FINDLAYThe University of Findlay

Physician Assistant ProgramNote to Prospective Physician Assistant StudentsThank you for expressing interest in the Physician Assistant Program at The University of Findlay. At the time this booklet was printed, The University of Findlay was offering a “2 + 2” program of study leading to the granting of a Bachelor of Science degree with emphasis in Physician Assistant. There were two years of pre-professional education and two years of professional education. A Master’s Degree option is not currently available, but is in the planning stages. We are working diligently toward receiving approval to transition to a Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) program. Once we receive approval, we will update this booklet and our web page. Please check with the program office to determine if this option has become available after the printing of this booklet.

Any student who is otherwise qualified for entry into The University of Findlay is eligible to declare themselves Pre-PA majors and take the prerequisite courses. As explained in this booklet, the student will then apply through the Centralized Application Service for Physician Assistant (CASPA) for a position in the professional phase of the program on a competitive basis. All prerequisites do not have to be completed at the time of the CASPA application, but must be completed prior to matriculation into the PA Program.

Graduates of our program, which is fully accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission for Physician Assistants (ARC-PA) are eligible to sit for the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE).

The Physician Assistant Program at The University of Findlay was granted initial full accreditation from The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Programs (CAAHEP) in April of 2000. ARC-PA became independent in January of 2001. Continuing full accreditation was awarded in March 2003 with the next accreditation review scheduled for 2007.

The class size is 18 for students entering the professional component of the PA Program. The program reserves the right to increase or decrease this number depending upon available resources.

While every effort is made to ensure the accuracy of the information contained in this booklet, please be advised that The University of Findlay and the Physician Assistant Program reserve the right to make changes, corrections, or amendments as deemed appropriate and necessary without prior notice. If requirements change from year to year, students are subject to the requirements in effect at the time they enroll. It is the responsibility of the student to stay abreast of all requirements. Page 10: Note to Prospective Physician Assistant Students

The University of Findlay Physician Assistant ProgramThe Edward and Joyce Brewer Center for Health Sciences houses The University of Findlay’s Physician Assistant Program and provides classrooms and laboratories for the Physical and Occupational therapy programs. In addition, Blanchard Valley Regional Health Care Center operates an outpatient clinic focused on physical therapy, occupational therapy, sports medicine and pediatric rehabilitation services. The office for the Physician Assistant Program is located in Room 212.

Entering freshmen can enter the “2 + 2” Bachelor’s Degree program. Once accepted into The University of Findlay, students wishing to become PAs will spend the first two years of academic study completing the required general education courses, competencies, and program-specific prerequisite courses. The student will then apply to the PA Program during or sometime after the sophomore year. Qualified applicants will be admitted into the professional component of the program in a competitive admission process.

Applicants with previous higher educational experiences are required to fulfill the same requirements for a Bachelor of Science degree as all other applicants to the PA Program and must apply to The University of Findlay through the Office of Graduate and Special Programs. (http://www.findlay.edu/admission/graduate/)

If the applicant will have all of the general education, competency, and program-specific requirements finished prior to the beginning of the next PA class, he or she will then make a separate application to The University of Findlay PA Program through the Centralized Application Service for Physician Assistant (CASPA) in equal competition will all other applicants.

The professional component for the Bachelor’s Degree program consists of four 16-week semesters and three summer terms. It runs continuously from early June (usually the first Monday in the month) until early to mid-August. There are four semesters of didactic and laboratory work in basic and applied medical science, and three semesters of clinical experience. The clinical rotations consist of six 6-week experiences at a variety of clinical sites such as hospitals, clinics, and private offices during the fall and spring semesters of the second year of the program. The last summer semester is a 10 week clinical experience divided into one orthopedic rotation and 2 clinical clerkships.

