This chart is intended to graphically show what is required in the way of engine preparation and tuning to obtainbest results with each particular NOS system. For example, you can see that its OK to use any number of NOSsystems with virtually stock engines. Some upgrades are recommended, but not essential. As we get down to themore powerful systems, it is evident that a true high performance engine with forged aluminum pistons, forged steelor aluminum rods and a forged steel crankshaft will be required. Because of high cylinder pressures, its also advis-able to equip the engine with heavy-duty cylinder head and main studs. Above all, special attention must be paidto the fuel and ignition systems. Most of the more powerful kits will require an aftermarket fuel pump, and an igni-tion with retard capabilities is highly recommended.

These are three basic types of nitrous systems: dry, wet, anddirect port. The most misunderstood is the dry type of system.A dry nitrous system simply means that the fuel required tomake additional power with nitrous will be introduced throughthe fuel injectors (remember, fuel makes power, nitrous simply letsyou burn more of it). This keeps the upper intake dry of fuel. Weaccomplish this by two methods. First, is to increase the pressure

to the injectors by applying nitrous pressure from the solenoidassembly when the system is activated. This causes an increase infuel flow just like turning up the pressure on your garden hosefrom 1/ 2 to full. The second way we can add the required fuel isto increase the time the fuel injector stays on. This is accomplishedby changing what the computer sees, basically tricking the com-puter into adding the required fuel. In either case, once the fuelhas been added, the nitrous can be introduced to burn the sup-plemental fuel and generate additional power.

The second type of nitrous kit is the wet style of kit. These kitsinclude carburetor plate systems and add nitrous and fuel at thesame time and place (normally 3-4" ahead of the throttle bodyfor fuel injected applications or just under the carb as with platesystems). This type of system will make the upper intake wet withfuel. These systems are best used with intakes designed for wetflow and turbo/ supercharged applications.

The last type of system is the direct port system. Just as its nameimplies, it introduces the nitrous and fuel directly into each intakeport on an engine. These systems will normally add the nitrousand fuel together through a fogger nozzle or a NOSzle. Thefogger nozzle mixes and meters the nitrous and fuel delivered toeach cylinder. This is the most powerful and one of the most accu-rate type of systems. This is due to the placement of the nozzle ineach runner, as well as the ability to use more and higher capac-ity solenoid valves. A direct port system will have a distributionblock and solenoid assembly which delivers the nitrous and fuelto the nozzles by way of connecting tubes. Because each cylinderhas a specific nozzle and jetting (both nitrous and fuel), it is pos-sible to control the nitrous/ fuel ratio for one cylinder withoutchanging that of the other cylinders. These systems are also oneof the more complicated systems when installation is considered,as the intake must be drilled, tapped, and the plumbing madeto clear any existing obstructions. Because of this and the highoutput of these systems, they are most often used on racing vehi-cles built for the strain of such high horsepower levels.

"A N " Thread SizesAN sizes, originally developed for use by the U.S. Armed forces ("A" for army and "N" for navy), describe theoutside diameter (O.D.) of tubing in 1/ 16-inch increments. For example, an AN 2 fitting will fit a tube with anO.D. of 2/ 16", or 1/ 8", while an AN 8 fitting will fit a tube with an O.D. of 8/ 16", or 1/ 2". Because the actu-al thickness of tube walls can vary from brand to brand, the inside diameter of a tube is not used as a reference.

You will also find the dash (-) symbol or the word dash itself used in conjunction with AN sizes. A dash sixfitting translates to AN-6.Each AN fitting has an established thread sizing. The following chart shows the relationship between AN size, tube O.D., and SAE thread size:

"N PT" Thread SizesNPT sizes (National Pipe Taper) arethe most commonly used fitting sizesfor general plumbing, piping, and

tubing use; not quite as popular asAN for automotive use, but still verycommon. While AN fittings dependon the outside diameter of a tube forsizing, NPT fittings depend on theinterior diameter (I.D.) of the fittingitself. The following chart shows theeach sizes thread-per-inch count, theI.D. of the fitting, and the AN fittingsize with the closest-matchingI.D.(inside dimension).

which then expands and pushes the pistonsdown. Want to make more horsepower? Burnmore fuel so it will push the pistons down withmore force. Sounds pretty simple. But, its notquite so easy. While there are any number of factors that make increasing power a com-plex engineering problem, we will deal withthree of the most basic ones here.

