NORTHWESTERN MEN’S SOCCER

Head Coach Tim LenahanTim

Lenahan is in hisfifth season ashead men’s soc-cer coach forNorthwesternUniversity.

WhenLenahan arrivedin Evanston, Ill.,prior to the2001 season, hisgoal was simple, yet ambitious. He looked to take aprogram that hadn’t won a singlegame the year before his arrival, andbuild it into a perennially competitiveprogram.

After four seasons with theWildcats, he has achieved that goaland more.

Upon his arrival, Lenahan, a two-time national coach of the year final-ist, began compiling outstandingrecruitingclasses that are largelyresponsible for the team’s recent suc-cess, and coached the team to theirfirst .500-season since 1988.

Last season, Lenahan led the‘Cats into the national spotlight withone of college soccer’s most remark-able turnarounds. His team finishedwith 15-6-2-the program’s most winsover Division I opponents-made theBig Ten Tournament championshipmatch and NCAA Tournament for thefirst time. The Wildcats’ third placeBig Ten finish was the best in pro-gram history, and Northwestern wasincluded in national ranking for thefirst time, finishing No. 17 accordingto the College Soccer News poll.

For his efforts, Lenahan wasnamed the NSCAA Great LakesRegion Coach of the Year, his secondRegional Coach of the Year honor. Healso landed sophomore GerardoAlvarez (first team) and junior BradNapper (third team) on the all-Regionsquad-the Wildcats’ first such acco-lades in program history.

Lenahan came to Northwesternfrom Lafayette College, where hesolidified his reputation as a builder ofprograms-in just three seasons, histeams won two Patriot League regu-lar- season titles, two postseasoncrowns and made a pair of NCAATournament appearances.

After 15 seasons of coaching, and only five with Northwestern, notonly has Lenahan’s reputation beencemented, but he has proven himselfto be one of the premier collegecoaches in the game today.

Experience on the PitchThis season, Northwestern returns everystarter and 24 letterwinners from the 2004squad that had the best season in pro-gram history.

A Hermann for Gerardo? The NSCAA announced that junior for-ward Gerardo Alvarez is on the 2005Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophywatch list. The award is presented annual-ly to the most outstanding collegiate soc-cer player, and is considered the mostprestigious individual honor in collegiatesoccer. The list includes 25 players fromaround the country, including four selec-tions-Alvarez, Jacob Peterson (IU), BrianPlotkin (IU) and Jed Zayner-from the BigTen. Alvarez is the first player inNorthwestern soccer history to be nomi-nated for the award. A list of 15 semifinal-ists will be announced in November, withthree finalists selected in early December.Alvarez was also named a200 5 third-teampreseason all-american by collegesoccernews.com.

Super SeniorsThe class of 2006 is the first full recruitingclass compiled by head coach TimLenahan. The group has played an integralrole in the program’s turnaround. Thegroup includes Eric Brin, Dan Carew, KevinEarnest, Brad Napper, Jaro Pylypczak,Alexander Renzi, Sammy Semwangu,Adam Sirois, Dave Vargas and ChrisZdenek.

Freshman PhenomMidfielder David Roth had a freshman sea-son to remember in 2004. Roth set theNorthwestern and Big Ten records forassists in a season with 14. He earned All-America honors from Topdrawersoccer.comand Collegesoccernews.com. If not forRoth’s 14, teammate Gerardo Alvarezwould have broken the Northwestern’ssingle-season assist record with nine.

A Broken RecordAs just a junior, Gerardo Alvarez is fourassists, nine goals and 22 points shy of set-ting Northwestern career records in allthree categories. Over his first two sea-sons, Alvarez is averaging eight assists,10.5 goals and 29 points per year.

On Top of the Big TenIn 2004, the Wildcats were tops in the BigTen in goals (52), assists (55) and points(159).

Consecutive CrownsWith the Wildcats’ 2-1 win over WesternKentucky and their 1-0 win over St. Francis(Pa.) last weekend, Northwestern claimedits second consecutive Lakeside Classictitle. In addition back-to-back tournamentcrowns, the way in which the ’Cats wonwas starkly similar to last year’s run. Lastyear, Northwestern beat UW-Green Bay 4-1, then beat Butler in a double-overtimethriller, 2-1.In the 2005 tournament, the Wildcatstopped Western Kentucky 2-1, and againwent to double overtime in the secondmatch. This year, senior Kevin Earnestcame through with the match-winner inthe 102nd minute give the ’Cats a 1-0 vic-tory over St. Francis (Pa.).The Lakeside Classic All-Tournamentincluded the following players: KevinEarnest (NU), Steven Medlock (WKU),Justin McGrane (NIU), Richard Mupfudze(WKU), Brad North (NU), Bobby Pipech(St.F), David Roth (NU), Jeremy Tice (St.F),Kevin Woerner (NIU) and Curt Zastrow(NIU). The Wildcats’ own senior defenderBrad Napper was voted tournament MostValuable Player.

Seriously SiroisFollowing the Lakeside Classic, topdrawer-soccer.com highlighted the play of seniordefender Adam Sirois. He was named TopDrawer Soccer Big Ten ConferencePerformer of the Week for the defenderposition.

Fightin’ FreshmenTwo of Northwestern’s six freshmen gottheir first taste of Division I soccer whenthey logged significant minutes en routeto the Lakeside Classic title. MidfielderTyler Voigt—who was selected as a college-soccernews.com freshman to keep an eyeon— came off the bench in both games.Goaltender Misha Rosenthal made thestart at goalkeeper for both of last week-end’s matches. He recorded his first colle-giate save off a rebound shot from 12yards out against Western Kentucky. Hestopped two of the three Hilltopper shots-on-goal, and logged all 90 minutes in the

NU NOTES...cage. He followed up his impressive debutby recording his first career shutout againstSt. Francis (Pa.), holding the Red Flashscoreless for 102:25 minutes.

Big Time DominanceCollegesoccernews.com has selected the BigTen Conference as the second-toughestmen’s soccer conference in the country, only the Atlantic Coast Conference wasranked higher. The story read that the “level of parity thatcurrently exists in the league is unbeliev-able.” The Big Ten sent six teams (Indiana,Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern,Ohio State and Penn State) to the 2004NCAA Tournament, the most of any con-ference in the country.

First-Time FoesAfter the UNLV Invitational, the Wildcatshave faced four consecutive opponents forthe first in school history. Matches with St.Francis (Pa.), UC Santa Barbara, UNLV andWestern Kentucky have all been first timemeetings. The ’Cat are 2-0 against theseunfamiliar opponents with wins over St.Francis (Pa.) and Western Kentucky.

’Cat’s in the Big TenAlthough the season is young, the Wildcatsare at or near the top of the Big Ten in sev-eral categories. Northwestern leads the BigTen in corners (24), is tied for fourth insaves (12) and goals (5). Individually, BradNorth is tied for fourth in total shots (11)and goals (2).
