WELCOME

Welcome to the Cathedral Church of St Barnabas, the seat of the Bishop of Nottingham and the

mother church for Roman Catholics living in the Diocese of Nottingham. The Cathedral was

designed and built under renowned architect A.W.N. Pugin and the foundation stone was laid by

Bishop Nicholas Wiseman in 1842, who had brought with him the relics of St Barnabas from Rome.

This year we celebrate the 175th Anniversary of the opening of the Cathedral in 1844, which, at that

time, was the largest Catholic church to have been built in England since the Reformation.

The Cathedral remains today an active, holy and beautiful house of prayer and worship. The

Cathedral is open daily 7am – 7pm and the community’s life built around and toward the

sacraments. The Sacrifice of the Mass takes place more than twenty times each week at the

Cathedral and the Divine Office is recited daily, in which the laity are encouraged to participate. For

Choral services at Nottingham Cathedral are led by the Cathedral Choir, Choral Scholars, Youth

Choir and Parish Singers. The NCM Charitable Trust was set up in 2018 to promote and advance

music and music education at or in connection with the Cathedral and works with other music

organisations across the city to carry out its work. For more information about all our musical