First, all fuels require oxygen in order toburn. If you want to burn more fuel, you needto also put in more oxygen. Virtually allengine performance products increase powerby increasing the flow of fuel and oxygen.

Camshafts, larger carburetors or valves, port-ing, intake manifolds, exhaust headers, superchargers, turbochargers, and nitrousoxide are clear examples of how improvedengine breathing (putting in more oxygen inorder to burn more fuel) will give you anincrease in horsepower. Nitrous oxide injec-tion systems are probably the most efficientway to increase the flow of oxygen and fuel.

Thats the basic reason why nitrous systemsproduce such large horsepower increases.

Another basic power factor is vaporiza-tion of the fuel. Gasoline, as with other racingfuels, will not burn in a liquid state. The gaso-

line must be turned into a vapor for it to burn. This process of turning gasoline into a vapor issimple evaporation. It is basically no differentfrom setting a glass of water outside and waitingfor it to dry up. In the engine, of course, evapo-ration happens very quickly. Engine heat andfuel atomization are the keys to accelerating theevaporation process enough to turn raw gaso-line into a vapor at 8000 RPM. The process of atomization turns raw fuel flow into tiny dropletswhich then evaporate faster due to the largeramount of surface area presented for evapora-tion. The size of the fuel droplets is very impor-tant. Take a large droplet of gasoline, break it upinto 10 smaller droplets, and youve increasedthe surface area for more efficient evaporation.

The result is more fuel available to be burnedand do work during combustion. A well-designed nitrous system will produce very smalldroplet sizes in the supplemental fuel that flowsinto the engine with nitrous. This is one of thereasons that NOS nitrous systems can makemore horsepower than some other systems.

The third basic power factor we will look atis air/ fuel mixture density. Ever try to jog on topof a 10,000 foot pass in the Rockies? Leaves yougasping for breath, doesnt it? Thats because theair is thinner, less dense, higher up in the atmos-phere than it is at sea level. It is also why youwould run slower on a track in Denver than youwould near sea level in New Jersey. Density isaffected by atmospheric pressure (the weight of the atmosphere above you), heat, and humidity. We cant change the pressure of the atmosphere;but we can regulate the heat of our intakecharge to some extent. Cool cans and intercool-ers make extra power by cooling the fuel andair/ fuel mixture to make it denser. And, thedenser the mixture is, the more the cylinder ispacked with fuel and air to burn and makepower. When nitrous oxide is injected, it turnsfrom a liquid to a gas instantly and becomesvery cold. This cold nitrous vapor drops the tem-perature of the whole intake charge in the man-ifold by as much as 65 degrees F. The densermixture that results helps an engine produceeven more extra horsepower with a nitrous sys-tem.

W hat N itrous O xide Is and W hat N itrousOxide Isnt

To your engine, nitrous oxide is a more con-venient form of normal air. Since we are onlyinterested in the oxygen the air contains, nitrousoxide provides a simple tool for manipulatinghow much oxygen will be present when you addadditional fuel in an attempt to release morepower. The power always comes from the fuelsource. Nitrous oxide is not a fuel. Nitrous oxideis a convenient way to add the additional oxy-gen required to burn more fuel. If you add onlynitrous oxide and do not add additional fuel, you would just speed up the rate at which yourengine is burning the fuel that it normally uses.

This, more often than not, leads to destructivedetonation. The energy comes from the fuel, notthe nitrous. Nitrous oxide simply allows you toburn a greater quantity of fuel in the same timeperiod; thus, the overall effect is a tremendousincrease in the total amount of energy, or power, released from the fuel and available for acceler-ating your vehicle.

There is no voodoo involved in nitrous oxide. In effect, using nitrous is no different from using

a bigger carburetor, a better manifold, a super-charger, or a turbocharger. Understand that theair you and your engine breathe is made up, atsea level, of 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and

just 1% other gases. Nitrous oxide (N 2O) ismade by simply taking the 2 major componentsof earths atmosphere (in this case 2 moleculesof nitrogen and 1 molecule of oxygen) andattaching them together with a chemical bond. When the nitrous oxide goes into your enginethe heat of combustion breaks the chemicalbond to provide your engine more oxygen withwhich to burn fuel. As youve read, all raceengines operate under the same principles:more air (better breathing, supercharging, tur-bocharging, or nitrous) plus more fuel in adenser vapor equals more power.

