    this year

    the smog

    from

    fsr

auay forest f ire s s ettled on us

    for

    ueeks

    at a

    time

tile were living in a dust bouil.

    I t

    was summer

    and people like

    to

    enjoy

    the

out of doors betuieen school is

    out

    and

    fal l term. When uil l you f i l l the pool

    for

    suimming? Each uho

    asked was

    requested

    to pray

    for

    rain.

    Lightning

    and

    thunder

    announced

the change. The uiater pounded on the uindous, some got under the door

    and the dry arroyo

    uias

    hit with

    flash flooding that

    carried

    auiay the

    unsuspecting

    small

    animals. Take a deep

    breaththe air

    is cleaner

    as

    the

    land

    gets

    greener l

    UIATERI

    All

sizes of bottled uater is big business. The

    hovering

    90F temperatures most of

    you

    suffered this year

    uias

    also

    part of

    our

    summer

    l ife

    style

    even

    at

    6,000

    feet

    above sea

    level.

    I

    boiled

cooled and prepared water in sterilized glass bottles which came out

    of the frig

    ice cold. You

    took a

    bottle

    with

    you when

    you left

    the

    house.

    UI T RI My brother

and four sisters and I grew up on a ranch

    in Montana nest led close

    to

the Begrtooth Mountains. Our water came

from Rocky Creek. Crystal clear and ice cold that

    was

    waterl One

    short

    hot summer when the

    creek

was low we dammed up the

    stream

    to

    swim. Uie

    also

    caught rainbow

    trout

    hiding under

    the rocks. The

frozen snow and ice on the glacier our very favorite view provided

    a dip

    that refreshed in fact you

    screamed at the

    f irs t plunge.

    Ule

    have a well on Rancho

    Altamira

    that

    is very

    deep. During the Ik

years we lived here without electricity the windmill pulled

    up

    the

    water.

Rodney and I have seen a

    variety

    of

    wells

    in

    our

    years to

    the

    villages. UJhen

    a well

    is

    deep

    you

    need a

    good

    long rope

    to

    pull

    up the

    water.

In the villages going after water used to be the

    social time

    of the

    day for young

    women

    and

    gir ls

    Balancing

    their

clay water jars on their heads was a sight to beholdl

    One

    day as

    Jesus

was going through Samaria with his

    disciples

    he sat

    down

    by a well.

    The source

    of water

    was

    deep.

    The disciples

    went

to the city to buy food. In

    this

area Jews and Samaritans dlrdn t

    associate with each

    other in

    fact i t was known

    that

    Jews would not use

    the same dishes that

    Samaritans

use. Jesus was t ired and thi rsty from

    his journey.

    On

    the path to

the well came a Samaritan woman to draw

    water.

    Jesus said to her

    Will

    you give me a

    drink?

    She

    said

    You

    are

    a

    Jew

    and I

    am

    a Samaritan

    woman.

    How

    can you ask

    me

    for

    a

    drink? The conversat ion

    continued

    and

    when

    she

    discovered

    who He was she hurried

    back to

    t e l l

    others

    leaving behind her w ater

    jar . They

    dropped

    everything

    they were doing and came.

    H

    even

    got

an invitation to stay around a

    couple

    of days.

    Later

    the people

    would say

    to the woman We

    no

    longer

    believe

    just because

    of

    what

    you

    said

    now we have heard for

    ourselves

    and we know

    that

    this

    man

    really is the

    Sgvior of

    the

    world. WA T E R1
