Abstract Study of literature and of specimens, mainly in the collection of the Zoelogical
Museum of Amsterdam (ZMA), lead to the fo11owing conclusions and alterations. The correct
name of Pachfiopta nqptunzas from N. E. Sumatra is Pachliopta neptunus sthorangitana (Tsu-kada&Nish{yama, 1980) because Il neptunus sumatrana Hagen is suppressed as invalid byhomonymy. Since Graphium milon (C. & R. Felder, 1864) is a nornen nudum the corrbct name
for this species becomes Graphium anthedon (C. & R. Felder, 1864). A review ofthe species isgiven. The suggestion is made to treat Graphium monticolum Fruhstorfer as a distinct speciesfor Nature Conservation reasons and its uncertain gtatus, Pcrpillo dletnoleus Linnaeus is `success-
fu11y' introduced in Java and two specirnens of Graphium weiskei Ribbe are found on Java,Rembang. The female of G"aphium encelades (Boisduval) is figured fpr the first time. And
finally Papieio polytes aipheios Jordan appears to be synonymous to Papillo alphenor perversusRothschild, whose range extends from N. Sulawesi, Minahasa to the Talaud lslands. Papitfo
polytes aicinclor OberthUr also occurs {n N. Sulawesi and maybe in Sangihe.

Introduction
New findings from old and new collections and the renewed study ofliterature on this subjectlead to sQme corrections and supplementary alterations of our knowledge of the species
concerned.
PZvchlibpta neptunus sthorangitana (Tsukada&Nishiyama, 1980), comb. noy.
Losaria neptunzLs sthorangitana Tsukada & Nishiyama, 1980, in Tsukada, E. (Ed.), ButteijZies South East
Asian tslands 1: 259, pl. 52, figs 3-4.PapiiZo neptunus var. sumatrana Hagen, 1894, DL enn Z Irts 7: 21 (nec Hagen, 1894).
In 1894, Hagen described in his article three PapiTlo taxa under the name sumauana : Papillohewrtsonil' var. sumauana (p.20), PopiVlo neptunus var. sumauana (p.21) and Papillocloanthus var. sumanana (p. 28), These names were al1 proposed as varieties with the same
concept as subspecies in the modern sense and there is ne precedence among them Qther thanorder in appearance, Only of Papillo cloanthus surnatrana, Bridges (1988) mentioned that
it is a "homonyrn
in need of a replacement." Papillib hewitsonii var. sumauana is currentlyknown as a synonym ef Papido sinten' pemses Niceville, 1894 since Rothschild (1895), and I
think that a precedence should be given te either of the other two. Popdllo cloanthtns yar.
sumatrana is nowadays known as Graphium sumatranum (e. g Hancock, 1983) and Popilloneptunus var. sumatrana turns out to have ajunior synonym discussed below. In theinterests of nomenclatural stability, I think it better te give special precedence to Papi?lo