N itrous O xide vs. Other Performa nce ProductsDollar for dollar, nitrous oxide offers the

most performance a consumer can buy. Youcould spend thousands of dollars on carbure-tion, a manifold, valve train components, exhaust, pistons, porting, supercharging, or tur-bocharging to get the same amount of extrahorsepower that a nitrous system would providefor just a few hundred dollars. But this doesntmean you wont benefit if you also install otherperformance parts. Once you have installed anitrous system, all those other performance parts

just increase the nitrous power. If you just have afew dollars and want lots of extra power, thebest choice is an NOS nitrous system.

Only nitrous is a part time power increaser. All of the standard performance parts put addi-tional stress on the engine and burn more fuel allthe time; not to mention what a pain it is to ridearound town with a lumpy idle from a camshaftthat is barely streetable. Power on demand is

one of the great things about a nitrous system; itonly works when the driver wants it. All the restof the time, the engine operates normally; noextra stress, no extra fuel use, and no drivelineproblems.

Of all the components in your NOS systemthat you see when you take it out of the box, there are three things that you may not fully rec-ognize until you have gone through the installa-tion process and used your NOS system for thefirst time.

Integrity. We stand behind our products. If we claim a system is capable of 100 horsepow-er, its because we designed it that way, tested itthat way, and manufactured it that way. If youare willing to follow our guidelines, youll get theresults that we say youll get.

Quality. There are a lot of things we doeveryday here at NOS. We test our productsand systems on sophisticated measuring equip-ment as well as the real-world environment of the vehicle its intended for. We pay strict atten-tion to the manufacturing procedures required tomaintain our high standards for components. We listen to what you have to say about the per-formance of our products along with your sug-gestions for new applications. N itrous O xide a nd EmissionsUse of nitrous oxide (N 2O) doesnt neces-

sarily increase the oxides of nitrogen (NO x)that pollute the air. Of course, NOS makesrace only systems that are not legal for useon pollution controlled engines. However,

many NOS systems have received certificationfor 50-state emissions legal use in the UnitedStates. The approvals for use on emissions con-trolled vehicles were obtained by independentlaboratory testing which proved that theseNOS systems do not increase tailpipe emis-sions in normal driving conditions. We recom-mend only emissions legal nitrous kits for useon engines subject to emissions and regula-tions.

Types of N itrous O xide Systems The two most popular types of nitrous oxide

systems are spray bar plate systems, such asthe Powershot, Cheater, and Big Shot automo-tive systems (which use a spacer plate betweenthe carburetor and manifold) and direct port.

The plate adds nitrous and supplemental fuel tothe intake air stream through built-in spraybars. Plate systems are used on automotiveengines on the street and in many racing class-es.

Direct port systems use specially designedinjectors, Fogger nozzles, to add the nitrousand supplemental fuel to each individual intakerunner. These systems can flow huge amountsof nitrous and fuel while distributing it evenly toevery cylinder. Multiple stage direct port sys-tems have produced much more than 500extra horsepower on some pro racing engines. All NOS Direct Port systems feature change-able nitrous and fuel jets for horsepoweradjustments and system tuning. Direct port sys-tems are used in both street and racing appli-cations on virtually every kind of engine. Somenitrous systems for fuel injection are a variation of Direct Port technology.

Tuning Your N O S System:A Few Important Points to Remember

Although this may seem like a very basic

factor, failure to thoroughly read the instruc-tions is the number one reason your systeminstallations will not be successful. Read ALLthe instructions included with your systemBEFORE you do anything at all! You may findthat you need to change something on yourengine or find that weve designed somethingnew that is different from some of the systemsyou may have seen in a magazine article. Savetime and headaches by taking the time to thor-oughly read all of the instructional materials.Call the NO S tech dept. if you have any ques-tions.

Always start conservative. Follow our rec-ommended jet combinations and start with thelowest level if you have an adjustable system. Itonly takes a few moments to change the jets sodont take unnecessary risks by starting at thehighest level.

Be realistic about how much power yourengine will handle. Dont get carried awayhere. Only you know exactly which compo-nents are in your engine. If you are unsure aboutthose components, you can call our tech line andone of our highly experienced tech personnel canhelp you to decide what is safe for your particu-lar combination. If you dont know whats insideyour engine, then you are most safe by assumingthat the components are factory stock and choosethe correct systemfor that application.

