At this price Mayo is now the second most expensive place in the west to buy such a property, ranking behind Galway where the cost averages 200,000 (city) and 170,000 (country) (Myhome.ie). According to the same Report the average price of a similar property in Sligo is 112,250 and 70,000 in Roscommon. Prices in Dublin are stagnant at present. The biggest falls in availability are now occurring outside Leinster. Across Munster, Connacht and Ulster, there were 13,500 homes for sale in April 2016, compared to almost 21,000 two years previously (Daft.ie). Étáin, a 17-year-old talentedsinger/songwriter and multi-in-strumentalist from Fivemile-bourne, Leitrim, has beenchosen as the winner of thisyear's Young Songwriter's Award, which was held in The ModelSligo on March 25. Etain’s musi-cal influences are The RollingStones, Joni Mitchell, Kate Bushand the 70's punk movement.

"Her lyrics, melodies andwork commitment floored me.As a scout I’ve never met a 16year old like her... This is a veryspecial artist." - Ed Darragh, keyboardist and producer of ex-RTE series 'Nighthawks'.

"A joy to listen to." - JasonCoulter, Managing Editor, PureM Music Magazine.

Étáin has gigged extensivelyacross Ireland and Britain with a

first performance of her track 'AFaint Sense of Heaven' in TheCavern Club, Liverpool.

She also graced the samestage as Moya Brennan of Clan-nad in Leo's Tavern Donegal. With upcoming performancesnationwide she has received re-

gional, national and interna-tional airplay. Following recenttelevision appearances, Étáinhas recorded her latest tracksin Westland Studios, due for re-lease this year. A bright futureseems to be in the pipeline forthis young Leitrim girl.

According to James Spring,REA Peter Donoghue inCarrigallen: “Investor interesthas risen due to lack of rentalproperties and increasedrents. Stock is dwindling andwe expect prices to continueto rise.”

Naturally, one wouldexpect an uplift in priceswould begin to make it moreattractive for theconstruction industry to startbuilding. However, with thecurrent mortgage restrictionsand the reluctance of somany to invest in theproperty market again, thefuture for the sector is stilluncertain.

HUNDREDS flocked to Banagher’sCommunity/Resource Centre on 2nd

April for an historic occasion – themuch-awaited launch of a book publishedby popular local man, Donal McCormack.

“The Road to Downpatrick”encompasses a life-time of localknowledge accumulated over many

decades by a modest 87-year-old whofeared that much of what he knew andloved about his local area would be lostto future generations if he didn’t put ittogether in book form.

However, as he admitted himself, though he started the project seven yearsago (at the age of 80), it might have been

shelved for good but for the advent of theWild Atlantic Way and the Monasteries onthe Moy Greenway. A large section of thebook traces a path along the Moy estuarybetween Ballina and Killala, the routeenvisaged for the Greenway. It moves onto Downpatrick, one of the signature sitesalong the designated route.

Launching the book, another man ofknowledge and local friend, ProfessorSeamus Caulfield, described the book as awonderful product, a work of art, beautifully crafted and designed. He saidit was ironic that somebody like Donal isregarded in some official circles as part ofdemographic which is a burden on society. What he has produced should serve as awake-up call.

Donal McCormick thanked his wife, family and all those who helped in thecompilation and production of the book.He urged people to look around andappreciate the beauty of north Mayo, thehistory, folkore, flora and fauna, birdlife, the landscape and all the other wonderfulfeatures. Most important, resourcesshould be applied to tap into thesignificant tourist potential of what wehave.

The new publication is an idealhandbook for anybody travelling on thissection of the Wid Atlantic Way or theNew Greenway.

Donal’s book, “The Road toDownpatrick” is available in all goodnewsagents and bookshops in North Mayo(Ballina, Killala, Crossmolina, etc.) and isa treasure trove of information foranybody exploring this beautiful part ofthe county.

Passing on the legacy: Donal McCormick pictured with some his grandchildren atthe launch of his book, “The Road to Downpatrick – a never forgotten journey” inBanagher on 2nd April.

