(EXTERIOR CLADDINGS)MATERIALS RESPONDS TO THE SITE (INTERIOR FINISHES)

As you make youR way down to the lower levels, the construction

and the materials turns more robust.

TOP FLOOR - GALLERIES LIGHT, BRIGHT - INSTALLED WITH SKYLGIHTS,

WHITE, TIMBER FLOORING AND SMOOTH FINISHING

LOWER PART - ROUGH, DARK AND ROBUST, GIVES IMPRESSION OF A

STORAGE SPACE. THE ARCHITECTS WANTED TO GIVE THE FEELING OF THE ROOM BEING

EXCAVATED deep into the sandstone cliFF.

THE BILLOWING PROFILE NOT ONLY CON-TRASTS WITH THE CONCAVE SHAPE OF THE PRECAST CONCRETE PANELS BELOW, IT ALSO SERVES TO STIFFEN THE VERY THIN & TALL SHEETS OF ALUMINIUM.

GREEN PRECAST CONCRETEWITH LACE PATTERNS[CONCAVE]

THIS PROFILE ALSO HELPS WITH THE PROTEC-TION OF THE CASTED SURFACE SINCE THE PATTERNS CURVE INWARDS. SHADOW MAKES THE PATTERN STAND OUT MORE WHEN LIGHT IS SHONE AT AN ANGLE

PRECAST CONCRETELACE-ORNAMENTS FACADE

The design is based on a sample of Victorian lace found in a TIme capsule from 1847, unearthed when a new supermarket was being built in Nottingham. The pattern was given to SPECIALISTS, who then used digital imaging and laser technology to capture and replicate the exact pattern in 3 dimensional form. This technical approach was used to produce a master mould. The mould was then sent to Germany, where rubber mould supplier Reckli was able to transfer the design onto a durable rubber mat. The mat was then used by Trent Concrete in Nottingham during the casting process.

HOW CONSTRUCTION ANDUSE OF MATERIALS AFFECT SPACE MAKINGThe galleries are defined by thin, non load bearing walls, and are connected by large glazed openings that afford views across the width and length of the floor and which lend flexibility to how this suite of rooms can be used.

Steel roof construction allows numerous skylights to be installed and thus create such open and bright gallery spaces.

The 1.5 metre depth of the concrete beams that span the space accommodate a fully flexible theatrical rig.