The power comes from fuel. The additional

power is set by the amount of additional fuelyour system supplies while the nitrous system isin operation. If the fuel isnt there, the powerwont be either and no amount of nitrous oranything else can bring it back.

There are two controls typically available tomanipulate the amount of fuel available duringsystem use; the fuel jet size and the fuel pres-sure. The correct fuel pressure is read while thesystem is flowing fuel. Some fuel pressure regu-lators give false readings because the pressurereading will creep up when the system is notactivated. When this happens, the actual flow-ing fuel pressure will be much lower thanexpected and can cause problems.

When problems with misfire or detonationare encountered, ALWAYS reduce the size of the nitrous jet first! Remember that the powercomes from the fuel, not the nitrous, so trying tocool things down by adding fuel simply addsmore power and complicates the problem.Carburetors jetted over-rich run cooler andrelease less power. Nitrous systems jetted over-rich will possibly just release more power, so if you run into problems, reduce the size of thenitrous jet(s) first.

When you check your spark plugs for signsof how your system is operating, CHECK EVERYSPARK PLUG, not just the easiest plug to get to.No two cylinders ever run exactly alike. Nitroushas the unique characteristic of cleaning thespark plugs very well and leave them lookinglike you just installed them. If there are any signsof detonation such as tiny silver or black specksdeposited on the porcelain, reduce the nitrous

jet size. If the ground strap of the spark plugexhibits a bluish-rainbow coloring, reduce thenitrous jet size. If the ground straps shows signsof melting, reduce the nitrous jet size andchange to a spark plug with a shorter and thick-er ground strap.

If your system suddenly begins to experi-ence problems even though you haventchanged anything, the culprit is most often aclogged nitrous or fuel filter. The instructionsthat come with your system contain informationabout where the nitrous and fuel filter screensare located. Check them periodically. NOS sys-tems are calibrated for optimum performancewith a bottle pressure of 900-950 psi. The pres-sure will change with temperature. NOS heaterkits are thermostatically controlled to keep thebottle near 85F to provide correct pressure.Kits available for the most popular-sized bottles,

with both 12-volt and 10-volt heaters offered. If you experience any problems you dont

understand or cant cure, dont hesitate to callour tech line. Were here to help you get themost from your NOS System.

Spark Plugs and N itrous O xide:W hat Works, W hat Doesnt, and W hy

Over the years there seems to have been agreat amount of technical material writtenabout the simple operation of a spark plug andwhat they can do in relation to the way anengine runs. There are a few basic characteris-tics about spark plugs that you need to know tomake an intelligent choice about the correctspark plug for your application.

First, and most important; a spark plugmust be of the correct design to operate within

the environment of your engine, not the otherway around. This means that the spark plughas virtually no influence on how the engineburns fuel or runs in general. The correct sparkplug will simply survive the conditions presentin your engine. A spark plug must maintain acertain temperature to keep itself clean. Thewrong heat range can cause an overheatedplug or a fouled plug. The heat range refers tothe temperature of the ceramic material sur-rounding the center electrode.

Lean air/ fuel ratios are more difficult tolight because there are less fuel molecules inthe area of the plug gap when the plug isscheduled to fire; thus, projected nose plugswere designed for late-model lean-burnengines. Modern high-energy ignition alsoallowed larger plug gaps. All the while thiswas happening, something else happened.Something that no one seems to have reallynoticed as the real culprit when the issue of fac-tory type plugs being used with nitrous comesup. Wed like to clue you in.

Quite often, a factory type, wide-gap pro- jected plug will produce a misfire conditionafter only a few seconds of nitrous use. Themisfire is not due to the heat range. The misfireoccurs because the ground strap of the sparkplug becomes a glowing ember because it istoo long to dissipate the extra heat producedby a nitrous-accelerated burn condition. Thecorrect fix for this phenomenon is to replacethe plugs with one that has a shorter groundstrap. By doing this, you will shorten the pathfor the heat being absorbed by the groundstrap. You can use the same heat range, you

just have to find a non-projected nose pluswith a shorter and preferably thicker groundstrap.

If you only change the heat range of thespark plug to a colder heat range, you mayvery well still have the misfire problem. Sincethe length of the ground strap is the cause of the misfire, a colder spark plug may have thesame length of ground strap as the hotter plugyou replaced it with.

Spark plug gaps should generally be .030"to .035". Never try to gap a plug designed foran .060" gap down to .035". Find the correctnon-projected nose plug designed for an.035" gap.