Launch of “Road to Downpatrick”– a never forgotten visit

TWO students from GMITwere overall winners inthe final of the Intel

Galileo 3rd Level Technologycompetition which took placeat the Science Gallery inDublin. The competition, whichhas been running since thebeginning of January, is open toall 3rd level undergraduatestudents on the island ofIreland.Eight finalists were vying forthe top positions, with TechSmart Home, by David Walshe, and G-Tune by Collin Gill (bothGMIT) adjudged worthywinners, while another GMITstudent, Ronan Watkins, withhis Bluetooth and Wi-ficontrolled data gathering car,

was also a finaistl in thecompetition. The competition was judged byrepresentatives from Intel whoselected two projects asoverall winners such was thehigh standard of thecompetition. The competitioninvites students to createprojects based on the Irishdesigned Intel Galileo board. The Intel® Galileo board is thefirst in a family of Arduino*-certified development andprototyping boards based onIntel architecture andspecifically designed formakers, students, educators, and DIY electronics enthusiasts. The collaboration with Arduinosought to inspire creativity,

learning and invention withMakers and Students anddevelopment kits and softwareprogramming interface thatmake it easier for artists, designers and other do-it-yourself enthusiasts – whooften don’t have technicalbackgrounds – to createinteractive objects orenvironments. The following provides anoutline of the winning Mayoprojects:

G-Tune by Collin Gill, GMITThis project is an automatictuner for guitarists. It works bysampling incoming pluckedstrings, running a fast fouriertransform, finding thefundamental of the sampledwaveform and uses that data toturn motors (via PWM) in thecorrect direction. Once theappropriate pitch is achievedthe motors stop. A user will use

an app to communicate backand forth with Galileo. The appwill allow user to select whatstring he/she would like totune and also what pitchhe/she wants to tune too.

Tech Smart Home by DavidWalshe, GMITThe goal is to automate thecontrol of many aspects of thehome, including heating, lighting and security systems, and to give an interactive userexperience. At the heart of thisproject is the Intel Galileo Gen2 which runs a webserver givingthe user full control of theirhome. The Galileocommunicates with manysubsystems using I2C, eachcontrolling a separate featureof the home.

Ronan Watkins’ DataGathering car can becontrolled by a website or anAndroid app. The smartphonehas control over themovements of the car, with theintegrated accelerometer onthe phone being used tocontrol the steering of the carwhich uses a servo motor formore precise steering than aDC motor. The Galileo sendsdata from a temperaturesensor, ultrasonic sensor andlight dependent resistor to thesmartphone and website andthe user can then commandthe Galileo to post this data toTwitter. The car has a cameraattached to it which streams tothe website and can beinstructed by the user to takepictures and save them to theSD card located on the Galileoand post them to Twitter.Congratulations to the GMITstudents on their successes.

It will also givethe visitor a great reason tolinger longer in Sligo and thewider area. Sligo is ideallyplaced along the Wild AtlanticWay for visitors to enjoy themagnificent scenery and coastalexperiences combined with theexciting food offerings whichSligo Food Trail provides”.

Speaking at the launch AoifeCarrigy talked about her ownSligo connections – her parentslived in Sligo back in the 1960s,and said “Sligo is slowlyrevealing its secrets to me. Thecounty has a growing foodreputation, much of this due tothe wonderful food

ambassadors who work hard tobuild that reputation”. Shespoke of the positiveimpressions made when she wasa Foodie Towns judge and said,“Sligo has the confidence, depth and integrity to succeed, confident that it is OK to betrue to its roots andsimultaneously modern andcontemporary. The link in allthe food offerings and foodexperiences is the stylishnessand the remarkable energycoming from all involved”. Sheconcluded by saying it was nowonder people in Sligo havebeen eating well for 5,000years! During Aoife Carrigy’sspeech, the wonderful newSligo Food Trail video was shownand was received withrapturous applause. Cyclist Fined For Riding To HeathrowOn M25

The teenage daughter of Fast &Furious actor Paul Walker hasbeen awarded a $10.1m(£7.15m) settlement from theestate of the man who wasbehind the wheel of the Porschein which both men died.Walker was a passenger in thePorsche Carrera GT driven by hisfriend Roger Rodas when thevehicle, travelling between 80-93mph, crashed into trees andburst into flames in SantaClarita, northwest of LosAngeles, in November 2013.Meadow Walker's attorney, JeffMilam, said in a statement thatthe settlement would go into atrust for the 17-year-old.

