Fisher House Foundation is best known for a network of comfort homes where military and veterans’ families can stay at no cost while a loved one is receiving treatment. These homes are located at major military and VA medical centers nationwide, close to the medical center or hospital they serve. Fisher Houses have up to 21 suites, with private bedrooms and baths. Families share a common kitchen, laundry facilities, a warm dining room and an inviting living room. Fisher House Foundation ensures that there is never a lodging fee. Since inception, the program has saved military and veterans’ families an estimated $235 million in out of pocket costs for lodging and transportation.

Fisher House Foundation also operates the Hero Miles program, using donated frequent flyer miles to bring family members to the bedside of injured service members as well as the Hotels for Heroes program using donated hotel points to allow family members to stay at hotels near medical centers without charge. The Foundation also manages a grant program that supports other military charities and scholarship funds for military children, spouses and children of fallen and disabled veterans.

For the tenth year in a row, Fisher House Foundation has received the coveted “Four-Star” rating for sound fiscal management from Charity Navigator, the nation’s premier charity-rating agency, placing Fisher House among the top 1% of charities nationwide. Fisher House Foundation has headquarters in Rockville, MD.

FROM CLASSLESS TO CLASSIC IN LESS THAN A MONTH

By Tony Onellion

Just when guys like me figured the Tigers were going to be forced into what Coach Miles won’t refer to as a rebuilding year, the Tigers came up with a classic on Saturday night. The 10 to 7 victory over the highest ranked Ole Miss team to show up in Baton Rouge since the Kennedy years found out that LSU’s young talent decided to jell much earlier than expected.

The line domination of the Tigers on offense and the maturation of the defensive line to perform even better than Mississippi’s nationally-ranked unit was a thing of beauty to see. There were so many keys to this game. In no particular order:

1. The relative maturing of Anthony Jennings. This maligned sophomore quarterback made two terrible throws that were both picked off by Ole

Miss. But for the first time, more of his passes were on target and his touchdown flip to massive tight end Logan Stokes was a deceptive thing of beauty. He didn’t panic and he showed the best pocket presence of his career while also being able to move outside the pocket and complete some impressive throws. 2. The amazing versatility of senior Terrence Magee at running back. The former Franklinton quarterback showed speed, savvy and toughness as a first half alternative to Leonard Fournette. Even though he fumbled, he still was a major contributor to the win.

3. The offensive line play. This was supposed to be LSU’s bell cow unit, with two veteran seniors and five returning starters. It played like it on Saturday night, with Jennings getting all the time he needed to pass or develop a running play. 4. The all-of-a-sudden jelling of the defensive line. This unit won’t be confused with many of the great lines of the past two to 12 years but they certainly played like one of those units against Ole Miss. Junior defensive end Danielle Hunter continued his All-American play on the edge while his senior bookend, Jermauria Rasco, continued to get better….much better….against the Rebels/Black Bears. But the big story is how the defensive tackles played. Someone removed the soft stuff and true freshman Davon Godchaux, along with sophomore starter Christian LaCouture and veteran Quentin Thomas rotated with Maquedius Bain and put tremendous pressure on senior Ole Miss quarterback Bo Wallace. The Bad Bo played on Saturday, frustrated and childish, as the Tigers pressured him incessantly and sacked the veteran several times.

5. The coming of age of Kendell Beckwith at middle linebacker. The one given move seen by most football savvy fans last year finally happened as this large (by LSU standards) linebacker has learned to call the defensive plays and hit like a truck all night. Powerful and quick, Beckwith certainly deserves consideration for All-Conference honors in an SEC which doesn’t have the number of pro-ready backers it normally produces. 6. The blocking of the wideouts. Yes….they all blocked like they were Jarvis Landry clones.

7. The continued improving play of the secondary and the coming into their own of Ricky Jefferson, Rashard Robinson and especially true freshman Jamal Adams, who will be a freshman first team All-American and should make the three-deep all-SEC team.