10

Page 11: Note to Prospective Physician Assistant Students

The University of Findlay Physician Assistant ProgramThe second year of the professional component of the program consists of clinical experiences. The students rotate through the six mandated clinical rotations – 2 Family Practice Rotations, General Internal Medicine, OB/GYN, General Surgery, and Emergency Medicine. Clinical experience will be obtained by working in a variety of settings, such as hospital in-patient services, emergency departments, physician offices, ambulatory care centers, and other kinds of health care facilities. Successful completion of these six rotations is required.

During the 3rd semester of the senior year, students will take the required orthopedic surgery rotation and be allowed to chose from a list of “selective” clinical clerkships – clinical experiences that can be different from the basic, or core rotations. Students are strongly encouraged to take two separate experiences. One of these clerkships should be in a primary care setting (family practice, general internal medicine, or general pediatrics). This is the time in the curriculum where the student can pursue his or her interest in the sub-specialties, such as orthopedic surgery, cardiology, dermatology, etc.

Senior students participate in The University of Findlay May graduation ceremony. However, completion of the program occurs only after successfully completing the orthopedic and both selective rotations and passing a comprehensive written and practical examination. A separate Physician Assistant Program graduation ceremony is held in August after the completion of the last rotation of the summer semester.

Accreditation The University of Findlay is accredited by the Ohio Board of Regents, The Higher Learning Commission (part of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools), The Ohio State Board of Education, and The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, and is authorized to offer A.A., B.A., B.S., M.A., M.S., and M.B.A. programs by the Ohio Board of Regents.

The Physician Assistant Program at The University of Findlay is fully accredited by The Accreditation Review Committee on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc. and is a member of the Association of Physician Assistant Programs. Successful graduates of this program are eligible to take the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination for state licensure (or registration).

When the PA Program receives a complete CASPA application, the applicant will be sent a Supplemental Application if they meet all requirements, which must be returned by the deadline stated on that application along with a $35.00 check or money order made out to The University of Findlay Physician Assistant Program

A course completion plan, detailing how all prerequisites will be completed prior to the start of the PA professional level curriculum needs to be submitted directly to the Physician Assistant Program (not to CASPA) as part of the supplemental application. This plan must make it clear what courses are to be taken, where they are to be taken, and when they are to be taken. The supplemental application will be sent to all qualified applicants when their completed CASPA application is received. (CASPA does not send the program any application that is not complete and verified).

7. Submit your application to CASPA no later than November 1, 2006Application review begins early. It is strongly recommended that applicants submit their applications as soon as possible. After the CASPA application is received, the top candidates are invited for an interview. Qualified applicant interviews are scheduled in spring, typically middle February or March.

8. The deadline for having you application materials sent from CASPA to The University of Findlay is December 31, 2006.

Applying through CASPA as early in the year as possible is recommended. The processing time for CASPA from April through September is approximately 2 – 3 weeks. After September, it can take 4 – 6 weeks for your application to be processed and delivered to our program. Rare exceptions are allowed to this policy is the applicant is working closely with both CASPA and the PA Program.

All final admission decisions are made by the Physician Assistant Program Admissions committee. Candidates are notified in writing of the result of the application in a timely fashion following committee action.

You are strongly encouraged to apply as early as possible! Significant delays that could result in your application not being accepted could occur if you wait until November or December to begin the CASPA process.

Admission to the Physician Assistant Program

“The role of the physician assistant demands intelligence, sound judgment, intellectual honesty, the ability to relate to people and the capacity to react to emergencies in a calm and reasoned manner. An attitude of respect for self and others, adherence to the concepts of privilege and confidentiality in communicating with patients, and a commitment to the patient’s welfare are essential attributes.”

(The Standards and Guidelines for an Accredited Educational Program for the Physician Assistant, page 4)

Admission to the Physician Assistant Program is competitive. Applicants are selected based on a committee’s assessment of the applicant’s ability to successfully complete the training, and competently function in their professional role as defined by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc. as printed in the Standards and Guidelines for an Accredited Educational Program for the Physician Assistant, the State of Ohio, and the Program. Candidates must have the physical, emotional and intellectual attributes necessary for success in this type of training.

