The Slidell Police Association will be hosting its 5th annual Toys From Cops events for 2015. Our goal this Christmas season is to provide very special Christmas memories to dozens of Slidell’s ill, in-need, and impoverished children, as well as children of disabled or deployed military families. As in our tradition, Christmas Elves will assist Santa Claus and Mrs. Clause in handing out specially handpicked and wrapped toys during several Christmas Parties throughout Slidell.

Photos will be taken, music will be played, and food will be served all in the effort to bring smiles to those little ones who still believe in the magic of Santa.We are looking to our local citizens and business to help assist us by December 1st, in raising money, providing items for a silent auction, or providing unwrapped toys to create this special Christmas memory for these children. Following Senator David Vitter’s embarrassing loss to John Bel Edwards on Saturday, the one-time nearly invincible politician is now in the market for another paying gig. Lobbying doesn’t seem to be an option; most former politicians who successfully enter that high-paying field have an affinity for people and an ability to persuade. Creative television

is another dead end; using your look-alike, albeit charming teenage son as your spokesman to pull out a highly unlikely win is not the way to sway many votes….but the kid is sharp. Wonder where he gets it from?

Now where else could a bumbling, kinda likable, overrated guy get a seven or eight figure dollar job by not doing anything different over an eight to twelve year period? He could go to Baton Rouge, not in politics, where the governorship is now taken, but could join the coaching staff of one Lester Miles, he of the insightful, well-modulated, professionally crafted coaching firm of Miles, Mishaps and Malaprops. There, he could try to teach Mr. Miles how to apologize, almost believably, about a faux pas some years back. Not 15 years, like Mr. Vitter’s, but four years, like Mr. Miles in 2011. Unlike Mr. Vitter, however, Mr. Miles continues to screw up things he shouldn’t, such as offensive game plans, building quarterback confidence, creating an powerful offensive line in his own image and recruiting depth along the defensive front seven. Now, the former Oklahoma State head coach is probably preparing to coach his last game for the LSU Tigers when they meet Texas A&M in Baton Rouge on Saturday. I always attend the A&M game, if for nothing other than the incredible precision of the Corps of Cadets’ halftime marching band show. They say a computer cannot duplicate the intricate movements of this band. What a juxtaposition from the last 11 years in Tigertown, where one Les Miles cannot even comprehend with slate and chalk the intricacies of running a 21st century football program.

It’s embarrassing when your coach may be an idiot savant and I don’t mean that in a derogatory way. His communication skills are frozen, lost in some backwater Midwestern vista or perhaps from some medical condition in his past. It’s been the elephant in the room for years, fiercely protected by an overzealous Sports Information Director and Athletic Director, curried by pitty-pat sports writers and broadcasters who include Miles’ communication gaffes in the quaint and charming company of Yogi Berra’s ability to butcher the Kings’ English. But Berra was a competent athlete, one of the five greatest catchers in all of Major League baseball history. And his malaprops were the kind we are used to hearing when folks confuse one term for a similar word or phrase that creates a humorous moment. Miles’ moments are not all that humorous or recently, very charming. His “insights” are bland statements of the obvious and repetitious, accepted by a cloying and adoring core of monied boosters and fans with purple-and-gold colored glasses. But this program has been skirting disaster for years. The only two thoughtful hires since the railroading of Charlies McClendon in 1980 were the choices of Bill Arnsbarger following Jerry Stovall in 1983 and the retention of the man everyone in purple and gold loves to hate - Nick Saban - in 2000. Arnsbarger was upfront with the Tigers; he told LSU his first year as coach that he wanted to become the Athletic Director at Florida and took that position after three very successful regular season performances in Baton Rouge. All he did was right the Florida program and hire Steve Spurrier as head football coach. Saban, you know about. A determined, curmudgeon of a man, Saban was still on the learning curve during his five years with the Tigers. But he won a legitimate

national championship, brought LSU sports into the 21st century and paved the way for Coach Miles to walk into the team’s auditorium eleven years ago and begin his odyssey. It started with a last-minute road game in Arizona following Hurricane Katrina with the first of many improbable wins for Miles, followed by a first game loss, the only Monday night game ever in Tiger Stadium and the first of many inexplicable defeats for Miles. Since then, the grass chewing, doofus-acting Miles has been a laughable legend in virtually every athletic and media gathering place. But the string has run out, despite his recruitment and winning prowess.

