Memorial Freedom Run
July 4 2019 Parley P Pratt Freedom Run Over 400 people were in attendance for the Parley P. Pratt Free-dom run this year, with 171 runners completing the 4 mile run and nearly 200 completing the 1 mile run. Prior to the race vet-erans were recognized and a Cub Scout Pack posted the flag and led the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance. Then patriotic sing-ing was followed by a short message by Phil Schaefer, Senior Pastor at Christian Fellowship. He stressed the importance of religious freedom and how this First Amendment freedom should be recognized and protected. Robbins/LaFontaine were the winning couple. Not long afterwards they became LaFontaine/LaFontaine. The previous day, May 14, Tom had won the Run for the Border 5k in Mexico at 17:27, while Linda was 2nd female behind Jane Downing's 19:08

June 21, 1969: MVAAU One Hour Run: 1. Carl Owczarzak, 25,a Shawnee Mission, KS teacher and coach, 10 miles, 1,748, yards. an MVAAU record, Owczarzak came to many CTC races in the 60s and 70s. He ran HOA five times with a 2:42:41 PB in '68. 2. Bill Wirtz, SE MO State.10, 1251, 3. Ken Katzer, Lincoln, NE, 10,828, a 6-time HOA veteran, PB 2:44:05, also '68, 4. Sal Citarella, CTC. . . ,Joe Duncan 8,847 The first MVAAU hour run was in June, 1968 on Hickman Track with three runners; Arne Richards*, Bob Whitman and Joe Duncan. *Arne (Arnie) Richards, between 1963-78, ran HOA 13 times with two sub-3s and all the others sub-3:10except for a 3:11:01 in '67. He had seven age 40+ times between 2:59:16 and 3:08:38.
A librarian at K-State, in the late 50's, he came to Manhattan, KS from Chicago, where he was already an outstanding distance runner with a strong Chicago running club. Arne was an interesting fellow: a tall lanky bachelor with a penchant for handwritten notes of advice, counsel and comments on tablet paper or whatever scrap of paper was handy. In this age of twitter he would be rapidly pumping out tweets like confetti blanketing a Times Square parade. He never owned a car. He came to Columbia races via Greyhound bus, then walked to the old Ben Bolt hotel on the north side of Walnut between 8th & 9th. Bob Anderson was a 17-year old high school student/runner in Manhattan when he decided to start a magazine focused on distance running. With Arne Richards as a mentor he brought his concept to fruition resulting in "Distance Running News." Vol. I, No.1, January, 1966, Arne's name was on the masthead as Chairman of the Editorial Board. This first DRN was a 51/2 X 8 inch 28-page pamphlet with small type and a few b & wphotos, including a cover shot of the 1965 HOA. BillClark wrote the lead article--about HOALate in 1969 Anderson moved to California, establishinghis operation in Mountain View. He renamed his, now aslick magazine, "The Runner's World" , Several yearslater "The" was dropped. The first edition of themagazine was dated July, 1970, Vol. V, No. 4,seamlessly continuing the numbering system from DRN.On March 26, 1979, while on a run in the Manhattanarea, Arne collapsed and died. He was 46 yearsold. Atrial fibrillation, they said.Joe Henderson, first editor, other than Anderson, of"Runner's World, said, "Today's magazine -- and sport -- bear Arne's imprint." The Mid- America Masters Running Association created the "Arne Richard Award" which, for a few years, was given to an individual for services promoting distance running.

2019 Columbia Track Club Youth Summer Track and Field Program
This year was the 46th consecutive CTC Youth Summer Track and Field Program. We hosted five meets with a total of 250 children ages 3-15. We moved back to Rock Bridge High School track thanks in large measure to Principal Jen Rukstad, Athletic Director David Egan, and the football coaches who went out of their way to help make our meets run smoothly. Also, the Westside Kiwanis Club gave CTC a sizeable cash donation for the CTC youth programs and we thank the Westside Kiwanis Club for the generosity.
Mainly, we were blessed to have the following meet officials: Amy Gundy, Nancy Rezabeck, Mark and Erin Keyes, Nancy and Tony Taube, Bill and Jean Williams, Jeanine Pagan, Ellen Williamson, Kevin Tyler, Linda and Tom LaFontaine, Katie Juettner, Katie, Ryan, and sons Andrew and Matthew Hauser, the Edidin family, Fishman-Weaver family, Gay family, Nathan Forck, Marissa Kraus, Thom and Andrea Allen, Tom May, and Anne and Dick Hessler (I hope I haven’t missed anyone).
A total of 220 kids participated and we got all the meets in, but had to cut the last running event short at the first and second meets due to lightning. No injuries, lots of smiles, and quality officials made for a great series.

