Words to GROW by!Fruit plants may be pruned as late as March. To prune effectively you need to understand what happens to a plant when it’s pruned. A foremost principle is that with every plant there is a definite relationship between root growth and top growth. If one is reduced, a compensating reduction in the other will occur. For example, in “bare root” transplanting it’s common for some roots to be severed or injured. To compensate for this loss and the shock of transplanting, it’s a good idea to remove about a third of the top growth.Likewise, severe pruning of top growth disturbs the equilibrium of the normal function of the roots. The plant compensates by producing new shoots and branches. Pruning the top promotes the production of cells and the use of carbohydrates or food supply. Accordingly, it promotes vegetative growth and tends to retard reproductive activity. This may or may not be desirable, depending on the plant involved.“Heading back” a plant stimulates development of more lateral growing points by removing the effects of growth-inhibiting hormones which are produced by terminal buds and which normally prevent the development of lateral buds. When the terminal buds are removed, the production of these hormones is halted and the lateral buds are free to develop. For this reason, top pruning creates a more compact, dense, much branched growth.Trees such as peach and plum produce fruit on the previous season’s growth. These trees are pruned for structure as well as production. Young trees are trained to develop a frame of scaffold limbs strong enough to bear large crops of fruit without breaking. Older trees are pruned to promote vigor and increase the number of quality fruit.The pecan and certain other nut trees are “monoecious,” meaning that the pistillate, female flowers are borne on current season’s growth, while the male flowers are borne terminally on the previous season’s growth - male and female flowers in two different locations on the plant.Because the female flowers, and thus the fruit, are borne on terminal shoots of this year’s growth, severe heading back of these trees at the wrong time would seriously reduce nut production. For this reason, vigorously bearing pecan trees should be pruned only be removing interfering, broken, dead, or diseased branches during January or February.Fruit trees require a certain amount of annual pruning to keep them in the best condition to produce high-quality fruit. February is an ideal time to take care of fruit tree pruning chores.Peach and plum trees bear their fruit on one year old wood. Because pruning stimulates fresh growth, it’s the best means available to assure an annual supply of this essential fruiting wood.Pears and apples bear their fruit on short growth structures called “spurs”. These fruiting spurs grow very little each year so don’t prune these trees excessively because removing these spurs may reduce fruiting.Pear trees should never be heavily pruned after their third or fourth year. Heavy pruning of pears can be risky because excessive growth it stimulates is very susceptible to “fire blight” disease. With mature pear trees, limit pruning to removal of broken and diseased limbs.Other than to remove broken or damaged limbs, citrus trees require little if any pruning. Never prune freeze-damaged citrus until June, when the damage can be properly assessed.When cutting large limbs from fruit trees, cut close to and parallel with the main branch so that no stubs remain to decay and carry disease to the main branch or trunk. If the end of a branch is to be removed, make the cut just beyond a side branch.Large limbs that might strip the bark when they fall may be removed without damage o the tree if you first cut 6-8 inches out on the limb, extending about a third of the way through on the underside; then cut on the upper side slightly inward from the first cut. The limb will break off leaving a short stub that can then be removed flush with the trunk.Broken and dead limbs should be removed by making a cut just above a sound lateral branch.On many fruit trees water sprouts (vigorous upright growth) may grow on the trunk from the ground line upward. Such growth should be removed. If, however, a water sprout appears in an open space that might well be filled by a bearing branch, it may be left to become a fruitful limb.Trees that are growing too tall may be lowered by shortening the top upright branches, making a cut just above a side branch that is about an inch in diameter and which extends in a more horizontal direction. Lowering the top by heavy pruning (dehorning) is not advisable. Sometimes it’s best to lower the top gradually over a period of two or three years.Large lower branches often will lie on the ground when loaded with fruit. These normally should be cut off close to the trunk. Or, as an alternative, they may be headed back to just above a side branch that tends to grow in a more upward direction.