"The amount paid by theestate of Roger Rodas into atrust for Meadow Walker onlycovers a fraction of what herfather would have earned as aninternational movie star had hislife not tragically been cutshort," Mr Milam said.

According to Mr Milam'sstatement, Mr Rodas was onlypartially responsible for thecrash.

The settlement was reached inNovember 2014 but remainedundisclosed until now.

Mr Milam said his client wascontinuing her lawsuit againstPorsche AG and that she "intendsto hold the company responsiblefor producing a vehicle that wasdefective and caused PaulWalker's death".

Meadow, the actor's only childand sole heir, filed the complaintagainst the German carmakerlast September, accusing it ofskimping on safety features thatcould have prevented the crashor at least kept him alive.

Porsche has maintained thatthe actor was responsible for hisown death.

After a four-monthinvestigation, Los Angelesofficials said the crash was

caused by excessive speed, notmechanical failure.

Mr Milam said Walker survivedthe impact of the crash, but"burned to death because ofPorsche's defective design".

A federal judge presiding overa similar lawsuit filed by Mr

Rodas' estate against Porscheruled in favour of the carcompany on Monday, saying:"The plaintiff has provided nocompetent evidence that Rodas'death occurred as a result of anywrongdoing on the part ofdefendant."

The pair made history on 17December 1903 when theycarried out the first

controlled powered humanflight.

The patent file for the Wrightbrothers' 'flying machine' -missing since 1980 - has beendiscovered in a limestone cave.

A cold case team from the USNational Archives recentlyramped up its efforts to find themissing paperwork.

Record keepers realised thefile was missing from the mainWashington DC vault in 2000, anddiscovered that it had beenpotentially mislaid as far back as

1980.But volunteer archivist Bob

Beebe has now found it hiddenamong a 15ft-high stack ofdocuments in a special recordsstorage cave in Kansas.

The patent papers bear thenames of Orville and WilburWright and the words 'flyingmachine', the world's firstsuccessful plane.

The pair made history on 17December 1903 when theycarried out the first controlledpowered human flight.

They filed the patent - whichcovers the machine's design andcontrols - nine months beforetheir device even got off theground, and it was granted in1906.

It reads: "Be it known that weOrville Wright and Wilbur Wright, both citizens of the UnitedStates, residing in the city ofDayton and state of Ohio, have

jointly invented a new and usefulmachine for navigating the air."

The flight lasted just 12seconds and covered 37 metres -but it was a huge step forwardfor mankind.

National Archives boss WilliamJ Bosanko said: "If somebodyputs something back in thewrong place, it's essentially lost.

"In this case, we didn't know.We had to ask ourselves: 'Is itsomething that could have beenstolen?'" The patent will go ondisplay at the National ArchivesMuseum in Washington DC laterthis month.

A number of key documentsare missing from the NationalArchives - including the patentfor Eli Whitney's cotton gin, photos from the Moon, andletters penned by AbrahamLincoln. Some are presumedstolen, while others were likelymislaid.

CCTV footage has emerged of awoman stealing a wedding ringfrom the finger of a femalecorpse at a funeral home inTexas. The dead woman, 88-year-oldLois Hicks, was lying in an opencasket at Sunset Funeral Home inOdessa.

Her daughter, Vel McKee, toldOdessa American online thatsome of the skin on her mother’sfinger had been torn off duringthe theft.

