As a former Science and Mathsteacher, Independent MEP MarianHarkin has a more than usualinterest in the BT Young ScientistExhibition held in the RDS Dublin. She is pictured with pupils ofJesus & Mary Secondary School,Crossmolina with their entry atthe exhibition which investigatedthe possibility of introducing aseries of lessons to be taught tonational school children aboutfarm safety.

Pictured at the exhibition were(L to R):- Katie Garrett, MarianHarkin MEP and Jacinta Kelly.

IN the midst of possibly the worstsituation ever experienced ofovercrowding in our hospitals a Sligodoctor has warned that between 300and 350 people will die within thenext year as a result.

Dr Fergal Hickey, pictured here, anemergency medicine consultant atSligo Regional Hospital and spokesmanfor the Irish Association for EmergencyMedicine, was speaking to The IrishTimes last week. “This is somethingthat we have been talking about forover a decade. It is depressing thatwe are in the same situation that wewere in last January and the previousJanuary,” he said. While the situationimproved somewhat late in the weekit is obvious to everyone theunderlying problem remains.

“In spite of clearly identified thingsthat are needed to help, the problemhasn’t been addressed. That’sbecause it isn’t a political ormanagement priority for theDepartment of Health and the HSE.”“There are well-constructed studiesfrom America which show that thirtyand seven-day mortality increases as aresult of emergency departmentovercrowding, and if you apply the

population metrics to the Irishpopulation, some 300-350 Irishpatients a year are dyingunnecessarily as a result of emergencydepartment overcrowding.” Dr Hickeyconceded that Minister Leo Varadkarwas not entirely to blame for thecurrent crisis, but the blame restedwith successive governments. “It’smore than Leo Varadkar; this goesright to the top. The reality is, thisfirst happened in October 1997 whenthe first patient spent a night in theemergency department in Meathhospital, which has since closed.”

“Aggressive intervention” wasrequired and the Sligo-basedconsultant expected that the problemwould continue to get worse in theweeks ahead. “This coming Mondaywe will have a changeover of juniordoctors which will cause a degree ofslowing down of various processes inhospitals. The normal speed ofprocessing will slow down which willnot help the situation in emergencydepartments.” He also sent on to saythat any potential case of Ebola wouldprove catastrophic, given the currentstate of overcrowding in ouremergency departments.

Sligo doctor says many will diedue to overcrowding

With the Fleadh, Sea Sessions, the Ballina SalmonFestival, Sligo Live, the Rory Gallagher Festival, andthe iconic Galway Arts Festival all set for anotherrecord breaking year of entertainment and craic,Minister for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring'sannouncement in December of almost €2m in fundingfor the National Festivals and Events Programme is afurther boost for the north west. As Minister Ringexplained: "Festivals and events are the lifeblood oftourism... Ensuring that we will have a rich variety ofspectacle and experiences throughout the country andall year round next year, the funding announced todaywill provide a key component of our work in 2015 togrow visitor activity towards record levels... We will bekeeping our foot on the pedal to grow tourism in thenext twelve months and I look forward to being in aposition to announce another round of funding forsmaller and regional festivals as well”. While there is adefinite inclination towards the east coast in most ofthe recent economic recovery statistics, tourism is onekey area which has had more far reaching effects. Andas is evidenced in the positive projections for the yearahead; the west is definitely awake.

CARRICK residents are not veryhappy after a recent HIQAreport into operations at StPatrick’s Community Hospital,Carrick-on-Shannon which hashighlighted serious staffingissues at the facility.

The report, published onMonday, January 5, is based onan inspection carried out onOctober 9, 2014, a month afterthe Irish Nurses and MidwivesOrganisation (INMO) highlighted

the “untenable situation” atthe Hospital because of theimpact of the HSE’s long-standing ban on recruitmentand what the union describedas “the HSE’s failure torecognise the risks to patientsas identified by nurses”.

While previous HIQA reportsat St Patrick’s have beenuncontroversial, at the time ofthe most recent visit by HIQAinspectors last October

concerns were raised aboutstaffing levels and the impacton the delivery of nutritionaland end of life care toresidents.

Inspectors also highlighted alack of nutritional supports andunsuitable meal choices forpatients, issues with thephysical layout of the facilityalong with problems with poormedication management andthe use of chemical restraints.

The report noted that, in oneinstance, a resident had lost12kg in a two month period, however his weight was notchecked until he was admittedto a new ward andinterventions were put in placeto help him address this weightloss. Inspectors also found thatsome of the supper menuoptions, such as chickennuggets and chips, were notdeemed nutritional or suitable

for those with swallowing andchewing difficulties.

Concerns were also raisedabout the numbers of patientswho were remaining in bed allday and the availability of foodfor patients between tea whichis served at around 4pm andbreakfast the following morningat 8am.

While the report noted thatresidents and family surveyedby the HIQA inspectors were“happy in the centre” it wasnoted that surveys hadhighlighted the need for “morestaff to meet the resident’scare needs.” Since the HIQAinspection was carried out at StPatrick’s all areas of concernhave been highlighted toHospital Management andactions have been taken toremedy all issues with the vastmajority of actions to be inplace by the end of this month.

We’ve all heard the old riddlewhere the boy in ‘The Adven-tures of Huckleberry Finn’ isasked, “Where was Moseswhen the candle went out?”Yes indeed – “In the dark”was the answer. But not sowhen Irish Power is on thecase. Irish Power offers multi-ple solutions for people whodo not want to be left in thedark when the lights go out. Those who are particularlyvulnerable when this happensare those who are older, those who live alone in ruralareas and people of all ageswith special medical require-ments.Recent Irish Power research

has shown that for many peo-ple, conventional standbypower is simply not an afford-able option for them, and thishas given rise to the develop-ment of their latest productthey have called ‘The LightThat Never Goes Out’. Simplyput, ‘The Light That NeverGoes Out’ (the name of whichwas inspired by the phrasecoined by the legendary Mayopriest Fr. Joseph Foy), is apower supply unit with a lightmounted on it, and which is

always left plugged in to themains in its owner’s house. When this mains power fails

due to a power cut, the unitsenses this and immediatelyturns its own light on, and ifleft on will stay on literallyfor days on end, offeringgreat comfort and securityfor its owner. Production of‘The Light That Never GoesOut’ has already commencedat the Ballina premises ofIrish Power who can be con-tacted through irishpower.ie,or by simply dialling 0879 430460. It is hoped that the fac-tory output will be able toensure that every home willhave ‘The Light That NeverGoes Out’ on standby just incase of stormy weather.

