The LSU Tigers lost a game Saturday night that they wouldn’t have had a chance to win back in early October. Another heartbreaking classic indicated these Tigers were not afraid of Alabama and their now out-of-the-running for the Heisman Trophy candidate Amari Cooper.

Much like the game against Ole Miss, the Tigers dominated the offensive line of scrimmage with what has to beconsidered the best line in the conference and maybe the country. Ironically, it was a dumb mistake by left guard Vidal Alexander that gave the Tide the chance to stop LSU with a field goal. That led to a mistake in the following kickoff when the LSU boot went out of bounds, giving the Tide a last gasp in which to tie the game and go into overtime.

Unlike 2011 at Bryant Denny Stadium, the 2014 Tigers didn’t have enough left in the tank to push the victory button.

The Tide won because their quarterback had more experience in winning than Anthony Jennings, LSU’s QB. Jennings had an excellent chance of gaining a first down and goal to go on LSU’s fourth down in OT but chose to toss the ball into the end zone. Questionable no calls by the refs then ended the Tigers’ chances of tying the game in the first overtime.

Jennings also blew an opportunity at the end of the first half when he made a rookie mistake by throwing to a spot even though the receiver had fallen down, giving Alabama an easy interception and a field goal to tie the game at the half.

Cooper, the shoo-in for the Biletnikoff Award given to the nation’s top receiver, dropped at least six passes in the game. He was targeted at least 16 times as the Tide tripled the passing attempts by the Tigers, without too much more success.

The Tide won with Cooper but could have easily lost with him after his poor performance against the best secondary in the league and probably the country. It certainly cost him any outside chance he had for winning the Heisman as on most plays he looked ordinary at best.

Alabama had their toughest test of the season, even more so than against Ole Miss, especially trying to stop the Tigers’ g round game. N e x t y e a r ’ s o f f ens i ve l i ne won’t be as good as this year’s with the graduation of La’el Collins at left tackle and Elliot

Porter at center and the expected early departure of the aforementioned Alexander at left guard. But the Tigers have two experienced starters returning and enough talent stockpiled to create a comparable line for 2015. Everything else has to be an improvement for next year, with the moderate losses in the defensive backfield and at running back.

Linebacker will be a strength as will the defensive line and the entire secondary, which is led by amazing true freshmen, redshirt freshmen and sophomores. A couple or even three Tigers could be drafted from this secondary but at least five highly experienced players return, led by Tre’Davious White, Rashard Robinson, Ricky Jefferson and Jamal Adams.

The noticeable difference between Alabama and LSU’s play execution was the speed with which the Tide ran their plays. ‘Bama was quicker and more confident but most of that quickness and confidence was absorbed by LSU. LSU also backed off their defensive pressure in overtime, playing more not to lose than to win. That cost the Tigers in the end. If the starting quarterbacks had been switched before the game, LSU would have won the game by at least ten points.

‘Bama’s signal caller really isn’t that good but he doesn’t make the mistakes of Jennings and is more confident in pulling the trigger, much like A.J. McCarron the past three years was for the Tide. Neither team will be much better at QB in 2015 but the Tigers will be a much more experienced and confident team heading into Tuscaloosa next November and should have the edge on Nick Saban’s team. Les Miles has proven his philosophy can develop a team’s spirit but not the killer instinct to win the important games in crunch time to take this program to the next level. He still needs to take the wraps off of Cam Cameron and find a quarterback coach to bring his QB recruits to the level most of the other players achieve. Miles’ players are less developed at LSU than many SEC programs. Their talent level then can be improved tremendously in the NFL, where challenges are tougher than they are in Baton Rouge. No one questions Miles’ ability to recruit but the question remains: does Miles have the personality to get the best out of his players in critical situations which would reverse heart aching losses like the one on Saturday night? I still think he doesn’t and so the talent of the Purple and Gold reaches higher levels in the pro ranks than in Tiger Stadium, while Alabama professionals are a step or two behind the Tigers who play on Sunday, because Nick Saban wrings them dry before they leave Tuscaloosa.

Slidell Becoming a “Hollywood Magnet Town”

by Tony Onellion

Seems you can’t walk around Slidell these days without running into a movie crew or a casting call somewhere. Earlier this year, the city auditorium was the setting for a three-day casting call for a movie to be shot in the area.