Q : W ill Nitrous affect engine reliability?A: The key is choosing the correct H.P. for a given

application. A kit that uses the correct factory cal-ibration does not usually cause increased wear.As the energy released in the cylinder increasesso do the loads on the various components thatmust handle them. If the load increases exceedthe ability of the components to handle them, added wear takes place. NOS kits are designedfor use on demand and only at wide open throt-tle. Nitrous can be extremely advantageous inthat it is only used when you want it, not all thetime. All NOS kits are designed for maximumpower with reliability for a given application.

Q: Can I simply bolt a nitrous kit onto my stockengine?

A: Yes. NOS manufactures systems for virtuallyany stock engine application. The key is tochoose the correct kit for a given application;i.e., 4 cyl. engines normally allow an extra 40-60 HP, 6 cyl. engines usually work great between75-100 extra HP, small block V8s(302/ 350/ 400cid) can typically accept up to140 extra HP, and big block V8s (427-454)might accept from125-200 extra HP. These sug-gested ranges provide maximumreliability frommost stock engines using cast pistons and castcrank with few or no engine modifications.

Q : W hat are some of the general rules foreven higher HP ga ins?

A: Generally, forged aluminumpistons are one of bestmodifications you can make. Retard ignition tim-ing by 4-8 degrees (1 to 1-1/ 2 degrees timingretard per 50 HP gain). In many cases a higherflowing fuel pump may be necessary. Higheroctane (100+) racing type fuel may be requiredas well as spark plugs 1 to 2 heat ranges colderthan normal with gaps closed to .025"-.030".For gains over 250 HP, other important modifi-cations could be necessary in addition to thosementioned above. These special modificationsmay include a forged crankshaft, a high qualityrace type connecting rods, a high output fuelpump dedicated to feeding the additional fueldemands of the nitrous system, and a racing fuelwith high specific gravity and an octane rating of 110 or more. For more specific informationabout your application, please contact the NOStechnical dept.

Q : How does nitrous work?A: Nitrous oxide is made up of 2 parts nitrogen and

one part oxygen (36% oxygen by weight).During the combustion process in an engine, atabout 572 degrees F, nitrous breaks down andreleases oxygen. This extra oxygen creates addi-tional power by allowing more fuel to be burned.

Nitrogen acts to buffer, or dampen the increasedcylinder pressures helping to control the combus-tion process. Nitrous also has a tremendousintercooling effect by reducing intake chargetemperatures by 60 to 75 degrees F.

    Q : W hat kind of testing or research is per-formed on N O S products?

A: NOS maintains a complete research and develop-ment center including computerized dynamome-ter equipment as well as a nitrous/ fuel flow test-ing facility. In addition, NOS is actively involved

Q : W here can I get my bottle refilled?A: Simply call 1-800-99-REFILL for the location of the near-

est NOS dealer with refilling capabilities.

Q : Is there any performance increase in usingmedical grade nitrous oxide?

A: None! NOS recommends and sells only the automotivegrade, called Ny-trous Plus. Ny-trous Plus contains aminimal amount of sulfur dioxide (100 ppm) as adeterrent to substance abuse. The additive does notaffect performance.

Q : Is it a good idea to use an aftermarket com-puter chip in conjunction with an N O SSystem?

A: Only if the chip has been designed specifically for usewith nitrous oxide. Most aftermarket chips use more

aggressive timing advance curves to create morepower. This can lead to possible detonation. You maywish to check with the manufacturer of the chip beforeusing it. The top manufacturers, such as Hypertech domake special chips for use with nitrous.

Q : How long does it generally take to install anNOS kit?

A: The majority of NOS kits can be installed using com-mon hand tools in approximately 4 to 6 hours. NOSinstruction manuals are by far the best in the industryand include specific installation drawings, wiring dia-grams, and bottle mounting procedures as well asperformance tips and a thorough trouble shootingguide.

Q : W hich type of m anifold is better suited for a pla teinjector type of nitrous system, single or dua lplane manifold?

A: As long as the manifold doesnt interfere with thespray pattern of the bars, either will work fine in mostcases. The distribution is better with a single plane athigh RPM. If your goal is to increase power by morethan 150 HP, the single plane manifold is better.

    Q : D o e s n i t r o u s o x i d e r a i se c y l i n d e r p r e s -sure a nd temperatures?

