AFTER EARLY AM FIRE, ROB HOWELL
“BEARING UP” WELL Barely 24 hours after an overnight fire devastated his popular restaurant across from the main Slidell Post Office, Rob Howell was on the roof of his other eatery Tuesday morning, checking out another air conditioning problem. Howell was fixing a minor drip from the a/c unit as patrons ate their first breakfast in the Gause Boulevard restaurant, Bears. Early Monday morning, a reported electrical connection malfunction involving Sunrise on Second’s a/c unit sparked a fire which gutted the place in less than 30 minutes. Howell, who has been a fixture in Slidell for the past six years, didn’t waste any time clearing out the salvagables from Sunrise and making sure customers would have a place to dine the next day. Bears, the long-time popular Covington restaurant, had expanded into Slidell a few years ago. Howell took it over last year and solidified the operation. Before Tuesday, Bears had never served breakfast nor had any other restaurant in that location for the past 25 years or so.
Rob was too busy to speculate on the long-term fallout from the fire. He is looking at the possibility of rebuilding or perhaps securing a new location. Right now, Rob wants to make sure his breakfast club stays populated and his Sunrise employes can enjoy future sunrises at Bears, located about a mile and a half from his 2nd Street location.

START serves the St. Tammany area as a resource to help neglected and homeless animals. START places dogs and cats in foster homes, providing care and medical attention, while they await adoption.

