• Reporting - thorough, accurate and meaningful

What was done Outcomes

Identify anomalies /trends in space changes /benchmarking

• High level space sub type analyses (previous slide)

• Re-analysis of Go8 Room Tables after revised RT and RF implementation

• Space Survey data and trends analyses

• Workshops - polylining GFA, UCA, voids, stairs UFA, NUFA, Workstation information, Shared space/Learning spaces

Space SubTypes: A more granular and operationally useful approach to analyse space (no extra coding required) – a roll up of existing room types into 44 space subtypes.

Increased awareness and understanding of different methods used/interpretations of definitions applied eg., to new teaching and learning spaces

Need for consistency in approach and examples to follow - Go8 Space Playbook.

Research space

Develop a method for capturing research space, that can be used in reporting and benchmarking research related performance metrics.

What was done Outcomes

Review and revise space definitions and codes • TEFMA survey reports on catch all - “Academic Space” • Go8 want to identify Research Core and Research Admin

space for Go8 and international benchmarking used Room Function codes assigned to each room

to determine total Research related space m2

for consistency applied assumption of 50:50 split for space with an T&R dual purpose Room Function.

• Individual Universities totals captured• Metrics such as space per Research $, space per Research

student, etc now possible

In general, • Research Only m2 > Teaching Only m2

• Teaching & Research shared m2 > or = Teaching only m2

• Space data is operationally useful

What was done Outcomes

EFTSL space m2 per discipline (ASCED code)

• Establish Go8 2013 benchmarks• Compare to TEFMA SPG figures – 2002/2009 data

After taking out the effect of outliers (in each ASCED category), Go8 results tend to be higher overall, but are not greatly dissimilar to the TEFMA figures.

Project Scope and VisionThe new building for the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning (ABP) supports the effective delivery of integrated planning, design and construction practices at the University of Melbourne. It provides a collaborative research environment and improve student amenity at the centre of the Parkville campus. Following an international design competition in 2008, John Wardle Architects in collaboration with Boston based practice NADAAA are appointed to design the new Melbourne School of Design. The building has been awarded a 6 Star Greenstar - Education Design v1 Rating by the Green Building Council of Australia. The 6 Star Rating represents 'World Leadership' in environmentally sustainable building practices.Only 12 buildings in Australia have received a 6 Star Greenstar Education Design – v1 rating, and our ABP building is the largest. Significantly, the new ABP building is the only one to ever be awarded all 10 innovation points in the evaluation criteria.

Aim: Archive of current new building case studies to provide benchmark snap shots as a better source for space planning, space standards and new builds on campus.

What was done: Universities provided briefs based on a common template for several building projects on their campus as indicative of current space and building trends.

• Space data is operationally useful

Aim: to investigate the feasibility of international space benchmarking against UK University sector.

Obvious differences between UK sector and Go8 Group

but important to determine

• if definitions used for AUDE KPIs and metric analysis were comparable to Australian definitions.

• Weighted averages used – can be difficult to tell weighting applied

• NIA and GIA probably OK, but various terminology used• Academic estate, GIA, total GIA, non-residential GIA • NIA, non-residential NIA, total net non-residential space • “Is close to”/”nearest comparison”

• EFTSL numbers alone will have a big bearing on metric comparisons

• Separate space defined - special research space per research student, general research per research student

• KPI definitions not totally clear

AUDE Report 2014/2015 used KPIs to help understand overall performance of the UK Higher Education Estate.

Go8 and Russell Group were ranked for a number of KPIs and metrics.

The mix of space comparisons undertaken provides valuable and meaningful views of each Institution’s estate (and as a group), not only from a Space Managers and Facilities Management perspective, but can be useful information for Executive Management and for lobbying to Government.

Regular benchmarking of space types and functions can enhance long term outcomes for an Institution’s or sector’s KPIs.

Space Project Work

26

Tangible outcomeThe combination of work done on space codes, Go8 trend analysis, case studies,

research and other space exercises has clearly contributed to data cleansing, more robust reporting & benchmarking (consistency).