A: Yes. Due to the ability to burn more fuel, this is exactlywhynitrous makes so much power.

Q : Are there any benefits to chilling the nitrousbottle?

A: No. Chilling the bottle lowers the pressure dramati-cally and will also lower the flow rate of the nitrouscausing a fuel rich condition and reducing power. Oncold evenings you might run on the rich side. For opti-mal running conditions, keep bottle pressure atapproximately 900-950 psi. NOS has a nitrous pres-sure gauge that allows you to monitor this. If you liveor operate a nitrous systemin colder temperatures, i tmay also be a good idea to purchase a bottle heaterkit, part #14164. Generally, ambient temperatures of 80-90 degrees F will allow for best power potential of NOS kits.

in many aspects of racing; working closely withmany top name racers to develop the most pow-erful and reliable nitrous systems in the world.

Q : How much performance improvement can Iexpect with a nitrous system?

A: For many applications an improvement from 1to 3 full seconds and 10 to 15 MPH in the quar-ter mile can be expected. Factors such as enginesize, tires, jetting, gearing, etc. will affect the finalresults.

Q : How long w ill the bottle last?A: This largely depends on the type of nitrous kit and

jetting used. For example, a 125 HP Power Shotkit with a standard 10 lb. capacity bottle will usual-ly offer up to 7 to 10 full quarter-mile passes. Forpower levels of 250 HP, 3 to 5 full quarter-milepasses may be expected. If nitrous is only used in2nd and 3rd gears, the number of runs will bemore.

Q : How long can I hold the nitrous buttondown?

A: It is possible to hold the button down until the bottle isempty. However 15 continuous seconds at a time,or less, is recommended.

Q : W hen is the best time to use nitrous?A: At wide open throttle only (unless a progressive

controller is used). Due to the tremendous amountof increased torque, you will generally find bestresults, traction permitting, at early activation.Nitrous can be safely applied above 2,500 RPMunder full throttle conditions.

Q : Does NO S ma nufacture 50 -state legal nitroussystems?

A: Yes. In fact, NO S has several EO numbers forvarious kits such as the 5.0L Mustang and305/ 350 GM V8s, etc. In addition, there is noneed to remove any smog equipment wheninstalling an NOS system. For more informationcall the NOS tech line.

Q : W ill I have to re-jet my carbure tor onmy car w hen adding nitrous?

A: No! The NO S system is independent of yourcarburetor and injects its own mixture of fuel andnitrous.

Q : Is nitrous oxide flamma ble?A: No. Nitrous Oxide by itself is non-flammable.

However, the oxygen present in nitrous oxidecauses combustion of fuel to take place more rap-idly.

Q : W ill nitrous oxide cause detonation?A: Not directly. Detonation is the result of too little fuelpresentduring combustion (lean) or too low of anoctane of fuel. Too much ignition advance alsocauses detonation. In general, most of our kitsengineered for stock type engines will work wellwith premiumtype fuels and minimal decreasesof ignition timing. In racing application wherehigher compression ratios are used, resulting inhigher cylinder pressures, a higher fuel octanemust be used as well as more ignition retard.

Q : Are there benefits to using nitrous with turbo orsuper-charger applications?

A: Absolutely! In turbo applications, turbo lag is com-pletely eliminated with the addition of a nitrous sys-tem. In addition, both turbo and superchargers com-press the incoming air, thus heating it. With the injec-tion of nitrous, a tremendous intercooling effectreduces intake charge temperatures by 75 degrees ormore. Boost is usually increased as well, adding toeven more power.

Q : How complete is an N O S kit?A: NOS prides itself on offering the most complete sys-

temson the market today. They include virtually everycomponent that may be needed for a complete instal-lation; parts such as extra long carburetor studs, gas-

kets, pipe tap, fuel hose, brackets, filters, fittings, hardware, wiring, 10 lb. bottle with Hi-Flo valve, comprehensive instruction manual, and all othermajor components are standard in every NOS kit.

    Q : W hat is the difference between a standardand a n N O S Hi-Flo bottle valve?

A: The orifice of the Hi-Flo valve is much larger than thestandard valve allowing for a larger flow of nitrous. With a small orifice valve a pressure drop couldoccur when nitrous flow is high; causing surging orinadequate nitrous flow. The NOS Hi-Flo valve elimi-nates this problem. NOS Hi-Flo valves are standardin all NOS kits.