KNOW PURPOSE BEFORE PRUNING FRUIT PLANTS

INDIAN HAWTHORNS BECOMING INCREASINGLYPOPULAR LANDSCAPE PLANT

Azaleas, hollies and crape myrtles play a prominent role in Louisiana’s residential landscapes, but an ornamental plant becoming increasingly popular is Indian hawthorn.More and more plantings of Indian hawthorn are appearing, and these plants have many outstanding characteristics to be considered. Indian hawthorn is an intermediate sized shrub – typically averaging 3 feet high by 4 feet wide, although plants of some varieties can reach 5-6 feet tall. Flowers usually are about a half-inch across.The heaviest blooming for Indian hawthorn is mid-spring after azaleas have completed their flowering. White and pink flowering varieties of Indian hawthorn are available.When selecting a site for Indian hawthorn, pick one that receives at least direct sunlight during the morning hours. As with all of our ornamental shrubs in Louisiana, a raised, well-drained landscape bed is essential for optimum performance. Make sure adequate space is provided between plants to ensure good air circulation. This reduces disease and insect problems.Fall characteristics of Indian hawthorn include production of purple to black colored fruit. Some varieties also have good fall foliage color. Several Indian hawthorn varieties recommended for planting in Louisiana include Snow, Clara, Olivia and Eleanor Tabor. All of these varieties have excellent growth habit. However, the white flowering varieties of Indian hawthorn are less prone to disease than pink flowering varieties. The pink varieties are the most susceptible to Entomosporium leafspot, a major disease problem. Consider Indian hawthorns for your residential landscape plantings. They are great companion plants for azaleas in Louisiana landscapes.

by Tony OnellionThose of us who subscribe to a daily newspaper (or thrice weekly rag like the Times-Pick-the-dates-we-want-to-publish-Yune) get to read a column entitled “On Today’s Date”. It tells us on the publication date what, in history, happened on that date. Mostly, it’s pretty pedestrian stuff - otherwise, what would the columns have to say?It’s so much easier when it’s an anniversary of an event that falls on its anniversary - 10th, 20th, 25, centennial, etc. For example, this is the 50th year of my first date with my wife, Hilda.

We tried to find a restaurant that would serve us a $1.50 ribeye steak dinner but to no avail.

So, what are the big deals for 2015? First, it’s the bicentennial of the Battle of New Orleans where “we fought the bloody British” and “they ran through the briars and they ran through the brambles and they ran through the bushes where a rabbit wouldn’t go…”. it was also theseminal recording hit anniversary for Johnny Horton, who wrote those lyrics for his “Battle of New Orleans” rock hit…55 years ago! It is also the 55th anniversary of the Twist, a dance so popular that it turned an entire generation into patients with back and hipbone problems and gave birth to Chubby Checkers, who decided to cash in on the similar name and fame of one Antoine “Fats” Domino and imitators like Portly Parcheesi and Stocky Solitaire.

It is also the 60th anniversary of Rock and Roll, beginning with Bill Haley and his Comets with “Rock Around the Clock.” 1955 was also the year Ford and GM started building cars that were aerodynamically designed and made it easier to find a cozy parking space for you and your date. Viva Ford and G.M.!

Sixty five years ago, the United States entered the Korean Conflict, which was different than war because we were restricted on where we could send our troops into harm’s way. Seventy years ago, World War Two ended, which began an era of unparalleled growth of housing, highways and hitching up to start a family. Seventy five years ago, the British rescued its immediate future with the dramatic evacuation at Dunkirk.

And 35 years ago, Mount Saint Helens became this country’s most destructive hell when she blew her top (and over 1,300 feet of elevation) in a matter of seconds and with the power of more than 2,000 atomic bombs eviscerated an area of 240 square miles in less than an hour. If you’ve never been there, put it on your bucket list. The dramatic recording of the eruption in May from the actual filming location due north of the mountain from the film recovered from the camera of the man who shot it is both chilling and thrilling. And the land still bears the scars of the event, starting 17 miles northwest of the observatory which is located six miles north of the mountain.

It was only ten years ago that Katrina and Rita hit our area and the stories from those disasters are still fresh in everyone’s minds. Our new millennium started15 years ago. And the San Francisco 49ers demolished the Denver Broncos, 55 to 10, in the 1990 Super Bowl which marked the end of the Joe Montana/Bill Walsh era in the Bay Area, some 25 years ago.

Ninety five years ago, commercial radio began, which led to the marriage of radio and cars and soon thereafter, the advent of Prohibition, which led to the aforementioned parking which produced many children over the years. How these events play into each other! One hundred years ago, the San Francisco Exposition gave my home town one of its most iconic buildings, the Palace of the Legion of Honor.

I’m sure there are many more anniversary dates spinning off of 2015. Oh…the Civil War ended 150 years ago this year. Mandeville is 175 years old in 2015. The American Revolution started 240 years ago in Lexington and Concord. Try it yourself. Think of some similar anniversaries and email them to me at [email protected]