To successfully complete the program a candidate should: Have the academic ability to learn a large volume of technically detailed information

and be able to synthesize and use this data to solve complex clinical problems. This information must be acquired in a short and intense period of study which requires well-developed study skills and a high level of motivation.

Possess the emotional maturity and stability to approach highly stressful human situations in a calm and rational manner.

Be able to communicate effectively with patients and other health-care professionals from a wide diversity of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds in an empathetic and sensitive fashion.

Have well-developed oral and written communication skills.

The specific criteria used for admission decisions are as follows:1. Grade Point Averages – Overall and Science2. Completion of specific prerequisite coursework3. Clinical experience – amount and type4. Three letters of recommendation5. Performance on interview with those candidates meeting minimum admission

requirements6. The overall impression of the candidate as determined by the Admissions Committee

18

Page 19: Note to Prospective Physician Assistant Students

Admission CriteriaGrade Point Average (GPA) >2.75 out of 4.00For acceptance into the PA Program the minimum overall grade point average from all colleges and universities attended is 2.75 (on a 4.0 scale). In addition, each applicant must have a GPA of 2.75 (on a 4.0 scale) or better in either the CASPA-computed science. Courses with a grade below a “C” will not count toward fulfillment of academic requirements, but will be included in the overall grade point average.

Previous Degree StudentsStudents wishing to enter the Physician Program who already have advanced degrees in other fields will be required to comply with all published admission criteria of The University of Findlay and the PA Program.

Academic PrerequisitesThere are requirements for specific general education courses as well as proof of certain competencies that are listed as prerequisites for the PA Program. Students must have all of these courses or requirements completed prior to matriculation into the professional component of the PA Program. They may not be taken during or after the professional component of the program. Some students may be able to receive credit for certain prerequisites based upon professional experiences and/or placement tests.

Acceptance into the program will be contingent upon successful completion of all prerequisite courses before the start of the professional component of the program.

Some prerequisites may be in process at the time of application. Most traditional students are not able to complete their prerequisites before submitting their application. The only requirement is that all prerequisites must be completed by the end of the spring term preceding the summer term in which one anticipates matriculation in the Physician Assistant Program. For example, all prerequisites must be completed prior to 4 June 2007 for entry into the class of 2009.

It is the student’s responsibility to verify that all prerequisites have been successfully completed.

Students with prerequisite courses “in process” at the time of selection will be admitted contingent upon successful completion of these prerequisite courses. This requirement will be listed in an applicant’s acceptance letter. “Successful” completion is defined as earning a “C” or better in these courses. In addition, the applicant must maintain an overall grade point average that meets minimum admission standards. Failure to meet either of these two standards will result in denial of admission to the class.

No prerequisite coursework can be pending as of the start of the 1st summer term.

Page 22: Note to Prospective Physician Assistant Students

CPR and ACLS RequirementsCurrent certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) also known as basic life support (BLS) is a requirement for admission into the Physician Assistant Program.

Once a student has been admitted into the PA Program, he or she will need to either obtain initial certification in BLS or renew an expired certification. The student is responsible for any costs associated with obtaining this certification.

In order to enter the second year of the program (the clinical year) all students must have current certificates in BLS and advanced cardiac life support (ACLS). Each student is responsible for presenting valid, current BLS and ACLS credentials during the orientation session held prior to entering the clinical year. The student is responsible for any costs associated with obtaining this certification.

Work and Outside Activities PolicyPhysician Assistant students are required to master a large body of information in a very short period of time. Most of a student’s day and much of his or her evenings can be expected to be devoted to their studies.

Employment and extra-curricular activities such as college athletics are not specifically prohibited by policy, but each student must be aware of the difficulty of their academic program. The policy of the program is that outside activities and work are strongly discouraged.