Q : W hat affect does nitrous have on a n enginewith considerable miles on it?

A: This depends largely on the actual condition of theengine components. Any performance modificationto an engine that is worn out or poorly tuned will

have detrimental effects. However, an engine ingood condition, with good ring and head gasketsealing, should be able to use nitrous without anyabnormal wear.

    Q : W il l the use o f n i t rous ox id e a ffe c t thecatalytic converter?

A : No. The increase in oxygen present in the exhaustmay actually increase the efficiency of the converter.Since the use of nitrous is normally limited to 10-20seconds of continuous use, there usually are noappreciable effects. Temperatures are typically wellwithin acceptable standards.

Q : W ill the percentage of pe rforma nce increase bethe same in a highly modified engine com-pared to a stock engine w hen using the sameN O S kit and jetting?

A: Not really. In most cases the percentage of increase isgreater from a stock engine because it is not as effi-

cient as the modified engine in a normal non-nitrousmode. However, since the effects of nitrous oxidemagnify the output of any engine, the total power out-put will be much higher in the modified engine.

Q : Can high compression engines utilizenitrous oxide?

A: Absolutely. High or low compression ratios can workquite suitably with nitrous oxide provided theproper balance of nitrous and fuel enrichment ismaintained. NOS kits are used in applicationsfrom relatively low compression stock type motorsto Pro-Modifieds, which often exceed 15 to 1.Generally, the higher the compression ratio, themore ignition retard, as well as higher octane fuel,is required. For more specific information talk toone of our technicians.

Q : Can service station fuel be used forstreet/ strip nitrous oxid e applications?

A: Yes. Use of a premiumtype leaded or unleaded fuelof 92, or greater, octane is recommended for mostapplications. Many NOS systems are designed foruse with service station pump gas. However, whenhigher compression or higher horsepower levelsare used, a racing fuel of 100 octane, or more, must be used.

Q : W hat type of cam is best suited for use with nitrousoxide?

A: Generally, cams that have less exhaust overlapand more exhaust duration. However, it is best tochoose a camtailored to normal use (when nitrousis not activated) since 99%of most vehicle opera-tions is not at full throttle. There are special camgrinds available for nitrous competition whichhave more aggressive exhaust profile ramping, etc. Since camselection depends largely on vehi-cle weight, gearing, etc., it is best to stick to cammanufacturers recommendations for your particu-lar goal.

Q : Are N O S kits app licable on late m odel EFIcars?A : Yes. In fact NOS has by far the most compre-

hensive selection of nitrous kits available for thesecars. Call for your specific application if you donot see it listed.

Q : W hat type of nitrous system is better; aplate injection system or a direct port injec-tion system?

A: The advantages of a plate systemare ease of instal-lation and removal, ability to transfer easily toanother vehicle, ability to change jetting combina-tions quickly, and in most cases, provide you withall the extra HP you will ever need (75 to 350more HP). In some cases, such as in-line typeengines with long runners, a direct port type sys-temis advisable for maximizing distribution. Also, where more than 350 HP is needed, our directport Fogger systems will provide the ultimate indistribution and power (up to 500+ HP). Directport injection is also desirable when the system ishidden under the manifold.

Q : Should I modify my fuel system to usenitrous oxide?

A: Most stock fuel pumps will work adequately forsmaller nitrous applications. It is important tocheck to see if your pump can flow enough fuel toyour existing fuel system (whether carburetor orfuel injected), as well as being able to supply theadditional fuel required by the nitrous kit under fullthrottle conditions. It may be a good idea to dedi-cate a separate fuel pump to the nitrous kit.

Q : W hich is the best position to mount anitrous bottle?

A: NOS bottles come with siphon tubes and, in order tomaintain proper nitrous pickup, it is important tomount the bottle correctly. We recommend mount-ing the bottle at a 15 degree angle with the valveend higher than the bottomof the bottle. The valveend of the bottle should point to the front of thevehicle and the valve knob and label should facestraight up.

Q : How impor tant is it to use nitrous and fuel filtersin a kit?

A: Some of the most important components of anynitrous systemare nitrous and fuel filters. To keepcontaminants fromattacking the solenoid or plug-ging up a jet, NOS nitrous filters feature a specialstainless steel mesh element from the aerospaceindustry.

Q : W hat are the adva ntages of using nitrouscompared to other perform ance options?