He’s not Tyrann Mathieu; he’s a tougher hitter, much like LaRon Landry. 8. The Ripley’s Believe It or Not Play when Logan Stokes caught a touchdown pass. This is a tight end, folks, the position ignored most in the passing game. And last but not least - 9. The effective play calling of Offensive Coordinator Cam Cameron and the staying out-of-his-way-FINALLY attitude of Les Miles, whose rock-toting philosophy was massaged enough by Cameron to give the Tigers the winning play for this game. Miles got the game ball and he probably deserved it. But credit someone for getting through to Jennings enough to make this one happen. And with a week off, let’s hope the coaches can jack the players up another notch before Nick Saban’s machine rolls Tide into town on November 8th.

10 and 2 is definitely doable and that’s something few folks would have said less than a month ago. Nice going, Tigers, and finally, Tiger fans in the stadium who went from being classless dolts by leaving early regardless of the score or opponent to what the collegiate football nation expects of the greatest nighttime sports venue in the world - a rocking, roaring inferno of sound that is the best in college football and can rival the Legion of BoomBox in Seattle or the fans in Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium .

GIANTS ARE “Pee”..ing ALL OVER THE ROYALS

By Tony Onellion

The San Francisco Giants were one game away from their third World Series title in five years as we went to press this week. They are there because of an extraordinary manager in Bruce Bochy, a solid front office and a collection of selfless players….Players with a capital “P”.

This is the first World Series to go three straight games without a home run, let alone a triple. And the Pitching….with a

capital “P”…is the reason. More so for the Giants than the Kansas City Royals, whose vaunted late inning bullpen was rocked by San Francisco for three runs Sunday night as perhaps the best postseason pitcher of all time - the Giant’s Madison Bumgarner - threw his second playoff shutout and has only allowed one earned run in 29 innings of World Series play. That’s less than 3/10ths of a run per game and none of the Hall of Famers preceding him has come close to that performance.

Besides Bochy and Bumgarner…the Killer “Bees”…., the Giants feature Juan PEREZ, rookie second baseman Joe PANIK, All-Star and former MVP Buster POSEY, “the PANDA”, PABLO Sandoval, Hunter PENCE, amazing long reliever Yusmeiro PETIT and late-season acquisition starter Jake PEAVY. They all work together like Peas in a Pod. Along with the Killer “Bees”….Bochy, Bumgarner, Brandon Belt, Brandon Crawford, Gregor Blanco….well, the Series isn’t over by a long shot as the Royals are supposedly a “Team of Destiny”, but even with the Series ending in Kansas City, the Giants’ Bees and Pees will be extremely difficult to overcome. Look for a Series wrap-up for the Giants in Game 7.

Celebrate the Tammany Trace 20th Anniversary November 1 & 2

Contact: Ronnie Simpson 985-898-5243

Come Celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Tammany Trace on November 1st and 2nd. This moving celebration kicks-off in the morning at 8am on Saturday, November 1st at the Covington Trailhead with music by We 3, the Covington Art Market sponsored by the St. Tammany Art Association, the Mayor’s Health Initiative and food from the farmer’s market. And an open air market throughout town.

The party will then travel down the Trace to Abita Springs where you will hear the Cajun music of La Touche and a performance with the Northshore Cajun Dancers. The first day of festivities ends with a performance by the Creole Stringbeans at the Tammany Trace Trailhead on Koop Drive where again, there will be plenty of fun for the whole family. There will also be face painting, the Samba Man and an arts and crafts tent with plenty of activities for the kids.