Over 250 ladies all dressed in

black with a “splash of yellow” firstentered the Dungeon Bar for adrinks reception where they min-gled and then proceeded to thefantastic ballroom for a 3 coursemeal with wine and talks. Mc forthe day was Joanne Sweeney Burkea former journalist, PR lecturer andCEO in various roles. She is origi-nally from Donegal but now lives inGalway. Joanne is MD at DigitalTraining Institute and co-founder atEdTech Start-Up, Webiket. A youngentrepreneur who has overcome in-credible challenges in her personallife, Joanne talked about thesechallenges and the challenges fac-ing people today and many of theservice users of the North WestSimon Community. Next to talk wasa brave young lady who herself be-came homeless at 14 yrs and nowlives independently and volunteerswith the charity. This is anincrease of 61% of people in housingdistress on the previous year.Nicola Mc Laughlin award winningfashion blogger judged “best splashof yellow” and talked about fash-ion and style. great lengths with their “splash ofyellow” and Nicola had a hard timejudging the finalist who was SheilaGilroy all the way from Enniskillen, who had an extremely original dresscovered in photographs relating tohomelessness. Homelessness has certainly beenone of the big issues of 2014 andthe hidden homeless problem is onewhich is growing not just in urbanareas but in rural parts of Irelandtoo. Today anyone can face losingtheir home and our perceptionsabout what a ‘homeless person’looked like, what background theymay have come from, or their per-sonal circumstances are no longerrelevant.

“North West Simon Communityhave seen a dramatic increase in“new homeless” people, the “invisi-ble” or” hidden homelessness” isincreasing as people are “crashing”

with other family and friends, peo-ple are effectively being blockedfrom accessing housing, rents arerising and the weather is gettingcolder”, says Mary Mc Keon fromthe charity.

Suzy Mc Canny, fashion photogra-pher from Sligo and Michelle Coyle,Practice Manager with David McConville Orthodontist in the Quay-side Shopping Centre in Sligo lookedafter “Brightest Smile” Competitionand a young girl from Glenfarnewon the fantastic prize of €1,000off braces at David Mc Conville Or-thodontist and a jewellery set.

The charity Autism RapidPrompting MethodIreland has many

members across the regaionand will be presenting JamesKilbane in an Irish country, folk and gospel concert at theMcWilliam Park Hotel,Claremorris on Tuesday 24thFebruary 2014 at 8pm. This

will be James Kilbane’s firstconcert at the popular venuethat is central to surroundingcounties Sligo, Roscommon,Galway and Leitrim. He islooking forward to supportingAutistic Children and theirfamilies as James himself waseducationally challenged as achild and during his teenage

years. On the 24th Februarythe concert will supportchildren and parents in thecharity Rapid PromptingMethod Ireland. All overConnaught there are childrenwho suffered in silence andcould never communicatewith their families. Theysuffered from Autism. Todaythat silence is broken and thechange is being made withRapid Prompting Method RPM.Rapid Prompting MethodIreland was started by thegroup of parents who havediscovered RPM for their ownchildren and want to promoteand share RPM with otherfamilies. The families in Mayoare from Castlebar,Claremorris, Ballyhaunis,Mulranny, Achill, Newport,Attymass and Foxford withother families from Galway,Sligo and Carlow. Eventuallythe charity hope to sendpeople to the USA to betrained in RPM so they canreturn here to train parentsand help more children withautism find their voice.

Children who have beenhelped by RPM are changingthe world’s view of them andautism. RPM was started bySoma Mukapadhyay for herson Tito who has autism inthe USA. She has beenteaching RPM there for 10years. Thousands of childrenhave been transformed by itsuse and it is now reachingchildren across Connaught.RPM teaches the child torespond to the teacherinitially through making 50/50choices on paper. Graduallythe child is taught how topoint to letters on aletterboard and then he canspell his answers.

The person with autismrealises they can expresstheir own thoughts throughspelling words and sentenceson the letterboard. Eventuallythe person is taught to spellon a keyboard or IPad thatspeaks what he has written.RPM gives the Autistic person

a new way to communicatewith others. RPM is verysuccessful with autisticpeople who have no speech orlimited speech. Parents havefound that their children donot suffer from any mentaldeficiency and are of normalintelligence but just could notshow it before. Many Mayofamilies have seen amazingresults for example Adamaged 10 was in an autism unitlast year doing a pre-academic programme, butnow Adam is included in themainstream class doingnormal 4th class subjects withhis peers. Other children likeFiachra aged 13 has gonefrom an autism unit tomainstream secondary schoollearning eight first yearacademic subjects with hispeers. Last May Seosamh aged16 was doing pre-academicactivities like matchingpictures, today Seosamh islearning History, Geography,Science, Mathematics, Musicand English at home.