Each student must realize that there may come a time when he or she will have to choose between their academic responsibilities and their outside commitments. How you decide is a personal matter.

We ask that you be prepared to make that choice! The clinical experiences, including the clinical clerkships in the summer, are so time and energy intensive that outside work is simply not appropriate for the typical student.

Page 24: Note to Prospective Physician Assistant Students

Selection Of ApplicantsStudents in the Physician Assistant Program will be selected from candidates submitting complete applications with all required supporting material to the Centralized Application Service for Physician Assistant (CASPA) and to The University of Findlay. A variety of criteria are used by the Physician Assistant Admissions Committee in making admission decisions. All candidates in any given year are treated equally. However the PA Program reserves the right to modify the admissions criteria from year to year as deemed appropriate.

Applicants considered suitable for admission will be invited to visit the University to interview with at least two PA Program faculty members, PA alumni, PA students, or other members of the admissions committee. The purpose of the interview is to ascertain more fully the applicant’s emotional and intellectual maturity, ability to communicate, and potential to achieve career satisfaction within the physician assistant role.

A number of factors are considered during the selection process for each Physician Assistant class. Criteria such as grades, personal interview, program preparation, writing ability, recommendations, goals, employment experience, community and professional involvement are considered.

Factors used in the selection process include but may not be limited to: Academic experience

a) previous college: cumulative grades, science course grades, and graduate studies;b) academic patterns such as most recent academic performance, credit load,

withdrawals, and incomplete courses. Health care experience with consideration to type and duration. This can include both

paid and volunteer experience. Letters of recommendation on prescribed forms which examine the applicant’s

abilities, communication skills, motivation, interpersonal skills, and emotional maturity.

The amount of prerequisite course work the applicant has left to complete along with the applicant’s plan for completion of these.

The background and life experiences of our applicants. The members of the admissions committee believe that enrollment of students with diverse cultural, geographic, academic, and occupational backgrounds enriches the learning experience and helps in sensitizing PA students to the unique characteristics of the diverse patient populations they will work with as health care providers.

Interpersonal skills

Students who are alumni of or who are currently enrolled in The University of Findlay are given special consideration in the application process.

24

If You Did Your Prerequisite Work at Another Institution:For those students entering the University from other institutions, or returning to the University after having received a degree from another institution, the following procedures should be applied: (Note: these procedures are for entering The University of Findlay, not application to the PA Program)1. Apply to The University of Findlay through the Office of Graduate and Special if you are

coming to Findlay to finish your prerequisite courses. There is no fee for this application. If you are only planning to attend the professional component of the PA Program, a completed CASPA application will be accepted as an application to The University of Findlay, but transcripts will still need to be supplied.

2. In support of this application, students must have official transcripts from all colleges, universities, and high schools previously attended sent to the Office of Graduate and Special Programs. There may be a fee for this service, depending upon the policies of the transferring institution. You are encouraged to do this as early in the application process as possible!

a. The Office of the Registrar will complete a Transcript Evaluation of prior course work to determine which course(s) will be accepted for credit toward prerequisites, competencies, and electives, and which courses remain to be taken.

b. If an applicant indicates on his or her application that they are interested in applying to the PA Program, the Program Director will be sent a copy of this transcript evaluation.

3. If all prerequisite course work has been completed or can be completed prior to the start date of the PA Program class being applied to, the applicant should then submit an application with all supporting materials to the Centralized Application Service for Physician Assistant (CASPA).

4. If all prerequisite course work has not been completed, the applicant should begin to complete them. It is strongly recommended that all potential applicants who are completing their prerequisites at other institutions consult with The University of Findlay’s Registrar’s Office to ensure that courses will be acceptable in transfer.

Students attending The University of Findlay full time to obtain their prerequisite course work will receive special consideration in the application process.