Last month, Ashton K u t c h e r a n d h i s girlfriend were seen around town, especially Olde Towne, enjoying the sights as they visited the area for a wedding. A few years ago, part of the movie “Chess Records” was filmed along Carey Street.

And this month, the movie “Kidnapped” with Halle Berry had a car chase and crash fi lmed along Carey Street and in front of our publication office. If you’ve wondered how the crews film the drivers while the car is in motion, yesterday’s action showed one of four rigs where the driver of the chase car was driving on top of the car, much like the fireman who steers the back end of a hook and ladder truck. Even as a “B” movie, the production budget must be relatively astronomical as at least 60 production, transportation, catering, security and talent personnel filled the area.

A few businesses were rebranded to look like a hardware store and the like. It caused a little inconvenience to our clients but the exposure to Slidell is worth it. The crew was attentive and polite and the filming employed a n a d d i t i o n a l dozen or so police officers. Many other productions have taken place in the Slidell area as well

as other parts of the Northshore in recent years.

It all started with a James Bond movie, “Live and Let Die” starring Roger Moore as 007. That film had a ten minute chase episode filmed almost exclusively in the Bayou Bonfouca area. Expect more filming gigs here as other states unsuccessfully try to secure offsite filming budgets away from Hollywood. States like North Carolina are backing off efforts to increase their film industry. But Hollywood loves the Northshore because of its diverse topography and its proximity to New Orleans. And filming in early November leaves the Yankee crew much cooler, dryer and happier than filming in the summertime. Look for “Kidnapped” in the movies or on digital sometime next year. You won’t see our office, however…unless the left turn on Robert Street by the vehicle driven by Halle Berry somehow swung the camera over to the left as well. Everyone in the office had a Monster Ball watching the

filming on Monday.

Words to GROW by!GROOMING PLANTS FOR WINTER STAY INDOORS

Home plant lovers should begin moving tender plants indoors for protection against cold temperatures at this time of year. These specimens enhance interior spaces by adding interesting forms, textures and colors. Before moving plants indoors, they should be groomed so they will be attractive inside the home. Such preparations should include:

--Cleaning the container. Use a brush and a solution of warm, soapy water, plus a bleaching agent to kill algae.

--Removing dust and debris from foliage. If you wish to have natural-colored foliage, clean with a mild solution of dishwashing soap and water, then thoroughly drench with clear water. For a glossier appearance, use whole milk in the treatment. Moisten a sponge or cloth in milk and wipe the foliage. The low-fat content of the milk will give the plant a nice glossy appearance and yet not appear artificial, which is the case with the commercial plant shine substances.

--Remove all dead or yellow foliage and dead or injured branches, stems and/or stubs.

--Do not re-pot immediately prior to moving plants indoors. Re-potting should be done four to six weeks before taking them inside.

--Provide as much light inside as possible. The difference in light intensity from outdoors to indoors in tremendous. Expect to have considerable leaf drop until the plant becomes acclimated to its new environment. The greater the difference in light levels from outside to inside, the more leaf drop you can expect. Avoid locating plants directly beneath a heat vent.

During their indoor stay over the colder months, house plants will need less water and fertilizer. Water only when the plants need it. To judge when they need watering, stick your finger into the soil to a depth of about 1 inch. If the soil feels moist, do not water. Water plants in dry soil thoroughly, then allow the soil to become fairly dry again before the next watering.

Little or no fertilizer is given indoor plants during the winter. If they get good light, warm temperature and are putting on new growth, you may fertilize them once a month, using either liquid or water-soluble fertilizer. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for the amount to use.

Words to GROW by!LANDSCAPE TIPS

This time of year, homeowners should plan for the late winter or early spring plantings.

Plan to store caladium tubers before foliage freezes. The tubers will probably rot in our soils over winter. Gradually decrease watering until foliage begins to die. Once foliage has faded, lift the tubers, wash and allow to dry, then pack in peat moss or dry sand and store in a cool location or hang in an old nylon stocking until planting time in April or May. Do not allow tubers to freeze while in storage.

Bulbs - Although it is beyond the recommended dates for planting most spring flowering bulbs, it is not too late to plant hyacinths and tulips. Do not plant in wet or frozen soils.