James Kilbane, his musicand concert are no strangersto the west of Ireland and hisevents are always veryenjoyable nights with amixture of country, Irish andgospel. WITH 9,043 over 65 yrs ofage and 4,594 under 5yrs Sligo has nearly

double the people over 65 asunder 5. It is first time inhistory this trend has emerged.Indeed Sligo’s 14% of populationover 65 is higher than theNational average of 11.7%.Older adults living in Co Sligowill soon get a chance toinfluence the futuredevelopment of the countyfollowing the official signing ofthe Dublin Declaration on AgeFriendly Cities andCommunities by ComhairleachJoe Queenan. The DublinDeclaration was developedfollowing the first internationalconference on Age FriendlyCities held in Dublin in 2011.This conference was co-hostedby the World HealthOrganisation Global Network ofAge Friendly Cities; the AgeingWell Network; and theInternational Federation onAgeing. Also, in 2002 the WHOsaid: “Making cities age-friendly is one of the mosteffective policy approaches forresponding to demographicaging”. The Declarationexpresses the clear and strongcommitment of politicalleaders of cities andcommunities to strengthen andchampion action to make theircommunities more age-friendlyand highlights the need forongoing improvement across arange of interrelated domainsof older people's lives. Thesigning of the declaration bySligo completes a commitmentby ALL local authority areas inIreland to the programme, making Ireland a pioneer increating a world-wide networkof Age Freindly nations.

The Irish Age FriendlyProgramme is part of aninternational initiativedeveloped by the World HealthOrganisation which has seenmore than 1500 cities adopt theAge Friendly concept to create

a global movement.The World Health

Organisation defines an “age-friendly” community as one inwhich service providers, publicofficials, community leaders, religious leaders, businesspeople and individualsrecognise the great diversityamong older people, promotetheir inclusion and contributionin all areas of community life, respect their decisions andlifestyle choices, and anticipateand respond flexibly to ageingrelated needs and preferences.Where we live, the physical, social and cultural environmentwe grow up in, impacts hugelyupon how we live. This is truefor people of all ages, includingolder people. In an age-friendlycommunity, policies, programmes, services andinfrastructure related to thephysical and social environmentare designed to enable olderpeople to live in security, enjoygood health and continue toparticipate in society in ameaningful way. The AgeFriendly Programme is based onthe premise that if you makecommunities more age-friendly,they become friendlier forpeople of all ages. Securetowns and villages are safe forchildren, youth, women andolder adults. Familiesexperience less worry andstress when their olderrelations have the services andsupports they need. Barrierfree buildings and streetsenhance the mobility andindependence of both youngerand older persons withdisabilities. The wholecommunity benefits from theparticipation of older persons involunteer or paid work andcivic activities. Making countiesage-friendly is one of the mosteffective policy approaches forresponding to demographicageing. John Beard, Head ofAge Friendly Cities Programmewith The World Health

Organisation (WHO) argues thatthis initiative in Ireland is bothtimely and forward thinkingand a critical enabler ofrealising Ireland's aspiration tobe the best country in theworld to grow old in. For thefirst time in the world's historythere will be more people overthe age of 60 than under theage of 5 by 2045. In Sligo thistipping point has already beensurpassed with nearly doublethe amount of people over 65as under five already.

Led by Sligo County Council,a number of key organisationshave already committed tomaking Sligo an Age FriendlyCounty and October saw thefirst meeting of the Sligo AgeFriendly Alliance, a committeeestablished to spearhead thenewly adopted Age FriendlyCounty Programme for Sligo.

The Sligo Age-Friendly CountyProgramme will be officiallylaunched early in 2015 and thislaunch will be followed by anextensive consultation processto try and identify the keyissues facing people as they agein our society, as well asexploring solutions proposed bythe community. Theseconsultations are the firstphase in facilitating increasedparticipation of older people inthe social, economic andcultural life of the communityand to hear firsthand theirviews and ideas on how this canbe achieved in the region.

The ethos behind the SligoAge Friendly County Initiativewill ensure that all agencieswork together and shareresources to promote andmaintain the best possiblehealth and well-being of olderpeople and the broadercommunity. The programme isa truly partnership approachbetween organisations andcommunity;

The aim of the programme isto bring together the olderresidents of Sligo and the key

service providers from thestatutory, voluntary, community, and private sectorsto identify the opportunitiesfrom all present on how we canmake Sligo an excellent placein which to live, work, andgrow old. "The way to becomepart of this vibrant network isto ensure a bottom upapproach so you can listen tothe voices of the people in Sligoand not try to second guesswhat is happening. Then youneed local authorities andother key organisations torespond to the diagnosis." SarahWetherald, RegionalDevelopment Consultant, AgeFriendly Ireland

The Sligo Alliance is chairedby Sligo Chief Executive, CiáranHayes and has representationat the most senior level fromSligo County Council, SligoLeader Partnership, HealthService Executive, An GardaSiochána, Sligo Sport andRecreation Partnership, SligoActive Retirement, Sligo Lenda Hand, Muintir na Tire,Citizens Information, SligoCommunity Forum, SligoVolunteer Centre and AgeFriendly Ireland.

Sarah Wetherald, regionalprogramme consultant for Age-Friendly Ireland, said that thesupport from organisationsshown at this first alliancemeeting was hugely positiveand a great start in workingtogether to make Sligo a greatcounty in which to grow upand grow old. Ms Wetheraldsaid the key to the success ofthis initiative will be the directinvolvement of older peopleand older people’s groupsacross the county. She urgespeople to look out for thenotifications for consultationearly next year and putthemselves forward to getengaged. One of the world’s oldestand largest cranes andbeen transformed into a

swanky hotel.Architects say the 50-metre

maritime crane in Amsterdamstill moves in the wind.

Hotel Faralda boasts threeluxury hotel suites – each withtheir own unique character andone with an outdoor hot tub.

The 250 tonne crane was leftto decay had previously beenbranded ‘impossible’ to develop.

But just three years since thatstatement, the crane is hostingelite guests in its rotating suitesdecked out by a top team ofinterior designers.

Hotel spokesman EdwinKornmann Rudi said: ‘But afteryears of preparation there was apoint of no return.

‘Nowhere else in the world is

there something as unique, asbig and high as this hotel.

‘This has put an end to thefight against the decline of thehistoric harbour crane.’

She added it is ‘the mosttalked about wedding location inthe Netherlands’.

Alongside deluxe dining andsumptuous suites, the steelcolossus also boasts a privatebusiness club whereinternationally orientedcompanies and stakeholders touse the crane for all sorts ofsessions.

