3.- DLNA And Fixed-Mobile Convergence

A few years ago, there were so many acronyms associated with home networking that it could cause one's eyes to cross, trying to sort it all out. There still are quite a few acronyms, but the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) has risen to top of mind. The organization says it has certified more than 9,000 devices to date. Even Tony Werner, Comcast's executive vice president/CTO, mentioned it in a blog post in January after the 2011 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES).

"DLNA marches on with more and more devices connecting and discovering content easily over home networks," wrote Werner. "Additionally, home networking continues to improve both in wired and unwired. MoCA 2.0, Powerline, Wi-Fi and wireless HDMI all continue to improve and reduce in cost."The DLNA aims to promote wired and wireless interoperable networking of consumer electronic (CE) devices. As a CE communications standard, DLNA represents content negotiation and sharing between disparate networked devices. DLNA sits above other networking technologies and allows the user to discover the devices that have media content.

Page 2: Noticias TIC mar2011

fam’s teleco news (12ªEd-Marzo-2011.) 2/9DLNA-certified devices include TVs, PCs, set-tops, routers, game consoles, tablets, Blu-ray and DVD players, smartphones and audio receivers. According to ABI Research data, more than 440 million DLNA-certified devices had been installed in users’ homes by the end of 2010. At CES, DLNA increased its buzz by unveiling a software-certification program and a protected-streaming-certification program.Currently, the DLNA is certifying software that is sold directly to consumers through retailers, Websites and mobile-application stores. With DLNA-certified software, consumers can upgrade products from within their home networks that may not be DLNA-certified and bring them into their personal DLNA ecosystems.Consumer Convenience

"Typically, when we talk about software certification, we're talking about the function that enables the sending or receiving device to do the DLNA functionality," says Bob Brummer, vice chairman of the DLNA’s board of directors. "It helps the consumer to play one file to another device."Adds ABI practice director Jason Blackwell, “ABI Research believes the DLNA’s software-certification program is a significant step that will provide a powerful stimulus to the adoption and connection of devices in consumers’ home networks. By vouching for the interoperability of devices using certified software, the DLNA will foster confidence among consumers that if they purchase certified hardware and software, their systems will work as advertised.”In addition, the DLNA's new protected-streaming-certification program leverages securely shared commercial movies between products in a consumer's home network. The program helps to preserve the rights and interests of copyright owners and content providers, and it has been recognized as an international standard by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), an organization that prepares and publishes international standards for all electrical, electronic and related technologies."If the content is flagged to be protected, cable operators offer in-home networking," says Brummer. "But let's say you only have one cable box. It (the DLNA's protected streaming) would allow you to stream to a second device in the home that wasn't hooked up to a second cable box. The guidelines facilitate that use case."Need A Friend? But no matter how useful DLNA is, it still needs to be user-friendly for consumers to connect their devices with DLNA software. Brummer says that while his own mother has a brand-name TV with DLNA built in, her mobile phone doesn't have DLNA, and she would like to be able to send pictures from her phone to the TV. DLNA-certified software could do that for her. But is it easy to do? "Sometimes you need a friend to help set things up," says Brummer. While the DLNA continues its efforts to make fixed-mobile convergence easier for the end user, at least it can celebrate its success with providers and CE manufacturers. Anna Enerio, marketing director at the DLNA, says the type of questions she was getting at the DLNA booth at CES 2011 were very different than in previous years: In the past, people wanted to know what DLNA did. This year, they wanted to know how they could become a memberDe: CT Reports

4.- Perspective on MPLS-TP and Thoughts on LTE

Page 3: Noticias TIC mar2011

fam’s teleco news (12ªEd-Marzo-2011.) 3/9by Nir Halachmi, Product Line Manager

Nir Halachmi has returned after back-to-back participation at two very important Carrier shows in Europe – the MPLS & Ethernet World Congress and the Mobile World Congress.  He’s presented us with some of his thoughts on up and coming technology from each of these shows. MPLS & Ethernet World Congress was all about MPLS-TP this year.

MPLS-TP (Transport Profile) is a specific type of MPLS targeted to be used in the transport networks designed to be more cost-effective than VPLS and IP-MPLS. MPLS-TP has omitted the use of the MPLS signaling protocols and is counting on a manual configuration of the LSPs or use of centralized management system. In addition to that the MPLS-TP is taking a different approach to accomplish signaling standards by the using standards-based OAM tools to create a protocol that resembles SONET/SDH OAM. MPLS-TP is being standardized by the IETF with support from the ITU-T. The ITU-T passed recommendation last week to use Y.1731 for OAM, and the debate about the final standard continues.Telco Systems participated in the EANTC testing of MPLS-TP at MPLS & Ethernet World Congress with our T-Metro 7224 device that served as an MPLS-PE connected to an MPLS-TP supporting device.  While we showed that service continuity was possible, it was evident that there are still many issues which need to be finalized in order for MPLS-TP to be adopted. We also concluded that MPLS-TP will require that a large amount of the network intelligence pass through the management system in order to make it a practical solution.  Another very hot topic in both shows was the mobile backhaul revolution. The mobile data surge, together with the LTE and LTE-Advance standards, represent many changes both in technology and in the business models and opportunities for operators and providers in this domain. The need for higher bandwidth is driving mobile providers to look for solution that will allow them to support it. Femto and pico cells are smaller base stations that have been designed to support smaller areas. They allow the mobile operator to offload the larger cell traffic and offer higher bandwidth in small location typically with higher population density. As the price of femto and pico cells drops, mobile operators will deploy increasingly more of these smaller base stations to accommodate high density user areas such as shopping malls, convention centers and transportation centers. This means that the cost center of the mobile operator network will shift to mobile backhaul.   This will require that the mobile operator lease more and more services from the wholesale providers who already have a footprint in the service area, clearly creating a huge opportunity for utilities, wholesale providers and even the incumbent fixed broadband operators to provide the infrastructure that mobile operators will require for mobile backhaul. But these opportunities come with additional requirements like time synchronization , CES, OAM, and tight QoS support. We have seen that 1588v2 is gaining momentum, yet SyncE is becoming more common, thus confirming our belief that the mobile backhaul network will be a hybrid time synchronization technology network. The increasing demand for bandwidth combined with new mobile equipment like smartphone, tablets, laptops etc. is creating new challenges for mobile operators.  That’s why we are targeting our solutions to address not only the bandwidth and synchronization demands but also provide the ability for operators to optimize their existing infrastructure in order to minimize both CAPEX and OPEX.DE: Telco Systems.

12.- MPLS-TP: The facts With ITU’s recent announcement on an OAM standard for MPLS in transport networks generating claims from the Internet Society that it will jeopardize the Internet, counter claims and much press coverage it seems the right time to set the record straight. The technology at the heart of the debate is operations and management (OAM) for Transport MPLS. MPLS-TP refers to an adaptation of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)'s MPLS protocol for telecom networks. MPLS can carry packets of different types, allowing telecom operators to offer private connections as well as IP services.ITU-T Study Group 15 working on MPLS-TP voted 25, February 2011, to proceed with its own OAM solution, rather than only working with the IETF on the development its preferred OAM solution. This step was taken since, despite the agreement between the two organizations to work together, the OAM solution being developed by the IETF does not satisfy the requirements of some members of the ITU.The text below charts a history of the work T-MPLS/MPLS-TP work in ITU to address a management protocol for telecom-operator networks and seeks to explain the divergence.DE: ITU Latest News Texto completo: http://www.itu.int/ITU-T/newslog/MPLSTP+The+Facts.aspx