By Tony Onellion The annual trek to Baton Rouge to watch our beloved Tigers play football begins in September - a week after the Houston area LSU fans get their wonderful loyalty reward by having the first LSU game in their city since Gerald Ford was the president of the United States. The overwhelming generosity and marketing acumen of LSU continues to astound anyone who actually knows how to market and be generous. For if you want to spend upwards of $5,000 per year per seat for the privilege of watching the Tigers in Death Valley, you can get booze in your seat and parking reasonably close to the stadium. For the 90,000 or so regular Joes and students - well, screw us! LSU will continue to patchwork a venerable stadium, not use the former dorm rooms for expansion and basically insist you be happy with the gorgeous entrances that we didn’t pay for nor did the university as generous donors and the TAF took care of that tab. Now the school wants to place “tier pricing” on the remaining non-Alabama tickets this year. That means some faceless entity determines the price of your ticket based on variables such as opposing school ranking, stadium location, weather, weekend and probably the stock market closing bell on Thursdays before each game (unless the game is on Thursday. Or Friday. Or even Monday like the Tennessee game nine years ago). Who cares? Geaux Tigers and Geaux to Hell Old Faithful blue collar fans.
For the first time ever, every visiting school except for Alabama returned part of their ticket allotment to LSU to sell to the Tiger faithful. The SEC Network comes on board this year and this means the average non-rabid fan won’t bother fighting the b.s. that accompanies a trip to Baton Rouge but will stay home and watch the games on the tube. So, the less than stellar concessions and Tiger merchandise will sit on the shelves for a longer time. The overwhelming success of the SEC has been built on the unbridled support of millions of Southerners who will do anything and spend anything to “Roll Tide, War Eagle, Go Big Orange, Gator Chomp or Geaux Tiger!” The overwhelming greed of the SEC now comes into play but those who have built facilities like Bryant Denny Stadium, the new Texas A&M stadium and the changes at Mississippi State will continue to feed off the benefits, at least partially, of a red hot product. Those schools like Ole Miss, Tennessee and LSU will begin to suffer. Especially LSU. For the powers that be in the Athletic Department of the Old War Skull don’t give a damn about what you and I think about anything unless the check to the school’s athletic department contains at least five figures to the left of the decimal point.
Me, I have a choice. I’ve put my money where my mouth is and sold my season tickets to a good friend whose son starts LSU this fall. I took that money and a bit moreand purchased two SBLs for the new Levis Stadium in Santa Clara. So- you joined the rich set, you Left Coast Hippie! Well, not really. Yes, I’m from that area. Yes, I’ve been a 49er fan a few years longer than I’ve been an LSU fan. But as I explained last year, this is as much of a business move as a fan move. For those not easily bored, let me reiterate.
A SBL is a Stadium Building License which essentially gives the holder ownership of the seats in the facility for any and all events held in that venue. You are given ten years to pay for the licenses. You can choose to buy any or all of the event tickets, including: Paul McCartney concert tickets, major league soccer, Cal/Oregon football in October, the Pac 12 Championship game, high end high school football jamborees and any NFL playoff games in the stadium and of course, 49er season tickets. In return, you get an account where you can sell your tickets for the going market rate and entree into a football atmosphere that heretofore could only be dreamt about. So you go to a couple of games a year, sell the rest for enough profit to pay for the license fee and season tickets for the 49ers and perhaps both trips to the coast for the game. Perfectly legal and acceptable. Right now, tickets for 49er home games are going for anywhere from double to seven times face value on the aftermarket. Once a person tires of all this, the SBLs are sellable commodities like real estate and we know what appreciation real estate has in Silicon Valley. Essentially, I might be able to attend two to three games a year for free and make a profit on the licenses when I no longer want to or can go to the games. And take in an LSU game. And even a Saints game. Can’t beat Dat!
Descriptions of the new Levis Stadium could take another two columns. Suffice it to say, the place rocks. Less than 69,000 seats, no renovations for at least 30 years, if ever, all wi-fi with chair back seats and t.v.s everywhere. And a stadium app, where you can store your tickets, order your concessions without leaving your seat, watch replays on your mobile device and check out restroom usage and anticipated waiting time. Much of this technology has been in play in the NBA and one or two major league baseball parks but never implemented before in a football stadium You can drink domestic, imported, tap and bottled beer and a wide range of wines in the stadium. Plus 18 entrees. All at the concession stands. Plus a museum and team store. Public transportation less than a football field away from the North end zone gates. It’s safe, weather’s great, it’s outdoors, no crappy seats, nosebleed only on the east side and that’s 40 rows lower than Tiger Stadium. All this without buying a box or suite or having to hobnob. Yes, you should be a fan but come on!! Niner fans in South Louisiana are not too hard to find. And does anyone down here hate going to San Francisco for a long weekend or vacation? They love us South Luzianans out west as much as we love going out to San Francisco and the wine country. I mean….it could be Atlanta or Tampa Bay and who needs that? Or the relatively soulless Charlotte, North Carolina. (Note): the first event at the stadium was last Saturday - a major league soccer game with an attendance of 43,000. There were opening day glitches: problems with the sound system, long lines, traffic and parking problems - but the organization has another two weeks to work on these issues before the opening NFL exhibition game against Denver. Every new facility, including the Superdome, had an adjustment period when they opened. The Superdome was and is a fabulous venue and was a tremendous boost to a city not showing much growth at the time.
Back at Tigerland, the decision makers are talking about building a new ten to 12 million dollar athletic dorm and restaurant…..er, cafeteria. Inside Tiger Stadium the decision makers want to see if they can increase prices a dollar across the board for a limited and shopworn product line. Hell, you can’t even get a spoon half the time to eat the overpriced frozen lemonade. And when have they ever had enough hot chocolate or coffee on a cold game day or night? Or enough paper towels and soap in the restrooms? How about those condiments presented in a manner worse than at Angola? (nice 5 gallon jalapeño jar there, guys! Don’t you like the 5 gallon pump-don’t-work-half-the-time mustard and ketchup holders too! Relish? Use the community spoon! Napkins? Grab a bundle when we throw them out there. Plenty of square inches to spread out your purchase and slather on the condiments. Yummy)!
Those who want to see 100,000 fans in Tiger Stadium will have one chance to do so this year when the Tide visit in November. Otherwise, you can entertain yourself by counting the empty seats in the North end zone. And in the upper upper decks. And don’t look too closely into those expensive boxes. They might not be completely filled.
Maybe half to 3/4ths filled. While the football Tigers are tearing up the field, the bean counters will be tiering up the prices and the long-time regular guy fan will be tearing up his eyes as the innocence, affordability and fun of college football continues to erode at an astonishing rate. Just wait ’til they allow amateur players to do one and done on the collegiate football level. Won’t happen? Tons of dead presidents in green and black say it will happen sooner than later.