Plant tulip bulbs - which have been refrigerated. Tulip bulbs must be planted immediately upon removal from cold storage. Experimental evidence indicates that exposing bulbs to 10-14 days of room temperature (72 degrees F) after removal from cold storage erases the benefits of cold storage.

Roses - Prepare beds now for January planting. Select a sunny area where the soil is rich and well drained. Raise beds for better drainage. Incorporate generous amounts of humus (leafmold or barnyard manure).

Trees - December, January and February are excellent for planting trees in Louisiana. Nothing contributes more to the appearance of home and community than well-placed and well-selected trees. Consider our native Louisiana trees such as swamp red-maple, sweet gum, magnolias, live oak, sycamore, pines and many others for large shade trees. For smaller flowering trees, crape myrtle, dogwood, parsley hawthorne, deciduous holly, American holly and red bay are among the many possibilities.

Remember that deciduous trees are often appropriate close to a building because they allow the sun to filter through in the winter. Most of our colorful spring flowering trees are deciduous. In selecting trees for street plantings, remember that trees such as live oaks tend to have branches that are low and require a great deal of pruning maintenance to be successful. A better selection might be sycamores or varnish trees that are more pyramidal. Crape myrtles and American hollies are excellent for street plantings in many parts of the state. Try to select a tree and promote its use in your community. Repeated use of a tree will give unity and character to the area.

PRUNING SHADE TREES HELPS MINIMIZE INJURYRare is the yard tree that does not need pruning in its lifetime. There are several reasons a tree may need pruning. Most immediate is a doctoring to aid in recovery from storm damage. Other practical reasons deal with reducing weight and stress on the plant, lessening the shock of transplant, removing of dead parts or halting the spread of disease.

Trees also are pruned to adapt them to man’s environment, such as keeping limbs from coming in contact with power lines, rubbing against the home and other objects or obstructing the view of traffic signals. Then there is an esthetic reason, mainly to shape and otherwise trim the tree to make it more attractive in the home landscape. If limbs are less than one-half inch in diameter, they can be removed easily with a pair of hand clippers. As they increase in size, a special pruning saw or chainsaw will be necessary.

To do a good job, you need the right kind of saw. An ordinary carpenter’s hand saw is not best, because it tends to bind as it moves into a cut. A pruning saw for general yard work is suggested. Some have a slight curve in the blade, which aids the sawing action in tight spaces. The teeth of the pruning saw, being much larger than on the hand saw, will cut through limbs much easier.Removing limbs to improve the health or vigor of the tree is a desirable goal, but if done incorrectly may injure the tree even more.

Steps to Proper Pruning

1. Locate the branch bark ridge. This is a slightly swollen collar around the base of the limb next to the trunk.

2. If the limb is large, remove it with a stub cut. This is done by making the first cut about one-third of the way through the limb on the underside, approximately 4 inches from the trunk. Then place the saw a little closer to the trunk on the topside and cut off the entire limb, leaving the stub. The limb will break off at the stub cut.

3. Make the final cut at the branch-trunk ridge to remove the stub. If using a power saw, make the final cut on the upstroke.

Stub cutting safely removes the branch without peeling the bark down the side of the tree. It also prevents splitting of the wood, which increases the size of the wound.

A tree will heal a wound much faster if the cut is made where the limb joins the branch collar. If the limb is cut flush with the tree, the wound will take much longer to heal and there will be a greater chance of rot and decay getting started. Same is true with stubs left on the tree, which take much longer to heal then the recommended final pruning cut. Chances of rot and decay development are quite high in hardwood species if the branch stub is left on the tree.

Avoid removing branches that exceed 4 inches in diameter, if possible. Branches that size or larger create big wounds which have difficulty healing.

The most pleasant time to prune branches from most trees is in winter or very early spring, before the leaves form. Spring pruning should be avoided on maples and birches, because they bleed sap heavily at that time. Summer pruning is better for those trees. Winter pruning of pines may be best because pine beetle are less active and wounds will partly heal before spring.

Words to GROW by!WOOD HEATING SYSTEMS NEED YEARLY ATTENTION

Burning wood for home heat can save money, but only if it is done safely.

A wood heating system requires more attention than oil or gas heating units. Any wood-source system should be inspected annually. The interior walls of all the system’s parts should be brushed to remove creosote deposits before inspection. Creosote, a highly flammable material, is the leading cause of fires from the burning of wood for home heating.

