A Message from our Chapter President.

Wow, What a great truck show!! I hope that everyone enjoyed our 24th annual chapter truck show as much as I did. We really did check all the boxes for what makes a show work. Location, LeMay’s Event Center, A Great Venue, with on the grass parking. The weather was perfect, we had lots of great trucks, over 75 in fact. Great Sponsors, and Venders with lots of good food and things to drink and nibble on. We added a new touch this year with a DJ and sound system with great rock and roll, and western music selections. Most important of all Lots and Lots of people who came to admire and look at all the great trucks on display. Hats off and a Huge Thank You to all of our volunteer’s and the staff people from LeMay’s and your Board members who worked tirelessly to ensure that everything went off as it was planned. There were so many that I can’t even begin to list them all here. Without their hard work and dedication things would have not been so successful. A special shout out to Mike Slade, our chapter VP and truck show coordinator who did a great job planning out the parking and layout of the truck shows vehicle’s and vender locations. And all of the other de-tails that must be attended to in order to make a great show. Everyone that I talked to remarked on how well the parking was laid out and how nice it was to have enough room between trucks so that you could actually see them. If you haven’t already, check out the great photos that our board member Aaron Kitahara put on the chapter Facebook page about 150 or so in total. A very special Thank You to our great sponsor’s. Doug Small, a Northwest chapter member and owner of “The Truck Shop in Auburn” a Western Star, Hino, Fuso dealership, who displayed some really cool new Western Stars for us to check out. I’s a great place to buy parts if you are in the need, just mention that you are a chapter member. Also Jan Erickson of “GCR Tires and Service” Plant Manager of the Auburn facility and his great crew who can take care of all your truck tire needs. A Bridgestone, Firestone, Bandag dealership. They did impress all with the big boom truck used to service earthmover type tires. A very cool machine indeed. Last but not the least, Terry Williams and “Equipment Unlimited” in Sumner WA. The Truckers Store, for sure, if it’s chrome or polish you are in need of that’s the place to go. Terry did a raffle drawing for a really cool new toolbox and a train horn set. I also want to give a special thank You to The LeMay Family, Nancy and Doug, for all of the support that they have given to our chapter and to Trudy Cofchin and her staff for helping us make this all happen. It truly was not possible without the wholehearted support from them. We all had a great time, so the question is will we do it again next year? That is a question for the membership that will be voted on at the next general membership meeting, I would guess at Walrath’s in Nov. Mike Slade and I have already had some discussion with LeMay’s and we have blocked out the same weekend in 2020 for our 25th anniversary show, if the membership approves. Also I have talked to all our sponsors and they all have expressed support for doing the show again which I think that the board members will vote to recom-mend that to the membership. However, that has not happened yet and we do have procedures that we must follow. Rest assured that we are working on it and will get out all the information that we have as soon as pos-sible. So, if you didn’t make it to this year’s show and are kicking yourself in the you know where, with luck and hard work you may get another shot at it next year.

In closing, in the back of this newsletter is a list of upcoming events. I hope that everyone will attend as many events as you are able too. Brooks looks like it will be its usual great show and this year, and with five week-ends in August there won’t be a conflict with another great event. The annual car truck show at LeMay's the following weekend is always fun with good parking for those who bring their trucks. Last and just as important will be the chapter general membership meeting at the Chehalis swap meet on Sept. 21. This will again be a bag lunch so if you want lunch let me or Mike Slade know so that we can order them. Hope to see you all at an event soon. Best Wishes, B.J.