Developers splurged £660,000building each room, settingcustomers back by £340 a night.

Architects say the crane stillmoves in the wind and is fittedwith a thrust bearing made ofgold – which allows the suites torotate.

Jaws: Someone gotinventive with theirbaby’s crib

It’s hard enough being a baby without youruncle making you sleep in a terrifying sharkcrib.Two-month-old Michael Joseph Melaccio

had to brave the scary looking bed after hisuncle Joseph Reginella decided to make it forhim because he loves Jaws.

‘I’ve been waiting to put this kid in herefor months!’ he wrote on Facebook.

Mikey’s dad Mark Melaccio was complicit inthe making of the haunting crib, which mayhave seemed like a betrayal.

But after viewing more pictures, it becameapparent baby Mikey actually loved his newbed. He could be seen smiling despite theshark appearing to gobble him up!.

He didn’t wantto be stealing to give money to drug dealers,so he got caught.’Mr Cairns was fined £100, and ordered to pay£85 court costs and a victim surcharge of £60.He told the court that he hoped hispunishment would help him find help for hisdrug problems.Call us old fashioned, but we were under theimpression that most people don’t accept‘child’s onesie’ as a form of debt repayment?

When choosing weddingflowers, it is best to makeappointments with more

than one florist to view thearrangements they can offer youand compare them in terms ofprice, value and styles. Manychurches will have a contract witha florist, so you need to be clearon this before you start booking. The wedding bouquet is anextremely important piece of thewedding ceremony, as its a focalpoint. There are many types ofbouquet shapes you can choosefrom, but the common three are;Cascade, Round and hand-tiedbouquets.

Cascading bouquets are greatfor slimming a bride's appearance, especially if a bride is worriedabout her hips. However, a roundbouquet emphasize the bodyshape, so if the bride has a goodfigure, why not show if off!Smaller framed individualsgenerally opt for round bouquetsas it will give the appearance ofelevated height. Slender bridesoften go for a hand tied bouquet,as it balances body shape.

With style out of the way, nextyou will have to decide on theflowers themselves. While this isvery exciting, for some brides, itcan also be troublesome. 1 in 5Irish people suffer from an allergyto pollen. Hay fever sufferers canfind summer weddings a difficultexperience, as there is so manyflowers pollinating during thesummer season. If a member ofthe wedding party suffer from hayfever, it is best to opt for either

artificial flowers or for pollen freeflowers such as Orchids, Calla Lillyor Roses. .Orchids petals appearto be very delicate but a resurprisingly robust and canwithstand a lot of handling.Orchids are the picture ofelegance and are great anytime ofyear. Tulips have long beenanother common option as theyare pretty and elegant. Roses arethe classic flowers for a bouquetand emanate radiance and grace.Calla Lilies are the latest trendand are a sophisticated choice. Ithas become a modern trend tomix white calla lilies with oneblack 'schwarzwalder' calla, as astriking vocal point.

However, if hay fever is not aconcern, your choice of flowers isendless. Why not opt for redChrysantemum's which symboliselove or amaranths which aresymbolic of fidelity. White andpink Lily flowers are a popularchoice for summer weddings, while lilacs are often picked forspring weddings to bring a touchof violet to the bouquet. Bridesoften go for forget-me-not flowersas they are symbolic of true loveand add a lovely touch of indigoto the bouquet, which in springcan look fantastic, mixed withwhite chrysanthums. If you arenot a big lover of flowers, tulipsare the best choice as they can bekept simple, without too muchfrills or foliage.

In terms of cost, the prices canvary from florist to florist, but astandard bouquet will set youback in the region of €100.

Bridesmaids bouquets can tally upto a similar cost, so its best to gointo the florists with a budget inmind. A word of warning, inseason flowers will dramaticallyreduce your flower bill, comparedto ordering flowers that are out ofseason.

A trend that is emerging inmodern weddings is to use silkflowers. The idea behind using silkflowers is that many brides likethe idea of being able to keep thebouquet as a keepsake. Silkwedding flowers are availablefrom floristry shops or online andare a novel way of having lastingmemories from your wedding day.

Now that the bouquet is out ofthe way, you need to startthinking about other members ofyour wedding party. Corsages andbuttonholes are great forgroomsmen, while Boutonniere'sare ideal for parents of the brideand groom and other members ofthe family. They are a great wayof including members of thefamily, that may not have a role inthe ceremony also.

Once you have all the peopleaccounted for, you need to startthinking about the venue flowers.Since the altar will be the focal

point of your ceremony, considerusing the most elaborate andbeautiful decorations on it. Manyweddings now include flowers atthe reception, as they bring thescents, the colour and the style ofthe marriage to the eveningsection of the wedding day. Themood you want to create for yourguests can be your guide inhelping you decide on appropriate

floral arrangements for a weddingreception. Consider your dinnerplan, will you need a flowercentre piece for guest tables? forthe cake stand? for the gift table?or for the dance floor edge? All ofthese will push up the overallcosts, so choose wisely and cutout where flowers may not beneeded, to help keep the costdown.

You’re getting married! It’sset to be the best day ofyour life. You’ve sorted the

venue, the caterers, even thedress. But what about the all-important guest list? Once you’vejumped the ‘his guests vs yours’ratio hurdle, the reality of thesituation hits home. Your nearest, dearest and frankly, weirdest willall be together in one room and, whoa, what a potent mix that is.But rest assured, without thismotley crew of hangers-on,drunkards and odd bods, your bigday wouldn’t be nearly as special,or indeed, as memorable…

THE GROOVERThe natural counterpart to the

Wannabe DJ: a mal-coordinated,middle-aged whirling dervishcausing indiscriminate chaosacross the dance floor. Andseemingly unaware of the dangerhe poses – whether ‘bopping’,‘jiving’, ‘doing the worm’,grabbing random females to swinground precariously, way too closeto the wedding cake, orperforming his own terrifyinglyliteral interpretation of break-dancing. In short: the kind of manthe producers of You’ve BeenFramed have been dreaming offor years.