Check interior walls of the wood burner for cracks in the fire box. Cracks should be sealed with a fire-resistant paste or caulking, or welded to prevent sparks or coals from escaping. Cracks or separation of welded joints also should be repaired. Check stove doors for warping or cracking. Replace drafts and seals.

Inspect the electrical wiring fans or blowers on fireplace inserts and wood heaters. Defective wiring is another fire hazard waiting to happen and should be replaced. A heat-resistant lubricant should be sued to lubricate moving parts. A stove pipe or connector from the stove to the chimney flue is a potentially dangerous fire hazard. Rusted or weakened stove pipes should be replace. Inspect pipe joints to ensure that they are sealed tightly. Apply a fire-resistant pipe cement to seal the joints.

Pay special attention to elbows, because these may be the most likely places creosote accumulation, also the first place in the pipe where a hole may appear. Inspect closely where the pipe goes through walls, ceiling and into chimney. Look for brown charred or cracked walls near the pipes. Evidence of this indicates the pipe gets too hot when burning, a clear fire hazard. Also check the condition of, and have available, a smoke detector and fire extinguisher.

Professional chimney sweeps can inspect and clean wood-burning heaters. Companies specializing in heating devices can provide additional information on the safe use of wood for heating and the availability of equipment, replacement parts and repair services.

LANDSCAPE FENCING, WALLS BLEND INDOORS AND OUTDOORS

Barriers have been used for centuries to achieve physical and visual separation in landscape planning. Although it is still true today, as landscapes and living styles change, so do the use, location and design of fences and walls. These structures can add markedly to the overall character of a landscape development.

As residential lots become smaller, it is usually desirable to extend properties beyond the actual property lines. Fences and walls used indiscriminately can detract from the appearance of a house and neighborhood. Cluttering a neighborhood with an uncoordinated selection and placement of fences tends to fragment properties and generally destroy the visual and psychological harmony of an area.

Enclosed spaces are used to great advantage, often to create an outdoor room which ensures that home owners have at least a small, private open space for independent action. Such an outdoor room can be a patio, garden or courtyard.

A fence or wall can divide a landscape into specific areas for work and play and can more effectively screen storage, garbage cans and other undesirable elements than can plants. These structures also can help control the climate of small area by creating sheltered pockets to catch the sun or control prevailing winds. The design of fences and walls should relate directly to the architectural design of the building, while recognizing that there are simple designs compatible with most architectural design styles.

When enclosing an area, it is recommended to include adequate space for some planting. Most fencing is not totally acceptable without plantings which help relate it to the adjacent landscape. Selections of plants growing on and close to the fence should be given careful consideration on the basis of their rate of growth, foliage and flower.

Walls can create an entrance zone for residential landscapes. They help to define the entrance space. They also can determine circulation, expand interior space and extend the architectural expression of a house. As trees and shrubs become large and help establish a special landscape character with age and maturity, some of the smaller and less significant plantings may be completely removed to reduce maintenance. In most cases, these plantings will not be missed.

As some plantings age, they do not produce flowers and fruit as they once did. Many places may need to be evaluated to determine new plantings which provide color or other special accent features.

Periodically, we engage in interior renovations to make indoor spaces more livable and to meet the present family needs. So it is with landscape plantings, which are in a state of constant change. They, too, can benefit from the same type of review which decides whether they are meeting current styles and needs.

House Plants

House plants should be prepared in early fall for winter. Examine those that have been indoors all summer. Pick off all dead leaves. If the surface of the soil is packed and hard, scrape a little away and replace it with a good rich soil mixture. Sponge the leaves with warm water to remove grime and insects.

Examine the plants closely for scale insects, mealy bugs and other pests. If they are present, eradicate them. It is helpful to wash the plants thoroughly with a forceful stream of water that reaches all parts, including the under surface of the leaves. Be careful not to break the foliage. Sponge or spray with a good insecticide. Plants that have been outdoors for the summer should be inspected and cleaned as recommended above. Bring them indoors at least two weeks before heat is needed in the house so that they can become accustomed to their new environment before they are subjected to the added difficulties of dry atmosphere and low light intensity. Try to give each plant the condition of light and temperature best suited to its kind.
