What is Noun?A word that stands for some thing, person, place or an idea is called Noun.

It can be a name of a person like (Amna, Ali, Saima etc)

A job title ) doctor, engineer(

It can be a name of a thing like

( radio, computer, desk, tower etc)

Name of a quality

( courage, bravery, sympathy, etc)

Name of an action

( laughter, sleep, work etc)

Some nouns only function as NOUNS

For example ,

desk, computer, etc

Some nouns function as NOUN & VERB

For example ,

water, work, face, etc

Some Nouns function as NOUNS & Adjective

Cold, hot, Mild etc

How to Distinguish NOUN from VERB?

When the stress falls on the first syllable then the word is a noun

water

When second syllable is stressed then the word is verb

Water

Answer, Change, Dream, End, Hope, Offer, Trouble etc

Compound Nouns A noun that is made up of TWO or THREE parts or more is called Compound Noun For example ,

Single Word Compound Nouns

Many nouns are made up of two words clearly but they are no longer thought as compound Nouns such nouns are called single word compound nouns .For example ,

cupboard, raincoat, seaside, typewriter

Nouns made up of adjective and nouns are called Adjective nouns .

For example ,

greenhouse, heavyweight, longhand, redhead

Nouns formed with Gerund + Noun

For example ,

These compound nouns are the combination of VERBS & Adverb Participles

For example ,

Compound Noun in Place of Phrases with “ Of ”

When we want to say that one ) non-living( thing is a part of another, we can use

“Of”For example ,

a car key )= a key of car(

In such compound nouns the first word refers to a place and the second word to something that is in that place .For example ,

Compound nouns with “self” have stress on the second part of the word