THE TOTAL LAD

Weddings, as any fool knows, areoccasions of dignified celebration. But – uh-oh – one fool didn’t getthe memo. You can tell from theguffawing at the back of the

room: he’s either holding courtwith jokes about STDs, or doingtequila slammers with yourteetotal uncle. Or worst of all,he’s miming a crude anecdotefrom the stag do. But come on:isn’t that what the Best Man’sspeech is for?

THE WANNABE DJ

This is where your day could go abit ‘Pete Tong’. For some people, the traditional weddingsoundtrack of Abba, Sinatra andthen ‘something faster for youyoung ones’ just doesn’t cut it.Which explains why this guy willbe stood in the disco booth allnight, drunkenly flicking throughhis iPod to show the nonplussedactual DJ some obscure Prodigy B-side that is ‘absolutely 100%totally guaranteed to get thisplace bangin’, man.’ That may beso – but shall we wait untilthey’ve finished the speeches?

THE BITTER DIVORCEE

Did you detect a snorting soundduring the ceremony? Perhaps asarcastic cackle during the vows –or a cautionary shake of the headwhen the groom said ‘I do’? Don’tworry if you didn’t: the BitterDivorcee will be available allnight to pour scorn on theconcepts of marriage, fidelity andlove for anyone within earshot ofthe bar. Until 9pm, that is, whenshe drunkenly makes a desperate, thunderous pitch to grab thebouquet, knocks over a toddlerand skids headlong into the cake.

THE FOB

Of course he’s invited; it would berude not to. Especiallyconsidering he’s paid for at leastsome of it. Which explains whyhe’s wandering round all day witha slightly furrowed, dazedexpression. Because not only is heletting go of the apple of his eye(you), he’s being forced to delivera speech and display actualemotion. He also gets to watch aload of people he either a)doesn’t know, or b) has neverliked, guzzle their way through£10,000 that he’d previouslyearmarked for a newconservatory. That’s exactly whyyou should love him even more

THE WEEPER

Sure, weddings can beemotionally overwhelming. Forthe bride, groom and close family, certainly. But what, pray tell, isthe matter with this woman? Thisdistant auntie or family friendwho can’t help staring at you withhappy, glistening eyes, holdingyour face lovingly as she offersbanal… advice… in … halting…sentences. Before she chokes intoher handkerchief and is led awayto pull herself together in thelobby.

THE HOTTIEFile her under ‘a little somethingfor the dads’: your beautifulfriend from work/university who –annoyingly – never fails to turn upto social soirees looking slim, immaculately dressed and eye-

poppingly stunning. Hence thepatch of silence that follows heraround the room, as middle-agedmen unaccustomed to seeingattractive young women close-upstop talking and just gawphopelessly. Until being roundlybusted by their own better half.

THE ELIGIBLE BACHELOR

Invitations don’t come more win-win than this: ‘Hey, Dave! Cometo our wedding – there’ll be a freebar and loads of single women!’But not even in his wildest dreamsdid he think he’d get this level ofwhispered, pointy attention.Because only now has therealisation struck: on this day ofromance, commitment and highemotion, he’s the only person for30 square miles who’s both singleand in possession of a Y-chromosome. And who’s not yourweird, squinty Uncle Pete.

THE AWKWARD TEENAGERHe’s grown up! Isn’t he supposedto be, like, six years old?Seemingly not: since you last seteyes on your cousin, he’sapparently stopped wearingSpider-Man pyjamas and hasinstead blossomed into a lanky,acne-flecked beanpole with amouth so full of dental bracesthat he looks like he mightactually be gargling paperclips. And now forced to wearuncomfortable nylon trousers forthe day, he can only mumble shylyand blush a vivid shade of pucewhen one of your bridesmaids –the one with the impressivecleavage – walks past.

THE ONE THAT GOT AWAYThe perennial wedding mystery:why so many brides and groomsinvite a former squeeze. True, youmight still be ‘good friends’. Andnothing else quite proves thesanctity of your vows than havinga guest at the ceremony who hasalso seen you naked (parentsnotwithstanding, obviously). Butcome on: you know the realreason. There’s no better way ofsaying to that ex: ‘Hey – look atwhat you could have had, andnow never will!’

THE RELLY YOU DON’T KNOWThe fact that even your mum’sface has gone blank says it all. With his scruffy beard andrumpled suit he seems friendly –and he certainly appears to knoweveryone’s name. But who exactlyis this man sipping champagne, demolishing the hors d’oeuvresand wishing you well? Who cares? One more guest equals one moregift, right?

THE DRUNKThe cast-iron rule of weddingssince prehistoric times: there’salways one. One perenniallysingle girl who ruins all chance ofromance by downing five glassesof bubbly on an empty stomachand sliding off the bar beforebeing put to bed by 8pm. Or oneperennially single man whoquietly drinks himself into astupor during the speeches, thenclumsily tries to dirty-dance withan auntie before falling asleepnext to the speaker. Indeed, it’s ashame you never get both at thesame time; they’d probably makea lovely couple.

THE BAFFLED GRANNYSnatched from her one-bedbungalow and wheeled out for thereception, it’s the familymatriarch. Ancient, shrivelled, smelling faintly of mothballs – andvisibly confused, as she peers atthe procession of ever-youngerrelatives she’s only dimly awareof ever meeting before. Or staresblankly at a dance floor filledwith people cavorting toLordknows-what racket whilesomeone spoon-feeds her trifle.Until 7pm, that is, when she’sdeemed to be ‘tired’ and wheeledback to the care home, where…Hang on. What do you mean we‘took the wrong grandma’?

It's your big day!Why not let Bridal Mobile Hair ease some of your stress. We will call to your home or hotel on the day of your wedding or event so you don't have to rush around from place to place. You will leave for your wedding beautiful and relaxed, because we listen to you, the client, when it comes to decisions and revisions as needed. This allows us to create the mostinteresting and wonderful hairstyles to suit you.