“I can’t believe someone wouldbe that low,” Ms McKee said.

“It makes me sick to mystomach.

“Horrible. I hope they catchher.” Ms Hicks’ granddaughter,Brandi Carrasco, told News West9: "To go in and do that tosomeone is deplorable.

"We want our family jewelleryback.

"My grandmother's finger wasred," she added.

The funeral home’s generalmanager, Bill Vallie, said videoshowed the thief parking herfour-door Saturn car, getting outand entering the building.

The vehicle’s licence plate canbe seen in the video.

Ms Hicks’ loved ones had leftshortly before, at around

5:30pm.The woman asked where the

toilets were but entered theroom containing Ms Hicks’ coffininstead.

“You can’t restrict anyone,” MrVallie said.

A cyclist who was trying to get to Heathrowairport by riding along the hardshoulder ofthe M25 has been handed an on-the-spot fineby police.

The rider, who appeared to be dressed in awhite top and black trousers, was caughtpedalling along the busy stretch of motorwayon Thursday morning.

The person was seen on cameras in heavymorning traffic in the clockwise directionnear junctions 12 and 13.

He did not reach his destination, though,he was escorted off the motorway by SurreyPolice.

The police tweeted: "A cyclist has just re-ceived an on-the-spot fine after being caughtcycling on the M25 trying to get toHeathrow", which has since been retweetedand favourited dozens of times.

Riding a bike on the motorway is illegal inthe UK, and the Heathrow section of the M25is one of the busiest stretches in Europe.

Last year, a Bulgarian cyclist was escortedoff the M1 by police. He was attempting toride to London after arriving on a flight atLuton Airport.

Michael Banks thought he had dreamt up theperfect way to propose to his girlfriend. The 27-year-old climbed 600 feet up MorroRock in California, so that with the volcanicoutcrop as a dramatic backdrop, he could popthe question on his computer via the Face-time App.The good news was that she said yes, but thebad news was he got stuck and had to be res-cued from the mountainside by helicopter.Morro Bay fire captain Todd Gailey said MrBanks took a different, much steeper, traildown the cliff and became stranded."He couldn't go any direction, on a sheerledge, with his feet dangling 80 feet off theground," he said.Captain Gailey was lowered by cable from ahelicopter to hoist Mr Banks from the narrowledge, with the rotors spinning near the cliff, and ocean spray battering both men.Mr Banks appeared calm throughout the res-cue, but also "a little unnerved", said CaptainGailey.Climbing Morro Rock, which is on California'sCentral Coast, is banned, but some peoplestill tackle it, and there have been severalfatal falls over the years.Local media said Mr Banks had been cited fortrespassing, and he is expected to be chargedfor the helicopter ride.It is unclear if Mr Banks had any secondthoughts about making the proposal from themountainside, but Captain Gailey said othersshould consider a place "where you're not indanger of falling off a cliff".

DecoratingWith Pillows & Throws

Layering on finishing touches like throw pillows and blankets is an important element in any space. But just how you layer can depend on the style of your room, the look you’regoing for, the piece of furniture you’re working with, and even how you live. Here’s my best advice for styling with soft accents.

Neatly fold your fancier throws. Just likepillow styling, choosing how to style throwsreally depends on the look of your room. Inmy mind, a handsome formal space, like thisone, deserves an elegant throw, and anelegant throw looks best displayed neatly. Here, a crisp fold highlights the refinedbeauty of Hermes’ Avalon blanket.

and casually toss everyday ones. I personallylove the laissez-faire feel of a perfectly“unstyled” bed or sofa, with a natural pillowarrangement and casually tossed throw. It’s theperfect way to lend an easygoing vibe to a moreformal room. (That being said, I also appreciatefluffed pillows and a perfectly folded throw! Letthe feel of your space be your guide.)