Deadly Advice
A DEADLY TURN - One fisherman we see on a regular basis here in Slidell is Captain
Dudley Vandenborre, the designer of the “Deadly Dudley” lure series and fisherman
emeritus. Dudley sends much of his product to his customers from my wife’s shipping
and mailing center in the south area of the city and through the years we have come to
know him and his family. Dudley recently had open heart surgery and missed most of
the earlier spring speck runs in the area. We’ve been actively working with Dudley to
grace our reports with his fishing knowledge since last year but pending media projects
and other matters had delayed things.
Until now. Dudley Vandenborre will begin a fishing feature this issue entitled “DEADLY
ADVICE”. Dudley will take your questions about fishing techniques, tackle and fishing

SLIME MOLDS ON TURFGRASSESUSUALLY NOT SERIOUS PROBLEM
Slime molds cause concern to many home gardeners when they occur suddenly in warm weather after heavy rains or watering.
Slime molds are primitive fungi that grow on low-lying vegetation, such as lawn grasses, bedded flowers, mulches, ground covers, bases of trees and some other areas. The fungi feed on decaying organic matter, bacteria and other fungi.
During or after humid, wet weather from late spring through fall, the slime mold comes to the soil surface and creeps over vegetation in round or irregular patches that vary from several inches to several feet in diameter.
The reproductive stage is the only one most gardeners ever see. The fruiting structures are usually a grayish-white, bluish-gray, black or white. They are filled with dark masses of powdery spores that easily can be rubbed off the leaf or stem.
Slime molds are nonparasitic and, technically, do not cause disease. They merely use plant leaves and stems to support their reproductive structures. However, slight damage may occur when leaves are smothered or shaded for several days to a week or longer by the molds.
No control is necessary. If practical, break up the unsightly spore masses by vigorously raking, brushing or hosing down with a stream of water. Mowing grass usually removes most of the spores.

DOGS MAY BE POISONEDBY COMMON HOUSEHOLD ITEMS
Mushrooms that are appearing in lawns pose a toxic risk to dogs. Dogs of any age can be affected, but young animals are more curious, so they may be at greater risk. Some may need an unpleasant experience with mushrooms to learn not to eat them.
The effects produced by toxins in mushrooms vary from mild signs of an upset stomach to lethal organ damage. Poisoning in cats occurs less often, probably because they are less likely to eat fungi.
There are a number of types of mushroom poisons. If a pet is seen eating toadstools or vomits pieces of them, action is needed. Samples of each type in the yard and the one known to have been ingested should be collected for identification. Put the samples in a paper bag and bring them to the veterinarian with the pet.
Most exposures result in mild stomach and intestinal upset because the type of mushroom eaten was not highly toxic. Signs of poisoning may be delayed for several hours after ingestion. When that happens, the illness that develops may not be related to mushroom exposure. In fact, when amanita species are involved, onset of vomiting and diarrhea are delayed, lasting for a few hours only to be followed by signs of liver and kidney failure.
Treatment for mild cases of mushroom poisoning may not be necessary. Vomiting can be induced to eliminate some of the material if done within two hours. Activated charcoal and a laxative can speed elimination from the bowel. When nervous system signs are pronounced, sedation may be necessary.
Pet owners should dispose of toadstools by putting them in the garbage. Removing the temptation may save a trip to the animal hospital.
Some ornamental plants are potential sources of pet poisonings.
Dogs, especially puppies and dogs that are home alone most of the day, often chew on plants. Pet birds may eat bits of leaves put into their cages by a child. Many ornamental plants contain one or more toxicants capable of harming these animals.
The important factor that prevents this from being a frequent problem is the amount eaten—the dose consumed. Azaleas, for example, may be fatal to a 60 pound goat that eats 1 or 2 pounds of leaves. A dog suffering from boredom generally will not eat a comparable amount of a plant. An exception was the miniature poodle that wolfed down a potted miniature azalea and was sick for two days.
A German shepherd was severely poisoned after eating more than 50 berries and other parts of the plant yesterday, today and tomorrow. Alkaloids in the plant produced convulsions and then coma, which persisted for days.
Seeds produced by the palm-like Cycas revoluta plant caused life-threatening liver damage in a young dog years ago. A cocker spaniel chewed and swallowed the root of “mother-in-law’s tongue” which resulted in persistent diarrhea for a week.
Veterinarians occasionally receive calls from dog owners concerning dieffenbachia or dumbcane. This plant contains irritants that cause an intense burning sensation of the mouth and lips.
Dogs are protected by their ability to vomit readily, resulting in the elimination of some toxicants before much is absorbed. Highly toxic things like the nuts of the tung oil tree or castor bean seeds can be fatal.
A pet budgie offered a bite or two of some of these plants probably will not survive. The birds also are sensitive to the avocado.