You are getting married andwant a beautiful event, yetyou need to stick to a tightbudget. This is a problemthat faces many brides. Don'tworry; there are ways tohave your dream weddingwithout breaking the bank

1 Prioritize! Make a list ofthe most important thingsyou want for your weddingand have your fiancé do thesame. Are you mostcommitted to havinggorgeous flowers, inviting 400people, hosting the weddingat a particular location, orserving filet mignon andlobster? Knowing yourpriorities before the planningstarts will help you decidewhat to spend money on, andwhat you don't mind doingcheaply or doing without.

2 Trim the guest list. This isdifficult but sometimesnecessary if the cost perguest is going to break yourbudget. Cross off names onthe list of guests who mightfeel obligated to come to thewedding if they are invited,

but would not have theirfeelings hurt if they are notasked to attend. Think ofinviting only relatives withwhom you have a closerelationship instead ofeveryone related to you.Invite only the people whoare important to you andyour parents, rather thaneveryone you know.

3 Reduce the number ofpeople in your bridal party. You have to buy nice giftsfor every member of yourbridal party, and that addsup. Plus, traditionally, theentire bridal party plus theirdates are invited to therehearsal dinner. Seven bridesmaids and sevengroomsmen, all their dates, ring bearer and flower girls, and their families, plus bothsets of parents and all thereaders in the ceremony, plus officiant could add upto 40+ people to feed!

4 Have your weddingceremony and receptionheld at a hotel, and ask for

discounts when family andfriends are staying at samehotel.Reserve a block of rooms foryour guests several monthsbefore the wedding for thebest rates. Speak with theappropriate manager whenasking for discounts andreserving rooms.

5 Stick to the schedule foryour ceremony andreception. Musicians willcharge more if asked toperform beyond the timestated in their contract. Youwill also incur additionallimo charges if your eventruns longer than planned.

6Ask friends to lend theirtalents by helping out withsuch things as invitations, flowers, and programs.Ask a friend with prettypenmanship to address yourinvitations instead of hiringa calligrapher. If you simplify your flowersand arrangements, perhapsa friend can assemble freshor silk flowers which willsave you hundreds of euros.

Some of the most attractivewedding programs areprinted from a homecomputer and thencreatively assembled withcoloured cardboard, tissuepaper, ribbon, etc.

7 Consider having yourwedding any day butSaturday. Fridays are alsopopular wedding days butmay cost a lot less than aSaturday event. For even greater savings, choose a weekday eveningfor your wedding. Schedulethe wedding to allow gueststime to arrive at theceremony after the work dayhas ended. Many guests enjoy weekdayweddings as this frees uptheir weekends for otheractivities. Choose a date betweenNovember and April(between May and October ifyou live in the southernhemisphere) to avoid higherpeak season rates in manyareas.

8 Professionally posed and

properly lightedphotographs are one of thefew beautiful keepsakesyou'll have from yourspecial day, but gettingthem doesn't have to breakthe bank. Choose an EXPERIENCEDphotographer who willinclude ALL OF THE IMAGESON A CD for one low price. Then you can make as manyinexpensive copies as youneed rather than pay a hugereprint fee to thephotographer. Also, consider a private pre-wedding encounter for thebride and groom followed byall of the posedphotography. Completing everythingbefore your wedding meansyou can spend the entireremainder of your dayenjoying yourself and thecompany of your guests.(Guests can't stand to bekept waiting between thewedding and the reception.)

9 After looking at the finalplan of your wedding, butbefore paying any deposits,

decide where you cansimplify the whole process. Consider whether you reallyneed choral singers and astring quartet at theceremony and a weddingsinger and a DJ at thereception. Releasing doves orbutterflies or having acandle-lighting ceremonyare all wonderful, but mayend up costing a lot ofmoney. Simplicity saves money andif done well, your weddingmay seem more serene andawe-inspiring.

10 Remember that thewedding is one day at thestart of a life-longcommitment.

Look beyond the weddingday to the goals you willhave as newlyweds.

If you want to purchase ahouse in the next few years, keeping that as a prioritythroughout the weddingplanning process will helpyou to be prudent about howmuch you spend on that oneday.

When it comes to planning awedding, few decisionsare as delightful as

choosing your wedding cake. Afterall, what could be better thansampling slice after slice ofdelicious cake. The cake is one ofthe most prevalent symbols ofyour wedding. It will featureprominently in your weddingpictures and it will be a focalpoint for your guests when theyarrive at the reception hall. Yourcake can pull together yourcolours and wedding theme in onebeautiful and delicious package.

When it comes to choosing awedding cake, you must firstconsider what it is you are lookingfor? Do you want a traditionalivory tiered cake? a modernchocolate and vanilla cake or fruitflavoured art piece? Whether youare utterly clueless to what youwant or have a good idea of thestyle of cake you want, next youmust visit bakers to see what theycan offer you. This task must bedone in good time (approximately4 months before the big dayitself). You should visit two orthree bakers and ask to see theirportfolio. This will help youdetermine if you like the bakersstyle. In order to ascertain whatsize cake you will need, considerhow many guests you will have inattendance. Remember, thebigger the cake, the more

expensive it will be. One way ofsaving money is to order a smallercake for display at the receptionand two sheet cakes that can becut and placed on plates in thekitchen and served to the guests. The sheet cake can beconsiderably plainer than thecake on display. This saves a hugecost and still means you get toshow off a cake!

When considering the shape andsize of the cake. Traditional roundand square cakes are still verypopular and easy to cut. Lookthrough wedding magazines andbakers samples to find a weddingcake design that dazzles you!

The cake's design should matchthe aesthetic of the day. A formalwedding generally calls for astructured, multi-layer cake. Fora less formal wedding, you canembrace the unconventionalcake.

