theatre is complete! Black, cream and green glass tiles the marquee at dusk.
The new marquee sign and facade were custom designed to replicate the original theatre. New carpet and the relocation of the ticket booth are also in line with the 1930s structure.
Going to the Grand is an event, an occasion, where manners are remembered, people wait patiently in line, property is respected and conversation and pleasantries are exchanged. There is a sense of community pride and ownership that brings joy to all who enter, whether as a moviegoer, concert attendee or event participant.
The interior of the theatre remains in its immaculate original condition, welcoming moviegoers for the past 75 years. It’s now primed to do the same for the next 75 years.

Lincoln Highway Scenic & Historic Byway
Celebrate the historic Lincoln Highway’s Centennial in 2013! York City to San Francisco, cuts directly through Grand Island’s historic downtown. Known across Nebraska as US Highway 30, it rolls almost 3,400 miles coast to coast.
Often referred to as America’s Main Street, the Lincoln Highway York to San Francisco, making travel accessible to and through 12 states and connecting all the towns large and small in between.
In 1915 the Lincoln Highway was mapped yet not fully paved, sections of dirt, sand and even pasture served as the Lincoln Highway; marked only by post, poles and even hand written signs, it was a momentous and monumental undertaking original red, white and blue cement Lincoln Highway markers still remain.
What we take for granted today was indeed a bold and innovative plan for the early 20th Century. And once the idea of traveling independently, in your own motorcar at your own leisure, became a reality there was no holding America back. The appeal and freedom of the open road was intoxicating and "system the Lincoln Highway was indeed America’s very busy Main Street, and right at the center of it all was Nebraska.

Seedling Mile
Just east of downtown Grand Island is the only remaining section of a paved Seedling Mile in the United States. Seedling Miles were sections of the Lincoln Highway poured by the cities the highway was planned to go through.
Nearby, the Kensinger Filling Station has been open since 1933, and the quaint Shady Bend Cabin Camp. Shady Bend was known for its swimming pool, tennis courts and a roaming herd of buffalo. It’s Mediterrannean architecture was inspired by a trip to Arizona.
The Shady Bend building recently reopened as an Italian restaurant. It’s still owned by the same family who built the camp in 1929. The owners plan to sell some of the same kinds -

Wings Over the Prairie, excerptIt’s been called ‘The Great American Desert,’ with a less-than-subtle note of derision. But the comment betrays a lack of subtlety on the part of the commentators, because while the mountains may shout and the seacoasts roar, the prairie whispers. Clearly, south central Nebraska is part of the private collection of a superior artist, the images saved for the cognoscenti with the more-developed level of consciousness, those prepared to see beyond the featured lots in the catalog.
. . . Amazing. There just ain’t nothin’ plane about the plains. Which brings me to the cranes.
even goofy as they pick about the cornrows, their round, grey bodies bobbing about atop black-stick legs, their heron-like necks darting toward the ground, intent upon fattening up for the journey to Canada, Alaska and as far away as Siberia. Their concentration is interrupted periodically by a bouncy, wing-spreading dance. But the perception of awkwardness disappeared when I saw them, an hour before sunset, in V formations breaking off into strings of black pearl against a reddening sky, winter-bare trees studies in black in the distance, cornrows accented in snow running to the edges of my vision. Now they seemed like musical notes across a heavenly staff.
Such is our Nebraska in the spring.

Spring Migration
The #1 place in the world for birdwatchers according to Forbes FYI, and for good reason! More than 450,000 Sandhill Cranes descend on the region every Spring, the largest congregation of cranes anywhere on the planet. Along with the cranes come millions of ducks, geese and shorebirds, and the region becomes a birders’ paradise.
Whooping Crane makes regular stops in the area. Even if you’re not fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of a whooper, the early to mid-April timeframe is the peak of the booming season of the Greater Prairie Chicken, one of the most entertaining bird shows on Earth with dances that inspired Native Americans. .

It’s just like “when I was your age” come to life.
Prasied as “The best living history museum of the west” (True West) and “one of the top ten places to re-live America’s past” (Good Housekeeping), Stuhr Museum tells the story of how plains.
Poofy dresses and overalls? You bet! In period costume, residents of Railroad Town bring 1890s history to life. Watch the blacksmith shape horseshoes, catch the scent of freshly cut wood from the planing mill or see hats being fashioned at the millinery for the next gala. Play an old-fashioned game in the street. Tour historical homes including the cottage where Henry Fonda was born.
Grind your own corn just down the road from Railroad Town in a turn of the century farm. Get hitched to your honey in a charming rural church. Log cabins and a Pawnee Earth Lodge provide hands-on experiences of life on the prairie.
Architect Edward Durell-Stone designed the Stuhr Building which features period exhibits and art shows. Other museum collections include Native American and old west artifacts in the Fonner Rotunda and a collection of Antique farm machinery and automobiles.

Just west of Grand Island, you can see the remnants of an actual wagon trail. The 2.4 acre site has never been plowed, and you’ll see some of the only remaining ruts or swales on the Mormon Trail.
Upon leaving the Wood River Crossing, wagon trains were funneled onto a narrow ridge, creating the wide and shallow swale which remains today. The name of the site comes from Alda Road and Guenther Road, in between US Highway 30 and Exit 305 along Interstate 80.