A: The cost of many other performance options canput you in the poorhouse. Dollar for dollar, youcant buy more performance with less money thannitrous. With a nitrous system, performance andreliability can be had for a much more reasonableprice while still retaining the advantage of a stockengine during normal driving. And, Nitrous offerstremendous gains in torque without having to rev theengine to excessive rpms. These factors help yourengine last longer than many other methods of boost-ing horsepower.

Q : Does N O S ma nufacture kits for mo torcycles,wa ter craft, or snowm obiles?

A: Absolutely. Call or write NOS to obtain our specialcatalog devoted specifically to these applications.Q : W hat kind of pressures are components

subject to in a typical nitrous kit?

A: Pressures often exceed 1,000 psi. This is why NOSuses onlyhigh pressure tested aircraft quality com-ponents like stainless steel braided Teflon linesthroughout its system.

Q : How do I know how much nitrous is left inthe bottle?

A: The most reliable method was is to weigh the bottle todetermine howmany pounds remain. When a bot-tle is near empty (about 20% or less nitrousremaining) a surging effect is normally felt.

Q : W hat is the function of the blow-off safetyvalve on the bottle?

A : It is very important not to overfill a bottle; i.e.,a 10 lb. capacity bottle should not be filled withmore than 10 lbs. of nitrous oxide by weight.Over-filling and/ or too much heat can causeexcessive bottle pressures forcing the safety seal toblow and releasing all the contents out of the bottle.

Q : W ill I have to change my ignition system?A: Most late model ignition systems are well suited for

nitrous applications. In some higher HP cases, it maybe advisable to look into a high quality high out-put ignition systemwith a built in spark retard.

SYSTEM REQ UIREM EN TS The stock fuel pump should be adequate, but it should be capable of meeting NEW pump specs. If unsure, replace. Use only premium grade pump gasoline(92+octane) or unleaded racing fuel. In many instances, a high-output ignition system and a free-flowing exhaust system may benefit performance.WARNING: DO N OT use aftermarket chips or other devices that advance ignition timing, as detonation may occur.

Actual performance gains will vary depending on the engines condition and configuration. The system can be used on an engine with stock rods, pistonsand crankshaft. However, at power levels of 140 and above, it is recommended that heavy-duty forged components be used.

THE BESTEN TRY-LEVELN ITRO US SYSTEM O NTHE M ARKET!

The engineers at NOS have hit a bulls-eye by designing the finest entry-levelnitrous system available today with theNOS Sniper kit. The Sniper is theeconomical entry-level kit from NOSthat simply blows away competitive kits.

The Sniper was developed to introduceenthusiasts to the use of nitrous at avery affordable price. This system is asafe and reliable street/ strip system thatfits all popular 4 bbl. applications

The Sniper is a fully adjustable system

that is designed to provide from 100-150 extra horsepower in popular 4 bblsquare bore or spread bore applica-tions. However, you can get more thanyou bargained for. In dyno tests con-ducted by Chevy High Performancemagazine the Sniper setup producedan extra 163 horsepower wheninstalled on a 355 CID small blockChevy with torque increased by anastounding 195 ft. lbs.

Sniper kits comes race ready right out-

of-the-box with all necessary compo-nents, including a distinctive brightorange 10 lb. bottle with the industrystandard industrial valve, adjustableplate with jets, solenoids, plus allrequired lines, hoses, fittings, clampsand a detailed instruction sheet to makeinstallation simple.

SYSTEM REQU IREM ENTS To properly supply the carburetor and the Sniper System, use a fuel pump designed

to operate between 4.5 and 7 psi with a flow rate of 0.1 gallons per horsepower at 6psi. For example, an engine that produces 350 horsepower when the Sniper Systemis activated will require a fuel pump that flows at least 35 gallons per hour at 6 psi.*Actual performance gains will vary depending on the engines condition and configura-tion. The system can be used on an engine with stock rods, pistons and crank. However,at power levels of 140 and above it is recommended that heavy-duty forged componentsbe used.

RECOM M EN DED O PTION AL ACCESSO RIES

To obtain optimum performance from a Sniper system it is highly recommend to mon-itor both fuel pressure and nitrous pressure using NOS gauges. Maintaining a consis-tent bottle temperature is also beneficial. Use an NOS thermostatically controlledheater, or a bottle blanket. Check out the accessories elsewhere in this catalog.