Multiple tiers allows you tooffer several kinds of cake eachlevel can be different, offeringsomething for everyone. So if thebride is a fan of cheesecake, butthe groom is a big fan of fruitcake, you can now have both inone cake. A common combinationincludes one tier - mouse filledcake, one tier fruit, one tierchocolate and vanilla cake, frosted with butter cream frostingor rolled fondant. Icingtraditionally comes in either a

simple sugar recipe or rich creamcheese variety and usually iswhite or ivory, but morecontemporary approaches involveother colours. If you wearing ivoryor champagne, let the baker knowand they can tint the icingaccordingly. Remember, anythinggoes from dark chocolate to palepastels, with modern weddingcakes. They tend to be decoratedto match the bride's lace patternon her gown or even the bouquet. Some couples design the cakearound the decor or theme of thewedding. Brides often go for lace, embroidery applique or elegantdrapes. Common features include;ruffles, bows, swirls and ribbonsformed from pastiage and blownsugar. Cakes can also be garnishedwith real ivy leaves, non-toxicflowers and chocolate towers andtruffles. When it comes towedding cake, your imagination isthe only limit to the appearanceof your special confection.

While it is essential that thewedding cake appeals to yourvisual senses, it is even moreimportant that it taste's moist anddelicious. Tasting is not only a funtask, but an essential one also. Donot just settle on a cake, becauseyou cannot see anything like whatyou wanted. Shop around for thebest offers and do not be afraid toask the baker if they can workwith your design and style, you

might just be very surprised athow accommodating they can be.It is always wise to bring alongcuttings of cakes you like andsketches of the style of cake youare looking for. Take samples ofyour dress, bouquet andbridesmaids colours to leave withthe pastry chef.

Ask the baker about additionalcosts, such as cake tops, pillars, columns and whether or not theseitems need to be returned to the

store. Also ask about the deliveryprocess. Will the cake be set upat the reception by the baker orwill the caterer have to do this?Once you have decided on a cakeand a baker, get a contract inwriting. There is no pointagreeing aspects orally, make sureyou have a written record of whatyou have ordered and are fullyaware that the baker knows whatyou are looking for, this will avoidany nasty surprises on the day.

Hey there, lucky bride! A newyear is nearly here, usheringin a new swoon-worthy

wedding season. We searched theinternet to see what is big inAmerica and everyone agrees:2015 will be the year of trueromance. Weddings are goingsofter, sweeter, lusher and moreheartfelt. It’s a return to classicchivalry, to the things that madeour mothers cry, and it’shappening just in time for you tomelt hearts and make memories.

1.Pink is back! Do you alreadyfeel like a blushing bride? Carrythat sweet love over to yourcolour scheme, says Tara Guérard, the event designer behind ultra-luxe Soirée in Charleston and NewYork. "It’s the nudes, the blushes, the peaches — not Pepto Bismolpink!" she announces.

2. The return to romance ushersin a new love for the formalityof days gone by. Think white-gloved waiters and big banddancing, crystal candlesticks andgold-rimmed china. One majorbridal inspiration for the return to

tradition comes from Hollywood. Her brides are still falling hard forthe bubbly, approachableelegance of the Roaring Twenties

3. but throw out the hard-edgedlooks. “Chevron was big lastyear,” says Tara, “but now I’mseeing trellis-patterns, boldstripes and florals.”

4. Lush, soft, Exquisitelyromantic — the flower of the yearis the many-petaled tree peony, says New York’s Ariella Chezar, whose work has been seen at theWhite House. Amber Gustafson ofLos Angeles’s Amber Events picksa similar bloom — the sweet-smelling garden rose.

5. The flower garland is back ina big way. Ariella loves citrusgarlands for bars and overdoorways — lemons, limes, oranges on the stem. “And ferngarlands are really beautiful. Ilove them down the center of along table.”

6. And in the sweetest trend ofall, invitations this year are

getting small. The most requestedlook is for an invitation smallerthan the standard 5x7 —something little, dainty andinfinitely precious.

7.2015 is the year to get spicy.Elizabeth reports that brides areover the moon for heat on themenu. “We using a lot ofCalabrian chili oil, a lot ofsriracha — and are seeing guestsreach first for the spicy things onthe menu.”

8. The favourite service style tocapture this year’s approachableelegance? While the waitersmight be wearing black dinnerjackets and white gloves, they’representing food family style. “It’smore interactive when everyonehelps themselves,” says MorrisKitchen's Karina Seljak.

9. Adorable little freehandillustrations will adorninvitations everywhere thisyear. Melinda Morris of Lion In the

Sun, a paperie boutique inBrooklyn, New York, tells us thatthese invites are completelycustom, so if you can dream it, anartist can help you bring yourvision to life.

10. In 2015, your cake willshine! Cheryl Kleinman of BettyBakery says the look ranges froma fairy dusting of very fine glitteron the top tiers, to wild disco ballsparkle..

11. "Right now flavour is verydriven by season," explainsCheryl. In the summer, choose alemon cake with lemon flavor. Inthe winter, brides are looking forchocolate cakes with rich accentsof mocha or praline.

12. Music that fits your theme.New York society bandleader AlexDonner says his clients arerequesting music to go along withwedding themes ranging fromfilms (The Great Gatsby) tolocales (like France — all songs

were performed in French!).

13. The element of surprise.Stick to songs that your guestsknow and love but mix up themusical styles. "Think a bluegrassband playing ‘Hava Nagila’ or astring quartet playing Coldplay,"says bandleader Amber Gustafon.

14. Looking for a chic wildcardidea? Forgo reception favoursaltogether for a “pillow present,”a little welcome gift left forguests at their hotel. Who doesn’twant to arrive from a big trip tofind milk and cookies, or wake toa breakfast surprise of scones andlocal jam?

