Words to GROW by!RE-POTTING PLANTS

Now is an excellent time to give your shut-in house plants a chance to spread their roots by re-potting them. Re-potting gives confined root systems a chance to expand and also provides new and loose soil for such growth.The frequency of re-potting largely depends on the growth rate of the plant. Active plants may need larger pots each year, while their slower-growing cousins may have to be re-set only every two to three years. I recommend going up one pot size at a time when re-potting.First, water the plant thoroughly several hours before re-potting, then turn the pot and plant upside down and tap the pot gently to loosen it from the old container. Never yank a plant and its soil ball out by the stem.If the roots of the plant are heavily matted or woven together, loosen the ball to remove about 1/2 of the old outer soil. This encourages new roots to grow away from the tight circular pattern once the plant is re-potted.Place the plant in the new pot, holding it at the depth at which it originally grew. Add potting mixture around the plant, while gently tamping the soil to eliminate air pockets. Leave at least one-half inch of space at the top of the pot for watering. After re-potting, water thoroughly and do not wet it again until the surface has become slightly dry.Soil for house plants must be drained well, so the physical makeup of the potting medium is very important. If ordinary garden soil is used, it packs excessively after several watering’s.A desirable potting mixture is one which contains adequate organic matter and coarse soil particles to ensure drainage and air for good root formation and growth. Most house plants will grow in a soil prepared of five parts (by volume) of good garden loam soil, four parts peat most or leaf mold and one part sharp builders’ sand.

POISON IVYPoison ivy vines are starting to leaf out again and are going into their most troublesome stage.The irritating substance in poison ivy is the oily sap in the leaves, flowers, fruit, stem, bark and roots. The plant is poisonous even after long drying but is particularly irritating in the spring and early summer when it is full of sap. Dead vines remain potent for many months.Most cases of ivy poisoning are caused by direct contact with the plant, but some are caused by handling clothing, garden equipment and pets which have been contaminated with the oily sap. People differ greatly in sensitivity to the weed.If you realize that you have accidentally handled poison ivy or brushed against it, wash your skin as soon as possible. Yellow laundry soap is best. Lather several times and rinse in running water after each sudsing. This should remove or reduce the effect of the irritating substance which hasn’t already penetrated the skin.The first symptom noticed after contact with the plant is a burning and itchingsensation. Poison ivy may be found as a climbing vine and as an upright or trailing shrub. Coming in many forms and colors, it has the constant characteristic of leaf clusters that always come in three’s.It may be found clinging to stone and brick houses and climbing trees and poles. It also grows abundantly along fences, paths and roadways and often is partially hidden by other foliage. The leaves vary in length from one to four inches. They are green and glossy in the summer and red or russet in the spring and fall. The fruit is white and waxy and resembles mistletoe.Glyphosate, known by various trade names, including “Roundup”, is effective against poison ivy. It will kill whatever green leaves it touches, but leaves no soil residues.Now is the time to cut climbing vines 2-3 feet above the ground, and then wait until the leaves flush out and spray with the appropriate chemical. When cutting the vines be careful to avoid contact with splattering sap.With most chemicals, more than one application will probably be necessary. VISITING A SOUTHERN JEWEL by Tony Onellion

Last week I was able to take a trip to Savannah, Georgia for a free publication conference. It’s a city that understands the blend of history, culture, food and entertainment with the modern concerns of safety and sanitation better than just about anywhere in the U.S.

If you go to Savannah, you’re exposed to one of the three most historic cities in the South and one of the top five port cities in the country.

But you’re not exposed to decay, danger or olfactory assault. Simply put, Savannah is a Disneyland for middle America. It combines the sophisticated charm of Charleston and New Orleans without the sense of watching your back or taking along an economy size container of sanitary wipes. You can walk the streets of Savannah at midnight and see virtually nothing of the perceived menaces present in other Southern cities. Few policemen are watching fewer shady characters. This, in a community where Irish pubs rank fourth in the country (behind New York, Chicago and Boston) and first in per capita Irish pubs, offering visitors one of the four best St. Patrick Day celebrations in the United States. It’s a town of ghosts and ghost stories and recently a city of really good regular Joe and sophisticated eateries. San Franciscans, Des Moineans and Texans can all have fun here as well as the snowbirds from the Northeast on their way to Florida. Because in Savannah, you are also at ground zero for the finest golf in North America…most great courses are between them and Charleston but Augusta is closer to Savannah. And the food is mostly what New Orleans offers to the average non-Nawlins visitor…only less expensive. No, it’s not New Orleans cooking…but it’s really good.

Savannah’s old section is actually more fun to traverse than the French Quarter. There’s more of it open to the public in the sense that you don’t hesitate to walk into an establishment as you might in New Orleans. As mentioned, it doesn’t stink, it doesn’t have street hustlers or visible homeless. But it has old European character and a sense of adventure. It is a romantic place to visit. Yes, the decadence and sense of sinful Vegas are not present in Savannah but that metric should be out of most people’s bucket list by the time they’re in their ‘60s. The city is loaded with young professionals…Millennials who know where they are going. New Orleans, for all its charm and sophistication, cannot keep enough top-flight young folks to make the city what it needs to be. Those of our best and brightest have traditionally fled to both coasts and recently, to Atlanta, Texas and North Carolina, for opportunity. Now they have another destination in Savannah with lots of educational and professional opportunities and a gateway location to some of the most beautiful land in the South and the U.S. And Savannah gives them a sense of history and gravitas.

New Orleans could learn a great deal from Savannah, if corruption and greed weren’t standing in its way. What makes New Orleans tourism great is its people - the thousands of generally underpaid workers of fourth, fifth and sixth generation New Orleans families - who truly believe

in the great spirit and mojo of the Big Easy. But little is truly easy in New Orleans as too many young entrepreneurs give up because of the set way of doing things there. And all the waiters, cooks and musicians cannot make up for the lack of vision the city possesses. Maybe some of the leaders in New Orleans will take a trip to Savannah soon….not to have a whizzing contest with that community but to actually see what good they are doing with many of the same traits New Orleans shares.

Savannah. New Orleans Lite. And bright. And safe. And fun. And opportunistic. No floods, no hurricanes.