5. Prerequisites may be taken at an institution other than The University of Findlay. Students are encouraged to obtain prior written confirmation that the course will transfer. The process is as follows:a. Write a letter to the Office of the Registrar. This letter should include:

1. Student’s name, address, phone number, and the student’s University of Findlay identification number;

2. Name of the course to be evaluated for transfer;3. Name of the institution where the course will be taken;

4. Copy of the course description from that institution’s catalog.b. Mail or fax this letter to:

The University of Findlay Office of the Registrar1000 North Main StreetFindlay, Ohio 45840Fax: (419) 434-4822

6. Apply to the Physician Assistant Program by the deadline.

25

Page 26: Note to Prospective Physician Assistant Students

Advanced Placement And Transfer Admissions Advanced placement and credit for previous work done as part of an applicant’s pre-professional curriculum shall be governed by University policy for advanced placement as defined in the University catalog: “Advanced Placement Examination of the college Entrance Examination Board are not required for admission, but it is possible to receive advanced standing and/or college credit by submitting the results of the Advanced Placement Examination. Credit and/or waiver may be given for grades of three or better upon evaluation by the appropriate College Dean.”5

An evaluation of the number of credits and courses accepted for transfer will follow the letter of acceptance. Transfer credit is normally granted when courses taken at an institution accredited by an approved agency are completed with a grade of “C” or better and are not developmental in nature as defined by The University of Findlay. The final decision regarding the acceptance of credit rests with the Office of the Registrar.

Any candidate requesting transfer into The University of Findlay’s PA program must complete the standard admission process to the University and the Physician Assistant Program; and must be eligible to return to the institution from which he or she is transferring.

Students under academic suspension or dismissal from another institution will not be admitted to The University of Findlay until eligible to return to the former institution.

The holder of an associate degree from an accredited two-year institution can transfer a maximum of 62 semester hours credit to The University of Findlay and, in most cases, receive junior class status.

Previous Physician Assistant Course WorkIt is the policy of The University of Findlay Physician Assistant Program not to grant academic credit towards completion of the PA Program for courses taken as part of another PA Program. Students wishing to earn their degree as a Physician Assistant from The University of Findlay will be required to meet all university requirements for the granting of a baccalaureate degree and enter the first semester of the professional phase of the program and take the entire sequence of courses in the Physician Assistant Program curriculum. No credit or advanced standing will be awarded for any PHAS-designated courses6.

All accredited Physician Assistant Programs are reviewed by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc. and are granted accreditation only after they have demonstrated that they are in compliance with the published Standards. However, the method by which each program meets the Standards is different. There are different course sequences and there are often different teaching methods.

For this reason, it is extremely difficult for a student to move from one PA program to another without the risk of not being taught portions of the curriculum. Any applicant currently attending a PA Program at another institution desiring to matriculate into The University of Findlay Physician Assistant Program must meet all published admission requirements for the PA Program as well as The University of Findlay and will be required to follow all admission procedures and submit an application through CASPA.5 Findlay Undergraduate Catalog, Effective Fall 2003, p. 10.6 All courses in the professional phase of the PA Program are designated “PHASXXX”

26

Page 27: Note to Prospective Physician Assistant Students

Foreign Medical GraduatesGraduates of foreign medical schools will have to meet all applicable university requirements for the degree being sought.

No credit or advanced standing will be given for professional-level courses (PHAS-designated courses). Medical school courses cannot be accepted as substitutes for any PHAS-designated course.

All applicants submitting transcripts from academic institutions outside the United States must submit those transcripts to The University of Findlay Office of International Academic Advising and Services. This office will evaluate official copies of transcripts from all non-US colleges, universities, and medical schools. All courses taken as part of his or her previous medical training will be evaluated to determine whether they meet the program prerequisites and a grade point average will be determined. Work done in foreign institutions can only be accepted as satisfying PA Program prerequisites if and only if deemed appropriate by the Office of International Academic Advising and Services and the Registrar’s Office.