Sunday, November 2nd begins with a jazz brunch at the Mandeville Trailhead with a musical performance by Mykia Jovan and brunch will be available for purchase from Opal Basil and the Lake House. There will also be a puppet show from the Mandeville Fire Department, face painting and demonstrations from Varsity Sports. From there we will travel through Lacombe to Camp Salmen Nature Park where visitors will take part in interpretive learning programs and enjoy music on the banks of Bayou Liberty. Visitors will find Milliken Farms on site with wildlife animals including raccoons, alligators and more, the Boy Scout’s obstacle course, wildlife photography booth, guided tours of the Park, the Wildlife and Fisheries casting inflatable, and an acoustic performance by Bobby Ohler.

The Celebration culminates in the City of Slidell at Heritage Park with Vince Vance and the Valliants.

Whatever your style, the Tammany Trace Anniversary Celebration has it, with fun for the whole family! To find out more about the event, call 985-898-3011 or visit us on the web at www.stpgov.org/20th.

What can I do now to prepare for the unexpected for my pets?In the confusion that accompanies a person’s unexpected illness, accident, or death, pets may be overlooked. In some cases, pets are discovered in the person’s home days after the tragedy. To prevent this from happening to your pet, take these simple precautions:

Find at least two responsible friends or relatives who agree to serve as temporary emergency caregivers in the event that something unexpected happens to you. Provide them with keys to your home; feeding and care instructions; the name of your veterinarian; and information about the permanent care provisions you have made for your pet. Make sure your neighbors, friends, and relatives know how many pets you have and the names and contact numbers of the individuals who have agreed to serve as emergency caregivers. Emergency caregivers should also know how to contact each other.

Words to GROW by!WOOD HEATING SYSTEMS NEED YEARLY ATTENTION

Burning wood for home heat can save money, but only if it is done safely.

A wood heating system requires more attention than oil or gas heating units. Any wood-source system should be inspected annually. The interior walls of all the system’s parts should be brushed to remove creosote deposits before inspection. Creosote, a highly flammable material, is the leading cause of fires from the burning of wood for home heating.

Check interior walls of the wood burner for cracks in the fire box. Cracks should be sealed with a fire-resistant paste or caulking, or welded to prevent sparks or coals from escaping. Cracks or separation of welded joints also should be repaired. Check stove doors for warping or cracking. Replace drafts and seals.

Inspect the electrical wiring fans or blowers on fireplace inserts and wood heaters. Defective wiring is another fire hazard waiting to happen and should be replaced. A heat-resistant lubricant should be sued to lubricate moving parts. A stove pipe or connector from the stove to the chimney flue is a potentially dangerous fire hazard. Rusted or weakened stove pipes should be replace. Inspect pipe joints to ensure that they are sealed tightly. Apply a fire-resistant pipe cement to seal the joints.

Pay special attention to elbows, because these may be the most likely places creosote accumulation, also the first place in the pipe where a hole may appear. Inspect closely where the pipe goes through walls, ceiling and into chimney. Look for brown charred or cracked walls near the pipes. Evidence of this indicates the pipe gets too hot when burning, a clear fire hazard. Also check the condition of, and have available, a smoke detector and fire extinguisher.

Professional chimney sweeps can inspect and clean wood-burning heaters. Companies specializing in heating devices can provide additional information on the safe use of wood for heating and the availability of equipment, replacement parts and repair services.

LANDSCAPE FENCING, WALLS BLEND INDOORS AND OUTDOORS

Barriers have been used for centuries to achieve physical and visual separation in landscape planning. Although it is still true today, as landscapes and living styles change, so do the use, location and design of fences and walls. These structures can add markedly to the overall character of a landscape development.

As residential lots become smaller, it is usually desirable to extend properties beyond the actual property lines. Fences and walls used indiscriminately can detract from the appearance of a house and neighborhood. Cluttering a neighborhood with an uncoordinated selection and placement of fences tends to fragment properties and generally destroy the visual and psychological harmony of an area.

Enclosed spaces are used to great advantage, often to create an outdoor room which ensures that home owners have at least a small, private open space for independent action. Such an outdoor room can be a patio, garden or courtyard.