cloanthus var. sumanana as an act of the first reviser (Recomrnendation 24A of Article 24of the Code), because in the reverse case a new name is needed for the fbrmer and a new
synonym appears in the latter. Then, PapiXlo neptunus var. sumatrana Hagen becomesinyalid as a junior primary homonym,
Papifib neptunus var. sumanana is finally known us Rachfibpta (:Lasaria) neptuntns
sumatrana, but there is a misunderstanding about the type locality of Papido neptunus var.
sumatrana. Hagen (1894) mentioned that his specimens came from "die Vorberge Delis"
(=the fbothills near Deli) in N. E. Sumatra, Bryk (1930) mentioned S. O. Sumatra (S, O,=SUd Ost== South East) in which he is fbllowed by Schrdder (1976) and Tsukada& Nishiyama
(1980), who described Lasanilri noptunus sthorangttana from Bandar Baru between Brastagiand Medan in N. Sumatra. The type locality is situated in the same area as Hagen'sVorberge Delis, and the description by Hagen (1894) matches the description of Tsukada&
Nishiyama (1980), So, Ptipillo neptunus yar. sumatrana Hagen and Lasan'a neptuntAs
sthorangttana Tsukada&Nishiyama concern the same taxon, Of these names, sumanana
becomes invalid by homonymy as above, and the current combination fbr this taxon is
Pachiiopta (Lasaria) neptunus sthorangitana (Tsukada&Nishiyama), comb. noy.
thaphiam sumatranum (Hagen, 1894)
Papilio cloanthus var. sumatrana Hagen, 1894, Dt ent ZL I)'is 7: 28.Graphiutn sumatranum : Hancock, I983,
PapiXlo cloanthus var. sumanana, a Grcrphium of the satlpedon group, is raised by Hancock
(l983) to a specific level. As mentioned above, Papi/lo cloanthus var. sumatruna Hagenshould be considered te have precedence over the two other sumauana proposed in the samearticle,
thaphium anthedon (C. & R, Felder), stat. noy.
Based on sympatric occurrence Murayama (1978) pointed out that (]raphium mtibn (C. & R,
Felder) is a distinct species and treated montilrotum (Fruhstorfer, 1896) as a subspecies of (1sailoedbn (Linnaeus, 1758). On the same ground Manin (1915) already treated G milon and
G monticolam as two species, but he never received recognition perhaps because he did notindicate a relation with the species Gl sarpedon (Linnaeus), Hancock (1983) saw milon as
a subspecies of G sarpedon and treated monticolam as the distinct species. With Tsukada &Nishiyama (1980), I agree with the two species : G, saipedon and a mdon. But because ofthe uncertain status of monticolam I think that it is best to treat Gl montiboinm also as a
distinct species. As a species this peculiar taxon cannot be overlooked in terms of NatureConservation.
Tsukada & Nishiyama ( 1980) have given a shert review of the subspecies of Graphium mdon
(C.&R. Felder, 1864), with which ] do agree, but milon C. &R. Felder, 1864 is a nomen
nudum as Bryk (1930) had already stated. The oldest valid name fbr this taxon is Tnilbn C, &R, Felder, 1865. In the current definition. of the species, mdon C.&R, Felder, 1865,anthedon C. & R. Felder, 1864, sulaense Lathy, 1899, dodingense Rothschild, 1896, cntdumRothschild, 1898 and halesus Fruhstorfer, 1907 are subspecies ofthe same species, fbr whichthe valid name therefbre becomes anthedon C.&R, Felder, 1864. Below I summarize thesubspecific combinations of this species with their ranges.

thaphium weiskei Ribbe, 1900 found in Java
From a Dutch tourist who collected a few butterfiies I obtained ,two males of Graphiumweiskei which were fbund on alewer hill at Rembang (E. Java) on 5. Xl. 1990. Isuppose
that these are incidentally introduced specimens, or perhaps there is a butterfly farm in theneighbourhood.
The female of thmphium encelades (Boisduyal, 1836)
Studied material. 1 \, N. Celebes, Botaang Mongondou, 1920, ex coll. v. d. Bergh, coll.ZMA,
Several authors (Rothschild, 1895; Jordan, 1909; Martin, 1915; Haugum, et al,, 1980;
Tsukada&Nishiyama, 1980; D'Abrer4 1982) mentioned that the female of Graphiumencelades (Boisduval) is unknown, The female rernained unknown until Detani (1983) and
no figure has yet been published. Martin (1915) suggests that the fernale diflers only slightly
from the male. Detani (1983) reports that his very damaged specimens (2 din and 10 9 fromBenta, Peleng I,) are indistinguishable from the males of Sulawesi. The female in thecol]ection of the Zoological Museum of Amsterdam (Fig, 1) is indeed very like the males.
The brown colour extends along the veins inwards more so than in the males,
Manin (I915) remarks that he could not see any resemblance to poisonous models of Emploeaor other Danaidae, but Detani (1983) writes:"At first glance they resemble the femaleEuploea conj7gurata, but if they avoid being netted, their flight characteristics return to thatof the 6raphium, and they fly off displaying great agility." I only know EuploeaconLfigurata (Felder) from the figure by D'Abrera (1982, p.221 as Euplbea euctemon
Hewitson) butIcan imagine that Detani (1983) is right, Superficially they are alike, and
because oftheir similar flight behaviour it will be diMcult to see the difference in their ownhabitat.
Ilapilib tlemoleus Linnaeus, 1758 on Java
Kato (1989) mentioned the first recent Papillo demoletLs Linnaeus, 1758 from Java, the fifthspecimen after the earlier records (Moonen, 1991). Therefbre it was a surprise fbr me to see
one R demoleus on the wing in Jakarta, Gondangdia, on l5. VII. I996, I also found therea Papillo caterpillar on a little (]7tnts tree in the garden of the guesthouse, where we stayed.
From the phote I could identify it as a caterpillar ofR demoleus but with no other reference
than the plates ofIgarashi (1979, pl. 121). So,Iam not very sure about the determinatien,Later, on 24. VII. 1996, I saw two specimens in Surabaya, Ngagel Jaya, of which I managed

