The Louisiana State Police has issued a Level II Endangered/Missing Child Media Advisory on behalf of the Harris County, Texas, Sheriff’s Office for a 6 year old child taken by Harvey Eugene York, Jr., of Zwolle, Louisiana.The child, Alexis “Lexi” Johnson, is a 6-year-old white female with brown hair and brown eyes. She is approximately 3’7” tall and weighs 63 pounds. Her hair is shoulder length and she wears glasses.Harvey Eugene York, Jr., is a 40 year old white male with brown hair and green eyes. He is approximately 5’7” tall and weighs 160 pounds.York is not the child’s father. York and the child were last seen on Sunday, October 11, 2015, in Houston, Texas, in York’s 2000 Ford F-150 pickup truck bearing Louisiana license plate F163202. The truck is blue with a silver stripe. York is believed to be heading to Louisiana.Anyone having information as to the whereabouts of Alexis “Lexi” Johnson or Harvey Eugene York, Jr., should immediately contact the Harris County (TX) Sheriff’s Office at 713-221-6000, 911 or the Louisiana State Police at 225-925-6536.

Louisiana voters will make a number of important decisions in the next ten days that will give indications of which way the state is headed. The most important decision will come when voters decide who will replace Bobby Jindal as governor. Jindal hasn’t been governor for most of his last term
of office and four political middleweights are among those seeking his seat. David Vitter is the best known candidate but the one with the most amount of baggage, including being a lifetime politician and the object of a prostitution scandal. Vitter is not exactly cut from the same senatorial cloth as many of his predecessors and any move here cannot be looked at as a move to seek a higher office. Vitter is just too wishy-washy to be a presidential candidate and the Republicans already have a full deck of those this election cycle. Scott Angelle and Jay Dardenne are not sexy candidates either and low-res smear tactics against both candidates by Vitter’s camp don’t really appear to be working. At worst, Dardenne would be another David Treen but maybe a boring governor is what this state needs at this time. John Bel Edwards out of Amite probably would serve as the best governor but he’s a Democrat. So voters are going to have to decide whether they want a tainted U.S. Senator, pick from between two less than distinguished other Republican politicians or go for a small town state representative who has become this year’s dark horse, albeit a Democrat. For the Lieutenant Governor’s seat, Jeffersonian John Young appears to be putting all his eggs in the tourism basket, where the office should be strong, while Billy Nungesser is busy telling his Horatio Alger story of being a self-made, honest businessman and politician. Tourism should be the thrust of this office and noting the lack of progress with tourism in Plaquemines Parish, perhaps Young would be the better candidate. No one doubts Billy’s energy and ability to make things happen but the Lieutenant Governor’s role is sorta like being Vice-President and being an overachiever doesn’t jibe with the limitations of a backup political office. Major chafing could occur. The real choices come in St Bernard Parish, where the strongest slate of parish presidential candidates in many years seek to oust the embarrassment known as David Peralta. A runoff is virtually assured as politicians, legacies and polished businessmen seek this troubled office in ‘DA PARISH!’ (Take THAT, Craig Taffaro!) It will be circus week later this month as the field continues to seek enough plurality to make a runoff. Maybe the good folks down the road can find a nominee that can avoid scandalizing or embarrassing the parish this go ’round. In St. Tammany, the Sheriff’s race is the thing. Three strong candidates, including the incumbent, are running a pretty clean campaign to this point. However, there is still time for this thing to get nasty and become the subject of countless coffee klatches and luncheons before election day. Chip Bankston’s run against a first term, interim assessor should be interesting as well as unprecedented. Most of the other races are yawners. Our pick for the spiciest - the governor’s race.
IS OUR STATE ON THE VERGE OF A MOVE TOWARDS CHANGE?