A fence or wall can divide a landscape into specific areas for work and play and can more effectively screen storage, garbage cans and other undesirable elements than can plants. These structures also can help control the climate of small area by creating sheltered pockets to catch the sun or control prevailing winds.

The design of fences and walls should relate directly to the architectural design of the building, while recognizing that there are simple designs compatible with most architectural design styles.

When enclosing an area, it is recommended to include adequate space for some planting. Most fencing is not totally acceptable without plantings which help relate it to the adjacent landscape. Selections of plants growing on and close to the fence should be given careful consideration on the basis of their rate of growth, foliage and flower.

Walls can create an entrance zone for residential landscapes. They help to define the entrance space. They also can determine circulation, expand interior space and extend the architectural expression of a house. As trees and shrubs become large and help establish a special landscape character with age and maturity, some of the smaller and less significant plantings may be completely removed to reduce maintenance. In most cases, these plantings will not be missed.

As some plantings age, they do not produce flowers and fruit as they once did. Many places may need to be evaluated to determine new plantings which provide color or other special accent features.

Periodically, we engage in interior renovations to make indoor spaces more livable and to meet the present family needs. So it is with landscape plantings, which are in a state of constant change. They, too, can benefit from the same type of review which decides whether they are meeting current styles and needs.

House Plants

House plants should be prepared in early fall for winter. Examine those that have been indoors all summer. Pick off all dead leaves. If the surface of the soil is packed and hard, scrape a little away and replace it with a good rich soil mixture. Sponge the leaves with warm water to remove grime and insects.

Examine the plants closely for scale insects, mealy bugs and other pests. If they are present, eradicate them. It is helpful to wash the plants thoroughly with a forceful stream of water that reaches all parts, including the under surface of the leaves. Be careful not to break the foliage. Sponge or spray with a good insecticide. Plants that have been outdoors for the summer should be inspected and cleaned as recommended above. Bring them indoors at least two weeks before heat is needed in the house so that they can become accustomed to their new environment before they are subjected to the added difficulties of dry atmosphere and low light intensity. Try to give each plant the condition of light and temperature best suited to its kind.

GROOMING PLANTS FOR WINTER STAY INDOORS

Home plant lovers should begin moving tender plants indoors for protection against cold temperatures at this time of year. These specimens enhance interior spaces by adding interesting forms, textures and colors. Before moving plants indoors, they should be groomed so they will be attractive inside the home. Such preparations should include:

--Cleaning the container. Use a brush and a solution of warm, soapy water, plus a bleaching agent to kill algae.

--Removing dust and debris from foliage. If you wish to have natural-colored foliage, clean with a mild solution of dishwashing soap and water, then thoroughly drench with clear water. For a glossier appearance, use whole milk in the treatment. Moisten a sponge or cloth in milk and wipe the foliage. The low-fat content of the milk will give the plant a nice glossy appearance and yet not appear artificial, which is the case with the commercial plant shine substances.

--Remove all dead or yellow foliage and dead or injured branches, stems and/or stubs.

--Do not re-pot immediately prior to moving plants indoors. Re-potting should be done four to six weeks before taking them inside.

--Provide as much light inside as possible. The difference in light intensity from outdoors to indoors in tremendous. Expect to have considerable leaf drop until the plant becomes acclimated to its new environment. The greater the difference in light levels from outside to inside, the more leaf drop you can expect. Avoid locating plants directly beneath a heat vent.

During their indoor stay over the colder months, house plants will need less water and fertilizer. Water only when the plants need it. To judge when they need watering, stick your finger into the soil to a depth of about 1 inch. If the soil feels moist, do not water. Water plants in dry soil thoroughly, then allow the soil to become fairly dry again before the next watering.

Little or no fertilizer is given indoor plants during the winter. If they get good light, warm temperature and are putting on new growth, you may fertilize them once a month, using either liquid or water-soluble fertilizer. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for the amount to use.
