special New Testament with favorite Old Testament passages. Through this program, millions of children and their families have come to receive Christ as their Savior.

This year, YOU can give a child the gi of a life me. Par cipate in Opera on Christmas Child by dona ng shoebox items, packing a box, or with a monetary dona on. Monies will be used to help cover the cost of shipping the boxes, which is $7 per box.

“What a joy to be used by our Lord to touch the life of a child thousands of miles away!”

Barb, a volunteer from Pennsylvania

“The most important thing is that I know Jesus is God and He loves me.”

13-year-old girl, Eastern Europe

A young Mongolian girl, Ankhtuya, clutched a picture. It was a color illustration of Jesus holding out His arms to comfort a child. “The girl looks like me,” she

exclaimed, pointing to the similar black hair and rosy cheeks. “When I see this picture, I feel like Jesus is hugging me. I am going to keep this forever.”