Yes, this team gets four star recruits and frankly, they’re not that much different than five star recruits. Coaching and motivation are the determining factors and Nick Saban is much better at it. Saban learned much of it in Baton Rouge but his time there was a few years too early in Saban’s development to really make it a major part of the atmosphere in Tigertown. When you take the traditions and passion of Alabama Tide football and combine them with the perfect storm of one Nick Saban at his obnoxious peak, you’ve got a tough act to follow. Nicky learned his unwavering will and determination polishing vehicles on his dad’s car lot in northern West Virginia (really?!?) and we just don’t see or hear that type of passion from Mr. Miles. Oh, he keeps it close and wins a few against the Tide but never with the finality and sense of domination that the Tide brings against the Tigers. LSU wins are more about extraordinary players making extraordinary plays (2007, 2011) than coaching acumen. Saban’s teams also don’t play down to the level of a lesser program. They may trail, even as late as the mid-third quarter, but they find a way to come back in a convincing fashion. Yes, Saban could have take this 2015 Tiger team and beat his 2015 Alabama team, despite the obvious defensive superiority of the Tide’s front seven. The rest of their team is not as good, talent-wise, as the Tigers this year. But their attitude is world-class. And that starts with a coach that won’t tolerant any garbage from coaches, players, fans, media, boosters or students and knows how to answer questions like a normal successful head football coach should be able to do, although with a permanent chip on his shoulder. Saban’s not that tough to interview; just ask well-crafted questions and don’t back down when he gives you his famous intolerant glare. He wants to see how tough, persistent and hopefully, intelligent you are.

I didn’t think things could get worse for the Tigers after Tuscaloosa, but they did. They made the Arkansas Razorbacks look like a top five team in Tiger Stadium for most of the evening. Fellow college offensive football dinosaur Bert Bielema tore the Tigers a new one and the Hogs heretofore miserable rushing defense didn’t look much weaker than ‘Bama’s on that Saturday night. And then Ole Miss. A first for Miles. And now the end, regardless of what happens against A&M. Oh, the usual verbally perplexing pablum came dribbling out of Miles’ mouth yet another week while star-struck sideline felines stick a microphone up to “the Mad Hatter.” To get some further background on Miles, I turned to quotations from him, Bo Schembechler and Nick Saban. What a world of difference in philosophy, expression and communication! I didn’t look up quotes from Urban Meyers or other successful coaches of his ilk but I have no doubt they would parallel Saban’s thoughts much more than Bo or Les’s. Bo had his Ohio State; Miles has his Alabama. But Miles’ rarely-used ability to inspire and rally his players when the game is on the line trickles down to contests other than those against ‘Bama while Bo could usually rally his troops against all comers except the Buckeyes. Not to say the Tigers haven’t rallied against teams the majority of the time (think - 4th quarter). But much of that determination comes from within the players’ core, learned during practice or before their time at LSU, not from some halftime or sideline talk or adjustment from the coaching staff at LSU.

LSU is not a dominating team this year. They are thin and their backups are underachieving at defensive tackle and linebacker. Things are exacerbated with the Tigers’ terrible special team play (hear that, Bradley Dale Peveto?) and their continued inability to create a credible pass protection mentality to give Brandon Harris an extra half second or full second to find that tight end or breaking wideout. Yes, their achievements the first eight weeks were laudable. But game preparation against Alabama is still stuck in the late 2011 mode. And Les…..did you ever think of flanking Leonard Fournette to give him a chance to catch the ball in the flat before being crushed by a defensive lineman/linebacker or three? Oh, you tried that a couple of times against Ar-Kansas, late in the game and once or twice against Ole Miss. Late in the game seems to be the norm for you, Les. And now quarterback Brandon Harris’s September and October successes are a thing of the past. Goes to coaching, Les. Real, intense, communication coaching. Are there no scenarios where you would actually change a game plan that doesn’t run through the Bo Schembechler school of coaching to try and overcome a powerful opponent?

