What is Noun?A word that stands for some thing, person, place or an idea is called Noun.

It can be a name of a person like (Amna, Ali, Saima etc)

A job title ) doctor, engineer(

It can be a name of a thing like

( radio, computer, desk, tower etc)

Name of a quality

( courage, bravery, sympathy, etc)

Name of an action

( laughter, sleep, work etc)

Some nouns only function as NOUNS

For example ,

desk, computer, etc

Some nouns function as NOUN & VERB

For example ,

water, work, face, etc

Some Nouns function as NOUNS & Adjective

Cold, hot, Mild etc

How to Distinguish NOUN from VERB?

When the stress falls on the first syllable then the word is a noun

water

When second syllable is stressed then the word is verb

Water

Many Verbs & Nouns have same spellings

For example ,

Answer, Change, Dream, End, Hope, Offer, Trouble etc

Compound Nouns A noun that is made up of TWO or THREE parts or more is called Compound Noun For example ,

Classroom, washroom, son-in-law, drawing room

Single Word Compound Nouns

Many nouns are made up of two words clearly but they are no longer thought as compound Nouns such nouns are called single word compound nouns .For example ,

cupboard, raincoat, seaside, typewriter

Nouns formed with Adjective + Noun

Nouns made up of adjective and nouns are called Adjective nouns .

For example ,

greenhouse, heavyweight, longhand, redhead

A heavyweight ) = a boxer(

A heavy weight )= a weight that is heavy(

Nouns formed with Gerund + Noun

For example ,

drinking water, a frying pan ,

walking stick

Dancing Master = )a master who teaches dancing (

Master Dancing = )a master who is dancing (

Nouns formed with Noun + Gerund

Horse riding )= the action of riding horse(

Sight seeing )= the action of seeing sight(

Sunbathing ) = the action of bathing in the sun(

These compound nouns are the combination of VERBS & Adverb Participles

For example ,

breakdown, income, make up

Compound Noun in Place of Phrases with “ Of ”

When we want to say that one ) non-living( thing is a part of another, we can use

“Of”For example ,

a car key )= a key of car(

Door knob )= a knob of door(

Compound Nouns referring to place

In such compound nouns the first word refers to a place and the second word to something that is in that place .For example ,

the bank safe ,

A personal computer

A kitchen sink

Compound Nouns referring to streets & Road

Compound nouns of streets or Roads are not hyphenated

For example ,

“ Oxford Street”, “ Multan airport”

“ Multan Stadium”, “ Multan Fort ”

Such compound nouns describe that the second item is designed to contain the

first one .

For example ,

Compound Nouns referring to Time

These nouns relate specifically to the time at which an activity takes place or to its duration .For example ,

Sunday lunch, Two hour walk ,

Evening dress, Night nurse

Compound Nouns formed with “Self”, “Man”, “Woman”, Person”

Compound nouns with “self” have stress on the second part of the word

For example ,

“ Self control”, “Self respect”, “ Self denial”

Compound nouns with “man” have stress on the first word

For example ,

“ airman”, “cameraman” “ man eater ”

Some people replace man by “Person” when the reference is to either sexes