te collect one female. This specimen is without any doubt jPL ctemoleiLs madyanus Wallace,1865, Because efthe few earlier records ofthis spocies in JavaIhad not expected these new
sightings at all, but asIhave seen three specimens and perhapsacaterpillar in the short timethat I was in Java, I can conclude that nowadays the introduction of this species has beenC`successfu1".
At the time this has already been confirmed by the otfer of R ctemoleus fromJava by an Australian dealer, from whom I received three males from East Java, respectivelyfrom Mt Wilis (26, VI, 1996), Mt Guniter (1, X. 1996) and Mt Argopuro (18. X. 1996).These males belong to ssp, thanius Fruhstorfer, 1908.
On the identity of PtzpitiO polytes aipheias Jordan, 1909 from N. Sulawesi=:syn. nov. of
Ripifib aiphenor perversas Rothschild, 1895
Studied material. R aiphenor perverstLs : coll. ZMA (Talaud ; Sangir; N. Celebes : Mina-hassa); R aiphenor polycritos: cQll. G. ten Broek, coll, J. Moonen (Peleng); R polytesaicindor : coll. ZMA, coll. G. ten Broek &coll, J. Moonen (Celebes, localities, see Fig. 8).
Before Fruhstorfer (1902) described his female Pt]pillo polytes ab, aipheias from Menado("female, which is alike aiphenor ? 9 from the Philippines"), in fact this form was alreadymentioned from Sulawosi as R aiphenor by ObemhUr (1879, p. 48) and by Semper (1892, p,277).
OberthUr (1879, p. 48) also mentioned R ledebouria from Sulawesi, of which Rothschild
(l895) judged that it concemed a "loc.
err,", a wrong locality, for he knew ledebouria as thePhilippine subspecies, but possibly it was also the taxon concerned,
Fruhstorfer (]902) mentioned the oocurrence of R polytes ab, aipheios in North Sulawesi butnot ofR polytes aloindbr OberthUr, 1879. Rothschild (1895) and Jordan (1909) excluded N.Sulawesi from the range of aicindbr. Mest authors have fo11owed Rothschild (1895) and
Jordan (1909) in that respect. The latter discussed the eccurrenee ofab. aipheias Fruhstorfer,
1902 in North Sulawesi, and pointed out that alpheias belongs to his group 2 of Paptilib
polytes, which corresponds to the type description of Fruhstorfer.
Jordan (I909) raised the aberration aipheios of Fruhstorfer to a subspecific level and so made
the name valid : Paptilo polytes aiphei(rs Jerdan, 1909.
From North Sulawesi, Martin (1915) knew aiphei(rs Fruhstorfer ({jZ dii & \\) but alsomales of aicindor, However from this sympatric occurrence he did not conclude that there
are two species in Northern Su]awesi instead ofone, as he did with regard to Graphium mitbn
and (1 monticolvm. Not until l971 did Hiura & Alagar split the species Papi2lo polytes intotwo species : R polytes Linnaeus and R aiphenor Cramer (Jordan's group 1 and group 2respectively), That makes the situation in Northern Sulavyesi clear. It is reached from thesouth by R palytes aicinclor and from the north by R aiphenor. Tsukada&Nishiyama
(1980, pl. 114, fig. S) figured as R polytes aipheias a male of aleindor from Doluduo, N.Sulawesi, which is the first recent confirmation of the occurrence of aicindor in NonhernSulawesi.
In the collection of the Zoological Museum of Amsterdam there are short series of bothspecies from N. Sulawesi (Figs 2-7),
In Talaud and Sangihe PapiZiO aiphenor pervensus Rothschild, 1895 oocurs, I cannot see inthese series any differences between aipheios and perversus (Figs 4-7) although Jordan (1909)mentioned Some, so aipheicrs has to be treated as a synonym of perversus (syn. noy.).

Paptilo aiphenor polycritas Fruhstorfer, 1901 was described from the Sula Islands and also
occurs in Peleng Island (=aiphenor Fruhstorfer, 1902 from Bankai (=Peleng)). The map

the label of R aiphenor perversus in the Zoological Museum of Amsterdam on wbich iswritten only
"Minahassa", the range on the map contains the whole Minahasa.
One male of PapiZlo polytes aleinclor in the collection of the Zoological Museum o{

(1930) mentioned the occurrence of Pql)illo polytes aicindor in Butung (Buton),