If you’d love amountain ofpillows, go for it!Using a numberof differentpatterns, colorsand pillow sizes isan easy way toadd energy to aspace, and it’s agreat option forthose who don’tmind rearrangingtheir setup fromtime to time. Insenior editorSally Armstrong’sliving room, theoverall look isplayful, but stillsophisticated, since all thetextiles work welltogether

Not into excess?Add a singlestatement pillow.Adding one greatthrow pillow letsthe shape of thissofa sing, whileadding just a dashof decoration. Itslong, lumbar-style shape alsooffers welcomeback support, andis a great optionfor those thatdon’t naturallygravitate towardcushions (behonest withyourself if theidea of stylingthem everydayseems likework!).

Embrace matching pairs fora balanced look. This is afoolproof way of stylingpillows on a sofa or settee. The piece is left mostly barefor an understated effect, while a simple pair ofcushions on either endcreates a calming sense ofsymmetry. This approach isideal for rooms that alreadyhave a lot of other visualinterest, like eye-catchingdrapery or statement art.

or go unmatched for a laid-back feel. Bringing in two different styles of throw pillows keeps things varied, but still cohesive.Another version of the off-kilter approach is arranging two or three pillows on just one side of your sofa (draping a throw over thearm on the no-pillow side will add a little balance).

Take a pared-back approach in cleanerrooms. When decorating contemporary, sparely decorated rooms — or ones that arefilled with iconic furniture — be careful notto over-embellish with pillows and throws.Taking a lighter hand will let the beautifullines of these spaces shine, as thisdeliberately undecorated roomdemonstrates

10 Family-Friendly Living Rooms You’ll Want To Hang Out In

Living rooms are undeniably a hub of the home but often present a conundrum: How do you make them comfy enough for family movie nights but also suitable for entertainingguests? There is a way! The trick to letting living rooms do double duty is striking a balance between playful and serious, while toning down more formal pieces with color andlaid-back styling. Culled from our archives, here is some inspiration for striking that balance between cozy and comfortable, without sacrificing style.

Hardworking floors, big comfy sofas and movable coffeetables are all key components to a family-friendly livingroom. The punches of bold color scattered throughoutbrighten up the dark furniture and windows, too.

While the shape of the couch is fairly mod, its color isfresh and funky. The pops of pink are not only youthfuland vivid but the bold rug layered on top of herringboneflooring takes the formality down.

Floor pillows bring approachable and flexible seating toan otherwise formal mid-century inspired place. Thebaby blue sheepskin rug helps tone down any lingeringformal atmosphere, too!

Proving white doesn’t mean stark, this living room drawson artistic accents to liven up the room. The patternedrug clearly lends itself well to playtime, yet if youreplace the toys with a coffee table it’s ready forcocktail hour.

The chaise and chair in this kid-friendly space are playfuland also good camouflage for rogue markers orpaintbrushes. Instead of hiding toys away, the wall ofbookshelves lets them take center stage and adds somevisual interest to the white walls.

Inspired by eclectic British decor, this living room keepsthings light with an array of bohemian textiles andpatterns and an artfully cluttered mantel featuring artand knickknacks in unexpected places.

Durable concrete floors mean kids (and parents!)can create a mess without worrying aboutdamaging precious flooring. The sliding glass wallwith its dark frames allows for a graphic punch.

This extra-deep wrap-around sofa makesmovie nights all the more comfortable. The playful mix of patterns andabundance of cushions means it can bemussed up or moved around withoutlooking undone.

This Muskoka cottage living room is allabout easy breezy waterfront living. Themuted color palette and weatheredsurfaces combine to create an invitingand relaxing space — perfect for crashingafter a day at the beach.

This living room is youthful thanks tolow-hanging art and the omission offloor-to-ceiling drapes.