Reno in the Rear View Mirror Grand Sierra Resort, home to the ATHS 2019 National convention. What a show!- what an adventure! My wife Debbi and I made the trip from Midland WA trailering our Diamond T 404 because driving at a top speed of 48mph, we would have needed to pack more than a lunch. I am real sure my version of the trip is a lot different than hers (but more on that later). I found out during our stay at the show that GSR didn’t really stand for Grand Sierra Resort, it really stands for Good Shoes Required… No joke! More than once I heard” does your room have a microwave?” The answer was no! So it becomes a puzzle what do you do to heat up your left-overs from dinner? And in the many miles I traveled through-out the complex, I never found a drinking fountain. There were good and bad elements to this year’s show as there are to any large event. The good: trucks-trucks-and more trucks. In the show areas out of the show areas, sometimes as far as you could see. The bad: golf carts, everywhere, like locus. If you need a CDL to drive a truck; an endorsement to ride a motorcycle; then by god there should be one for golf carts, and who made the stupid rule no horns? If you have a bit of a hearing problem, like some of us, then either ok a honk or two or have a cardiac unit on standby. More good: meeting lots of truck loving people who would stop and talk about their truck or yours in a heartbeat. Standing by the back door to the lower truck area I met Jim Dobbas, what an honor to spend some time with him as other old-time truck people came by and shared recollections. The volunteers that I met worked hard for the show. I volun-teered myself and to tell the truth being thrust into a position of being visible (damn fluorescent hat and vest), the name badge didn’t help either, led to people asking about anything and everything, sometimes having to do with the show, sometime… If you picture the proverbial deer in the headlights look, then add a moustache and that was the look on my face more than once. I ran into Northwest Chapter members everywhere and some quite unexpectedly, organized we were not. Maybe in the future we could coordinate a little and celebrate the adventure. On one of the many truck walks late one afternoon I found Lou Berry’s truck parked next to Jim Hayes’s. I stood looking at it for a while when it finally dawned on me the truck now sported steel antlers. If you want to freak out your kids, text them you are heading to the casino with their inheritance, then watch as they burn up their phones texting back. Almost as hilarious as sending a picture of your new toolbox with the Caption” look what you inherited”. And who knew that sitting in your truck waiting to go through to get your registration and photo you would find a guy hitting golf balls into a fake lake with little islands entertaining…. HOT TIP: Anyone hauling a rig on a trailer; MapQuest and older Garmins are not your friends. Short cuts should be viewed with suspicion. CA139 is not 1 hour shorter when pulling a heavy load trailer. The grade in places was not for the faint at heart like my wife. She was so nervous in places she couldn’t even yell at me, up-side to that was it let me concentrate on getting down the mountain. 2nd Hot tip Alturas 19.1 miles would have been a better choice. So with stories to tell; contacts to keep in touch with; and memories made, we head-ed home to clean off the bugs and get ready for the next adventure. And finally for the umpteenth time, no my truck is not for sale; wasn’t part of the auc-tion; and I don’t plan on parting with it. (there is a story here for down the road.) Might have to start planning for 2020.

Report from the Chapter Vice President & Truck Show Chairman The American Truck Historical Society (ATHS), Northwest Chapter’s 24

th annual truck show has

come and gone with great success made possible from the team work of all the volunteers who put in long hours before and during the show. As chairman of the truck show, I would like to thank all the volunteers.

We cannot forget our three sponsors; The Truck Shop, GCR Tires & Services, and Equipment Un-limited who provided the financial resources for the truck show to be hosted on the grounds of the LeMay Marymount Museum. Two of our sponsors brought their trucks and the third brought their trailer to showcase their businesses. The truck show’s success can be measured in many ways this year with the number of registered trucks doubling from that of previous years and having the pre-registration of 25 trucks before the show. There was a wide assortment of trucks from old/new, small/large, working/retired, and tattered/tricked out which represents that all trucks are welcome to participate at our chapter’s truck show. The feature truck, the red 1940 Sterling, L & E tanker truck with tank trailer was parked out in front for all visitors to see as they arrived to the show. New to the show was music provided by a DJ, the Senior Center selling pulled pork sandwiches and the Mary-mount Museum provided hotdogs. To meet our visitors coming to the show was our chapter tent which provided the opportunity to sign up new members and sell chapter merchandise. Next in line was the Tiny Trucker tent which had truck games and prizes for the participating kids. We had the good company from our friends from the Brooks Museum with us again. A big hit with the kids was the truck photo board that the Brooks museum brought to allow kids to get their picture taken in a small truck. A surprise to the show was the group, PNW Scale Truck and Equipment who showed up with their small scale remote control (RC) trucks, loaders and dump trucks and ran them all over the grounds to the enjoyment of everyone.

My closing, this year’s truck show forecasts what next year’s 25th annual anniversary truck show

will be.
