Message from Thomas Piro, Seminarian Dear Parishioner, After six months of being active in the parish, it is time for me to return to my seminary studies and priestly formation. I’ll be going into my senior year of the college seminary. After I complete this year, I will be halfway through my entire seminary career! I will certainly miss being around Fr. Wallace, Fr. Steve, and Fr. Alvaro and would like to thank them for being my “formators” during the spring semester. I will also miss seeing everyone at Fox Park on Sundays, daily Mass during the week, and reading the comments on the livestream! I was recently informed that Seton Hall finalized the COVID-19 procedures for returning to cam-pus. After reading through the letter, I know that this upcoming semester will be a bit of a rollercoaster; Plexiglass around the tables, two daily Masses in the seminary, no music or organist, and limited possibilities for fraternity. I’m sure many other institutions will have changes such as this, and none of us are thrilled about them, though they are necessary for the good of others. I’m sure once we read some of these restrictions, we fall into despair. We automatically think this will be the new “normal.” I even had someone ask me if “this (social distancing, masks, virtual communities, etc.) will be our new lifestyle forever.” I think the Canaanite woman in today’s gospel sets an example for us when we fall into these times of hopelessness. The woman, who was a Gentile, asked our Blessed Lord to heal her daughter from a demon. Nothing unusual in this Gospel account. Jesus has cast out many demons in the Gospels. Jesus, however, refused to answer her first and second requests. Did this stop the woman? No! She continued to persevere in prayer.

By calling him “Lord,” she expressed full awareness of his divine power. She even paid him “homage,” which means she most likely bowed down at his feet. She was authentic in her belief that Jesus is the Son of God.

The Canaanite woman never fell into despair and held onto her faith. Once her daughter was

possessed by a demon, did she say, “this is the new normal for my daughter?” No, she ran out of her na-tive land to find Christ so that he may heal her daughter. She then begged him repetitively to heal her, to which Jesus responds, “O woman great is your faith. Let it be done for you as you wish.”

To avoid thinking the COVID restrictions are going to be the new normal forever, let us turn off

the news for a few minutes and turn to prayer. And let us not make our prayers empty words, but true prayer in which we pay our homage to Jesus and repetitively ask him to help those who are sick, those who are struggling financially, and those who are in search of a cure.

God bless, Thomas Piro

We are called to be good Stewards by using those gifts to do the work that He has planned for each of us. If we deny our gifts or fail to use them as God calls us to use them, then some part of His work will be left undone.

Parish Information

Holy Hour of Intercession The Youth and Young Adults Office at the Diocese of Camden requested that parishes come together in Intercessory Prayers for our youth. With so many daily distractions and temptations negatively affecting the mind, body, soul and spirit of our young people, it is im-portant that we pray for healthy interactions and correct moral values in their lives. We are therefore providing time each month when parishioners can come together to pray for all children and young adults, as well as all the intentions they hold in their hearts. Our next holy hour will be determined at a later date

(the third Monday of the month), at 9:00 AM at Kelly Hall

Cremation and Proper Handling of Cremated Remain

Your Choices Don’t Stop With Cremation

Sadly, some of us have experienced the death of a loved one during this COVID-19 pandemic. Many have chosen to have their loved one’s remains cremated, whether by choice or necessity. Keep in mind, the Church’s teaching recommends cremated remains be given the same respect and reverence as the full body, as cremated remains are the body of the de-ceased in a changed form and should be given the same re-spect. Cremated remains should be buried or inurned on sacred grounds. With the pandemic affecting so many, you may not have been able to bury your loved one’s remains. It’s never too late to bury cremated remains. The staff at South Jersey Catholic Cemeteries is here to help and guide you. When choosing cremation, there are many choices available

including: Ground Burial * Granite or Glass Niches* Crypts * Addition

to Family Lot or Crypt * Cremation Garden

Visit SouthJerseyCatholicCemeteries.org to learn more or call us at 855-MyPrePlan (855-697-7375) and a member of

our staff will gladly assist you.

“And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself,

so that where I am you also may be.” John 14:3

Diocesan News

Please know you can easily find Diocesan audio Podcasts and YouTube resources from local Catholic experts, produced by the Office of Com-munications with the Catholic Star Herald, to share with others at talking.catholicstarherald.org/

In today’s Gospel the Canaanite woman demanded

that Jesus heal her daughter. Gather for family prayer and invite each person to offer a prayer of petition, silently or aloud, for any member of the family.

Spend time as a family writing letters to Jesus. The

letter may be as simple as completing the following: Dear Jesus, the one thing that I most want you to do for me is... Let the young children in the family dictate their letters to an older family member. Place the letters in a prayer space and talk about the need to persevere in prayer and never lose hope.

The Canaanite woman confronted the evils of discrimi-

nation in today’s Gospel. As a family, explore the topic of discrimination. Watch the evening news together. After the news, discuss the stories of discrimination in the newscast and what can be done about these situations. Talk about how faith plays a role in dealing with the evils of discrimina-tion.

Have you ever noticed another man on the altar who dresses in vestments, but not priest vestments and does some of the things a priest normally would do, like read the Gospel? This person is known as a deacon. A deacon is an ordained clergy member whose function is to assist the priest at Mass and in the parish. He may be recognized at Mass by wearing a stole over his left shoulder or by a dalmatic (the colored vestment resembles that of a priest except it has sleeves). Deacons are men who are ordained as a sacramental sign to the Church and to the world of Christ, who came ‘to serve and not to be served’. There are two types: transitional deacons, those who will be ordained priests (Paul Abbruscato & Carlo Santa Teresa) and permanent deacons, those who will remain deacons. Permanent deacons have no intention or desire to become priests. Deacons may witness marriages, perform baptisms, visit the sick, and preside over funerals. They may also help in the parish with marriage prep and religious education programs. Deacons, however, can not consecrate the Eucharist or hear confessions. They can not administer the sacraments of Confirmation or Anointing of the Sick. The title deacon comes from the Greek word “diakonos” meaning servant or minister. During the Mass, the dea-con serves at the altar with the priest and helps him by preaching the Gospel. Deacons are permitted to give hom-ilies as well. During the Liturgy of the Eucharist, he also helps distribute Holy Communion.

For additional information or if you think the Lord is calling you to the diaconate, please contact Deacon Nick Danze at 609-522-2709*222
