On Saturday the festival begin to live with the Top steel pan players competition in Hyde Park

On Bank holiday MondayThe main parade take place, this day is for adults.

Streets are full of colourful costumes with mass players dance behind their decorated float in the parade.

Hearing steel drum bands and music from static sound systems.

People dancing in the streets all is fun, sound, rhythm and colour

Vibrant Steel pan Bands on floats playing calypso or socaThere are also reggate, hip hop, samba, salsa....

Pans are musical instrument from Trinidad and Tobago made with 55 gallons drums of oil.

Carnival History

The Caribbean people had his first carnival in 1833 in Trinidad to celebrate that slavery was abolished.

After World War II and during the 1950s people from Caribbean came to Great Britain to work. They took his traditions

Origin of Notting Hill Carnival

In 1958 there was violence between white people and black people in the Notting Hill area in west of London.

The Carnival began in January 1959 in St Pancras Town Hall as a response to the depressing state of race relations at the time.

The Carnival took place in different parts of west London but since 1964 it took place always in Notting Hill Gate.

Influences and problems Since 1973 the carnival had a big

influence by Trinidadian Carnival. During some years there was a lot of

riots and this event would be banned.

Prince Charles was one of the few who supported the event.

In recent years, the event has been much freer from serious trouble

Five key components

Calypso (ABC) political commentary set to music originating from Trinidad

Soca (CMA): a fusion of soul music and calypso

Static Sound Systems (BASS): originally from Jamaica and most often playing reggae music

Masquerade (NHMBA): mass bands, or costumed processions and floats

Steelpan (BAS): a traditional Trinidadian Instrument.