All graduates from The University of Findlay who earn a Bachelor’s Degree must fulfill competency and general education requirements, as well as any program-specific requirements. If an applicant has a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution, the general education requirements are satisfied, but not university competency requirements. Therefore, there is no certainty that holding a medical degree from a foreign medical school will satisfy any or all of these requirements.

Decisions concerning general education and competency requirements are made exclusively by the Office of the Registrar. The PA Program has no authority to grant or deny credit, waive, or make substitutions in these two areas.

Costs Associated with the PA ProgramTo earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in The Physician Assistant Program the student must successfully complete two components – the pre-professional phase and the professional phase. Any student who meets the admission requirements of The University of Findlay and is accepted into the University may enroll in the pre-professional phase of the degree program. Admission into The University of Findlay does not constitute admission into the professional phase of the Physician Assistant Program.

Once a student has been accepted into the professional component of the Physician Assistant Program there is a different fee schedule for tuition as well as additional costs necessitated by the nature of the education provided. The following information is provided to allow a prospective student to arrive at an estimate of how much money will be needed in order to complete his or her degree. Please refer to the current Undergraduate Catalog or contact the Financial Aid Office for information regarding the costs associated with the pre-professional phase.

The current University undergraduate states: “The current operating cost of higher education is supported primarily by three areas of income: tuition and fees; endowments; and gifts from alumni, businesses, parents, and friends. The University of Findlay is conscious of the ever-increasing cost of a college education and makes every effort to provide a quality education for the lowest possible cost.

All University fees must be paid or proper financial arrangements made with The University of Findlay Business Office prior to the first day of classes. A finance charge may be applied to unpaid accounts.

The Board of Trustees reserve the right at any time to amend or add to the regulations of the University, including those concerning fees and methods of payment. The amendments and/or additions apply to students currently enrolled as well as to new students.”

Costs Of the Pre-Professional Program Students who anticipate entering the Physician Assistant Program need to accurately determine their need for financial assistance in meeting their goal of becoming a PA. The Financial Aid Office at The University of Findlay encourages all prospective students to contact them as soon as possible so that all avenues for financial assistance may be pursued in a timely manner. The Financial Aid Office may be reached at 419-434-4792 (1-800-558-9060, extension 4792).

The following tuition costs are based upon the fee schedule available at the time of printing of this Information Booklet which was published in the spring of 2006. Prospective students must take into account cost-of-living increases as well as inflation in determining their extent of financial need. Fees listed are based upon charges approved by the Board of Trustees and are, as far as can be ascertained, effective as of the publication date of this document. As noted above they are subject to change by the Board of Trustees of The University.

29

Page 30: Note to Prospective Physician Assistant Students

Costs Of the Pre-professional Program (Continued)Students who attend The University of Findlay full time to take their prerequisite course work are charged at the same rate as other, non-professional, non-graduate program students. At the time this document was prepared for publication, the following fees were provided as accurate by the business office at The University of Findlay. The University’s web page: (http://www.findlay.edu/offices/business/general/fees.html) is periodically updated to reflect the current charges and fees and should be consulted prior to making any final decisions about financial needs and obligations.

Each applicant should consult with the Financial Aid Office at The University of Findlay to obtain information about what forms and amounts of aid are available.

Costs Of the Professional Program The following cost estimates are to be used to calculate the cost of the professional phase of the Physician Assistant Program and are not to be used to determine cost of obtaining the necessary prerequisite courses prior to entering the professional component.

Tuition for the Physician Assistant Program will be charged on a per hour basis. The current estimate of the per-hour charge is $534 per semester hour. This is the rate officially to be charged beginning in the summer session of 2006. However, the exact amount to be charged will depend upon the factors that cannot be accurately predicted – inflation, cost-of-living adjustments, actions by the Board of Trustees, etc. The Physician Assistant Program believes that the quoted figure will suffice for planning purposes.