Social AreasYes, kitchens are certainly gettingbigger with many homeownerschoosing to extend their homesand knock down walls for largerairier kitchens. My own home atone point had a door into thekitchen at the back of the housebut that wall was removed and amuch larger open throughway nowcreates an area that leads rightinto the dining room – it makesthe whole space feel much moresociable and relaxed. Not only that but we see a lot ofpeople using islands or even slimbar areas where you can bothprepare your meals and socialisewith guests or family at the sametime. I think 2015 will be a yearwhere we see even more of this, with homeowners opting for open, sociable spaces, combining

functionality with style andpracticality, even in smallerkitchen spaces.Natural coloursGreys, whites, soft creams andblack are the big colours ininteriors right now and kitchensare adopting this palette withaplomb. These on-trend neutralscreate a fantastic basis for addingother hits of colours in ouraccessories or keeping the entirearea beautifully in keeping withthe rest of our home. The kitchen design becomes partof the greater whole of our stylesand can be as eclectic, traditional, retro or contemporaryas any other part of our home.

Natural materialsThere’s also a return to nature inour kitchens with marble and

concrete worktops, pale and lightwood cabinets and slate flooringall popular choices. They alsocombine beautifully with man-made materials. Gloss cabinetdesigns are still popular but are

softened when used withbeautiful organic finishes. We’re also seeing more elegantlydesigned utilitarian kitchenaccessories with a return tonatural wood chopping boards, marble rolling pins, wood utensilsand handmade ceramics.Everything is relaxed butbeautifully practical.

Open displaysThe look of open shelving may notbe for everyone but there’scertainly an increase in peoplewanting to show off theirprettiest plates, serving dishesand glassware as well asdecanting dry goods intofashionable clip jars eithercompletely out in the open orbehind glass. Allowing for bothopen and closed storage allowsthe homeowner to show off theirpersonality and style. Justremember to keep things tidy!

Warm metalsThe surge in popularity of warmmetals in our homes has certainly

not bypassed the kitchen.Homeowners are warming up thehub of their homes with bronze, copper and brass in everythingfrom lighting to taps and cupboardhandles.

Linear LinesIn more contemporary designs,we’re seeing cupboard handlesdisappear altogether along withhidden gadgets like extension fansthat rise from worktops and plugsockets that disappear intoislands. Appliances blend rightinto the cabinetry of the kitchen, hidden behind doors to create aseamless look.So if you are considering a full

kitchen renovation this year, whattrends do you think you’ll belooking at for your own kitchen?I’d love to hear from you.

Juicing isnothing newbut this new

craze of superjuicing and rawfoodies has

recently become increasinglypopular. So what is juicing? Inessence, Juicing is simply removingthe juice from whole fruits andvegetables. The fibre is broken

down in the fruit and vegetablesensuring that a rich supply ofnutrients, anti-oxidants,phytonutrients, vitamins andminerals are more easily absorbedby the body. Juicing can reduceyour risk of cancer, boost yourimmune system, remove toxinsfrom the body, aids digestion andhelps with weight loss.

Virtually every health authorityrecommends that we get 6-8servings of vegetables and fruitsper day and very few of us actually

get that. Juicing isan easy way toguarantee that youwill reach yourdaily target.Juicing providesversatility in fruitand vegetablesbecause it helpspeople enjoy fruitsand vegetablesthey might notusually enjoy intheir whole form.It can also balancethe pH in ourbodies, and inturn, help toprotect us fromconditions relatedto acidicimbalances, including heart andkidney disease anddiabetes.

When startingout with juicing Iwould recommenda mid ranged pricejuicer. Start byjuicing vegetables

and fruits you really enjoy. Juicesshould taste pleasant. Beadventurous with flavourcombinations. I do not recommenda juicing-only weight loss planbecause the lack of fibre andprotein in juices often leaves ufeeling hungry. Add juices to yournormal daily food plan formaximum nutrient intake andhealth benefits. You’re getting amassive dose of essential vitamins(A, C, E) and minerals (zinc, potassium, iron, calcium) by

including a vibrant juice in yourdaily diet. It might just be enoughto put that extra pep in your step!

Juicing for HealthSweet Green goodnessIngredientsHalf a Pineapple, 2 handfuls of spinach1 cucumberJuice your ingredientsthrough your juicer and addice to make a refreshingsweet juice packed withnutrients!