Ilove burning timber in our stove;timber is clean to handle, thereis very little ash left afterwards,

it is good for the environment andthe ash can be spread on thegarden afterwards, unlike coal ash. However, one of the difficultieswith using wood in our small stoveis that it burns quickly and as aresult a lot of tending is required toavoid it going out. We usually haveto add logs every 30 or 40mins. So Idecided to try the unusual andcounter intuitive upside downmethod of fire starting. This isdesigned to allow the fire to burn

for a longer time using the sameamount of timber while producingless black smoke. It started lifewith campers who wanted a firethat would last for 8 to 9 hours, through the night, without them

having to wake up to add moretimber. This is possible using thismethod in a large fire, so while itwouldn’t last 8 hours in our smallstove; I wanted to try it to see howmuch more time I could get,

without putting logs on the fire. The method is simple:When setting the fire, put a layerof large logs across the bottom. Then put logs above, but in theopposite directionThen a layer of smaller logs abovethis. Then layer of sticks in the oppositedirection. Then two layers of dry kindling, each in opposite directions. Then a layer of ripped paper withfire lighters on top.My stove isn’t big enough for allthese layers, I only had one layer oflogs on the bottom row. Theprinciple seems to be that becausethe fire is burning from the top, itburns for longer. Like a candle itonly burns the timber at the top atany time. A normal fire is startedfrom the bottom and shortlyafterwards lighting, all the timberis alight at the same time. With theupside down method much less ashis produced as the embers from thetop fall though the successivelayers and are thoroughly burnt. Ina regular fire the first embersproduced are at the bottom of thefire and simply fall through thegrate once they are small enough, whether they are completely burntor not.I did all this, lit the fire lighters,(at the top), and noted the time. Itburned slowly for a while and thentook off….slowly; I had to open the

stove door for a few minutes to getthe fire to take properly. Itgradually burned through the layersof wood and it took an hour toreach the lower layer. The heatgiven off was good and I probablyused less wood overall. More woodis used at the start than usual butnone is added, compared with aregular fire where less wood is usedat the start and more is addedduring. It was two hours andtwenty minutes before I had to putthe first log on the fire and as I saidearlier it would last a lot longer ina larger fire or bigger stove. It’sdefinitely worth doing, especially ifyou are busy in the house and don’twant to be checking the fire thatoften. However it is of more usewith an open fire, where there islittle control. A stove iscontrollable and the fire burn ratecan be slowed to a certain extentby restricting the air inflow throughthe adjustable valve.

It has often been said that no two Jason Byrne showare ever the same. Now the master of improvisedcomedy pushes the limits even further with the

introduction of the wheel of stand up. This totallyoriginal stand up concept, which is either an act ofextreme daring or supreme laziness, involves Jasonnot only letting the audience name the show butgetting them to choose the topics discussed as theyare invited to spin the wheel of random nonsense.Don't miss the most talked about show at theEdinburgh Fringe 2014. Talk that involved every othercomedian in the world saying, 'He's doing what now?... ah Jesus, why do we even bother!' We've allwatched Jason rip up the comedy rule book. Nowwatch him rip it up, set fire to it, defecate on it andpoint at it in derisory fashion.*• This show contains noactual ripping, burning or defecating and only somemild derisory pointing.

It's normal to disagreeIt may help to know that argumentsaren't necessarily a sign that yourfamily is dysfunctional."If you are willing to get into anydepth of a relationship with anyoneand be genuine, you will eventuallyrun into areas in which the two ofyou don't see eye to eye," says SimonRego, PsyD, director of psychologytraining at Montefiore Medical Cen-ter, in the Bronx, N.Y. The same istrue, of course, in family relationships,he says.

Although there usually is less conflictin superficial relationships, Rego says,"You don't get the richness of humanconnection."Don't drink too muchJennifer S. (not her real name), an edi-tor and mom from New Jersey, learned this lesson the hard waywhen her liberal family teamed up onher beloved—but conservative—stepdad during a boozy post-9/11 ar-

gument that ended with him leavingthe house.

She didn't witness the scene, butknew it took a while for the family toheal or even dare to get together.

But a recent vacation was a greatsuccess, she says, largely because theyavoided getting into touchy subjectsafter having a few drinks.Recognize your triggersAs you prepare for your next familygathering, think about what's hap-pened in the past, and also aboutwhat others do that triggers you toreact, says Julie Glovin, a clinical socialworker from Worcester, Mass."What feelings come up when youget triggered?" Glovin says. "Do youhave a history of not being validatedin your thoughts? Not heard? Whathappens to you physically and behav-iorally? Does your stomach hurt? Doyou want to cry? Do you reach foranother glass of wine?"

Identifying your triggers canhelp you control your anger.

Take a time-outIf you're starting to feel angry orthreatened, it's a good idea to take atime-out to collect your thoughts."Ideally we give our kids time-outs sothey learn to manage their feelings;we need to do the same for our-selves," Glovin says. "Remind yourselfthat you are an adult and yourthoughts are valid."It's OK to disengage and say, "I don'tthink this is a good conversation tohave—I'm getting too worked up."

Control your reaction

Much as we would like to, we can'tcontrol how other people behave—but we can control how we react."Family relationships fall back on oldhabits, so someone might try to goadyou by saying, ‘You're too sensitive,'"Glovin says. "Take a moment. Is ittrue? Do you agree?" If not, recognizethat—and that it might be the otherperson's issue. By reacting differentlythan you might have in the past, shesays, you're changing the family dy-namic—and maybe pushing the otherperson to react differently too.

Avoid labelsA person and their politics are notthe same thing. "You have to recog-nize that people are more than theirpolitical beliefs," Jennifer says. "Theyare deserving of respect....It's not thatthey're Darth Vader, it's just a differ-ent perspective."Don't get caught up in thinking,"they're stubborn or they're racist orthey're sexist or they're homophobicor they're so righty or they're solefty," Rego says. "They get put in abox, so if you're in a different one,you only see difference."

Agree to disagreeTake a look at the dinner-table de-bate and know that trying to changesomeone else's mind is pretty muchalways a lost cause, Glovin says. "Arepeople trying to share information tohelp each other be better informed,or are we trying to change belief sys-tems?" she says. "The latter is futile—and ultimatelypeople are looking for their own be-liefs to be validated. Agreeing to dis-agree can be a way to validate anddefuse the situation."