Southeast Louisiana knows what it’s like to take a series of body blows from Mother Nature. So when most of coastal and inland South Carolina was inundated from rain from a low front along the coast and the exacerbations of Hurricane Joaquin, LSU officials expedited the switching of venues from Columbia, South Carolina to Baton Rouge for the LSU Tigers/South Carolina Gamecocks football game last weekend. More than the stadia were switched; South Carolina became the home team and the perks and privileges of that status were made available to them. They were the home team; they picked the jersey colors, they had the larger number of players to suit up, they blocked any high school prospect from attending the game as a guest of LSU since the NCAA doesn’t allow “visiting” teams to host prospects. LSU’s band played their alma mater first; the band formed a partial greeting line on the field for South Carolina and they were not booed as is customary when the normal “visitors” enter the field before the game. It was a class act by all concerned. Billboards in support of South Carolina were hastily erected; Red Cross volunteers manned collection stations for gathering relief funds, everyone was lovey-dovey towards the visitors, which we normally are anyway but more so this time. What was not so classy was the way LSU handled the sale of tickets for this game. Season ticket holders were sent an email stating that suite and club box ticket holders
would have the right to buy their normal seats with as many as eight extra tickets. However, the 60,000 or so regular Joe season ticket holders were told they could buy game seats but their actual season ticket seats “may not be available” but they could buy any available seat. “Waves” of purchasers were set up, based on TAF priority points. Then the ticket holders were informed they could bring “one bottle” of water to the stadium THIS ONE TIME because concession supplies and vendors might not have been available in the necessary numbers. Wow! One whole bottle of water! Hey, administration - only 42,000 attended this game. That’s 60,000 empty seats. Hope all of us season ticket holders got lucky and got their own seats. And since concessions were such an issue, why not let people bring their own food and drinks (non-alcoholic) to the game, THIS ONE TIME? My prediction is with such thoughtful p.r. moves, another five to 10,000 tickets might have been sold, helping out the South Carolina Gamecocks that much more. But then again, the key word here is “thoughtful”. Thoughtful to the loyal fan who does not sit in the $6,000-$20,000 spaces, who comes to the games year after year, though the non-existent rain at Tiger Stadium and the heat and humidity. There was even a snafu whether parking was to be free for this game. But all this goes to time and other management…something LSU football seems to mess up on a regular basis.

According to the Herb Society of America, the definition of an herb is a plant used for flavoring, food, fragrance or medicine that dies to the ground after flowering and does not have woody stems. At first this definition sounds like it meets our expectations but what about bay leaves and rosemary? Both will remain upright year around and both easily display woody stems which obviously contradict our neat and tidy definition from earlier. Of course, rules were meant to be broken! Over the years the definition has been modified to fit all of our plants that we refer to as herbs. To me, the most practical definition of them all is: “In its essential spirit, in its proper garden
meaning an herb is a garden plant which has been cherished for itself and for a use and has not come down to uses as a decorative thing.” We grow herbs on purpose. Whether it’s for its fragrance or flavor, there is a reason you planted there.
Most people would wait until spring time in order to start thinking about planting a garden but herb gardeners are a little different. Many herbs are considered perennial plants and actually benefit from a fall planting. When trying a new herb for the first time do a little research to figure what USDA Hardiness zones it falls to help you determine whether or not it would be a likely candidate to try. Location of your garden is almost of a similar concern. It will need at least 6 hours of sunlight, a well-draining soil and a location that you can see from the kitchen! Do not make this a chore; keep it close and easily accessible. Some of the herbs that should be planted now include parsley (both flat Italian and curly leaf), sage, rosemary, thyme, chives, lavender, cilantro and mint. Check your local garden center or home improvement center for their selections of herb seeds and transplants.
PERSIMMONSAlthough some have never tried the wonderful fruit we call a persimmon I’m sure they have at least seen this peculiar tree with its display of appropriately-timed, orange colored fruit. Female persimmon trees (both native and non-native) will produce fruit this time of year. Fruit will remain on the tree and ripen even as the leaves drop in the fall. In fact, it makes them very easy to identify this time of year. The native persimmon, Diospyros virginiana, is a small fruit tree native to the Eastern United States. They reach average heights around 15 feet tall. Outdoor enthusiasts love native, female persimmons (only females bear fruit) because they attract wildlife of all sizes from song birds to turkey and whitetail deer. The Japanese persimmon, Diospyros kaki, is obviously a different species but it produces the same fruit we all know and love, except larger and sweeter! Because of this fact, the Japanese persimmon has been bred more extensively, giving the grower more variety to choose from.
Persimmons are tough, tolerant trees that are fairly easy to care for hence why you often see them being recommended for novice home growers. Generally with most all plantings I do recommend a soil test to determine whether or not we need to mix in any soil amendments before planting. As with all fruit trees, you need full sun in order to produce a plentiful crop. You can get by with 6-8 hours but look for an area that receives at least 10 hours of full direct sunlight. Persimmons are dep rooted therefor display excellent drought resistance so access to irrigation water is not an immediate concern. Plant trees at least 20 feet away from the southern side of larger structures and buildings. For a grouping of trees, plant each one 15 feet from the other so that they will have the appropriate room to grow and develop. As for particular varieties, you will come across two different groups of persimmons: astringent and non-astringent. Astringent persimmons will need to remain on the tree until they are fully ripe and soft to touch before they can be eaten fresh. ‘Taninashi’ and ‘Hachiya’ are two often recommended varieties to choose from. Non-astringent varieties do not have to be fully ripe when picked. They make a nice backyard project because they can be eaten firm like an apple or you can wait for them to fully ripen like the astringent varieties. ‘Tamopan’, ‘Fuyu’ and ‘Suruga’ are excellent non-astringent cultivars to choose from. Get out there, take advantage of this nice weather and plant a couple of persimmons!
