    EUROPEAN MASTERS IN LONDON

    London Christies announce an exquisite selection of19th Century European Artby the masters of thecategory to be offered at auction in London on 21 November. The sale is led by an elegant Boldini, andincludes a strong Spanish selection featuring works by Sorolla, Romero de Torres, Anglada Camarasaand Rico. Over 70 paintings are offered in the sale, also including classic French and German works witha select group of Orientalist lots, for a total estimate in excess of 5 million.

    The Portrait of Ena Wertheimer, 1902 (estimate: 500,000-800,000 illustrated above left ) byGiovanni

    Boldini (1842-1931) is a signature piece of Belle poque swagger portraiture which has not been seenon the art market for generations. The high society sitter, Ena Wertheimer, who became a painter in theBloomsbury Circle, exudes the luxury and elegance of the elite of the time. Other Italian highlights ofthe sale comprise charming scenes of family life in the countryside such as First steps (estimate:40,000-60,000) by Giovanni Battista Torriglia (1857-1937), Affetto Fraterno, circa1900 (estimate: 50,000-70,000) byGaetano Chierici (1838-1920) and a vibrant post-apocalyptic scene titledAfter the Flood: Theexit of animals from the Ark, 1867(estimate: 150,000-200,000) byFilippo Palizzi (1818-1899). Of theremarkable early modern Spanish paintings in the sale, a brilliant landscape byHermenegildo AngladaCamarasa (1872-1959) stands out as both decorative and poetic: The mountains above Pollensa, Majorca,

    1953 (estimate:120,000-180,000illustratedabove right). Also notable are the powerful and realist Portraitof a young girl, possibly the artists niece, with her favourite doll, 1902 (estimate: 250,000-350,000) byJoaqun

    Sorolla y Bastida (1863-1923) and the exuberant Majas on the balcony, circa1855 (estimate: 50,000-70,000) byEugenioLucas (1817-1870).

    19th century French masters are enjoying a resurgence in demand and this sale displays major works ofthe period ranging from still lifes to religious themes by Moreau, Courbet, Dor and Daubigny, led by anethereal landscape byJean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (1796-1875), Souvenir dItalie, paysanne ramassant dubois, circa1870,estimated at 200,000-300,000 (illustrated above right). A group of artists of the era wereobserving society through their art such as the lavish and romantic scene La proposition by FrdricSoulacroix (1858-1933), estimated at 30,000-50,000, and Jean Brauds (1849-1936) Au caf, 1909,

    showing a darker side of Paris, fuelled by absinthe and gambling (estimate: 50,000-70,000).

    A significant group of five works from a European Collection, by German artist Franz Von Stuck(1863-1928) is also offered at auction. It consists of bronze sculptures of horses and centaurs, chalkdrawings of the artists own daughters and a mythological painting depicting a nymph being charmed bya young man playing a pipe, titled Liebesfrhling, 1917 (estimate: 150,000-250,000). Another prominentGerman work is the vividMarket in Lower Egypt, byLeopold Carl Mller (1834-1892), a leading painterof the German Orientalist movement (estimate: 400,000-600,000 - illustrated above left). Along with theMller, Arab Fantasia, 1866 (estimate: 400,000-600,000) by Mariano Fortuny Marsal (1838-1874),

    once part of the sublime William H.Vanderbilt collection, is a further highlight of the Orientalist section.
