    ANTIQUES NEWSLETTER

    NOVEMBER 2012

    VOL. TWO ISSUE 11

THANKFULNESSI usually dont open our monthly newsletter with something that Ive not written myself, but I cameacross this entry the other day and felt it was ever so fitting for our nation on this Thanksgiving Da

albeit 72 years after it was written. Ill let you read the entry and at the end, Ill give proper credento its original author.

In a year which has seen calamity and sorrow fall upon many peoples elsewhere i n the world maygive thanks for our preservation? On the same day, in the same hour, let us pray:

Almighty God, who hast given us this good land for our heritage; We humbly beseech Thee that we

may always prove ourselves a people mindful of Thy favor and glad to do Thy will. Bless our land

honourable industry, sound learning, and pure manners.

Save us from violence, discord, and confusion; from pride and arrogancy, and from every evil way.

Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people the multitudes brought hither out of many

kindreds and tongues. Endue with the spirit of wisdom those to whom in Thy Name we entrust the

authority of government, that there may be justice and peace at home, and that, through obedience

Thy law, we may show forth Thy praise among the nations of the earth. In the time of prosperity, fi

our hearts with thankfulness, and in the day of trouble, suffer not our trust in Thee to fail; Amen.

President Franklin D. Roosevelts Thanksgiving Day Proclamation November 9. 1940.

I believe these words still ring true today. Peace, thoughtfulness, justice and above all thankfulness

each of us can learn from the wisdom of those who came before us. Blessings to youHappyThanksgiving!

We are proud to announce the grand opening of our

sister store, Nostalgia! Located in downtown

Parkersburg, it is ideally placed at 810 Market Street.

Closely adjacent to the Juliann Historic District, it is

    conveniently accessible from all directions.

Our friends at Nostalgia are transforming its locale

restoring the brick and mortar to its original glory. Theiropening day will be the first day of December, just in time

    for your holiday shopping.

The entire store will be stocked to the hilt with all sorts of

festive finery, holiday attire and plenty of sparkling blingto go around. Theyll also have primitive items for those

of you who love a rustic feel.

Nostalgia will be a place where you can shop for unusual

and unique antiques, artwork, artisan-made crafts, and

more! Their vendors have been hand-picked and willsupply a wide variety of the most sought after antiques in

    todays market.

Mark your calendars for December 1stat 10am. Theyre

decking the halls at this very moment. Expect holiday

    vintagery at its finest.

Clean an antique tin item with denatured

alcohol and a piece of fine steel wool. Youcan also use this to clean copper as well.

Dont be afraid to use staples to re-upholsterantique furniture. The staple only leaves two

small holes and is quick and easy to use, butdont overdo it.

Remove old rocking chair legs and rockerswith a dead blow hammer. If the joints are

stubborn, use a little vinegar on the joints.

Use lemon juice to remove sticky residuefrom antique furniture. The lemon juice is a

natural, safe way to remove the adhesive.

    Cheers for now!

Close your eyesbreathe deep...let your mind wander to another time, anotherplace. Imagine yourself standing in the kitchen of an early American home.

Youre enticed by the scents of a well-planned and carefully preparedThanksgiving dinner wafting through the air.

The sweet and savory smells envelop you as the fire swirls the warm, rich air

throughout the room. In one corner, the stove is covered with pots full ofsimmering vegetables. Sweet potatoes covered in brown sugar and honey. Greand onions slowly brought to their flavor peak with tiny chunks of ham. Corn squash slathered with butter. Each vessel holds the riches of the earth enhance

only by the seasonings added to each dish.

As you peek in the hearth, it almost takes your breath awaythe turkey. Thegolden brown beauty is ready to be pulled from the spit and placed on the plattready to become the centerpiece of the harvest table.

As you turn to the center of the room, the table fills the space with a welcoming

beckon. Large and heavy, it shows years of faithful use. Today its covered wfruits and nuts atop a layer of the forests bounty. Pine cones, cranberries, acorcolorful leaves and ground pine trail along the center of the table. Handmadebreads and desserts complete the tablescape.

Dinner is ready and the temptation is overwhelming. You take a step toward th

table to take a seat. Welcome to the harvest table.