Report from the National Senior Games by Kevin Tyler
The National Senior Games are held every two years and this summer they were held in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I participated in the 5k on June 21st and the 10k on June 23rd. My wife Julee and I took two days to drive out there and I took those two days off from running. Then over the next two days I did three thirty minute jogs at altitude to try and acclimate myself a bit to Albuquer-que's 5,000 foot level. Then I took a day off before the 5k.
Two days before the 5k race we struck up a conversation with a woman in the hotel elevator. She asked us if we could give her a ride to the 5k so she wouldn't have to take the hotel shuttle which was a much slower process. It turned out that this person was 87 year old Maria Georgiev whom we would later watch win her age group in 37:57, a full 5:04 faster than her second place rival. It was our honor to escort the gold medalist to and from the event. Maria is a retired cardiologist so she knows the value of running.
The age groups ranged from 50-54 all the way to 90-94 in the 5k and to 85-89 in the 10k. There were 426 runners in the 5k and 290 runners in the 10k but the focus is on the age groups. On the back of your shirt you must wear the beginning number of your age group. Since I was in the 60-64 group, I wore a big 60 as the target on my back.
The morning of the 5k the local weather reporter on TV gave an air quality alert that the air was considered very unhealthy. Smoke from Arizona wildfires had blown in and polluted the air. Seniors over 65 were advised to stay in their houses with the windows closed until noon. I believe every running senior ignored this advice and it seemed that everything went well as no one was taken away in an ambulance.
The 5k was held in Balloon Fiesta Park where we ran the first mile on a huge blacktop road which resembled a car race or horse race-sized track. We then left the stadium and ran to the 2 mile mark where we turned around and came back to finish in the stadi-um. The incentive of seeing the backs of lots of racers wearing the age category of 60 in front of me really helped me in the last halfmile as I think I passed five or six of them. I finished 21st out of 49 in my age group in the time of 23:57. After the race as I wassneezing and coughing, Julee and I were quite moved to see everyone cheering in the older runners as they finished. It was especial-ly great to see Maria finish strong.
It was good to have a day off before the 10k race. I feel like the Missouri Senior Games 10k course that race director Lisa Wells had me run two weeks earlier was perfect preparation for this Albuquerque race. The Missouri race course goes downhill a long way on Highland Parkway and then turns around and heads a long way up Highland Parkway towards the finish. The National course had three tenths of a mile at the beginning and end on a road and the rest was on The Bosque Forest paved trail along the Rio Grande river which went downhill until the 3.1 mile turnaround where we reversed and ran uphill all the way back to the road and the fin-ish. It was cooler that morning and we had good air. I finished 20th out of 33 in my age group in a time of 50:24. I was very hap-py with my time.
Slowing down is just something that happens to senior runners and you just have to go with it. I'm so blessed that I can still do this. I hope to continue running for many more years after being inspired by the National Senior Games. I couldn't do it without my great wife Julee who has always supported my running adventures.

This is John Anderson on the first lap of the 5K at Iowa State where he is running third right behind the two world class runners - Gary Patton & John Roeske. Needless to say they pulled away shortly after this.

John Anderson, CTC member, is currently listed as 7th best in the US for my 70-74 age group in the World Masters Rankings of certified & reported 5K road races in the US. John ran the Jefferson City Roadrunners Spring Fling 5K in Jefferson City, a USATF certified course on April 20 in 24:59. His last 5K time trial was 23:15. On June 15 he ran 14:06 at the 3000 meter race on the Fort Osage track in the USATF regional track & field championships on June 15th. He said that was the first time he has run in spikes on a track in 35 years. On July 11, John ran the USATF Masters National Track Championship 5000 meter run at Iowa State University in 23:53, placing 5th. He was on pace to run 23:20 up to 3000 meters but says he faded a bit in the last 5 laps. His next race is the 3000 meters on the MU track on July 27th at the Show Me State Games.

This proclamation will be read and issued Tuesday, August 13th at the Chambers (on the first floor) of the Boone County Government Center across from the Courthouse (the building is located at the corner of 9th St. and Ash). 6th Ward Council Person Betsy Peters, and Boone County Commissioner Janet Thompson will help pass out medals at the finish. 4th Ward Council Person Ian Thomas will be busy running on his own relay team! 2nd Ward Council Person Mike Trapp will be at the pre-race banquet.

The 60th Annual Heart of America Marathon - Updates By Kathy Lee
The New Map is Here!
Course Certification - May brought our certification official to Columbia to measure and certify the 60th An-nual Heart of America Marathon. With the change to the start and finish line to the Boone County History and Culture Center, came a need to re-certify in accordance with USATF guidelines. The certifier, along with CTC Board member Andy Emerson, and me, spent Saturday and Sunday riding the course on bicycles taking measurements and doing computations. This certification is good for ten years, so we are set for this year and many more HOAs to come! Joe Schroeder, (1939-2019) was the first winner of the Heart of America Marathon in 1960 when the course ran from Columbia to Fulton. Joe and his children were hoping to attend the pre-race banquet and the race this Labor Day, but Joe passed away April 16th. This race was important to Joe, and he often came out to the fin-ish line to watch and support runners as they came in. HOA remains important to his children as well. Joe’s family will be at the pre-race banquet, and some have signed up to run the marathon! Pre-race Banquet – Be sure to sign up for the pre-race banquet – all are welcome, you do not have to run the marathon to come and enjoy good food, a slideshow, history, tall-tales, and an interesting panel!