The disappointment with LSU also goes to their inability to rebound from bad breaks, like in the beginning the third quarter against Alabama three weeks ago. Brandon Harris throws his first interception, not entirely his fault, and ’Bama rolls right on in for a touchdown. Hey, it was Harris’s first interception and he was the last quarterback in major college football to throw one this year. One, where was the LSU defense? And two, where was the team’s will to come back, throw off that INT and drive for a tying touchdown? ’Bama has it; the Tigers don’t. End of story. It’s the same mindset they usually have when they travel to Georgia or Auburn or Florida. They get all nervous coming on to the field and it takes them a long time, if ever, to regain any confidence they had when they left the locker room. You’ve got to have the game in your head and the Tigers don’t. Another case in point: Look at what many rent-a-teams do against LSU in Tiger Stadium, where the talent level is radically disproportional. Their bravado is something to see and the Tigers go meekly along with it for at least the first half. Teams don’t fear coming into Tiger Stadium any more. They know we’re loud and proud but not that determined and nasty on the field. The Tigers really need some kick-butt leadership infusion and it hasn’t been there for the past several years. When your head coach makes Ben Carson seem dynamic, there is no such thing as kick-butt leadership infusion.

And now, the end. It’s not a foregone conclusion, but really, what else can LSU do? Another year of Miles? Miles booster, CBS announcer Gary Danielson, apologized for Miles all game long Saturday, but it’s not the youth of the talent, the injuries or the losses of recruits from the program that hurts as much as it is from the man who would be Michigan coach, but he doesn’t know how to want it enough and Michigan didn’t want him enough as well. His mishandling of the Michigan situation should tell you all you need to know about Miles’ legacy, along with a gift national championship in 2007, brought to him by players who wanted it more than he did, a gritty regular season classic against Alabama in 2011 that was poisoned by a complete lack of preparation in the rematch championship game, his unfounded and childish anger directed at the quarterback who brought them to that position and a series of incredibly dumb comments, insights, coaching moves and interviews over the years, the like of which even Curly Hallman could not duplicate. Go quietly into that good night, Les. That’s a distortion of a quotation from a book read by adults. Jarrett Lee could read it to you. In English.

So what are the best kinds of trees to get? Well, believe it or not, if you properly care for the tree then you can pick out a tree based on its color, texture, or shape. ‘Frazer Fir’ and ‘Douglas Fir’ trees have a nice blue green color to their needles and when crushed have a

pleasant flavor. ‘Noble Fir’ is as noble as you thought it was. These trees have gorgeous shapes and short stiff branches. This may come in handy if you have heavier ornaments to hang on the tree. ‘Colorado Blue Spruce’ trees have excellent pyramidal form and beautiful blue-grey needles. ‘Scotch Pine’ trees are bright green and are often sold as a value priced option. As for proper care, the best you can do for your fresh cut tree is to provide it a bowl of water as soon as possible. The National Christmas Tree Association recommends putting the tree in water within 6-8 hours of having a fresh cut made. A fresh cut is the onsite removal of the bottom ½ inch of trunk. You should check the tree’s water bowl daily and provide enough water to keep the trunk submerged. That is the key to keeping needles on your

fresh cut Christmas tree.

WINTER IN NOVEMBER? She did it last year and she did it again this year. Mother Nature sent us as an early Christmas present of cold weather this past weekend. We all know that its gets cold in the winter time. Plants, on the other hand, do not “know” this. They respond to certain environmental cues that occur every year like the shortening of day light, the change in quality of light, and decrease in temperature. Things get a little interesting when you start growing plants from different growing climates. We have all experienced plant death from freezing temperatures in our gardens. Those beautiful tropical plants like hibiscus, mandevilla vine, and bougainvilla are not native to southern Louisiana and therefor are not able to prepare for the winter time like our native trees, shrubs and flowers. They will need some assistance in order to keep them from freezing. You will need to cover tropical and semi tropical plants with something to help keep the plants above freezing temperatures. You can accomplish this by using several different types of material. Plastic visqueen, frost cloth, agribond, and household sheets are all effective. The trick is to make sure that you are covering them to the ground on all sides. The idea is to cover the plants late in the afternoon on the night before. By covering these plants we are actually making a temporary greenhouse and using the trapped heat inside to give tender plants some protection. Last but not least, remember to remove the coverings as soon as temperatures begin to return to normal, especially if you used visqueen or other plastic type materials. You could cause harm by leaving it on throughout the day.
