Notice of Race 2010 North American Championship

for the International 505 Class Chicago, Illinois, USA – June 23-27, 2010

Organizing Authority and Host Club: Chicago Yacht Club

1. Rules 1. The Regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules

of Sailing. 2. All competitors are required to wear adequate personal buoyancy having a

minimum of 4.5kg flotation for each competitor and shall be worn while racing.

2. Advertising Competing boats may be required to display advertising of the Event Sponsors.

3. Eligibility and Entry 1. The championship is open to all boats of the International 505 Class. 2. The championship entry fee shall be paid in full in accordance with

section 4. 3. Each competitor in each boat shall satisfy the requirements of ISAF

regulation 19 and be a member of the International 505 Class Yacht Racing Association. This is achieved through membership of their respective national 505 Class Association.

4. Eligible boats may enter by completing the online entry form located at http://505na2010chicago.blogspot.com or by completing the attached form.

5. Each participating boat shall successfully complete the Equipment Inspection process.

4. Fees 1. Entry Fee is $275 US Dollars if received prior to May 30th, 2010 and $375

US Dollars if received after May 30th, 2010. This fee includes entry to the North American Championship, entry to all social events, and regatta souvenirs.

2. For teams with both members under 25 at the time of the championship, the Entry Fee is $175 US Dollars if received prior to May 30th 2010 and $275 US Dollars if received after May 30th, 2010.

and will be available on-site during registration. 2. Basic schedule:

June 23rd: Measurement & Opening Ceremonies June 24th: Skippers’ meeting, practice start 10 AM, Race 1 to follow June 25th: Racing continues, 10 AM first warning June 26th: Racing continues, 10 AM first warning

June 27th: Racing concludes, 10 AM first warning, awards will follow the end of racing

6. Registration and Measurement 1. Competitors shall register prior to Equipment Inspection. 2. Registration for the championship will take place at the Chicago Yacht

Club Belmont Station on Wednesday June 23rd from 0900 – 1500. 3. Measurement and equipment inspection will take place at the Chicago

Yacht Club Belmont Station on Wednesday June 23rd 0900 – 1700. 4. Each boat shall produce a valid measurement certificate. 5. Sails (max two suits) will be measured to ensure compliance with class

rules. 6. Dry yachts will be weighed to ensure compliance with class rules. 7. One boom, mast, centerboard, and rudder may be presented for

measurement. 8. Spot checks may be made on any yacht selected at random by the race

committee at any time during the event. Such spot checks may include hull weight, equipment checks, sails, or spar measurements.

7. Sailing Instructions Sailing instructions will be posted on the event website and shall be available at registration June 23rd, 2010.

8. Venue 1. Regatta Harbor: Chicago Yacht Club – Belmont Station, 300 W Belmont

Ave., Chicago, IL 60657. 2. Racing Area: Lake Michigan, east of Belmont Harbor.

9. Courses 1. The courses will be defined in the Sailing Instructions. 2. Gate starts will be used except in extreme circumstances.

10. Scoring 1. The Low Point scoring system, Appendix A of the RRS will apply. 2. A minimum of one race shall be completed to constitute the North

American Championship. 3. When fewer than 6 races have been completed, a boat's series score will

be the total of all her race scores. If 6 or more races have been completed, a boat’s score will be the total of her race scores less her worst score. This changes RRS A2.

11. Support and Jury Boats 1. Competitor’s support boats are permitted only by prior arrangement with

the organizing authority. Support boats shall declare the sail numbers of each competitor they are supporting. Please contact the organizing authority to organize permission in advance.

2. Permitted support boats shall fly a flag assigned by the organizing authority.

3. Support boats shall remain 200 yards outside the Race Area from the Preparatory Signal of a race to when the last boat finishes that race or

when the race is postponed or when the race is abandoned. Race Area is defined as: the square with its diagonal corners at the starting committee boat position/leeward mark and the finishing committee boat position /windward mark; however and whenever these may be repositioned during the race. The penalty for infringement will be defined in the Sailing Instructions.

12. Berthing 1. Each boat shall be kept in its assigned space in the boat park according to

its tally number. 2. Equipment shall be kept with the boat in the assigned place. 3. While a boat is afloat, its launching trolley shall be returned to the

assigned place. This requirement is part of the tally system. 13. Radio Communication

A boat shall neither make radio transmissions while racing nor receive radio communications not available to all boats. This restriction also applies to mobile telephones.

14. Prizes 1. Prizes will be awarded to the top five teams overall at the North American

Championship. 2. Perpetual awards will also be awarded in accordance with 505 class rules

and traditions. 3. Prizes will be awarded to the top team with both members under 25 as

well as to the top female sailor. 15. Disclaimer of Liability

Competitors participate in the regatta entirely at their own risk. See RRS 4, Decision to Race. The Organizing Authority and all parties involved in the regatta organization will not accept any liability for material damage or personal injury or death sustained in conjunction with or prior to, during, or after the regatta.

16. Insurance Each participating boat shall be insured with valid third party liability insurance with a minimum cover of $500,000 per event or the equivalent and shall furnish proof of insurance at the time of registration.

17. Accommodations and Miscellaneous 1. Please see the event website, http://505na2010chicago.blogspot.com for

more information on housing and hotels. Summer is tourist season in Chicago and hotel rates may rise.

2. Every effort will be made to billet as many interested parties as possible. Housing with Chicago Yacht Club members will be provided on a first contact, first serve basis. Please contact Craig Thompson with housing requests.

3. There will be Wednesday night racing at the club on June 23rd, please respect the members’ use of the facility.

4. Chicago Yacht Club’s Sailing School will be in session Wednesday the 23rd – Friday the 25th. The juniors will be eating their lunch inside the main club barge and will be using the classroom space on the first floor of the junior activities barge. Event participants will have priority use of launching facilities on these days.

5. The one-design fleet review will be on Saturday the 26th, this may require some modification to the day’s schedule. Any change in the schedule and time of racing will be posted in accordance with the Sailing Instructions.

6. Lake Michigan’s water can still be cool in late June; please be prepared for water in the low 60s Fahrenheit.
