His parents could have had high hopes for him to be an influential religious leader. The name “Matthew” conveys the idea of one who is involved with quarreling and strife. He might have even been the banished brother of one of the other disciples, the other James. Hugonian thots: Matthew was from a well off family and but took his share of the estate and went into the tax business which was a great way to get richer but was also an act of familial and national betrayal. His name change could indicate that he turned his back on his parents hopes for his life. He became a topic of family shame.