7 Tuition and fees subject to change by the Board of Trustees without notice.

30

Page 31: Note to Prospective Physician Assistant Students

Costs Of the Professional Program (Continued)Once a student has been accepted into the Physician Assistant Program, he or she will be charged differently than students not accepted into the program. Students will be billed a per-semester-hour charge. At the time of preparation of this document, the current rate per semester hour was $534 per semester hour.

Each applicant and student is strongly advised to consult with the Financial Aide Office on the campus of The University of Findlay to determine what forms of financial assistance, if any, are available to them.

It is the current policy of The University of Findlay that students entering into the University desiring to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree as part of the PA Program, a 4 year bachelor program, will be charged as follows:

a. The first 2 years the students will be charged full time tuition.b. The second 2 years the students will be charged by the credit hour rate at a rate set

by the business office. c. The students will be only eligible for the following academic financial aid.

50% of the hourly rate for the Val-Sal grant and 50% of academic merit aid. d. Other aid such as state, federal, tuition waiver, athletic, band, theater, etc. maybe

applied over merit aid.e. This policy will stay in place until the program changes to a master-entry level.

The following table represents an estimate of the costs for tuition, room, and board for students enrolled at The University of Findlay in the professional component of the Physician Assistant Program.

As part of the effort to continuously improve the academic program, the Physician Assistant Program reserves the right to increase the number of hours in the course of study which could result in higher costs than are listed here. All such changes are made in accordance with The University of Findlay’s academic policies and procedures.

While it is the intent to provide the most accurate information available, it is a certainty that these costs will become higher as the student progresses within the program because these numbers represent the costs as of May 2006. These figures are provided so that a potential student may make financial plans based upon the best available data.

There are program-specific costs associated with Physician Assistant education such as books, supplies, housing, and travel. The exact amount will differ according to an individual’s circumstances. The table below is based upon surveys made of current PA students and is provided as an estimate of anticipated costs for the average student. For some it could be much more, for some it could be less.

32

Travel ExpensesWhenever possible, clinical sites will be within 100 to 150 miles of Findlay, Ohio. Most clinical sites will not have housing available for students. Because of this, it is imperative that each student have their own reliable transportation available throughout their training as well as being prepared for additional housing expenses. Transportation adds an unpredictable expense to each student’s financial burden, and therefore this must also be taken into account when making your financial plans.

The University of Findlay PA Program makes use of the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. Housing is available at this site on a first-come, first-serve basis at no additional cost. All students should plan on spending 6 weeks in Dayton during their senior year.

Minimum Technical Standards for Continuation and Graduation

In its Accreditation Standards for Physician Assistant Education, ARC-PA, Inc., states on page 11:

“A5.16: Admission of students, including advanced placement, must be made in accordance with clearly defined and published practices of the institution and the program.

A5.17: At a minimum, the following information must clearly be defined, published, and readily available to prospective students:

a. Requirements for prior education or work experienceb. Policies regarding advanced placement, transfer of credit, and credit for

experiential learningc. Specific academic and technical standards.”

Technical standards refer to the technical “skills”, or attributes of a person that are felt necessary to accomplish the desired task. In the case of medical education in general, and Physician Assistant Education training specifically, there are several areas of particular interest. Many technical standards may be met with the use of reasonable accommodations, but some may not.

In the practice of medicine, the following areas are essential: The use of motor skills for diagnostic and therapeutic maneuvers; The use of sensory skills to obtain basic science skills, evaluate laboratory tests and

experiments, the taking of medical histories and observing the course of a patient’s health related event;

Communication skills, with patients and other health care providers; Intellectual-conceptual abilities necessary for problem solving and diagnosis; Meeting the physical demands which have a behavioral and/or social context, including

typical daily workloads, working in an environment which may change rapidly without warning, and/or in unpredictable ways, and meeting professional responsibilities to patients.

34

Page 35: Note to Prospective Physician Assistant Students
